Title: First Look at extending Icon into Miniature Table Top
Post by: Jeff Anderson on June 14, 2016, 12:17:15 AM
After a couple of months of toil, thought I would show what is starting to be some pretty cool features to extend Icon for machima, role playing games, etc...

Application places a tabletop widget to the side of the desktop

the character explorer allows creating nested crowds of characters that can be linked, cloned and moved like windows explorer.

Single characters or entire crowds can be pasted into an active roster. Multiple characters in the roster can be spawned, locations can be saved, etc with a single command.

Each Character can be given multiple identities, Models or Costumes can be browsed, filtered, and previewed. Identites can activate an animated ability on load

Characters can be associated with multiple animated abilities. A UI provides for associated abilities with a hierarchical structure of FX, movs, and sound, all browseable, with realtime previewing.

Multiple Characters can be activated at a time which causes the active widget to display, active character can be moved, and abilities can be fired from the widget.

Once i get attacks, movements, and scenes done the "desktop" will be done, than Ill move to integrating an RPG ruleset.

Anyone interested in the application let me know, probably a month away for the first release

Mister Jeff Anderson, I am surprised not many folks are blown away about making Icon a tabletop gaming platform. This is huge and is close to having a combat simulator for Icon.

This will be cool for my dnd group on Fridays. I will keep them updated on your progress. Good thing about your app is that everything can be customized so this can lead to interesting adventuring sessions.

Please keep up the good work and I will be watching tentatively as things progress.

Thanks Mikr2006,

I have not spent alot of time on customer development for this, but I think what I am building addresses a latent need. Once I get version one going I'll be doing my best to get this into GMs hands. Hopefully some developers will want to integrate with their own ruleset. If there is demand ill make sure the code has an API so others can call what I have built into their own rule simulators.

Will let you know as soon as I have my first MVP to release :)

You should take paypal donations for this.

I may! But first I want to get a solid release in people's hands. Than get some feedback from people who have tried it.

Money would most likely come from showcasing this as a prototype, and using it to demonstrate some market traction, to a larger outfit that wants to put something real together. The money I am investing currently on developers is a bit of a sunk cost, of course if I could entice someone who already knows the internals of COH to take my money in terms of adding a feature or two, than I likely could really accelerate this :)

Wow, just catching up with your work.  I've been following your progress and I'm super impressed.  This is looking way more user friendly than the previous iteration.  Can't wait for the version release.

Thanks DarkC!

I am close to a desktop release, ie not RPG rules baked in, but all the components for creating animate-able miniatures in a user friendly way will be there. I just need to get crowd and character movement that (not the player that works of course) and we will be good to go!

Any news on where this project is? Don't mean to sound impatient or anything, just noticing it's been two months of silence now. Very much looking forward to this!  ;D

No worries!

We are still very much active at work, a few snags like the earthquake in Italy (one of my devs lives in Italy) and come snags in getting sound to play and a few other issues slowed us down. But close to a first release. I *hope* end of month, by cutting a few features. Sty tuned...

Ah, good to hear! (That it's still going, not the issues.)

Hope your dev is well, and that any of the other issues get sorted. Will go back to waiting patiently now.  :)

is this a overlaying ui or using the games ui? I ask this because I plan to use this for my recordings at some point and  I use fraps. Presently I can use the games hide ui feature to hide that from recordings and fraps hides mouse pointers.

It's an overlay, but you can move it out of the way so you don't see it when trying to record a movie
