This one was a very special commission. Imagine my surprise when I got asked to do a tribute video... for Mercedes Lackey, and her characters Belladonna Aura and Zach Marlowe.
We chatted extensively about what she wanted, hammered out a script based on the storyline she'd given me, and then she cut me loose. "Make me cry," she said. Well, I think she did.
The end of Bella and Zach's story was forced upon Mercedes by COH's closure, and for two creative spirits, this was a heartbreaking event for us both. Still, out of sorrow comes something of meaning. I am privileged and grateful that I was able to make this for her, thus preserving a story that might otherwise have been lost.
The music, as chosen by Mercedes, is VNV's "Illusion."

Something of interest - when VV first sent me the script, she said she wanted me to use VNV Nation's "Illusion." I, however, just could not read the script without hearing another song as the music. So I recut the video to a different track as well.
She said, "Hell, upload them both."
So I did. This one uses "Sleep" by Poets of the Fall.

Zach Marlowe's player, Andy Wein, left the game years ago, due to having a couple of wee ones. When he left, he decided he didn't want to just fade out, he wanted to go out with a bang. So his character, Zach "Bestial Boy" Marlowe, Bella's true love, died saving Washington DC. The whole story is over on the CCCP site, www.cccpgroup.us
I didn't know about demorecording then, and I have regretted never getting vids of Zach and Bell together. I regretted it even more bitterly when the shutdown was announced.
Then I remembered that Samuraiko owed me a vid....
I am not ashamed to tell you this has made me cry, so hard....but I am so glad to have it.

As I've said elsewhere, due to a combination of events that includes the closure of CoX, I have become emotionally vulnerable. For the past few weeks, I have had a harder time choking down fear, disappointment, and grief than I have been in the past. My facade cracks more easily now than perhaps it ever has at any point in my adult life.
I knew it was a risk to click, and to watch, but I did it anyway.
The tears still flow, but I don't regret watching. That was heart-breakingly beautiful, and I thank you for sharing it.

I actually made myself cry with the Poets of the Fall version - not so much on the VNV Nation one, but to each their own. As long as people like them...
