Titan Network Projects - Clarification
« on: July 10, 2015, 09:18:44 PM »
So I've seen what appears to be some confusion about which programs do what, and conflation of program names. So, because I was feeling in the CoH mood after being in Chat, and because I needed to refresh my Inkscape skills, I made a little diagram type thing to clear things up.

An imgur gallery of the diagrams is here: http://imgur.com/a/TDCyB
A single image with all the diagrams in one long picture is here: http://imgur.com/VhnuWKP

It doesn't get much into technical details or deeper explanations, as that was not the goal. However, I may decide to do something like that later, although I strongly suspect that a more technical graphic would be mostly screenshots of folders and the installation process, but whatever.

Originally I figured I'd post it in the wiki section of the forums first, to get feedback about: A) If it's necessary and B) Its look and layout and such (I posted here since I have the impression most people won't see it here if it turns out to be not good / needed).

I used CIT before they even joined the Titan network! But then I left for a long ol' time, and came back. Now I edit the wiki.

I'm working on sorting the Lore AMAs so that questions are easily found and linked: http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Lore_AMA/Sorted Tell me what you think!

Very nicely done; hopefully it will help people understand the pieces involved.

One issue that prevents us from featuring that image on the wiki is that Tequila and Island Rum are not Titan projects, and do we officially endorse or recommend them.

The main reason is that while they're both generic downloaders, the default manifests they point to include the COH client files. Distribution of those files is technically copyright infringement, and we're trying to keep Icon and Paragon Chat as free of potential legal issues as we can. That's also the reason the threads that community members have started about those programs haven't been stickied, etc.

I've made the split up images, and will update the OP accordingly with this gallery: http://imgur.com/a/TDCyB

I can remove references to the launchers for future explanations. I can see that helping with an explanation of what the programs actually do, as opposed to an explanation of what the programs are, and maybe I'll do that later. But for now, I think this is nice, and the installers being included is essential to the whole point of the gallery.

I forgot to add a sad Linux penguin to the Windows / Mac installers picture, so maybe I'll do that later.

Wow, this is really cool. Thanks for making this. I find pictures next to text is much easier to follow then just all text.
Awaiting the day I can return to my childhood-created hero :)

Correction: one of the images says "the only server Paragon Chat allows you to use is the Titan Network server". This is incorrect. Any XMPP server with MUC (Multi User Chatroom) support will work fine. XMPP servers without MUC support will show you al your contacts in the friends list, and you can send tells back and forth, but you cannot see each other.

An example of the former? Most servers in this list: https://list.jabber.at/

An example of the latter? Google. You can use your Google account to log into Paragon Chat, and you will see all your Google contacts as global friends, and any tells you sent them will show up in their Hangouts client.

I can put together a tutorial on setting up your own, but we don't want to fragment the community when it's barely getting back together.

Nicely done!  I'm keeping a copy of the long graphic for future reference and just because I like it so much!  Very impressive.  Clear.  Concise.  Legible.

Soooo... When it auto adds the "@chat.cohtitan.com" after your name in the Paragon Chat log in screen.... You can already change it to any server you want? I just thought I saw a post from Codewalker saying he wasn't allowing it to connect to others servers yet.

Nope, it's even in the FAQ that it defaults to the Titan server to help keep the community together (as well as help us find bugs), but you can log into any XMPP server you want with it.

Wonderful, informative graphic!

Speaking personally, I would keep the references to Tequila and Island Rum but just make clear that they are not Titan Network developed, hosted, supported, or endorsed.  Perhaps you could just note that they are independent.

Is there any functionality lost when you do that? E.g. would logging in to random.server.com cause /mapmove not to work, or is that part of the ParagonChat.exe that's left open?

Edit: Never mind, sort of. Looks like you have the info for various XMPP extensions required to make things work. But I think my question still stands, maybe?

Thanks! I will see what I can do. Shouldn't be too hard to figure out how to make that clear.

Edit: Ok, I made some changes. I will also probably post this in some thread somewhere. After I get back from the store. You should be able to access it from the same imgur link in the op: http://imgur.com/a/TDCyB

As long as it supports the required extensions, full functionality is available.

/mapmove will still work even if you aren't connected to an XMPP server at all; that is all handled locally. If the connection fails what happens is you won't be able to see or chat with anyone else.

Well, I'm satisfied with the updates. Since the Titan Network twitter posted this particular thread, I think it should probably be moved somewhere more relevant.

I may do more to help clarify what the programs do or how to install them or something, but I think that someone with a better grasp of that should come up with a tutorial or simple description of that, which I could put images to. I'm thinking something like "the CoH client has all this: *images of game assets*. Icon and Paragon Chat don't do anything to that, or to each other *image of the three programs in the same folder*". Along those lines.

Nicely done!  I'm keeping a copy of the long graphic for future reference and just because I like it so much!  Very impressive.  Clear.  Concise.  Legible.

Because of you, I uploaded the new version as a long image, in addition to updating the album! You can get the new long version here: http://imgur.com/JeFCfLz

Correction: Tequila was created by Starsman, I did some changes to it but the bulk of the work (and the person in charge of fixing problems with it) is Starsman. He's just lazy and doesn't want to publish to Git or really post much at all.

Correction: the album title still reads "and the Tequila and Island Rum installers were made by Leandro and Manga, respectively."

This is fun!  ;D

Counter-correction: that's the description, not the title.
