Title: 12th Anniversary of City of Heroes
Post by: Tahquitz on April 02, 2016, 09:03:22 PM
So, Thursday, April 28th, 2016.

We have this awesome Paragon Chat tool thingy now.  For those unable or unwilling to install it (work firewalls, etc.) there's phone apps to plug in to PChat (AstraChat for Android and Monal for iOS come to mind).  I am active on Champions Online, so when I'm home from work (4pm-10pm PDT) I'm willing to be a go-between to get people from that City Hall to our City Hall that day (if Tequila/Island Rum is overloaded, then at least on mobile).

The question: we're all well versed on post-shutdown malaise, so a massive gathering isn't likely, but a gathering is still possible. What work needs to be done to get feet on the floor?

Ideas:

We have the shutdown anniversary later this year to get all sad and rememberancy.  How about something fun?

Edit: Corrected the date from the April 27th date I got from Wikipedia. Thanks Felderburg!

Hide and Seek hosts (A team of players hide throughout the city, offering clues in lore to test what you remember or how well you can search Paragon Wiki while playing :P, winners and winning times get recognized in these forums), we did this on Triumph, it was a pain in the neck to script out and to get people to stay put if they're a "cluegiver", but there's enough lead time to make this work

I'd be down to help make this throughout this week.

It does sound like fun.  If you need help with player activities, I'd be glad to give a hand.   :)

Steelhelm: Sent a PM.  (It is a Scavenger Hunt, after all. :D)

Nyghtshade: Sounds good.  What would you like to do?  (Or do you have an idea you want to be in charge of that's not on this list?)

I want to wage interest in pulling this off, and if there is sufficient support to run it, we'll announce next week of the event being official with an event schedule accompanying it.  I can commit to being here 12pm noon until 8pm PDT, I'll find a break sometime for food in-between.  If European players want to extend the schedule and run an event while us Yankees are asleep, I'm open to that.

If there's only a handful of people, we can scale it down to be smaller if needed, as I'm sure people will be there that night anyway, whether it's less than or close to 100 or halfway to/closer to 1,000 is what is unknown.  (Being realistic, we're not going to get huge numbers like the participation we had the year after the shutdown.  1,000 may be too optimistic on my part.)

Other event ideas:

For volunteers, I'll put out the call for people interested in helping us later this week (in specific quantities needed).  We need an idea of what we're going to do with the Hide & Seek/Scavenger Hunt first, Costume Contest ideas for themes, and RP Groups interested in recruiting on that day, so if any of that sounds like your cup of tea feel free to reply. I'll be here all week.

Whipped this up this afternoon... AP33R3S? Atlas Park 33 Revelry, Remembrance, and Reunion Society.  (And I like weird acronyms.)

Nyghtshade: Sounds good.  What would you like to do?  (Or do you have an idea you want to be in charge of that's not on this list?)

I'd be fine with being one of the stationary characters to give clues during the hide-and-seek scavanger hunt.  When our SG's used to run those, we wore our SG colors (distinctive from the general crowd) to make it easier for the participants to tell us from the rest of the crowd.  Is there anything we'd like to do that would make us identifiable that way - even if it's just to stand there holding a torch?

Also, for a few years our SG would hold City of Heroes Trivia contests during our annual server-wide Autumn event, ECHO.  I still have the scripts for those, both questions and answers.  Running the contest in 10-15 minute rounds through the evening, with participants sending tells to the judges for the answers seemed to work pretty well, and then announcing the answers with a winner for each round.   If the questions/answers scripts would be of any use to you, send me a message with your email address, and I'll forward them to you.

Do you plan to ask Cape Radio to cover this event with music and talk about the activities as the evening proceeds?  If so, you might want to contact TheCapeRadio pretty soon, as they do have a lead-time for scheduling events.   http://www.thecaperadio.com/ (http://www.thecaperadio.com/)

I love the artwork you came up with for the event, by the way!

The Cape Radio: I sent them a PM in here, which probably wasn't bright on my behalf.

I'll hit up their website now, and in a moment I'll send you a PM about the details of the "Player Mission" (yeah, uh, Hide and Seek and Scavenger Hunt doesn't quite tell what it actually is... us simulating a FedEx Mission where lore clues are all you get.)

(EDIT: I've written up a proposal at The Cape Radio (nothing that hasn't been discussed here, just more narrative and less brainstorming.)  Peruse if you wish (http://www.thecaperadio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=13108&p=92733#p92733).)

I could use some help with volunteers for RP groups or RP ideas: does anyone want to recruit during the Anniversary Celebration?  Do you have any ideas on events involving RP short of running a session during the Anniversary only to be slowed down by "ZOMG, what is this?" types of tells?  Do you want to do "Theatre in the round" in Perez Park's ampitheater? Short of an open house, I don't know what else would be beneficial to them.

I love the Freedom Theme, but at the risk of sounding like a luddite, they got to have the original song in that list...

You remember it, right?  BOOM-BOOM! .... BOOM-BOOM! BOOM-BOOM! Duh duh duh, dunnnn dunnnn, Duh duh duh, dunnnn dunnnn.

Okay, fine, monosyllabic aping of music doesn't quite work on forums. This one. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qcjoOdVHR8) :P

Might be hard to do a one-off RP session with so many other activities going on.  Just a suggestion: what do folks think about setting up a location for 'virtual open bar' and reminiscing in character about best memories of Paragon / Rogue Isles?  Maybe missions, maybe side-story RP, etc?

While I unfortunately gotta work the 27th, I may try to stream on Twitch later in the day. I'm not really a streamer type but I'd certainly do it (or at least watch someone else) for City of Heroes. I just gotta get everything installed for Paragon chat which I haven't done yet.

As a side note, is there any way I could get myself or worse, Paragon Chat, into trouble by streaming it on Twitch?

Edit just noticed the 28th! DOH! still gotta work sadly

Don't feel bad!  I did the same thing announcing all of this on Wednesday April 27th (until Felderberg corrected me) and I'm the organizer! :D What does that say about me?

I don't have a decent broadband connection, so I didn't mention livestreaming: I can grab video and edit later to reupload, but I can't stream anything out of my uplink (I'm rural, so I'm on an asymmetrical 10MB download/2MB upload microwave link.  And if my ISP catches me doing "server" stuff like streaming video out, I could get cancelled.)  It still beats Satellite and Dial-Up.

My favorite streaming app when I did live in a city and could do it was FFSplit (http://www.ffsplit.com/).  It's open source, free (there's no paid tier or "trialware" junk baked into it) and it hooks into Twitch.TV or other Adobe Streaming Media style servers just fine.  At home, I direct it to save to my hard drive so I can make tutorial videos for programs (if you have multiple displays, it works really well: you can run it in a non-recorded window and keep all of your controls offscreen.)  But eight hours of video is a tall order for my hard drives (all under 1TB: I'm on SSDs) so I'm not going to use it for this event.

As for the legal ramifications, I can't speak to that.  If Paragon Chat's popularity is the sole factor that causes NCSoft/Nexon to deliver notice to Cease and Desist, then it's just a matter of time, not method.  It's been in the news for other gaming companies (http://www.gamespot.com/articles/blizzard-shuts-down-pirate-wow-server-that-doesnt-/1100-6438635/), (albeit their rationale was different: Blizzard shut down pirate WoW servers not from lost revenue and damages due to their popularity, but to protect their IP) so it's not past their ability to do so.

Stream all you want. I have good reason to believe that several people within NCSoft are at least aware of Paragon Chat's existence, so I'm not worried about somebody finding out who wouldn't otherwise know. There were numerous streams that covered the launch last July, and AFAIK none of them heard so much as a peep about it.

They probably don't see it as something big enough to spend time on (user population is in the low double digits many nights). Either that or one of their lawyers gave it a once over and saw the lengths we've gone to in order to avoid or at least minimize any potential infringement, and are not fully confident that they would prevail if it came down to a battle. Or both.

No kidding, you guys even shucked the old logo (I liked the XMPP Logo in the background of the original CoH Logo cityscape, I kept it on my PC as an .ico) for a mask in a chat bubble.

Does that work for you Botzo?

I vote for all of them.  I see nothing wrong with having a giant CC with prizes given out in Categories, as above.  Then, you could have general prizes for Most Beautiful, Most Purple....and the winners in each category could do a second round for Top Five costumes (or Top Three, or Top Ten, whatever...), with a Grand Prize at the end.  You know, like they do at dog/cat shows.  :-)

On another note, since I'm retired, I'd be willing to donate time/work to the project.  Costume contests and RP are both interests of mine.  The scavenger hunt sounds like fun, too.

Why bother with a theme, may be better for everyone competing to re-create their original character and just see what's what.

As posted in the City of Heroes board, I have a development to share.

Wiggle It.  (Just a little bit.)
We now have music.  The following DJs will be present for the event:

One Hit Wonder
12pm - 4pm Pacific / 3pm - 7pm Eastern

DJ Nexus
4pm - 7pm Pacific / 7pm - 10pm Eastern

DJ Valor
7pm - 8pm Pacific / 10pm - 11pm Eastern (with her show continuing after the remote is finished.)
Special programming note: This event will be DJ Valor's last, as she is retiring from TheCape.  She will be moving on to a new role and will not have time to continue her broadcasts.  DJ Valor has done plenty of events for us in Paragon Chat's nearly 1 year of infancy.  So come out and show her some love before she goes!

Volunteers Still Wanted
Also, we have plenty of room for Volunteers to join us to put this together.  Read the prior post for more information (above) and please send me a PM if you're interested.  I will review the first group of volunteers on Wednesday night.

Edit: I hate Photobucket. Images are now gone.

Thanks, Pogoman!  I'm on Pacific, so I missed it, but I'll listen to the recording for sure!*

Solitaire, check your PMs.

I've posted two threads for people to respond to in the next week:

Grand Marshall (http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index.php/topic,11975.0.html) - Help us appoint a Titan Network community member to be the honoree for our event this year!  Nominations accepted from now until Tuesday night, vote from Wednesday - Saturday.
Call for Help - We don't have enough volunteers for the Player Mission.  This post explains what is going to happen if we can't make the Player Mission work out.

================
* Edit: Reply to your dialog in #SaveCOH Radio -- The name is Tah-KEETS, you got it right. :D  AP33R3S is Atlas Park 33 Revelry, Remembrance, and Reunion Society - R3S being shorthand for RRRS like W3C is short hand for WWWC - World Wide Web Consortium.

And my god, you read that entire post on the air?!  I've wrote that last week, and yeah, I've learned my lesson.  I've pulled the Assemble the Team post off of the Activities thread.  I'm just asking for enough people now to help me pull off the basic stuff, the rest is crossed fingers at this point.  I shot too high.

For the "Paragon Chat is not CoH" crowd, yeah, you're right that I can't address people who won't use it at all because it's not CoH.  But I didn't want to blow off Paragon Chat and run this event on Champions because there's simply more of a game there, either.

I disagree with the view of "Paragon Chat isn't CoH" personally, because there was a significant group of people that enjoyed costume contests and SG Events like what we were putting on when the game was live, and I knew people who were tired of grinding and radio/newspaper missions who saw stuff like this as a break from the ordinary.  I'm not trying to argue the virtues and failings of what we have.  Such arguments already exist on here, and go on for miles already.  Showing up to the anniversary event doesn't mean you now suddenly accept Paragon Chat as a regular part of your weekly online regiment, nor are going to become an RP enthusiast if you're not into that.  It just means that you showed up.

My rationale is simple: Paragon Chat is enough of a husk of the original for us to meet up in.  The cost of admission for both venues (Paragon Chat and Champions Online) remains free.  So why did I side with Paragon Chat instead of Champions Online? This is the first year we've had Paragon Chat available on CoH's anniversary.  So, I figured, let's at least give it a shot.

And as you aptly called out, yes.  This is my first time running something like this.  I've been a participant when the game was live as others have organized the events, and I've used those events as a framework for this.  I've made mistakes, I know.  I can't treat people on Paragon Chat like we did in CoH.  Titan Network is extremely casual, and pushing rules and de rigueur doesn't work around here.  And next time, (That is, if I'm lucky to see a next time and next year everyone ignores me) I'll line up the volunteers before announcing anything at all.

If Paragon Dawn wants to run a event in Champions Online, they have our support.  I'm personally unable to Livestream or do too much Voice Chat as my home connection is fairly weak (8MB down, 2MB up... realistically it's 3MB on most nights.  Rural Internet, yay!)  But I'm open for other ideas linking the two events together.  If Paragon Dawn's group isn't on Titan Network, if you (Pogoman) can relay me an email address I can reach them at in PM, we can discuss further.  I'm not looking to compete against them for attendance, but I don't want to ignore them either: in later years when Plan Z projects like City of Titans, Heroes & Villains, Valiance, APR, etc. go beta, we can branch out further.

Edit 2:
I have since met with Paragon Dawn.  We've touched base, and will cross-promote for the Anniversary Celebration.  There will be a meetup in Champions Online at Millennium City Hall (next to the Globe statue INSIDE the City Hall building) on April 28th.  Details TBA.

Edit 3: Same volunteer roster now than when I started.  We'll figure it out.

I downloaded and tried out CO tonight. I made it past the tutorial (still not sure what some things are, but that's OK). Can someone fill a complete noob in on where to go for the reunion? I was on STO and there was a COX channel there but I don't remember any activity on it tonight. It's been so long since I was playing STO for all I know the channel has been abandoned. Thanks so much!

(And at least I was able to somewhat recreate one of my CoH characters here.)

We're meeting in Atlas Park in front of City Hall.

Easiest way there: no matter where you are, type the following into the chatbox without quotes: "/mapmenu".  Choose "Paragon City", then "1 - Atlas Park".

You can use the same command to navigate anywhere you like in Paragon Chat.  To keep it handy in your power tray, enter the following command without quotes: "/macro PCTA mapmenu" (Paragon Chat Transit Authority).  You can then click the PCTA button in your power tray to call it up anytime you like.

And I play STO on a regular basis, the COX channel is indeed very much alive!  I'll keep an eye out for you if you still play Star Trek Online.

It's a little hard to tell, but you might be confused.

This thread is not talking about Champions Online. (There may be some get together happening there, but if so it's not what is being promoted here.)

You want to look into Paragon Chat. There's a whole forum about about it here that can tell you how to get started with it.

Actually, if you cannot for any reason make it into Paragon Chat today, there is also a group called Paragon Dawn, ex-CoH players in Champions Online, who will also be celebrating COH's 12th Anniv in Champions Online tonight.  They'll be gathering inside the City Hall in Millennium City, near the globe.  Here's a link to their FB page, which should have more details.

I also updated the City of Heroes thread of the event with an Epilogue (http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index.php/topic,11884.0.html).  Check that out too (it also has the album link.)

Captain Electric, I appreciate it!  As I told Nyghtshade, I'm social media challenged, so I don't use Facebook, Twitter, or others which is why I've been pushing event info here on Titan Network.  Nyghtshade, Steelhelm and Linuial have been more than enough to overcome that based on Thursday's success, as well as people like yourself.  Thanks for spreading the word!

Tim as well!  Thanks for recording!  I can't wait to see what you guys come up with!

Thank you, it was fun hosting it.

So, that's pretty much it for me.  All that's left to say is that we'll be back.

At least one monkey had a great time reliving the spirit of City of Heroes. Thanks for the great event.

Sorry I missed it folks.

The sad news is, it wasn't because I was doing anything important - I simply didn't check back in to see if anything had changed until it was already over.

This was a common tell I got in CoX on Cryptic games that Friday... It's all good.  We'll do it again. :D

I would just like to say a very well done effort by all involved! Sadly, I was dealing with a house full of sick people so I was not there as much as I would have liked to be. (This also led to me getting sick by that Monday morning for almost a week! ugh!). I see next year the celebration will be on a Friday. As you know, my show- Save COH Radio is usually on Fridays from 9-10:30 pm EST and I do "broadcast" from the steps of City Hall in Atlas Park in Paragon Chat. So, I'm signing up now to be involved in next year's celebration!! :)
