Title: Tables of badges on accolade powers
Post by: thunderforce on December 01, 2019, 01:35:46 AM
I'd like to get more eyes on the discussion at https://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Talk:Freedom_Phalanx_Reserve_Member_Badge (https://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Talk:Freedom_Phalanx_Reserve_Member_Badge), which currently consists of me and someone confused about what Null did on live.

(The next bit will make more sense having read that discussion).

I think it's most important that the various pages that describe accolade powers that can only be awarded on either blueside or redside are consistently organised. Presently they are not - this badge has a redside column, but https://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Received_the_Atlas_Medallion_Badge (https://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Received_the_Atlas_Medallion_Badge) does not.

I would personally prefer that the way they are consistently organised is to remove the opposite-side column. https://paragonwiki.com/wiki/User:Thunderforce/Freedom_Phalanx_Reserve_Member_Badge_Draft (https://paragonwiki.com/wiki/User:Thunderforce/Freedom_Phalanx_Reserve_Member_Badge_Draft) is a userspace draft of what I propose. However, even if the consensus is to give them all columns for redside and blueside, I'd still be happy to make the changes to display them consistently.

I saw that discussion last week, and after I saw the talk page, I did look at the Atlas Medallion page, and noted the difference. However, I found several other villain badges that have both hero and villain lists, and several hero badges that do not. In fact, it seems to me that there is, generally, a lot to be desired in terms of badges that change name or are awarded depending on alignment and things like that.

It's odd that the badge pages with both hero and villain ways have a list of ways to get it for each alignment, and then also say "OR earn the alternate equivalent." I don't remember well enough if that's how it worked on live. But if you look at the Marshal badge (https://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Marshal_Badge) you can see that in the hero list, it tells heroes to earn the "The Next Big Thing" badge, which is in Mercy, and therefore unobtainable by heroes - but theoretically obtainable by vigilantes (I think?).

So it seems to me that ideally, a thorough revamp of these types of badges would be the best way to go. I don't want to do that, but if I did, I would reexamine every badge that switched names or was obtainable in different ways for heroes and villains (starting with: https://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Gaining_Villain_Badges_with_Effects and https://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Gaining_Hero_Badges_with_Effects) and double check the methods used to obtain them, and provide lists for *all four* alignments to achieve these badges. I suspect that for some badges, that would mean the lists become something like: "heroes: gain hero badge X and switch alignments to villain; villains, rogues, and vigilantes, do these tasks." But I don't know if that's how it would work.

OK; they still appear to be confused about how Null worked on live.

This (to me) seems to have the same problem. The Next Big Thing is obtainable by vigilantes... but Marshal isn't. The Hero column can mislead you into thinking you can get this badge without moving to a redside alignment, and you just can't.

Hence I would remove the Hero column, noting in the description for "Weapon of Mass Destruction" that it is called "Weapon Inspector Badge" blueside. (I wouldn't add such a note for "Paragon of Vice" because you just can't get it without going redside.)

I don't think that's necessary at all - I think it is because of the confusion introduced by the two columns that it seems that way. In particular, I think the idea that the method is different on vigilantes to heroes, or rogues to villains, has been introduced by the two columns. You've said to yourself "oh, but I can get this explore badge on a vigilante", and that's just a red herring.

I think (of course, I would) that https://paragonwiki.com/wiki/User:Thunderforce/Freedom_Phalanx_Reserve_Member_Badge_Draft (https://paragonwiki.com/wiki/User:Thunderforce/Freedom_Phalanx_Reserve_Member_Badge_Draft) is much more clear that there are two ways to do it; collect the blueside badges as either blueside alignment, or get the equivalent redside accolade as either redside alignment then swap alignment.
