Title: Costume Save Location
Post by: Felderburg on April 06, 2016, 01:24:17 AM
Since I just installed CoH and Icon and PC on this computer, I tried both Icon and PC out. They save their costume files to different locations, which means that if I save a costume in Icon (regular) and want to use it in PC, I have to manually move it from folder to folder. I do recall some message when I first started PC about it finding costumes and option files, but since I had none (having done a clean install of all the stuff) those options were greyed out. Is there a way to get that option back?

Have you considered using file backup software to synchronize the folders, or using Windows to make a Symbolic Link (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NTFS_symbolic_link)?

I just typed in a Command Prompt as Administrator

mklink /d E:\Applications\City\cohBETA\costumes "C:\Users\My Name\AppData\Roaming\ParagonChat\Costumes"

and it seems to work fine. Icon now saves costumes in my AppData where Paragon Chat can find them.

No, because given my track record, I won't use the programs that much, and it's not *that* inconvenient to just drag and drop. I was just wondering if the process could be automated again, as it was on the initial running of PC.

That is just for finding the issue 24 files in order to load the data. It also offers to copy your costumes into the Paragon Chat structure for it. Changing where it points won't change where the costumes are saved, since 1.0 treats the COH installation as strictly hands off and does not save any files there.

Currently the only way to do what you want is the symbolic link trick. In the future an option may be added to customize the layout, but the goal was to eliminate any confusion about where files like that needed to be placed since lots of people have several different COH copies thanks to blindly installing things like Tequila.

The biggest challenge is that the COH client itself doesn't let you customize that.

Though I guess I should go ahead and ask why you would want to create costumes in Icon and move them over. I could see going the other way -- saving costumes from PC and using them with placeable NPCs in icon for screenshots. Costumes with NPC parts can't be loaded in PC.

If you just want to create characters without network connectivity, you can use Paragon Chat in offline mode (add -offline to the command line). You can save the costume files for later, or just go ahead and create the character and then use it later when you have a network connection.

The long term plan is for Paragon Chat to be able to do everything that Icon can while in offline mode. The new client tech started life as Icon 2.0 before it was scrapped, then resurrected.

I guess what I mean is: can we get PC to make the offer to copy the costumes again?

As for why... why not? :p I was just making sure Icon worked on my new computer (other than the audio it does). I pressed "random" a few times in the creator, got a thing I actually surprisingly liked a bit, so I saved it. I noticed it was saved to the CoH folder when I opened PC again, and tried to load it, and had no costume files available for loading. So I saved a costume from PC, and found it in the PC folder, and decided that might be annoying (but probably not, given my lack of actual use).

While I don't use Icon or PC all that much (the fact that I waited 4 months from getting a new compy to actually installing is evidence enough) I just hoped to make my life easier in the event that I made cool costumes in Icon and wanted to use them to interact with people in PC.

That's interesting. How many switches like that are there in PC? That one wasn't publicized as far as I can remember (although I see it is in the .98 patch notes). Will there be a way to do that without command line switches?

Does that include NPC editing mode, and the various developer-level things we can do in Icon NPC mode?

Sure, you can run it with the command line parameter -nux to see the first-time setup again.

Note that it will not overwrite existing files not matter what you tell it, so you can't use that to copy changed files in, only new ones.

Yes, it'll be a checkbox in the options panel UI (gear button) that was planned for 1.0, but wasn't finished in time.

I'll try to post a consolidated list of options later. Most of them have been in the patch notes at some point, but maybe not some of the new ones.

Yes, some developer options will be available in online mode when you're in a private instance, more will be available when you're in a local instance (either offline mode, or a local map but still chatting on XMPP).

Costumes with NPC parts can't be loaded in PC.

Are there any plans to enable that?

Please say yes! :P
