Super Academy: A Superhero Comedy Webseries
« on: April 04, 2014, 09:05:15 PM »
Back in November-December, a group of folks ran a Kickstarter campaign to get a superhero-based comedy webseries off the ground. They hit an unforseen snag though; they ran their campaign during the weeks leading up to the holidays, when people's money was tight and their attention was elsewhere. So unfortunately their first attempt was unsuccessful.

But now, like any good superhero, they've regrouped and they're running the mission again!

The series is called "Super Academy". It's about a group of students enrolled in a superhero training academy, and all the awkwardness and self discovery that happens at that point in life. It centers particularly around the shy and insecure Power Kid, whose greatest fear is people discovering that he's the son of a world-famous supervillain, and the brooding Dark Cop, an anti-social super genius with ego issues. They kicked things off with a 20 minute first episode which you can watch on Youtube.

Shortly after that they launched the KS campaign, with a modest $12,000 goal. It was well on its way, but as it fell so close to the holidays it didn't catch on like it otherwise could have. Since then they've been brainstorming about ways to improve the campaign, and setting things up to try again. Which they'll be doing soon.

On April 18th they will be launching a new Kickstarter campaign, and they have been revealing several new videos leading up to the launch. New video shorts (I loved Dark Cop's Valentines message!) as well as behind the scenes footage can be found on their Youtube channel, and news and updates can be found on their Facebook page.

The series' creator, Ben Lifson, recently sat down with Krnl Mandrake over at Namesake Radio to discuss the re-launch. You can listen to the interview here, and check out the Shows and Interviews section of the forums for others if you like.

I'll be sure and update with the link to the re-launch as well as any other important news. Thanks for checking it out!

It shows a slight bit of promise but very slight.  I have no clue why they believe they need a kickstarter considering that they have absolutely zero special effects and their costumes could be made out of junk found around anybodies house.

I'm not trying to be mean, but it just plain isn't good.  There are plenty of fan web series out there that have good special effects and decent scripts (though very few with good actors) that did all the work on their own.  If they want money then their pilot should look like a low budget tv series, not a highschool play.

Many independent productions are more about enthusiasm than experience. With a little outside support they can get the chance to make more videos, do bigger things with them, and improve upon what they've already accomplished. I'm looking forward to seeing what they can do with some fan assistance.

Not everyone is going to like every idea they see. But thanks for checking it out. :)

The new campaign has now launched!

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/benlifson/super-academy-a-superhero-comedy-series

The biggest change from the first campaign is that now they're going for three 15-20 minute episodes rather than several 8-10 minute ones. This helps them streamline things so that (1) it costs less to produce, and (2) it cuts away extra parts that don't necessarily add to the larger storyline.

The rewards available range from collectible cards of the characters and some really cool-looking posters, right up to a physical cameo, the costume worn by the main characters (only one each of those of course), and even a product placement in the show of your company logo and/or product.

It's off to a great start too! Of the $8,000 they're looking for, they've already received $1,325 in the first couple hours. Excellent way to kick things off!

For those of you who are interested, the project has reached its goal and will be funded! It currently sits at $8,125, of the $8,000 goal they had originally set. And with 9 days still to go, the team has decided to reach for a couple stretch goals next.

At $9,000 they will be able to pay for the use of a "jerk vest", a tool that will allow them to ramp up the action scenes by adding wire based stunts. (That's the ones where you swing around suspended on cables to simulate action sequences that wouldn't otherwise be possible to recreate.)

And at $11,000 they will be making a fourth episode to add to the storyline! This will be a full-fledged episode like the other three, not a short piece like the promotional ones they've been releasing alongside the Kickstarter campaign.

Congratulations to Ben and the team on their success!

Well the campaign's done now, and not only did they get the $9,000 for the stunt equipment, they also reached the $11,000 goal to make the fourth episode!

The total pledged came to $11,047. So barring any RL-based hiccups that prevent some of the larger pledges from going through, they should be able to make all four episodes. And even if a couple here and there don't fulfill, I believe they're close enough to cover a small gap without any major setbacks.

Congratulations to Ben and the team! I'm really looking forward to seeing the show when it's finished.
