Title: Alert the Colbert Nation (We need a Colbert SuperNation TV-Ready Webpage!)
Post by: Victoria Victrix on December 08, 2012, 09:55:45 AM
We started this over in the Hail Mary TF, but I think we need to move it here, because this needs to be BIG.

Steven Colbert is a huge geek.  He LOVES comic books and superheroes.

There was a Colbert Nation SG.

His on-air persona is geographically challenged enough to conflate South Korea with North Korea.

EVIL KOREANS DESTROYED HIS SUPER GROUP!

http://www.colbertnation.com/
If you would like to write Stephen, you can mail etters to:

Stephen Colbert
c/o The Colbert Report
Comedy Central
513 West 54th Street
New York, NY 10019

Phone: 212-262-6033

We need a big splashy webpage that is TV ready with Evil NCSoft CRUSHING the valiant and patriotic heroes of the Colbert Nation and a link to the SaveCoH page.

CAN YOU DO THIS?

HELL YES, YOU CAN!

This needs to be either stickied, or stickied in its own subsection.

It also needs an example of what is "TV ready", for those who don't know.

For those of us on the wrong end of the planet where regular or even air mail doesn't reach very quickly, does anyone have an idea what the best route would be? I tend to get a little too wordy for Twitter.

 Vikki Kill Stealed My Mob!

(Insert Grin Here)

It's okay, I stole it from kalynnda13 and the initial discussion here here if you care to read:
http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index.php/topic,6606.0.html

But here is the gist of it.  As reported above, Stephen Colbert is a huge geek.  He literally possess Captain America's Shield.  Several years back when Marvel ran the Winter Soldier Arc (which is rumored to be the plotline of the upcoming movie) they had Captain America assassinated.  Marvel Editors appeared on The Colbert Report and said Captain America left his shield to Stephen Colbert in his will as Stephen was the only American worthy of carrying on the fight.

Stephen has his own super hero/super spy, Tek Jansen, who had nine 'episodes' aired on the Colbert Report and ran as a five issue special comic from Oni Press.

Stephen Colbert is one of us.

The On Air Personality that is Stephen Colbert is on our side.  This is exactly the kind of comedy his show does.  An American Institution/Company being destroyed by evil communistic forces.  Or by communists that don't understand good old American free market economy.

His persona on the show is of a Right Wing commentator who speaks loudly and often about things he doesn't really understand but so long as they feel like they are right, then that's just fine.  Under this guise, he has fought for the rights of migrant workers, even traveling to speak before Congressional Hearings on the subject.

More importantly for us, The Colbert Report is a topical show, written daily for production in the evenings, so there is every chance we could get a mention if we can just catch their attention.

So this is the plan.  Tweet and Twitter and Splash his Face Book Page with the 'Save CoH' campaign.  We need the immediate impact that internet contact can provide.  I am not saying "You Can't Write Letters!" but...  well the truth is that with the Holidays coming fast, his show will be going into reruns in the next week or so, and we want to get mentioned before that happens.

I do not feel this sort of campaign is out of order.  The Twitter Account information is publicly available from Comedy Central's website.

Comedy Central can be contacted via website feedback at

The idea is to try and hit them hard starting tonight/tomorrow morning (depending on your time zone) with the intent of having the Twitter Feed be buzzing with City of Heroes.  Some intern has the job of reading the Twitter feed come Monday morning and we want him to have a reason to tell the writers of the show about us.

For those who have never seen his show (all both of you); the intro is him decending Iron Man style holding an American flag and landing in same fist down Iron Man style. Also, unless your blind, you will see Captain America's shield behind his head in the background. Yeah. He's like us. :D

If we get our home back and have super groups again. Gonna have to recreate the Colbert Nation and let more people join lol. The only members left at the end were just me and my irl friends. Everyone else who played apparently quit the game before the end unfortunately.

Steven Colbert is a satirist host of a comedic "news show"  which parodies American conservativism by pretending to be its strongest supporter in such an over the top way as to visibly expose holes in its logic. Steven Colbert himself began on John Stewart's The Daily Show as one of staff such as Ed Helms and Samantha Bee. Eventually he got his own show. That's pretty much a quick primer.

He's also entertained the white house, so he's sort of a big deal.

umm...he is the most famous t.v personality in the News world.

He is one of those comedy news channel personalities and you REALLY should watch one of his shows. Just watch on the website. Not as Funny as John Stewart but he found a better mix of Factual and comedy than he did and we learn a lot more from watching him vs john when all we want is a few laughs because he said a funny thing.

Who is more funny/informative often depends on the night.

John's guests are often less informative though, which gives Steven an edge on that angle.

An example of a TV-ready webpage is this:

When we get their attention we have to think in terms of the visual equivalent of a soundbite.  One splashy page that sums up EVERYTHING, with a single click-through to, say, here and Leandro's SaveCoH page.

We need a BIG graphic with Evil NCSoft crushing the Colbert SuperNation beneath its feet, and maybe bashing the top of the Atlas park dome (and the FLAG!) over with its fist.  I'd say NCSoft as a Faceless Giant Corporate goon in a suit with an NCSOFT chest badge.

Title over the graphic: EVIL KOREAN CORPORATION DESTROYS COLBERT SUPERNATION!

Text under the graphic: On Dec 1, NCSoft, a Korean gaming corporation, unilaterally shut down the most popular superhero game in the world, City of Heroes, destroying in one blow thousands of characters, including the Colbert SuperNation.  For more information click HERE.

That gives the interns everything they want to know to see if they will take it one step higher.  If they do, they get directed to Titan Net and SaveCoH for a lot more information.

CAN YOU DO THIS?  I think you can!

Basically just giving this a bump since I feel I might have derailed the thread yesterday.

This would be an excellent idea.  Who knows?  If we pull it off they might even use YOUR WORK on their webpage or take a screen grab and use it as a splash if we get lucky enough to get an On Air mention.

Do you guys still need someone to build this site?  I can do it if you want.  I was waiting to see if someone who does this for a living was going to step up before I said anything.  I'm a design student, but I can make a fairly decent web page.  Nothing terribly, terribly fancy or anything, but not bad looking.

Web design was my first "career", back before we lived in a world where planes fly into buildings.

I guess they just open a browser and go to websites on that show? If it's just a splash screen, my gut says to do it as an adobe pdf instead of a webpage. And if not a pdf, a single large image with click-able "image map" sections for the links? I don't think we need to go crazy with html here.

I'm getting a classic "Aliens Destroy City" front page of a newspaper vibe.

Hmm... tall order. Okay, I'll take a shot.

I don't watch Colbert, so what's the "Colbert SuperNation" look like?

I have no personal knowledge of how much or how little research they might do.  Websurfing for stuff your boss might want to talk about On Air is probably dependent on individual taste and how much free time you might have allocated to it.  So more complex might catch their attention, or might be wasted if the week has a lot of other stories already in motion.

We are working against the holidays, which have some traditional themes and memes of their own, but there isn't much else going on in politics to distract them either.  Mostly since y'all are doing this on your spare time, and I have no idea how much work it is as I only really worked hardware side on computers, anything you can give time to is great.

Okay yeah, so um, if this is going to be a racist anti Korean thing and not an anti evil corporation thing, I'm out.  I'm using Godzilla 'cause I couldn't find a good faceless big bad corporate  graphic thing.  I'm also not real keen on the whole "Evil KOREAN Corporation" thing. Evil Foreign Corporation fine.

But you can't really use Psy because he is recognizable as identifiably Korean.  Also, isn't he kind of anti everything NCSoft represents?

Another note... the burning American flag.... gonna piss people off.  Also, it makes it a nationalistic thing, not a corporation vs. the little guy thing.

If that's what y'all are going for specifically- Evil Koreans vs. Americans, I'm just going to back away slowly from this whole project and respectfully let you all figure it out for yourself.

I was thinking this was a NCSoft vs. Colbert's Supergroup (aka the little guy).

Picture Publisher. BMPs are fine. You still have my e-mail, right?

(How did I end up doing art? I'm an actor. I can't do much more than cut-and-paste.)

"...if this is going to be a racist anti Korean thing and not an anti evil corporation thing, I'm out."

Lily... first, have you actually seen The Colbert Report? It makes fun of nationalist stupidity by going over-the-top with it. My image is made for that comedy. I hope you don't think I'm really like that! And second... get your own done -- your way -- and don't worry about what I'm doing! Yeesh!

It's not really any more racist that the whole "Axis of Evil" rhetoric that we got from former US President Bush. We're shooting for Colbert's on-air persona having a fuzzy understanding, at best, so he would be likely to muddle North and South Korea.

I haven't seen it, so yeah, I don't have the context.

The reason I'm worried about it is because I'm the one making the web page where the image is going to go.

I'm thinking maybe it's best if I didn't, because I obviously don't understand the whole thing not having seen the show.  I'm pretty uncomfortable with where this is going, not having the context to understand it. I've just never had cable, so I've never seen the show.

Maybe Tim can make the page?

All this time I thought these two variants of Atlas Park lined up with each other. Sadly, turns out they don't. Well, the war walls do, and the Atlas statue does, but for some reason the city hall scale is off. Oh well.

Here's both versions. Regular AP under red sky (that's as far out as I can go without the Atlas statue getting in the way) and the demolished one.

I have been meaning... to up the ante with my Save City of Zero Wing (http://youtu.be/gAJlQ6o8p9g) video, and take it up to eleven by redrawing some sprites with Statesman as the Captain (already has blue shirt), or Tae Jin Kim (or whatever his name, NCSoft's CEO) as Cats. Plus make a flying titan Network logo fly in the closing take (and remove the petition and bad twitter link at the end). If I had the time, also make a 8-bit version of a City of Heroes music in the same instruments (may if I can find a "mario music"-like game rom for the genesis), so, what do you think, all ? Who could help me ? I'm able to hand out simple assignments for those who want to give it a try, one sprite/thing at a time, and I'm going to make the final cut (again, in PowerPoint !!).

If this site is meant to be an Onion type of story, with a sarcastic satire outlook on the whole thing, I think the site name needs to be a bit more 'realistic.' Like... if there really WERE a giant business guy going around smashing buildings (and most of the world was somehow oblivious to it) and we needed to notify humanity about it... what would we want the domain name to be?

To reiterate a point, no one is asking anyone to do anything that makes them uncomfortable.  Comedy is very subjective.  Especially when its dealing with sarcasm and irony.  Please don't let anyone push you into doing something you do not want to do.

With that out of the way....

I didn't even recognize the Gungun Style guy myself, but it would have been recognized by others.  Trying to decide if it's good or not.  One of the older running bits on the show was Stephen's 'fame' as a former Korean Pop artist himself.  Couple fake videos of him and a mock 'war' with a Korean artists that beat him out for a Grammy one year.  So using a famous Korean singer's image could actually go either way.

If you are going to go with Business Suits as the enemy, Stephen is a big fan of profitable business.  Make sure you stress how much money they are losing by attacking CoH.

Please don't wait?

VV is wonderful and all, but she also has a real life that needs tending to.  We can't expect her to shoulder all responsibility for every decision being made.  I think we can all come up with something and surprise her with a finished product.

That, and I really cannot stress enough that faster is not always better, but in this case it is important.  If we want this to be something the Disney Execs hear about before they make their decision then it would have a better chance of success if it caught the attention of the Colbert Report before they shut down for the holidays.

I think people are missing the very dry sense of humor coming across the internet here...

I'm saying we are all getting wound up - i.e. the absolutely ridiculous website suggestion I gave - seriously? No way.

Let's just all get down to brass tacks here. I think that everyone has a good idea here, but we need to get it going so... let's get it going. Before I purchase a domain name let's decide what it should be. realistically of course. (I will refrain from any comedic ideas this time)

I think a good comic relief image like the one Lily posted will be great, could even use it as the entire backdrop of the site and then go a bit serious with articles, article snipets that link out to their respective websites, etc. End result should be a launchpad type website. Image to suck you in -> Main brief easy to read impact message -> Eye catching headers for other articles taking you elsewhere of importance. Simple but effective information dispersal.

"VV is wonderful and all, but she also has a real life that needs tending to."

Same. We're in a hurry. Okay.

Until V.V. sounds off, run with Lil's image. Put the text in. I say call the site NCSOFTTRAMPLESGAMERS.net. Put in links to Titan and to Bison's game. Go to work, Mandrake.

Alrighty. I'll be able to start pputting the page together in about an hour... I'll leave the website domain name open for debate until I'm finished with it probably later this evening. I can easily transfer it to a domain at any time.

I'm on it.

Second draft.

Tim's image, brightened up considerably. Lil's monster. V.V.'s text, made NCSoft a "foreign" corporation (making Psy irrelevant.)

"...the burning American flag.... gonna piss people off."

The burning flag kicks butt.

Mandrake, could the website dissolve from the blue, intact view of City Hall to the destroyed red one periodically?

Ok, I've had a look - a couple things:

1)  The sides of the picture are getting trimmed off - at least the left side is for me.  I'm currently viewing it using Google Chrome on 1024x768 resolution.
2)  VyoletRose's image is the best I see so far here.  Sorry, call 'em like a I see 'em.  :-)
3)  When you click on the more info link, neither the Titan Network or SaveCoH websites are hyperlinks, and they should be.

"VyoletRose's image is the best I see so far here.  Sorry, call 'em like a I see 'em."

No offense taken, I agree.

If it's possible, dissolve from a staid, quiet image of City Hall to Vy's pic periodically.

I could put my text on Rose's pic, and we could recycle the "black box" of text -as- the clickie. I'll provide these elements.

Clean Atlas Park (resized by me. Should be an easy one-to-one correspondence.)

A City Hall variant.

Vys:

Clickybox (again, should be sized to fit.):

Those should be the elements you need.

Looking better!  :-)

New picture and margins fixed - excellent.

More info page still has no Titan or SaveCoH hyperlinks.

She previous response by Colette - edited to include the images you need.

Edit:

Come to think of it, the hyperlinks should be switched on the Korean Times and Starburst Magazine section.  Instead of being in the section headers, make the article titles below them are the hyperlinks - "Unethical Game Closure" and "The Time Has Come to Boycott NCSoft".

- resolution fixes are in
- Picture fade ins are in: Coh title screen 5 second pause fades to angry Kim. 5 Second pause shuffles between them thereafter.
- Click Here button moved to strategic postion that works well for both pictures that is nicely visible to visitors and does not cover up anything visualy important.

Before I update any links: Do we want TitanNetworks to go directly to the forums, or to the main website?

Ok then...

- All links updated: Titan goes to recommended Save our coh forum link, SaveCOH goes to respective site, Article titile links are also clickable
- Header graphic 'clickbox' added to front page
- Lined up everything for standard 1024 x 768 resolution, confined to center for any display.

Caveat: I've thrown this together using a web based interface which is HTML 5 based called 'wix'. There will most likely be some web browsers that possibly won't see it just right.
I've tried it in FireFox, Google Chrome, and IE without issue. Seamonkey has a bit of an issue with Title fonts being larger and therefore the Launchpad page is a little bit off, but nothing out of scope.

(Edited to adjust wording that possibly made it sound as if I had invented wix. lol)

...

Trust me, from years of website design, implementation, and scripting... it is better to leave them both as available to click-thru. What one person sees as logical - another does not. Especially on these one or two page wonders you need the 'change in cursor' to happen as easy and large of an area as possible so people see it and use it. I made it a point to throw a *little* bit of professional look into page 2, but that's about it. Need to stick with the overall theme.

I will change it if everyone feels it must be so. I simply recommend against the change. Nothing ill-will meant.

I did not even see that you had posted other pictures for me to use... just went back and looked at the disolve statement.
I do not have a 'dissolve' effect to use without going into extra coding at the moment. The fade in and out effect is the best I have to offer for now sorry.

OK let's have a tight paragraph on the second page just above the two clickthroughs.

"On December 1, 2012, NCSoft closed City of Heroes, the first, most popular, and most highly regarded superhero online game, ever.  With one click of a button, they displaced thousands of players from a game that was still profitable and unique, a game playable by entire families, and a game played by the Colbert SuperNation, a superhero group dedicated to Stephen Colbert.  The players, in the spirit of The Heroic Patriot Colbert, are not taking this sitting down.  We are going to make our noble community live again!  Here's how you can help!"

Another click-through, perhaps.  We need to keep the first two pages as simple as possible for maximum penetration-past-intern.

Larry: There is very little difference between writing a sound bite, a solid joke, or an aphorism.  It is a distillation of a big concept, into few (but perfect) words, that requires the listener to think something through themselves, albeit quickly.  It is participatory, but for just a flash.  They key to its effectiveness is that such a thing makes the listener relate to the writer for a vital instant, and in getting the joke, they join with the writer.

Reiteration has been put in place at the top of second page above the click-thrus to Titan and SaveCOH.

As this is for a 'media blitz' scenario (That was what I understood it to be) I would highly recommend a single link - perhaps a third click-thru, that would take people to another section of the website that I can then build whatever you like from there... such as memes, videos, posts of interest, etc. keeping it as a sort of a separate although related entity. Don't want to distract from VV's initial intention.

Could I have some input on that?

HAHAHA.. nice.

I'm afraid I will have to call it a night for now and return to this tomorrow evening when I get back from my service calls. I'm going to keep checking back for the next 30 min or so for any final changes I need to make to the current site as it is - holler at me here for any placement or spelling changes, etc. Aside from that, any new pages and additions I'll have to wait on. No worries though... we can have all sorts of fun with it :)

Think we could have perhaps 6 panels on one 'page', that could tell the story in a nutshell? This is for a comic book universe anyway, and people like pictures ;)

True, and I certainly don't have a problem with that. I do think that would be a good idea for it's own page however. The reason for this is that although a comic book (especially for this reference as you pointed out) is a great presentation, it is also a very big distraction for the casual reader that is not necessarily on the same wavelength that we all are. If we want maximum impact we want easy to read, easy to follow, simple to absorb information that will take you to even more information as it garners interest.

A comic book layout tends to entice the niche it applies to, but not the general population. Especially those that have 'clutter' issues with web pages. Long story here, but the reason websites have trended toward more and more minimalistic designs is that we've all figured out over time that there is a HUGE market of people that can't focus and follow websites with too much information and distraction. Falls into the old 'F' design theory, etc.

Anyway, I like the idea, but think we should dedicate a page to it, not create the front / second pages in that format.

Oh, I concur, and defer to you in all things web.

I think page one is locked, pending further art refinements from Vy an' me.

Page two as well, except you could put a clicky for "more," leading to another page for our videos, the parody art, and anything else the good folks here suggest. Title it "multimedia" or somesuch.

As I said to V.V. earlier, I believe if we get onto TV, that will be checkmate. NCSoft can't withstand that.

I'm going to bed too. Good work, all. G'night.

- Grammar and capitolization changes - will do
- Facebook icon - That can be done, but not sure about the ethics of attaching a page to someone elses facebook page?
-- I have a social plugin, can choose any number of thumbnails - Facebook, Twitter, Google+, RSS, etc. Click and take you to your social media. Acceptable to be someone elses though? Never done that in all my years. I'll let you all decide.
- fine print footer - done just forgot to do that - thanks for the reminder.

We don't want to make a racist statement.

I have already reported the Frog as a unicorn. But let's go ahead and discuss the issue, just to be clear.

I'm comfortable with the use of the "Angry Asian" meme. NCSoft has in fact misbehaved, and they are in fact Asian. We are not saying with this image that all Asains are good, bad, angry, or anything. The character is clearly labeled "NCSoft," and that is who we are angry with.

The precursor image used the singer Psy, who has become the "face of Korea" in pop culture's eyes. Vy here has wisely changed that to this generic Asian, who may be Korean, Chinese, Japanese, whatever. We have also at Lily's promptings changed "Korean" to "foreign."

The use of the American Flag in the background is less inflamatory than my previous use of a burning flag. It is appropriate for the Colbert show, which satirizes racism and jingoism.

(And lest I be accused of crazy-American nationalism in these claims, I remind everyone that Superman, the primal superhero, was created by Jewish immigrants and a Canadian. The American Way is to accept the contributions of all who choose to live here, equally and without discrimination.)

Is our use of imagery and words inflamatory? Yes indeed! Is it aimed against Koreans or Asians per se? No. Is it aimed squarely at NCSoft? Yes.

However, I do invite -- reasonable -- dissenting opinions.

Thank you kindly. Unicorns are such lovely creatures and I do enjoy being considered one, even though I feel comfortable being a simple frog.

As for the rest of your post - well - the first thing that pops into my mind when I see that image is racism, plain and simple. I do not have a mental uplink to author's brain to know that their motives were pure and honest, even though I know the context which the intended recipient may not be very familiar with. And while I do not want to speak for people I do not know about how they will respond, my common sense says the reaction to this image will be very negative.

I think Vy's image rocks! And so do a lot of people here. I think it captures just how plain mad we are at NCSoft.

However, with teeth gritted, I will happily look over any alternative image you'd care to contribute, Frog. So show us what'cha got already.

I know you are considering me to be your enemy right now, but I am really not. I am trying to help. City of Heroes is just as dear to me as it is to you. But I strongly believe that if we have any chance at bringing the game back to life at all, we need to exert caution and - to be blunt - avoid doing stupid things. Acting out of anger is never a good idea. It will bring harm to you and may actually help those you are trying to hurt. They'll point at you (and us all), yell "hey, look, these guys are racists" and any positive PR we may have accumulated will drop like a dead fly. Have you considered all this before you started using the campaign to save CoH as an outlet for all your negative emotions related to the game closure?

Now, Lily, who shared your concerns, offered a Godzilla-like monster. Perhaps that approach would assuage your concerns? Or maybe you have a better idea. I for one would like to avoid anything being labeled as "racist", but when the company is from another country run by someone that is a native of said country there is not much one could do that would not be labeled as "racist" when the focus is what it is.

Frog is there a picture that you think would be a better suggestion than the one that has been created. So please help us with this.

We don't want to appear negative to any one culture. But we are criticizing NCSoft, which just so happens to be a foreign company. We should keep in mind Frog's point of view because that might be the way the general public might see it.

Lets remember - this is for Steven Colbert. He himself is a satire of conservative political pundits. Would such a conservative be against corporations? even evil ones? Or would he poke fun at the way some news corporations profit off of fear by demonizing another country's big business methods? Methods which hurt our western market.

However, I am curious.... if we changed the image to portray EVIL CORPORATION DESTROYED HIS SUPER GROUP! - would that get the point across as a satire against a foreign company destroying his beloved American Supergroup?

I am working on an alternative image though...

Why not use the one posted here http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index.php/topic,5707.msg70149.html#msg70149 ? It's brilliant, it's funny and  it's to the point. If any image deserves to be the "face" for the campaign, it is this one.

edit: and most of all it illustrates corporate indifference that killed the game effectively. I am not championing for this particular image, mind you. But it shows that it can be done without stepping on a thin ice by using an image of a stereotypically portrayed Asian person with a handfull of dollars and American flag in the background.

Yes, well, I am rather disappointing, am I not? But here's an idea: we are all together in this boat and those concerns stems from me caring about both the game and thus also the outcome of your campaign. Not because I am trying to upend your work. I could have taken my toys and left after the first personal attack. Or a second one. Or one of the later ones. I didn't because I. Care. For. The. The pose on the Godzilla one looks like an ad for something. I vaguely recall something like that used on posters to sell some kind of soda or other canned drink when I was in Japan a few years ago. It's good, but it loses something from the first one.

Touchy subject, but when I saw the first image (as well-done as it was!), I thought, "Youch, that's opening us to up some potentially not-so-good stuff." I'm quite certain the intent is to target NCSoft, but other people might not see it that way. I think to keep the focus on getting the game sold, we should avoid even the appearance of targeting a group of people based on Characteristic X. It's not hyper-sensitive political correctness, it's being aware that as Americans we enjoy a pretty unique place in the world and what we think of as "casual" or funny may not look the same to other people or cultures. I would rather err on the side of caution and keep the attention on CoH rather than end in a situation with, "Wow, are those CoH fans racists?"

Not that I think anyone here is going for that, but the appearance of something can often matter more than the intent. Case in point: Virgin Mobile released an ad (http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout/virgin-mobile-us-apologizes-pulls-offensive-ad-204622193.html) this week that had a guy standing behind his wife with a gift. It said something like "gift or chloroform" and while I didn't see it as all that offensive at first, other people certainly did and the company had to apologize. I doubt the person who came up with that ad was advocating rape or knocking someone out and stealing their stuff, but the message's intent didn't translate well.

I really like VyoletRose's ad!

Hmm...

Okay, I will work on the Godzilla image on my own time. If the Colbert people think Mr. Angry Asian is inappropriate, we'll have the backup ready to switch out instantly. I believe that addresses the Frog's concerns, yes?

Frog, we welcome contrary opinions and ideas here, we really do. I know that I personally need friends to yank my leash every once in a while, and I appreciate their trouble. But you better learn some tact and some humility, or you'll deserve every bit of the misery you're calling down on yourself. Look how Andy did it. That's how it's done.

Vy... dang, you're good! I think that might be interpreted as "blackface" now, but I adore those fireballs! Could you add those to Mr. Angry Asian? And don't delete the fire. The fire rocked.

His hands are black too, so it looked more like a silhouette to me. Maybe make him grey versus black? And I agree, I love those fireballs!

"Maybe make him grey versus black?"

Narrow the nose, give him long straight hair like Eddie Van Halen. Make sure the eyes aren't almond-shaped. Make him as "caucasian" as possible. Leave the flag out of this version. A few fewer fireballs, maybe? Little busy. We'll save this as our backup.

Do that, Vy, and I'll cancel Godzilla. Love your work!  :)

I would appreciate it if you refrained from such backhanded conciliatory efforts. Instead give it some time. I do not hold any grudge against you and I do realize that I hurt your ego several times today, but hopefully a couple of days will bring some perspective to the whole thing and you would be able to reach out to me again, this time with honest intentions.

Now now - I think everyone's input is valid here and together we will get the right image that will convey the message we want for the Colbert Show.

Here's an image with the request for a grey face dude...

And here's our familiar angry dude...  Maybe the overuse of the NCSoft logo will push the point that its about NCSoft and not Korea business in general.

I think the overall idea/look of Vy's burning City Hall picture is great. I also really like the NCsoft fireballs.

For the picture with the black silhouette, unfortunately the first thing it made me think of was "blackface". I also think the figure's a bit creepy, but maybe that's just me.

I can see where the "angry Asian man" might be received by some as racist. I think it would help a lot if you could actually use Kim Taek-Jin's face, rather than using a generic Asian man in his place. Could that be done without compromising the feel of the picture?

Though I actually kinda like Godzilla, too.

I like angry guy (is he Asian, Portuguese, Inuit, Hawaiian, Latino, Samoan?).  The grey-faced cartoon is creepy.  Godzilla just seems silly and overused.

Could the NCSoft Building be anthropomorphized (is that the word for it?)... give THIS (http://images.mmosite.com/news/2009/08/12/ncsoft/0812NCsoft_clip_image001.jpg) an angry face and arms?

I just happened to be listening to a  remix of the Lavos theme from Chrono Trigger.

I now can't just not hear him lavos screaming.  Worse a quote from the game popped into my mine.

Lucca: Now I understand...

It lives on a planet for as long as
possible, stealing away the most vital
   resources...

It combined the DNA it found here
with its own, and gave birth to those
   creatures up on Death Peak.

Eventually the young must migrate to
   other planets...to repeat the cycle...

It really suits how NCSOFT operates imho.

I think we are good where we are at for now anyway. At this point any other changes to the front page images I am going to leave solely to the discretion of Vy or Colette. As far as I can tell I have updated both images to the latest versions.

Now then I am going to step in here and say a few things. This is a community project, however I am putting my foot down on any further PC issues. This particular project is targeted toward a niche part of a larger community. That niche being part of an exterior community that is all about a particular ease of mind and enjoyment that we are attempting to access for publicity. Many people are working hard on this project myself included and although I appreciate everyone has their own opinions and I don't mind hearing them out - now that we've had those debates I don't want them to keep trickling in here.

Unless something is just blatantly racist or bigoted then please do not start in on me or anyone else here. Otherwise I will be glad to hand this off to someone else and you can hand out trophies to everyone that came in 10th place. Whatever floats your boat. Yes I am a bit defensive of those that work hard, but at the same time I really get tired of the constant bickering on this subject, especially when it has all been gone over. If you are personally offended then please PM me and I'll be happy to have a rational and sincere discussion with you about the matter.

We'll never change the world in which we live so long as we fear to touch that world should we actually break it. - Manny

OK this was Larry, Mr Professional Artist putting in his two cents

Quote
Larry: Not so sure about that revision honestly.  The heroes in the air in the Before pic now are obviously copy-paste-flipped... the symmetry glares out and makes it look sort of "ballot stuffed."
Larry: And the After pic had more impact without the copy-pasted NCsoft fireballs.  It has been overworked, IMO.
Larry: Too busy.
Larry: The last images worked well at a glance, and had focus.

You may feel free to ignore the critique

We'll work on simplifying tomorrow. Promise. :)
Title: Re: Alert the Colbert Nation (We need a Colbert SuperNation TV-Ready Webpage!)
Post by: TimtheEnchanter on December 12, 2012, 04:45:47 AM
I'm a little bit of both - web designer and graphic artist - used to be anyway. I'm used to tons of revisions before something hits perfectly. And typically that involves simplification.

On Larry's comments:

(From a media perspective, I know Colbert tends to show web links, so... if this is something we hope to get thrown up on TV's all over the world, yeah, it's too complex. This needs to be something that's easy to see from a living room couch, not just from a computer chair. )

I have an alternative idea to the NCsoft fireballs, something more subtle with embers floating in the air, and a layer of mist over the ground. It's possible the NCsoft logo isn't needed at all in the splash screen. And if it does, it should only appear once. Perhaps that should be the translucent backdrop, in place of how the U.S. flag was used in one of the earlier versions.

As for the mirrored flying heroes in the first picture... why did  that even happen? Didn't Leandro's vid contain enough of them flying that such a thing wasn't necessary?
Title: Re: Alert the Colbert Nation (We need a Colbert SuperNation TV-Ready Webpage!)
Post by: Mandrake on December 12, 2012, 05:37:48 AM
Ok then I'll throw my 2 cents in... I think that eye-candy wise for easy viewing and most importantly... messaging:

Before Atlas: Original Atlas City Hall with that seriously awesome Statesman fade in the background. Put in a few heroes, maybe even just one. Artistic license of course.
After Atlas: Just Kim and his 3 'honeys' with that little glow about him. Statesman faceplanted in the foreground works for me either way. NCSoft logo was nicely placed in the original - not too big, but perfectly noticeable especially when I route it through the TV.

I don't think the fire-storm should be present. On a 42" TV it immediately loses message. Your eyes start going to the individual balls that have defined circles and logos inside them.

So anywho.. as I said, I'm just the guy that makes things fit together on the page so people will best take notice of what we want them to and keep directing them on their way. I'm not necessarily the best to give out artistic advice.

Now let's get one thing STRAIGHT here, Green Frog and anyone else who wants to flail arms and scream about racism.

This image and website are NOT for general public consumption.  We are NOT going to make it part of the SaveCoH campaign as a whole.

My flailing arms isn't about the Colbert show. It is about the fact that the debate on these publicly accessible - for example by a journalist that has found CoH story interesting - boards freely wanders into the race territory (it is common to emphasize the fact that the company that wronged us is Asian or in particular Korean, that the game closure is surely caused by cultural differences and so on - like western companies are not known to pull similar stunts) and mostly everyone here seems to be okay with that. This stuff is accumulating and may bite us in our behinds when we least expect it. I know, I know. It's about giving our anger an outlet. It still doesn't change the fact that if this continues unchecked, we will end up as the villain here in the eyes of the people we hope to get on our side. So with the expectation that I will draw some of that anger at myself I am stepping in saying that no, sorry, in my opinion this is not okay. If not because of basic human decency, then because it may hurt our goals.

You are giving modern journalists way too much credit for being willing to actually do some research.  When was the last time you saw a story that wasn't a recycled press release or taken straight off Reuters.

Maybe I'm wrong about this, but I always thought even the use of the "Korean" or "Asian" when it applies to referencing NCsoft in articles, isn't for racial purposes. If anything it's more Nationalist, but that's still a strong word. I don't know if I can convey it properly or not. In a similar instance, when someone in the West complains, "China is stealing our jobs!", I've never heard anyone crying racism over it. China just happens to be the 'flagship' of the gradual Asian takeover of the whole world economy and has become a catch-all symbol of it. In a similar light, the termination of U.S. employees by an Asian company, from a journalism perspective, is far too valuable to ignore. In the minds of much of the U.S. population, we're already being economically kicked to the ground, spat on, and sexually violated by Asian businesses. Mentioning Korea in reports greatly increases the odds that an individual will read it. Even those who don't care about video games, will be more likely to take notice when they see that.

Enough about this. If you want to have a debate about racism - move on to another thread. I have re-read this entire thread to be certain of myself and the only racism and bigotry being spouted here is that which is being *insinuated* by yourself and a few others. You are taking things entirely out of context and you are either doing so intentionally or your world-view is such that you automatically do so and are therefore concerned for the cause by it. I commend you for being concerned but you are antagonizing the people who are working to create a specifically purposed work for no reason.

Would it be better for you if everyone were to just PM me their updates and that way people could not 'search and find' the apparently horrid results here?

If there actually are some sort of Asian hating or Korean hating posts / threads I've not read then by all means please go and yank their chain and I agree with you. This just isn't one of those threads. All you are doing is dragging other opinions, posts, links, and other unwanted materials of your ilk into this which is not what this thread is about. Please stop hijacking the thread.

Sorry to be blunt, but I'd be happy to discuss the issue - in another thread or PM. Get this out of here please.

Thanks,
Manny

It really isn't my thread it belongs to VV, I just want it to stay on track for everyone so we can stick to task. I also don't want people to get concerned to the point they are dissuaded from working together out of frustration and feeling patronized for their work.

Thank you for being considerate and leaving it where it is. My offer is genuine and I'm happy to take up any conversation you wish to have via PM if you still find concerns or issues.

Take care,

Back to basics!

Tomorrow? I lied.

Okay, I went back to the very ground level. So I was able to take care of a lot of little annoyances that nobody but me would notice.

I cut the torches. I love the torches. But they draw the eye too much. I put in only three flyers. More would be busy. Got rid of the crowd on the dome. Put in a cool American flag because it's the Stephen Colbert show, dagnabbit!

Does this correct the busy-ness?

My only feedback is that the images appear to have a lot of artifacting going on.  It's a flaw of working with jpgs, which are compressed and lossy with data as a rule.  You may want to consider exporting into .png from your graphics app and updating the site accordingly.  It'll look even better, I promise!

The problem is probably primarily that the image is being hosted on Photobucket. Photobucket kills resolution.

A bit of feedback about the picture composition.

The heroes being crowded around the stairs, with the rest of the scene empty actually makes the scene look rather deserted. It's an extension of the Offscreen Inertia (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/OffscreenInertia?from=Main.TethercatPrinciple) principle - if you scatter the heroes across the scene, it will convey the impression that there's a lot more of them. The reduced density might even work to reinforce that, as individual heroes, being much less obscured by each other, will be more easily identifiable.

For example, compare this still frame from the Unity Rally composite.

Spoiler for Hidden:

Because there are no visible "edges" to the crowd, the brain instinctively concludes that it must therefore extend indefinitely.

Spoiler for Hidden:

Similarly, I think that if you fill out the outside of the red line {so as not to obscure the Statesman Ghost and the city hall} with heroes, it might create a better "a mass of characters" impression.

That's my take on it, at least. Bear in mind, I'm not a graphics designer or artist, just a general sort of troubleshooter, so take my advice with a grain of salt.

Artifacting... an artist is only as good as his ingredients. I'm getting these images off the web, all of which are jpegs. Even with bmps, I'm sure for bandwidth issues mandrake wants the final product in jpeg. edit:  Is so, Mandrake? If you prefer .png I will deliver.

As to the crowd, I'm honestly content with it, because it acts as a single image rather than calling the eye around to look at all the scatter.

While I'm no artist, I was a letterer for comics. Really. Electronic, mind! I'm not Todd Klein. Anyhoo, I do understand the idea of guiding the eye around the page. We have three critical elements to express: City Hall, Obi Wan Statesman, and the crowd. They're in an off-center triangle, with the (unimportant and monochromatic) statue to the left providing balance. Y'all see?

Oh, what am I doing? Show, don't tell! Hollywood's most important rule (besides asking for gross.)
Hmm... now that I look at it, the brightness of the dome does draw the eye right there, doesn't it? Okay, I toned it down a little.

And while I don't wanna interfere with Vy's process, it seems to me she had a straight pyramid with earlier drafts, but as the fireballs and the Boobettes came in, the pyramid was lost.

OH! Also Vy and Mandrake, if I may bother you, earlier drafts were pretty much "before/after," the doors of City Hall remained in the same place for both images. Keeping that center seems to me vital to our before/after effect. ...Did that make sense?

PNG is a web ready image format that offers lossless (no artifacts even with many resaves) compression.

Hmm... from the top.

The Colbert Report is a Comedy Central parody of over-the-top conservative commentators such as Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coultour and so forth. It is hyper-patriotic and Stephen Colbert himself, while intelligent and well-informed, plays a rather ill-informed flag-waving dunce. He also likes comic books.

(I don't even own a TV, and I know this.)

We're trying to get our SaveCoH movement some TV coverage, by playing this as "eeebil foreign corporation destroys beautiful community of patriotic superheroes." Which isn't far off the mark, in my opinion. This makes us more visible, and continues to cast NCSoft in a negative light for how they've treated their once-loyal customers.

(At least that's how I understand it. I'm just making what V.V. asked for, and that's all on page one.)

Not only. The character artist of B&S if a very famous erotic or semi-erotic artist famous for drawing unrealistic females with overexagerrated feminine features, particularly, lemon boobs.

Sorry to quote you here, but your concerns seems to echo some of the others mentioned!

I certainly wasn't trying to discourage anyone or cause friction yesterday when I mentioned how the "ads" were coming off to me. I have almost zero skill with Photoshop or webpage editing, so please don't take any concerns I raise as "You suck, I could do better!" I definitely can't. I think the Colbert angle is a great one, and if he were to include it on his show, yes - it's likely he would do an over-the-top-foreign-entity-vs- America-hell-yes approach. From where I'm standing, we're better off focusing on NCSoft as an evil corporation that ate superheroes and then the Colbert people can decide if they want to include the evil corporation's location or whatever else as part of the satire.

The first run of images, while very well done, could have the appearance of racism - not satire. We don't have the reputation or history available in the public mind to be given the benefit of the doubt. Not like Colbert does (and even some people don't realize he's doing satire. Scary but true!) No, I don't think anyone here was going for anything other than satire, but I know this community. And yes, I understand this pitch is intended for the Colbert Report production team, but it's hard to control things on the internet and the only reason I voiced concerns was because I care about SaveCoH and all the people who are working so hard on it. I don't want our good intentions to be misconstrued and used against us. Not saying that will happen, but you never know.

I completely agree that if we're going to voice dissenting opinions, we should do so in a courteous and thoughtful way. But, I  guess I don't think raising concerns or pointing out how things might come across differently than they're intended to is disrespectful. I'm not saying this to perpetuate further strife or tension, but I also don't want to see people's voices get squashed out of fear of causing disagreements. I think it's safe to say those of us who are still around and still posting on NCSoft's wall and tweeting and sending letters to Disney LOVE this game and LOVE this community. That's all! I don't want people who don't know us to get the wrong idea.

Sorry you felt that way? I thought your designs were great, especially the final rendering. The last one had the feel I think everyone was going for - satire. I don't think suggesting alternative ways of doing things is a condemnation of intention.

It's okay to take into account if someone is going to be offended by using a particular image. Saying something is "too PC" is just a way to bushing off what are legitimate concerns.  The moment anyone ignores those concerns is the moment when bad things happen. Having racial and cultural sensitive is a good thing, it means you have a broad world view.

If we are creating an image to communicate our message with the potential of it being seen on television, then we better be darn sure we will not offend anyone or else message will be muddled.

Also,  if you create something and post it to a community, expect that people will give their honest opinion.  This is a good thing, it lets you know if your creation is sending the message you intended.

Let's all remember that everyone is volunteering their time and effort. Whether they are providing creative artwork or providing feedback. Everyone is supporting the movement in their own way.  So those who are creating images/artwork have to be able to take critiques and suggestions. Those giving feedback should do so constructively.

A JPEG file with high quality settings (I am assuming you are using Photoshop) created from the original image will have no visible artifacts either. These appear after you open and save a JPEG several times in a row, as the losses introduced by the compression algorithm accumulate. So assuming your source materials are not affected by their own artifacts, JPEG will provide you with the best file size and good quality. PNGs are bigger (although usually not that much), but because they do not alter the image in any way, they are great for reuse - like if the image goes viral and other people start creating their own variations based on the original image. Just thought this knowledge may prove to be helpful in your efforts.

Picture Publisher, actually.

"These appear after you open and save a JPEG several times in a row, as the losses introduced by the compression algorithm accumulate."

Ahh... got it. Makes sense. And yes, that is helpful.

I can start fresh again, and save to pngs. Have it ready for Mandrake.

Addendum: Nuts. still not gonna help. See, everything's from jpeg. I didn't make that "base" shot of City Hall from a demo recorder, but from an online jpeg. We're in a hurry, y'know.

"...assuming your source materials are not affected by their own artifacts...."

Exactly! You can see the base "layers" back on page three. The artifacts are already there. I immediately converted 'em to bmps for my own processing, but the damage was done before I even started.

Even if I did get a demoreord shot of Atlas Park, the Statesman image and the crowd are still jpegs, complete with artifacting. Some elements, like the flag and the flyers, I could fix by upgunning the whole image's resolution, but there's not a lot of point, is there?

Sorry, folks. I did mention I'm not an artist, just a guy futzing around with apps. We'll just have to run with it, and it's still pretty good, I think.

Heh!

Yup yup, 16 by 12 would do it! Heck, my whole screen's only 14 by 9.

Okay, if anyone took the trouble to make a high-rez demo record image of City Hall (Hmm... that's the old City Hall, ennit?) I'd certainly take the trouble to redo the image. If I had the "ingredients," cooking the image up again would be easy work, and it would look nicer.

We'd also need a high rez version of that crowd. Gotta be one somewhere, I'd think.

Either way, I... honestly don't see it as that big an issue. The site as it stands works, don't need to make a career out of it.

Is there a version of the map still in the game that doesn't have the statue? Or is it require some pigg-hacking job?

That...is a real good question.  I'm not sure.

There is no official version of the Atlas map that doesn't have the statue. I did hack something together the other day: https://twitter.com/leandrotlz/status/278088935102619648/photo/1 but it'll only render without the statue for people who have my modified files.

Email me with what you want to do and I'll see what I can do. I'm kind of juggling a lot of things today so I haven't been watching this thread. leandrotlz@gmail.com

I just want to put in that I am deeply grateful to you guys who are putting in all this work.

Also grateful to kalynnda13 for getting the idea of contacting Colbert

And to Vasarto for giving us the nail we needed to hang a Colbert Campaign on: the fact that he and his buds had a Colbert SuperNation SG in the first place.  Without that, we'd just be one more fringe group trying to get Colbert's attention without having anything specific to tie Colbert to our cause in the first place.

It has been brought to my attention that my communication skills are sorely lacking. I have done my best to do what is right here in the forum and in PM and apparently either things are being read into what I am typing on a screen or I am just a very poor communicator. I think some of both and perhaps more of the latter.

I'm getting the server setup for a secondary admin login to this specific website and I'll be happy to help along whoever would like to take over. I think I have become more of a hindrance than a benefit at this point and this is much more important than one goofball behind a keyboard like me. Keep up the great work and let me know who would like to take up the updates. It is a VERY simple to use interface - it is all web based - you need no software - and you'll find out how the 'big boys' churn out about 20% of their small-steady-income sites so fast ;)

Take care,
Manny

Did I miss something? I think you've done a great job, Mandrake.

Basically, unless V.V. has some other ideas, we're done, aren't we? I mean... what else is there to do? We have a great site up. Mission accomplished. Look, we have a great writer (V.V.,) a darn good artist (Vy,) a web designer (Mandrake,) and me, uh... chief cheerleader. Let's move on to some new project.

Matter of fact, I think should could tidy up here. Vy and I have already deleted the old versions of our work. I suggest we restart the thread.

Well everything is all set here. It looked like there were some other image updates coming down the tubes or something. Just PM me guys if you have anything that needs touched up. Like do we want me to turn back the fireball image to the one without them? Etc.... Somebody gimme the scoop and I'll take care of it and then let it ride.

I would seriously like someone to contact me that is interested in maintaining the website however. I should not be the only one holding the keys - this has shown me that there should never be the possibility of no-one having access. I hadn't thought about it.

Hmm... how 'bout Lily Barclay? I think we addresses her concerns about staying blueside and PC enough that she'd be comfy, and she has the qualifications.

I second the motion, if she is willing.

When we know whether or not we are going to get Colbert, (or after we have him and we need to move on), we will need to scrub the site for something less jingoistic anyway.

I would vote in that case for it to be something similar, but less inflammatory, and a click-link repository for peoples' pics, vids, and stories about all the heroes NCSoft has destroyed.

Sounds like a good use of our resources. Titan can be our little niche to hang out and discuss, while that site evolves into the public face of SaveCoH.

Since the site will exist in the long term, and if y'all are happy with the "before" pic as a main welcome screen, we can accumulate what I need to do the hi-rez version in a leisurely way.

Again, I'm impressed that we were able to get so many terrific people to step up to the plate and create this in short order. What else are we capable of, I wonder....

And hey, Leandro. If you can cook up a hi-rez version of the City Hall pic I've been using, and the crowd image... ones without all those jaggies and jpeg artifacts, that'd be great. Doesn't need to be a perfect match, but something close. There's no hurry, as what I have should be fine for the Colbert effort.

Ak. I haven't kept up with this thread for the last 7 pages or so since it was starting to upset me. I'll look back and get caught up, and let you guys know. I'd like to help with any efforts to save our game I can. I am still a full time student that has a full time job and family, though, and don't have a whole heck of a lot of time to maintain something at least until I graduate in a few months. I imagine, it wouldn't take a whole lot, though. As for the page eventually becoming the face of the save movement, I think we already have that with Leandro's page, don't we? I'm sure it could be something, though.

I had more in line for it to become a sort of digital archive of links to representative videos, characters, and player stories.  Kind of a combination of showcase of talents and testimonials all in one place, easy for media to surf through.

Do we have screenshots of the base that could be used? Maybe even just a SG flag with a big "C" on it?

I will certainly check it out when I have the time. I'm not making any promises as I really don't know if I will game the time to maintain a site unless it will remain a pretty static thing.

But yes, I will look everything over again and see how I feel about it. Not trying to dissuade anyone else from anything, I just have to feel comfortable with it if I'm going to be involved, and I need to make sure I have the time to do it justice. My web design skills are not leet or anything. I know some html and css, but that's it. Nothing fancy. Enough that I have a decent looking web portfolio.

There is, as long as you didn't delete your CoX client files.  Thank the MIGHTY Codewalker

http://repo.cohtitan.com/icon/icon.exe (http://repo.cohtitan.com/icon/icon.exe)

Wow. Just wow.

Anyway. Someone mentioned Colbert's "Tek Jansen" character a little bit back, so I took the liberty of recreating him in Icon. It might be improved - reference material for his costume is a little... varying, so someone with a better sense of fashion than me would probably do a better job of it. I doubt having a replica of him would hurt - heck, if someone has good-looking demo of a Dual Pistols blaster in action, maybe they can even insert him and record it?

Just throwing out ideas.

Ok so yeah, after looking at the page, I feel much better about it now. Nice return to sanity, y'all.  ;D I still don't want to work on it during the Colbert thing just because I still have no clue as to what would appeal to him. (Which is kind of a shame because it sounds like if I had cable, I'd really like the show) I don't want to mess up our chances by designing it wrong. I can change it/ maintain it after if you want though. I'm hoping the site isn't all wysiwyg, and there's somewhere I can code it if I need to, but that's not like mega important or anything.

So yeah, nice site. I can help maintain it if you want.

Also, I saw some concerns about jpeg artifacting... Photoshop has some decent filters to help remove jpeg artifacts. Another tip, if you are saving the image as a jpeg over and over as you work, you will make the artifacts worse and worse. It's better to work with it as a psd file or if you are not using Photoshop, save it as an uncompressed tif as you are working with it, then convert it to jpeg after.

I haven't dug to look into whatever this brouha is about, but I don't think your communication skills are lacking.  It's challenging to write about something one cares about passionately, even especially difficult perhaps to "put it out there" to others who feel equally passionate.   (One  thing the forums demonstrate is a vast range of emotional reactions to CoH Sunset.)  From one goofball behind a keyboard to another, I wish you the very best, Manny.
Take care,

He was indeed hilarious, though.  Not sure who he is - if he's like a comedian or something, I'd check out his shows.

However, I was (and still am) advocating showing evil Kim Taek-Jin smashing our home, and that's what we seem to have now - thought the current pic is a bit busy/crowded, but that's being looked into by various people here.  And yes, he's the CEO, which is certainly a public figure, so he doesn't get to object.

I think that just removing the fireballs would probably do it. I like the idea but is is too much to see the 'bigger picture'. I know that when switching frames like this is setup, your eyes zero in - first to center - then to focal object. With so many perfectly designed / high resolution objects all around - there is no time to take in the overall picture.

Whatever the end picture is - I think it would be better to have the focus be on Kim (and what/whoever immediately surrounding him), destroyed City Hall, and anything else should be subtle. Like the fallen Statesman is a good addition that is a 'secondary glance' addition. Your eyes would go there *after* looking at the larger and more pronounced 'top of image' scene, and it adds to the information.

Just some thoughts anyway...

EDIT: Anyone have any feedback on the time between switching? I tried various ones. Enough time to read the header before 'clicking here' and it still switch so people will see it, but long enough for people to actually see the images. Want it to be longer? Shorter?

*Any* input on the website itself is welcome. Trust me, you won't hurt my feelings. I've had people simply cancel their contract on me before, only to have someone else buy up the same site thinking it was the greatest thing since php. :)

Upon some reflection, there's one thing I think we really need to add to the final picture, just so that it's unambiguous - a tag or label on Kim that reads "NCSoft CEO Kim Taek-Jin".  This should ensure that people don't think he's just some random guy.

Clearly identifying our enemy would be a good thing, I should think.

We didn't get a Colbert Bump this year for Christmas, but if they chose to have a Nun who is brave enough to stand up to the Pope instead, I'm okay with that.

New shows start in January, we can always make another run at it.  In the meanwhile there's still lots to do and letters to write.

Thanks to everyone for your hard work and I hope we can find more places to target with your talents!

Not at all, your webpage was never even finished. Just like you don't judge a game by its alpha, you don't judge a website in progress. I'm just saying that in its current state, it wouldn't be worth sending to anyone. We'd want a complete, professional looking website, or close to it. I'm not saying you're incapable of doing that, I'm saying that the current temporary page doesn't meet that standard.

Well if we are starting anew so to speak... My swift brain just put that all together - then we can do anything.
This was a VERY fast throw together. Main focus was just color code for theme and task, block it out for info flow. Nothing fancy.

I'll come up with some better options for you guys in a password protected area, we can develop the ideas and see what we get. Publish it, get feedback, swap back and forth, etc. Everything is very modular so no worries.

My weekends are Sunday / Monday so just keep the ideas coming and I'll work on a good layout this weekend. I'll PM you guys with the pw.

The smoldering ruins of Atlas Park.  On the steps of city hall, Statesman lies defeated and bloodied.

Above him, hovers the victorious Taek Jin Kim, in full villain regalia.  His costume is that of a self-styled conqueror, overcompensating for something.  His costume bears the distinctive purple-blue and gold of the NCSoft logo.  I will Photoshop the actual logo onto his chest.

Behind them, in the arms-up-in-the-air throes of the /grief emote, is Stephen Colbert in an immediately identifiable ultra-patriotic superhero costume.

In the case of both, I can easily Photoshop the appropriate faces.  There's a perfect image of Colbert being sad that I've downloaded, and a particularly greasy smug photo of Kim I've got, too.

I just lack the technical skills to actually put together the demofile to make this happen.  I sent Leandro an email, but he's asleep in his part of the world.

Below are my proposed costumes for Kim and Colbert:

Thoughts?

Just another idea altogether, how about polishing off the Tek Jansen costume and then put together a couple minute demo video featuring him in a pseudo CoH world, encountering the NCsoft demon. It'd be somewhere between a fanfic and an informative piece.

Seems to me like that might provide some extra grabbing power than the 'Colbert nation' reference.

Hare to nitpick good stuff, but are the blues super saturated to anyone else? Just in the costumes? Kim looks like he's wearing a dress because his skirty thing blends with the cape. It's funny, but it takes away some of the menace. The faces are great, though.

The name of the animation for demorecords is MEGA. It's one of the first frames. Character looks at one arm, then the other, then blasts a huge something forward.

It's because of the red sky I used. Different skies mess with different colors. Here's the original image, exactly like the COH client rendered it (http://i.imgur.com/WXzuk.jpg).

Sorry it took so long.  Did the shading as suggested.  Gave the text a little gradient to make it pop a little more.  Adjusted the Colbert logo to be red-white-blue without the eagle, it was being annoying.

Might not want the leggings to be the same color as the cape he's got in front. Even knowing that those were in the game, at first I thought that he was glitched and I was seeing the cape behind him THROUGH his thighs.

We're over the holiday bubble, the fiscal cliff is old news, and this is a good time to start trying to get a Colbert bump.

Let's stick to trying to get his attention.  If we get it, send him to Rae, who is our official journalist.

These are dark times in Paragon City. Only Stephen can save us now! We need the Colbert Bump to restore freedom after the dreaded Imperialist corporation NCSoft shut down an extremely popular, quite profitable, online multiplayer game, played by TRILLIONS of members of the Colbert Nation. I wouldn't say "nothing" but no, the show did not feel it was something they could use apparently.  We proved we have the enthusiasm, and given a decent catalyst, nothing says we can't try again.  Maybe when summer hits and the Super Hero movies are in the news, it would be topical but that is the main thing we need to get his writers to do something, it would have to be topical.
