Title: Valiance Online
Post by: Safehouse on December 22, 2014, 05:15:59 PM
Ouch, that's even more messed up than I had assumed.  I just did a quick check on Steam's Community page, and the Dev's for the game have posted an info questionnaire there to get data from users having problems so they can isolate the cause(s) and get the game up and running for you.  I'm sure the official game page at the Dev's site will have one as well in their game forums.

And on the CoH side of things, I'm waiting patiently for the negotiations with NCSoft to conclude (hopefully on a positive note), so we can all get back to the old neighborhood.  In the meantime, I've tried out Valiance Online this week after the open Alpha test was announced.  I showed it to a RL friend of mine who also played CoH in the past, and he remarked on how similarly VO's initial area represented Atlas Park's layout.  Yep, there's the AE Building, Vanguard Building, Hospital, and even the cross-town tunnel... and look, goons to beat on hiding under the overpasses!  Grin!!!

I dunno if you can share (there might be privacy rules with the alpha and whatnot), but how does it play overall? Did you get to try out any of the powersets, or was it more of a "wander around and see what's up?" I'm very curious about how put together it is right now, and at the moment I'm not sure I can access the alpha myself, haha.

Didn't have to sign an NDA in blood or anything... so I assume they want us talking about their successor game.

Right now they're testing basic character types, and I chose a controller type with Ice and Healing powers... you gain XP while using the powers, not just by taking down the Hellion-class enemies.  I had fun with it, and within a couple of hours of gameplay had 7 powers in each powerset to try out... and there may be more, just haven't gotten to em yet.  Oh, yeah and you can fly from level 1 as well.

Give it a try, you may start having some flashbacks...

Here's the pre-alpha info page:

Can you explain this in more detail, please?

While you're using your powers in combat against the targets, you gain XP... when you reach a certain XP level, you gain access to a new power automatically.  The target kills count for mission completion, but I didn't notice any XP for taking them down yet.  Of course, I assume all of this is the pre-alpha setup, and not the final game configuration.

What actually happens is when you take an enemy down, the game looks at the powers you used to take him down and assign exp accordingly.  So if say your using healing energy during the fight you will get healing energy exp when he dies.  A good example is to win a fight using exclusively energy blast, for instance, you'll get more exp for energy blast but none for your secondary(which would have to be healing energy at this point I think).

To maximize exp in the current system you want to use powers from both powersets however as you get less total exp if you win a battle using just one powerset.

Post by: Sugoi on December 22, 2014, 11:00:29 PM
Looking in the chat window, I was seeing the XP being assigned during combat results while using the powers, not after the target is taken down, unless they've changed the procedure in the last couple of days.

Ah, just logged back in for a quick fight.. and they did change the routine for XP assignment, as LaughingAlex described above.  Sorry on giving the outdated info.  Guess we should expect rapid changes during testing.  Grin!

I trust this was in an attempt to KO power leveling and farming?

heh I had the same idea, but mine worked out a bit differently I saw the flaw of not allowing players to choose the next attack they get. So my system turned into a completely different animal. I don't want to say too much because I have yet to fully program that animal but it's no savage beast, more like 101 dalmatians. As in it wont be a hard to wrestle it into submission, it will just be tedious. For now however, I must finish the character bases..

Well, it is in testing mode right now, so I wouldn't consider how they're doing things currently as the final configuration.  And as LaughingAlex noted, they've made some changes from the routines I noted within the last couple of days.

This is really, really early yet. Ask questions in game and in forum there. There is usually a dev in game and their pretty good at answering question if they have an answer and I'll almost guarantee they've got paper and a pen handy for suggestions. These folks really want to make a game that they like and almost as important, that WE like. I'm Dr Nice Guy and I approve this message.

Oh boy, that sounds so reminiscent of CoH. I'll try to get it up and running pretty soon - been swamped with work and writing the second draft of my book so I haven't had the chance to get on and start piddling about with things.

So I checked it out last night, and it was pretty fun! Of course, as is to be expected, it's very alpha-y, but I was pleasantly surprised at how in depth the character creator was already. Even got to try out Safehouse's old energy powers a little bit.

I can't wait to see what the finished product will be like!
Title: Re: Valiance Online
Post by: ValianceOnline on December 24, 2014, 07:37:36 PM
It's very pre-alpha-y right now actually. :)

There is no NDA so feel free to discuss, share screenshots/videos, etc.

Our current testing area does feel like our old home but it is a small fraction of the map to come. More details are being released soon.

In general, lots of things are very basic right now but we have about a year of development ahead of us... and some things are not "ready for prime time" and you aren't seeing the latest in-game yet.

This week will be a patch that includes new character models and changes to the animation system as well as bug fixes, a mission NPC, waypoint fixes and other updates.

Coming weeks will also see character generator 2.0, a new leveling system, and more power sets, mobs, visual effects, missions, sewers (deeper levels) and a BOSS.

This is only the beginning, a lot more is on the way!

Let us know any questions or feedback you have, it is much appreciated!

Thanks also to the Titan folks for setting up the Plan Z forum. :)

Also, to celebrate the holidays, this will be happening...

I've been quiet on these forums here for a long time. I have to say the team on this project are some of the most interactive with the players I've ever been a part of. Not to mention they don't just respond but actually listen and really take player input seriously. It shows in the end results as they happen.

I am really intent on that Greenlight over at Steam succeeding! I want to see these guys take off with even greater gusto (which would be absolutely amazing considering the pace at which they are going already!). Just from what I've experienced so far, it is in the bag for a familiar, fun, but nicely different world in so many cool ways!

If you haven't logged in and tried it yet, you've gotta give it a whirl. Made my wife and I get all misty eyed street sweeping, running missions, and hitting the sewers! In fact just flying up a bit and looking around at first login was a pretty speechless moment let me tell you... just wow! I can't wait to watch as everything gets implemented over time.

Oh yeah, Merry Christmas / Happy Holidays / Have a great day everyone! :D

I'm really enjoying the game.  More so now with the addition of "quasi-flight".

For those that haven't played, right now flying involves three steps:

1) Rising -- you can only rise if you have no forward motion.
2) Flying -- think of this is straight and level flight.
3) Falling -- you can only reduce your altitude if you have no forward motion.

It's cumbersome at first but it beats running around the map.

I'm sure we'll soon have true flight.

Would love to join you in playing around in Valiance.  But, I've got an issue that nobody seems to be addressing.  I've posted about it multiple times both here and at the Valiance site, and not received one helpful reply.

I can log on, and create a character.  That's great!  However, whenever I try to enter the city... crash and burn.  EVERY.  TIME.  I've never even seen that screen load.  I get the "loading" screen for a few minutes and then *poof* the window closes and that's it.

I *think* my video setting may be set higher than my PC can handle, but I see no way to change them in game, or at least in the small sliver of the game I can get to run.  Or, if that's not the issue... what is the problem?

Dunno.  This seems like a MAJOR issue that needs resolved.  I know I'm just one person, but if the game won't even load for me... how many more people are going to have this issue moving forward?

...

I've seen several people post this same and similar issues and it has been discussed (therefore attempting to be addressed) on several occasions as to what could possibly be the issue. Seeing as how there are nearly an infinite number of hardware configurations out there - it is inevitable in the early pre-alpha stages of any development that some of them just aren't compatible yet.

EDIT: I say discussed in the sense that Developers have joined in on the conversation in the threads I've read and asked for specs, logs, and done their best to help out regardless of the outcome. Nobody is being ignored that I can tell was my point here.

I would recommend a little patience and read through the forums over there some more as there are several threads pertaining to your issue. Some people have had luck getting things to work, others have not. I think it is just a matter of the fact it is so early in development it is simply not going to work for everyone. Several people have mentioned it works great on one of their PCs but not another, sometimes on their lower end system and not their latest greatest. Myself it runs fantastic on my self-built PC, my Win8 laptop, and my Wife's PC, but it does not run well on my slightly older machine I use as a server. Understandable, but it did run CoH and LOTRO without any issues.

I agree it needs to be resolved, but I think it is low on the totem-pole. In my mind, they need a large pool of compatibility at the outset - which they have - and then really focus on development of the game itself to at least the point of Alpha, but more likely Beta before delving into compatibility again.

Just my 2 cents though - I don't represent them in any way!

Yeah hurple , I had the same issue, But after the new patch i wiped the old one and never downloaded the new patch. So i guess will ask for the spec's of the game and see if it is my video card, if that an't it , I don't then what i will do. But it's funny i have and had no trouble CO,DCOL,CofH Oh yeah i do have zone alarm now (fire wall) so that might be a issue as well, But i always click allow, So if that an't it i don't know, I guess I'll set on the side line's and watch.

NOOOOO! We don't want the team to pass out from exhaustion!

I haven't played in the game much but from what I did play. It had the CoH feel to it for sure, there was a dev given out advice as to where to hunt mobs, ect...

The only thing I had a problem with. Is I couldn't figure out what choices to make if I wanted to play an MM style character. Which I was half asleep when I was playing so that could of been it. LOL!

If you are having issues with the game please visit our Tech Support forum - http://valiance.shogn.net/forum/53-tech-support

However, if you are crashing at some point after login or character select, we have added a Settings buttons to those screens so you can turn down the graphics in case that is the issue.

Specifically, you should turn graphics down to "Fastest" and shut off "Experimental Optimizations" and "Auto-Adjust Quality Level".

If you are then able to get in game you can raise the graphics quality and see what works.

This is, of course, pre-alpha so there will be issues with different hardware and we'll be making adjustments and optimizations along the way. Your help, and your patience, are appreciated! :)

I am quite stunned by the work that's been done. Frankly, I'm far more excited by seeing actual in-engine stuff rather than the hopes and prayers of City of Titans (no offense to those guys, but it's been 2 years now, come on...).

I noticed that your world looks almost exactly like Atlas Park, up to and including distant 'war wall' like barriers. While I appreciate this, it does seem a bit much to make it seem so closely the same don't you think?

Otherwise amazing job so far!

Just want to point out that the engine for VO has been in development for seven-ish years so keep that in perspective.

(Not saying that VO's not impressive; just saying that two years for an MMO is a pittance. City of Heroes was in development for nearly four before it started less-closed testing.)

Open pre-alpha testing information here:

http://valiance.shogn.net/game/news/article/35-open-pre-alpha-testing

If you have a client from last year it will not work and you should remove everything and download and install the new one.

The client now auto-updates so you shouldn't have to do that again...

The Settings button is now available at the Login and Character Select screens so you can change the graphics settings in case that is what is keeping you from getting in-game (you should turn graphics down to "Fastest" and shut off "Experimental Optimizations" and "Auto-Adjust Quality Level").

Right now, Windows is our primary development platform while we're in pre-alpha but when we patch we will also release an updated Mac client as soon as possible. Trying to get a Linux client built but having some issues with Unity. There are instructions for playing in Linux on our forums though:

http://valiance.shogn.net/forum/9-news-blogs/3849-i-got-it-working-in-linux

Next patch is going to have the new animation system and character models we've been working on, will have more news on that soon.

I think Valiance the underdog .. by having a year headstart on testing will be the darkhorse that wins it all.

Not being in that city is starting to feel as bad as not being in Atlas.

Yes.. it's me .. VO :) Potter! :)

We've updated to a new, new map and updated character models and animations. We're also in the process of preparing to (re)implement missions and add many more powers and costume pieces along with many other improvements on the road to Steam. :)

I wish I had given my money to valiance online or AP Revival. With no where near the funding or staff they seem to somehow be running circles around CoT. I appreciate the fact that these two projects are focused on rolling up their sleeves and building their respective games... Instead of posting updates that always seem to come from the composition department with stories that are intended to occupy our time and anxiety. So really, with the most funding and staff how is it possible that they have the least to show for it?

(Edit): keep up the great work guys! We all appreciate it!

Keep in mind that the engine VO is built on took seven years to develop to the point it was at when they replaced the old content with superheroes. So, yeah, of course they're going to be running circles around CoT.

The previous areas were testing zones. The current one, with a lot of additions over time, will be our new starter area... and yes we had to wipe unfortunately due to all the changes made to the animation system. :gonk:

Yay!  I finally got logged in and got to walk around the city.  Before, it would always crash as the city loaded.

So, anyway, I get in walk around, find a few enemies standing around and start attacking... And another player flies in and kills them all with one attack and flies away.

Pre-Alpha and already kill-stealers!  LMAO!

I downloaded the launcher a couple of days ago, and have been trying to get it going. It starts updating, but, at about 32% of the way done, I get this message where the red progress bar was:

Checksum invalid for http://192.187.108.146/xampp/content/Data/LauncherPayloads/WindowsPlayer/Valiance_Launcher_32bit_Data/sharedassets0.assets.0012.dat.

Is this being worked on? I was last in before it went open pre-alpha, and I'd reeeealy like to see it again.

Some time after I posted this, I found that my laptop seemed to be able to download the updates okay (more or less), while my desktop computer had the above problem. So, I learned to let my laptop download it, and I copied the folder to the desktop. But now, neither computer will cooperate.

To clarify: when it displays this message, it sometimes ends in /sharedassets0.assets.[4-digit number].dat, and sometimes, it's /resources.assets.[4-digit number].dat. The 4-digit number, at the end, changes with each try of the same download, and the 'sharedassets0' and 'resources' part will switch occasionally, but the number of files, and total size, to be downloaded doesn't. I tried removing the target folder and letting it re-create it, but that didn't work, either. Help?

(I'm using Vista on the desktop, and Win7 on the laptop. Both used to be able to download the updates okay, before the desktop became recalcitrant, so I don't think that the OS is the problem. And my VO zipfile is dated 1/27/15.)

You can form weapon constructs to aid yourself in battle, diversity is the key and you can create the right weapon for the job at a second's notice. Mimetic Weaponry attacks are as varied in effect as they are in appearance, giving you a great deal of utility.

It's not in the icon pic, but we'll have this kind of melee as an option too...

I'm not in a position to download VO for a little while yet. The images I've seen of the characters, the legs are all impossibly long. For instance, the example dude from the previous post has legs that are nearly 1.5x the length of his torso (including head). That's so outside the scope of human growth as to look bad. Is it possible to reduce the legs to something that is more standard? People are generally about seven heads tall (using their own head for measuring, as heads come in different sizes - e.g. taller people also have bigger heads!). That dude is about 8.5-9 heads tall.
Title: Re: Valiance Online
Post by: Blondeshell on September 02, 2015, 02:01:31 AM
It might be that the head itself is scaled too small. Everything else about the body seems fairly well-proportioned to itself. I also have not downloaded VO to see it in action, so these are just my comments from the screenshots. Screenshots show great promise, though. :)

Just because it's common doesn't mean it's good (personal opinion). All of my regular characters in City were at minimum leg length and 1/2 to 3/4 "weight" - aka believable human physique. (I had several that didn't fit "believable", but it was on purpose and not just a 'style' choice).

My personal pet peeve about the female bodies was that the MINIMUM cup size was like a C, and the maximum was just porn-star ridiculous. If I wanted a tall, skinny female character, the minimum chest size seemed too far out of proportion.

Much agreed.

Also much agreed.

Somewhat along those lines, please consider a 'modesty' setting for female outfits. I knew lot's of women/mothers/wives that liked City of Heroes, but wouldn't play it (or let their kids play it), because you couldn't turn the hooch off... Just a generic head-toe canvas bag would do for starters!

Funny you should ask [about having created a tear in the agile-space-time continuum]...
So that's why my user stories have been so achy! I've alerted my boss about the catastrophe, and explained that it will delay some of my work.

I've tried downloading it several times, and haven't been able to get the whole 11.8MB that Firefox says is the file size. The download keeps cutting off, and WinRAR won't extract what part I do get, which tends to be about 4MB, more or less; on one attempt, only a little over 1MB came through. Is anyone else experiencing this?

Is it possible to do the missions that we get from contacts, or are we just testing mission-dispensing? I haven't been able to figure out where the fence is that I'm supposed to take down, or the guard station where I'm supposed to do it. It's Henry Glasser's mission; I'm assuming that the building he works at is the one he's standing near, since he'd be interested in getting back to work once I'm done.

All current and most of the previous mmos including coh have this functionality so it wouldn't make sense for them not to have this as an option. In fact you can completely bind every movement and ability to whatever keys you want in most cases even print screen (although I'm not going to recommend doing that for obvious reasons). And wow... you actually want to use arrow keys to look around?

The Server Awakens! 8)

Patch notes, download link, new website testing and more information can be found at the link below!

https://valianceonline.wordpress.com/2015/12/25/the-server-awakens/

Some additional notes...

If having install errors, then clean out everything (including the launcher shortcut and unzipped install files) and try again. Most important, delete the folder at c:\WindowsPlayer (unless you put it elsewhere).

We're aware of and working on three major bugs: blackout/darkness zones; no health regen; chatting but movement keys still function. Stay tuned!

We are doing our best to reply to social media posts and support emails but it's a holiday weekend so please be patient. The game was ready for testing and we figured people didn't want to wait until Monday. Thanks for your support and Happy Holidays!

Congrats on getting that new server up and running.  :)

Thank you. The move took some doing but now we can focus on development again... well, not like we didn't stop during the move... or Thanksgiving... or Christmas... or... well, you get the gist. Chaining the developers to their desks really paid off! ;)

I wanted to let you know that I tried out your pre-alpha on my trusty, aged laptop and was definitely impressed at what you guys have gotten together, as well as how well the client ran on said laptop. It's an old ASUS lappy from 2008 with a Geforce GTX 260M graphics card and a Core 2 Duo 2.53 Ghz processor, and I was getting 25-30 FPS in 1440x900 full screen with minimum graphics options enabled. So, kudos! I'm looking forward to where your project goes from here.

I'd forgotten how time consuming it can be to run back to a trainer to get a new power.

I've got to give props to the Valiance Online team.  I tried the alpha a year ago and... well, it was very much alpha.  Felt like a beginning 3DMax or Blender project. (No offense, I have zero skills when it comes to 3D animation/authoring games, I couldn't even get that far.)

I tried it this morning, and how far you've come since then... I didn't have to avoid parts of the map out of fear of falling through the floor and TPing back to a origin point.  All of the graphics weren't a shade of red or cyan, there was actual color.  The player customization options have increased quite a bit.  Animations aren't wonky versions of walking.  There's a dialog system being worked on.

I have to admit, I didn't have a whole lot of faith in the project at the start, but Valiance Online is improving quite a bit.

You have my Respek Knuckles.

How do I get there? For some time, since well before Tahquitz's post to now, I've been running around the same small plot of land, with an intersection with blue force fields where you can, most definitely, fall through, and a row of people near the respawn point: Advancement Trainer, Enhancement Vendor, Marcus Clark, Joyce Abbott, Herbert Abbott, Robert Abbott, Fire Cmdr. Swanson, and Meat Magician (from left to right, facing them as you look south). Is there more, that my updater has been overlooking? (Yes, I'm using the 8.0 launcher.)

Um, never mind. Just now, I tried making a second toon, which ended up on an actual city map. So I've now deleted, and re-made, the toon who was trapped on the little floating city-map island.

AFAIK, the pre-alpha is done and the servers are shut down until the alpha launches. They've been giving semi-regular updates, but they're all "Alpha will begin soon but we can't give an exact timeframe."

Hi.  Can you track donations from last 3 years ?  Can you even apply rewards to accounts donated in the last week or return emails?

We've tracked everyone who has donated either through Kickstarter (regardless of the fact it didn't reach goal) and on our website and when the (initially private) Alpha launches, everyone who has donated will get access and whatever rewards are available at that point.

Regarding emails, do you mean you emailed support@valianceonline.com about your donations and didn't get an answer?
