They could use lockboxes as a means to communicate that your monthly subscription payment is due.

You find a lockbox.  You open it.  You're redirected to the payment site.

Community service Lockbox.

Requires player to participate in lower level quest/mission/event to unlock said box.
or
Pay for key.

I like this idea. "Do the Positron TF" in order to obtain a key to unlock this box. :D

You notice a lockbox in your inventory.
You get the key without too much trouble or expense.
You open the lockbox.
It's a one time only gender changer.
Now you're seductive super villainess is a guy.
Thanks loafs NCSoft.
Well gotta blame somebody.

And why not?
Although TBH I'd rather see no explicit lockboxes, just plot coupons - want that upgrade or costume part, then complete the story arc. :p
We were heroes. We were villains. At the end of the world we all fought as one. It's what we did that defines us.
The end occurred pretty much as we predicted: all servers redlining until midnight... and then no servers to go around.

Somewhere beyond time and space, if you look hard you might find a flash of silver trailing crimson: a lone lost Spartan on his way home.

Lockboxes are cheap and nasty trash - gambling has no place in an MMO.

Bit of a "necro" (according to the warning that comes up when I click "Reply"), but I disagree that gambling has no place in an MMO. real gambling has no place in an MMO. I have no problem with things like the Darkmoone Faire in that one game with all the people who play it. Games of chance are a fun diversion, but don't make me pay real money for something like that.
I wouldn't use the word "replace," but there's no word for "take over for you and make everything better almost immediately," so we just say "replace."

With the auction house, lockboxes could be interesting.
Since one could either put the box up or open it and put the contents up.

I remember people gifting me junk, before the auction place.
Not so much after.

I loved the super packs... I just used my monthly stipend or any other spare points I had from purchases for them. I never actually bought points to get super packs. I find everything in the super packs either useful...or something I could sell.
