Title: Finished Call to Action: CoH is 1st, 3rd in MMOSite Readers' Choice Awards!
Post by: Felderburg on December 05, 2012, 05:22:30 PM
Voted!

CoH came in 1st for "Most Classic" and 3rd in "Best Community"! Great job!

The original Call to Action: Vote for CoH at MMOSite! Vote DAILY Until Jan. 6th!

Vote!

Make sure you've voted in each category! The votes for "Most Classic" are lagging behind "Best Community"! Click the individual category pages in the rankings section below to make sure you've voted for both!

A note: If you open more than one tab with the voting pages, make sure you refresh the browser tabs you haven't voted in yet! There seems to be an issue with multiple tabs and counting votes that requires a refresh. If you get a "Vote Failed" message, refresh a few times and keep trying - make sure you get the "No repeat votes until tomorrow" message!

Make sure you open all three pages (the main CoH link and the two category pages) and vote in each - it appears that works to get multiple votes on one computer! Use the category pages FIRST, then the main page. And even if it doesn't, it does help to make sure your vote was counted in each category.

MMOSite is having their Readers' Choice Awards, and City of Heroes is up for two categories! You do not have to register for the site, and right now CoH is 25th 4th not 1st in each category, so get out the votes!

http://event.mmosite.com/gameprize/?action=gamelist&id=32
http://event.mmosite.com/gameprize/?action=gameinfo&gid=93

Why Vote?

Why not? Seriously though, vote because it shows that City of Heroes and its community is a force to be reckoned with. The fact that a game that has been cancelled can have a run at top three in a reader's choice awards, even against games that are offering rewards for finishing, says something. It says that we believe City of Heroes is the best MMO out there, and it says that the CoH community is still going strong, even without the game to hold us together. It says that we're not voting just for in-game bribes - we truly believe in Paragon City's greatness.

Ranking

As of 12/12/12, 10:22 AM PST (Paragon Studios Time)

Overall votes: 11,701
Best Community: 3rd Place http://event.mmosite.com/gameprize/?action=gamelist&id=30 (3582 votes out of 2nd place , 6081 to 9663)
Most Classic: 1st Place http://event.mmosite.com/gameprize/?action=gamelist&id=32 (1472 ahead of 2nd place, 5620 to 4148)

I'll do my best to keep this updated, but I will be out of the country for the last 10 days of December. So if a mod wants to update the rankings, that's fine.

Voting more than once?

The FAQ (http://event.mmosite.com/gameprize/?action=faq) says that each IP can vote three times a day. It appears that this is ambiguously worded, and means that each IP gets three votes in a category per day, to split amongst three different games.

There are rumors in this thread that using different browsers works to vote more than once. I just had Google Chrome reject my vote (I guess I voted already today?) but Mozilla Firefox counted it. So be sure to try different browsers just in case.

If you have the opportunity to vote at home and work (or an internet cafe, airport with free wifi, or anywhere that has a different IP address than your primary computer) you can do that too! If you can access more than one IP address daily, vote from both places!

Done, and it seems you can vote daily.

Yes, you have to register, but it is worth it to get CoH to the top10 at least.

And, we're ahead of WoW on the "Best Community" page.

All the more reason not to give them anything more than my IP address.

Done, and will come back every day to do it again. Thanks for the heads up. I won't stand for CoH being anywhere outside the top five.

And to clarify, as has been said priorly, no you don't need to log in. Just hit the no thanks button when it asks if you want to log in.

Things like this are often ripe for corruption and manipulation. Honestly, I somewhat wish we did have to log in, it'd be far less likely to be abused. But hey. What's a few clicks every day?

Even if this site means nothing by itself, every show of force we can muster to make CoH that much more visible is worth it, imho.

From what I've seen, they expected us all to be sad but just give up on caring after the game shut down.

All our chances of revival count on proving them wrong.

Worth noting: clicking the "Vote" button on the page linked in the OP seems to work for both categories, and does not require logging in. Going to individual category pages seems to require logging in, and would also appear to not be as efficient as the one click vote.

Other communities are using links on their own game websites for the one click vote - I heard about this awards things from STO, where it was linked three or four times in a single news post (which would probably explain why it's in the top three for all its categories).

Voting is open until January 6th, so this should probably be stickied.

Given the tricks, I'm even more disheartened that we're only at just shy of 1600 votes between the two categories. Not "shame on us," but there are more than 22000 people registered on this site. Even if only 10% are looking at the Save Paragon side, we could easily have done better than that in 24 hours.

And, no, I'm not going to "game" the system. I have no problem with the redside folks doing it, but it's not for me.

Think of it as a vote on behalf of the people who aren't voting. *shrug*

As long as we can bump Perfect World, I'm happy. That game's community is HORRIBLE! PWE must be offering some incentive for category wins. If I had a dollar for every venomancer or pet that got ganked and cussed out by a greedy farmer... I could buy every game NCsoft has ever killed and give it a sequel.

Try a different browser.

If I try to vote with Firefox, I get the "vote failed".  But IE works fine.

I would strongly suggest just using the CoH page to vote. Based on my own experience, it seems more reliable than going to the individual categories. But if you want to do it the other way, go for it.

The FAQ for the contest says each IP gets to vote 3 times a day, but I'm pretty confident that's just not true. Perhaps they mean each log in? I may try signing up, just to see what happens.

The other games have a big advantage, because their devs can post the link on their website, and clicking on it gets their players to vote for their game in ever category. STO's community manager is pushing it hard, and you can see how the link works for STO here (DO NOT CLICK THE VOTE LINK THIS IS JUST AN EXAMPLE OF WHY WE NEED TO DO MORE WORK THAN OTHER GAMES): http://sto.perfectworld.com/news/?p=777401 I imagine other games are similar, and might even have the link on their home page.

I was able to vote individually from a different browser and IP address. Also, a smart phone would fit this, as well.

And, while I want CoH to win both, the experiences I had playing STO were all positive, especially in the chat. I never had a rude response to a request for help. If we're not gonna get first, I'm OK if it's them.

I think that tonight I will sign up, and see if I can get them to give us a link to share, so all we have to do is publicize that link, rather than directing people to this thread, and then to the website, or even to that site at all. It'll also allow me to see if there's a benefit to voting while signed up.

Edit: I signed up with the site, and posted in the forum asking about getting a CoH one click link.

I also tried to vote again, but it seems that even after signing up, it's one vote per IP address, no matter what the FAQ says.

Yessir! COH has made it to 3rd in Best Community and has temporarily dropped to 4th in Most Classic MMO. We're only 500-550 votes away from 1st in both categories, so set your target, vote daily, and keep spreading it around the community.

I'll admit that I want the juvenile satisfaction of rubbing NCsoft noses in the final results. As of now, COH is far beyond any other NCsoft titles in the list. Aion (48 votes), Lineage II (16 votes), and Guild Wars (13 votes) in the Most Classic MMO category and Guild Wars (16 votes) in the Best Community category. Smoke that, MMOKiller!

I've been voting every day since this thread went up!

One thing that concerns me content-wise about this site is a pretty nasty unicorn article about CoH's closing that is linked to from the very same page that you vote for CoH from.

Click the tab on the right called "Microvoice" then click on the link in the 2nd post down.  It's called... City of Heroes Shutting Down But Are Recent Demands from Gamers Going Too Far?

Here is the direct link to the article:  http://my.mmosite.com/26332350e310fcdf8784c1f261a0f052/blog/item/facc8c3ea6676bcdb5fe83f443f236df.html

It basically says we're nuts for wanting to save the game, hammers on CoH and especially it's "obnoxious" player base for everything imaginable, and the only comical part is that this supposed reporter seems to have no real knowledge of any of NCSoft's games, how they're run, or what their history is concerning shutting them all down.  She also seems never to have even played CoH to know how many fans it has or what it is really like, let alone how brutishly NCSoft has treated Paragon Studios and CoH's player base.

You can actually post comments to her article without needing a login, so you don't have to get too embroiled with the actual site anyway.

Hang on, now. I'll go vote, but before I give out my e-mail, what is MMOSite?

I don't know if this was answered. MMOSite appears to be a website dedicated to general MMO news. It has its own community, with forums and a cash shop that sells game time cards (including one for Star Wars Galaxies, but I guess it's good for any SOE game - just weird it says SWG specifically). I'm honestly not really sure what the point of the site is, other than advertising for MMOs, but I guess if you're a general MMO enthusiast it would be a cool place.

It also has advertising deals with various MMOs, including web page background ads and giving away free items (they're currently giving away uniforms for STO). They seem generally focused on advertising MMOs run by Asian companies, but they have stuff for all MMOs as well.

Edit to add: You do NOT need to give MMOSite anything to vote. Just click the big link in the OP and click the "Vote" button there.

I wouldn't worry about people on the site who live under bridges; if we have a strong showing or, ideally, finish first it's something else positive that we can talk about.

Oh I don't think it's cool. I don't really get why it exists, actually. But I'm not sure that linking to things related to CoH on the CoH page should be held against them. While all of their content appears to be generated by the site itself, the posts are from individual users. Additionally, they're obviously not out to paint the CoH playerbase in a negative light, or they wouldn't have a link to a post about the Dinner for Devs event, because there's no way to see that as anything but positive; or the "Killing them softly" blog post which is pro-CoH (and anti-NCSoft).

She also seems never to have even played CoH to know how many fans it has or what it is really like, let alone how brutishly NCSoft has treated Paragon Studios and CoH's player base

Sounds like someone is butthurt that people had the audacity to criticize a corporation.

*shrug*

In a lot of ways Bloggers are at the mercy of their audience requirements.  They need to get talked about and generate traffic.  What generates more traffic?  Posting "Hey these guys are cool" or posting "Hey, these guys are wrong and here's why"?

Didn't care for the article, seemed pretty uninformed, like an opinion fluff piece.  I wouldn't necessarily condemn the website hosting it.

We are neck and neck with Perfect World in both categories, but we're gonna have to get a serious "turn out the vote" campaign to beat Knight Online for best community. Anyone who plays CO should put the word out on their global chat channel, since they aren't up for anything.

Belay that. CO is on the list for best community, but they currently sit at #14. They're up for more categories (five), but with just over a thousand votes, I doubt they're doing much better in any one of them.  Maybe we could vote them up, since they're not competition in those categories? Just vote for us, first, so the Best Community vote goes where it belongs... ;)

By accident, I noticed City of Villains is in the list of games, too. From the home page, click on 'C' in the alphabetical list at the bottom and you'll see City of Villains to the right of City of Heroes. Click it and it doesn't go to a voting page, but the page does reload with a search box at the bottom. That search box seems to have the ability to suggest a category for a game. Select City of heroes and then select Best F2P. I did it, but it may take multiple suggestions before it gets added to a category, if it has any effect at all. I couldn't say. Just found that search form by accident. So... :D

I'd say that explains the motivation behind their skyrocket to first in Best Community. But we've got staying power and can still surpass them. besides, they only need 3rd place to claim their reward. I'm happy to see them in 2nd or 3rd. :)

For me it's not about winning. It's about standing up for my community and saying to the gaming community at large that we're still here, and we still love our game. Even if we only end up in 4th or 5th, we'll have only made it that high out of love and dedication, the same things that are keeping us together here since the shutdown.

I suppose I should go back and see what they've done to me for pointing out that it probably indicates that they don't deserve to win any of them...  ;D

But not by much!

KEEP VOTING...REMEMBER TO VOTE ON EACH BEST COMMUNITY AND MOST CLASSIC EVERY DAY

I know we can do it people! We are not far ahead of most classic rpg so we need to remember to keep it up every single day until votes are no longer being taken!

We NEED to get best community in Addition to most classic so vote for both every day and do NOT forget!
If we win both it will be a huge thing for us!

That is the way popularity contests always go. That is why Stars and famous people get more tail then the rest of us!

Because its popular and you will get something out of it like popularity if you get or do that one thing or go with what everyone else is doing.

They are being bribed more than anyone else.

The Fact that we are number 3 and DONT EVEN HAVE A GAME....means quite a lot to me right now.

Too bad this is running for a month. Every developer with half a brain will have set up a bribe system by then.

If the contest ended today, the result would be intriguing. After a month of the bribe machine, we'll in nth place and nobody will know a bloody thing.

Take screenshots of the official pages offering rewards to those communities. Then, regardless of what place we come in, we can show those to anyone who claims that we didn't earn number one. We can proudly say there was no ingame reward we could have gotten... and look what we still did.

Those are good too. :)   What I meant though was the pages on those other games' websites, the article or forum thread where they ask their players to vote. It's clear evidence that they're trying to buy votes, by offering their players ingame rewards if they win. Now, proving that won't change the outcome of the vote at all. However. If anyone tries to tell us that some other game earned first place, we can show those screenshots to them and point out that we're the only game in the top three that didn't have to be bribed into voting. We voted because we actually like our community.

For the Knight Online players, they don't need 1st place to get their reward. 2nd and 3rd will do. So, perhaps they won't have the will to maintain such a strong lead as long as they are confident they are still going to get their carrot.

MicroVolts is offering store points I think. I don't know if MP is their currency. But again, maybe once the players have a decent surplus of points they will lose interest.

I'm remaining optimistic. Heroes don't quit. :)

I don't understand why there's one overarching Vote Now button on the main page our link sends you to, but somehow it is only counting for Best Classic MMO and not Best Community.  That must be the case because Best Community has only got about half the votes of Classic MMO.  And yet, after pressing the Vote button on the main page, it tells me I have voted in both categories.

Could it be instead that someone out there has twittered or linked directly to the Classic MMO vote without realizing the community one is even there?

I updated the OP a few days ago to tell people to click the individual categories to make sure they're voting in each. The thing is, it usually tells me that my vote already happened in each category when I click the individual vote buttons, so it seems to be working.

Edit: I think the discrepancy is people voting in individual categories earlier, but it could also be that some people shared one category's link. I discovered one such post on Facebook, added the overall CoH link to it as a comment.

Not sure which argument it validates, but it did strike me as odd.

While you are all voting online....

The Colbert Report is a topical show, written daily for production in the evenings, so there is every chance we could get a mention if we can just catch their attention.

So this is the plan.  Tweet and Twitter and Splash his Face Book Page with the 'Save CoH' campaign.  We need the immediate impact that internet contact can provide.  With the Holidays coming fast, his show will be going into reruns in the next week or so, and it could be very helpful to get mentioned before that happens.

I do not feel this sort of campaign is out of order.  The Twitter Account information is publicly available from Comedy Central's website.

Comedy Central can be contacted via website feedback at
http://www.comedycentral.com/help/website-feedback

The Colbert Nation Comedy Central Home Page

The Colbert Report Face Book Page

Stephen Colbert's Personal Twitter
https://twitter.com/StephenAtHome

The Colbert Report/Colbert Nation Twitter
https://twitter.com/ColbertReport

Some intern has the job of reading the Twitter feed come Monday morning and we want him to have a reason to tell the writers of the show about us.  Tweet him, Tweet the Colbert Nation.  Post on their FB page.  Link the Disney buyout project, link the various mentions CoH has received on MMO sites and so on.

Mention how high we are on the Polls!

Well don't underestimate the power of the carrot. They're giving what I assume is in game currency every time a player votes every day.
If you look at the game's Facebook page they have 167,000 likes and a more international audience than COH does err did (bah that sucks to write), BUT that doesn't mean they'll last forever.

Honestly, normally I hate this kind of manipulation of votes, but whatever, I want to get CoH seen.  Not our fault they can't have a more secure voting page.  (This would be the logic most of my villains used in-game.)

Wouldn't matter how secure their voting page was when they don't disqualify bribes.

We'll be operating under vigilante rules now.

So, since it's only been going a week, we're all trying to find ways to vote more than once a day, and there are "only" about 4000 votes, give or take, we can safely assume only about 200 or 300 people are actually doing the voting?

Well we Lost Best community without a doubt. I have no freaking idea what Microbots bribed their players with to get 4k votes overnight but we will never catch up. Best thing to do is make absolute puppies sure we get 3rd and no less.

Keep Spamming Most Classic, we have a REALLY good lead in that one and if we keep up the lead than we have a good chance of winning that one since it appears that community is not bribing their players...yet.

I just noticed... Knight Online seems to have vanished from the Best community rankings. Maybe they got disqualified for bribery?

Its still beyond me how Micro Volts is even in the community category... when it comes to online shooters "best community" is the exact opposite of what comes to mind.

Meh, honestly these polls seem like complete BS. In what world is "Mu Online" more popular than WoW and Eve? More importantly, what is Mu Online? Same deal with "Micro Volts" being supposedly more popular than WoW, LOTRO, STO, etc. I see all these games that I've never even heard of with huge edges over indisputably more popular titles. I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of the games ranked higher than WoW in every category are unapologetic, cookie cutter WoW clones. Something funny is going on here.

I really get the impression that it's a select group of Asian MMO companies that even care about this site and it's reader's choice awards. If CoH were still running, I doubt any of us would care either. It's good publicity, to be sure, but I'm not really sure who the target readership / community is.

Good points and I'll be first to admit I'd probably be one of those ignoring the results. But I am really glad to see Knight Online off the list for Best Community and it would not surprise me to see the same happen to MicroVolts.

Keep up the voting! ;) We'll be the ones to make sure people hear about the results and squeeze every drop of PR out of it for #SaveCOH.

Is NCsoft in that select group?  Or any of its major competitors?
If we can show other Asian MMO companies that NCsoft cancelled a popular game, won't NCsoft lose face (even more than they already have)?

Given that NCSoft's games aren't doing very well, other than CoH, I would imagine they don't care. Perfect World, a Chinese company, on the other hand, seems to have an interest. STO's community manager posted about it, and Perfect World International is doing well in its categories.

I don't really know anything about the site, so anything I say about it should be taken as a person making observations based on a very limited experience with it.

Back to your point from a couple of posts ago, Feld, I keep having a problem on one device or another where I get the multiple votes message, but I always am able to cast at least one vote. Each of the last three days, though, I've had that problem. (Yesterday was different, because I could cast a couple of extra from school, thanks to how they manage their domain and public wireless.)

The hazard here would be that we end up disqualifying ourselves with this thread and its discussion of how to "game" the vote. While it's clearly not as egregious as the Knights Online and MicroVolts votes, we could still be seen as cheating.

That said, we have a respectable lead on the games behind us, in both categories. Good work, everyone!

Their FAQ says each IP (address) can vote three times. Nothing about people or accounts on the site being limited, just IP. I'm still trying to get my other two votes per day, though.

Edit: ...maybe. I think it's possible that you can vote on the individual pages AND the main page, and get more votes? If I weren't so busy just clicking "Vote," I might try to figure out what was going on.

13k for the first one lol.

Maybe if we got everyone to vote for us the way we did to get to sign the petition we could win lol. All of those 21k people vote two or three days in a row and we could win easily!

Still number 1 in Most classic!

So it seems that the "3 votes per IP address" thing is three per category for three different games, not three any way you want it. Which was ambiguously worded.

If Knight got disqualified over bribes, how the heck is MicroVolts still up there?

We don't really know why Knight Online disappeared.

Edit: It didn't disappear, it moved to 9th with 725 votes. Time for speculation!

It looks like their votes in Best PvP stayed high, though, as they have 8000 in that category. Weird.

Must have been some sort of error. Knight Online's votes have been restored (unless they got 40,000 votes last night).

Edit: I should also add that the FAQ's "Vote 3 times a day" is per CATEGORY, not per GAME. It was ambiguously worded.

I guess my wording was ambiguous there. We can vote for three different games in a category per day. Once per game per category per day.

BUT it looks like using the three different pages to vote (the main page and the two category pages) gets CoH multiple votes in each category. The moral of the story is: open each link, click vote, and refresh until you get the "No repeat votes" message instead of the "vote failed" message on each page.

Additionally, I've been editing the OP throughout, so let me know if it looks good.

Maybe their bots will falter...

There is clearly no question who has the best community.

Edit: They also closed a long time ago. In 2011, in fact. So... I'm not really sure why they're in the 2012 awards.

Further Edit: Should CoH be in the 2013 awards, it will be a good comparison.

Best Community - COH = 6,872
Best Community - Bots - 17,389
Closest Rival - Knights - 11,413

Yeah....Unless we convince the 21k people through youtube videos and launching an online champagne to vote for both catagories two or three days in a row for all of them. No way lol.

Most classic we got this won already because we are smoking the others by 2k or more there. We just gotta keep it up to stay ahead.

I just hope that if CoH is on next year's (and why not? SWG is on this year's, even though it was shut down in 2011) we do better than them.

I hope the reality of these things is noticed by others, regardless of whether it affects the outcome.

In the FAQ forum thread on MMOSite, there is at least one poster noting that the whole thing is a joke because of people rotating ISPs to get more in game gear from bribing companies.

The way I see it, even if CoH gets top 3 in each category, we've still done a heck of a lot better than many games with active subscribers.

Remember to vote every day!

There are some games that advertised the campaign when it started, but haven't done anything since. We can't assume that will still be the case in January - they may realize they need a last minute bump and make posts about it again, or start bribing right before the voting is over.

Moral of the story: we need as many votes as possible!

Edit: It looks like if you open the category pages first, and then the main page, you can get multiple votes in, but not the other way around.

Personally, I very much feel like it's cheating to use ingame rewards to drum up votes for "best community". That's what's so great about all this... maybe we're only in third place, but we now know for a fact that no other game community can honestly compare to ours.

It takes cheating to beat what we've got. 8)

wtf are some of these game? Microvolts and knight online seem to be ahead of us for best community. I haven't even heard of them.
Earlier posts confirm that these games and others are bribing their game communities with in-game rewards for voting. Don't give it a second thought and be proud that we are in third place out of pure loyalty to the game and community.

Don't give it a second thought

I'm proud that we're on the map but what the other two game developers are doing seems very wrong to me.

Knight Online seems less bad with the "If we win; we'll do events" route but what Microvolts is doing seems completely reprehensible: "We'll give you money for voting for us."

I've sent two email to MMOsite's PR person @:

Michelle (PR Representative)
Responsible for Advertising , Event , News , etc.
Email:

1st
It has come to my attention that the makers of the Microvolts game are paying off their community in order gain more votes for the awards.

http://www.microvolts.com/

This seems to me like an unacceptable practice for anyone that has been nominated for any kind of award. At the very least there are ethical implications if not an outright defilement of the voting pool. I ask that you please look into the matter.

2nd
I still have not heard back from you regarding Microvolts clearly unethical practice of buying votes. They are over 20,000 votes ahead of anything else and that is questionably all due to Microvolts paying off their community in order to garner more votes. It is a ridiculously inflated number and what they are doing is unethical by any democratic standards. Please do something about this, we are preparing to take this matter to other media.

Waiting to hear back from them.

Sadly the company probably won't care. The 'ethics' of any internet contest these days is utterly pathetic. It's amazing how many times I see art contests that are 'rigged' before they even start. I can't count how many times I've seen all these complex ground rules for an art contest, about what the art piece should and should not be - acceptable mediums and content and deadlines... and then finally at the very end of the long manuscript, they say, "Make sure to tell all your Facebook friends to..." and I close the tab right there. Granted, some people would cheat even without that recommendation, but why even bother encouraging that kind of behavior? It then comes down to who has the most people on their friends list, which is absolutely disgusting. /endrant

Hrm, I've not had that problem.
I do have to refresh the page if more than one of those pages are open at a time. It'll just say that my vote didn't go through or something... and I refresh and then vote with zero problem.

Unfortunately, that is not likely to help you two.  :-\

I've found that it's not tracking by calendar day so much as a 24-hour period.  So, if I don't vote until 11:00 pm one day, I can't vote before 11:00 pm the next day.

if its doing that, would changing your computers date/time affect that?

in borderlands 2 there were some bosses which became locked after you killed them and this lock expired after 24 hours of real time, so if you changed your computers clock then you could kill them as much as you wanted per day

just a thought really, but its another way that people could potentially "game" this voting system if it works that way

Well I vote twice a day. Sometimes 4 times a day due to my dynamic ip. But I'll have to reconnect first.
The other 2 by my mobile (also dynamic).

Btw. I wonder if those guys at mmosite ever take a look at the votes.
Giant MMOs like World of Warcraft a far behind us. Okay, we are an active community and those guys know it.
But as an admin or moderator....I would smell that theres something really fishy! Two complete unknown MMOs far in front of the old giants and biggest communities?! Cannot be true at all.

I think that maybe someone at mmosite just had to much time to create those polls. I wonder if there will be some sort of annoucement after the whole voting stuff. This in the end would mean that someone HAS to read the results!

And a brainiac monkey would see that the community vote is sort of a fake vote. Hopefully this will happen. Would be nice to see something like that:

"And as of true community votes, City of Heroes had won. Sorry for both other communities. But we want to keep this poll fair, so we can't support people wich are not playing by the rules. (As for the companies: Buying people or votes is a NO-NO!)

Bear in mind as well that this mmosite is an international forum, so the games some of us have never heard of might be from other countries. I also don't think that most 'giants' care about a random site's rigged poll. But it's going to be pretty nice to have CoH in the top three of its categories.

The only response to the thread was about it being a "popularity contest." Bribes do not = popularity.

Well I don't have any account there. Also I don't want to make any sort of "cry" there. The reason is simple: I belong to a community wich is pretty "loud" and noticed. Doing any actions such as "crying" might give us bad public relations.
Due the nature of the comments I saw there, I believe it is simply an unnecessary action to be "loud" in that case ;).

But this is just be my opinion :P

I've been voting every day.
I have to say, I've been half expecting some game to jump up in Most Classic one day too... But yeah, with the amount of time left, who knows what could happen.

The whole in-game bribe stuff really is a lousy move. Even when our game was active (gah, that hurt a bit), I don't recall our devs ever bribing us in such a way. Only for their own contests/events perhaps.

As Dean Martin's character so eloquently put it in a great movie... "That's not a sporting way to win. That's a shitty way to win".

If it drives pages views (therefore revenue) for an unscientific poll, then why should they care?

Because something more reputable would stand a better chance of the general gaming populous actually giving a ****? With the system as it is now, they stand a better chance at establishing themselves as a laughing stock.

And... scientific poll? Is that even possible in the "Do a barrel roll" era?

Who take polls at game web sites seriously?  Or new websites?  Or radio websites?  Or online petitions?

Well scientific pools usually imply that the participants are randomly selected though they still need to say yes, and can only vote once.  Unscientific is open to all and therefore a group could coordinate voting and usually means that their isn't a reasonable means to prevent a single individual from replying multiple times.

The old Daedalus Project MMO polls were fairly scientific.

25,784 total votes for CoH.

13,165 in Best Community got us 3rd.  Not bad at ALL for a game that was recently murdered by its publisher and could promise its players nothing.  Unlike Knight and MicroVolts.
12,619 in Most Classic MMO got us 1st place.  Congrats guys!

All in all, a great showing for CoH.  Thanks to everyone who voted early and often.

Yeah, we knew. That's what makes our showing noteworthy: it's for a "dead" game (in stasis?), and there was no incentive other than, well, the community. You can look at it as third, or you can look at it as first in our "class." :)

I believe it voted for City of Heroes in both categories (I'd assume ALL categories it was nominated for). That's what it did for me, as I'd double check by refreshing afterward.

I have to admit that I'm not all that keen about "most classic"... it's like, "Oh, yeah, that old game was old, but kinda cool", you know what I mean?
Don't get me wrong... I am pleased that we were first in that as well as 3rd (but really 1st) for the "best community".
I'm just so sick of CoH being dead and dealing with people who talk about CoH as though it was some older, unpopular thing... it was a vibrant, innovative and unique modern video game.
Again, I'm pleased and it is certainly a classic for all time... but it's so not a standard "classic" old game that isn't good enough to be considered "best game" without the word "classic" in front of that award.
It was the best damn game in 2012. Not just the most classic...

Haha... okay, I just had to mention that. I'm good now.  :P

That is indeed what it did. The interesting thing, which I edited into the OP, was that if you clicked it first, you couldn't vote on the category pages (giving 1 vote per category). But if you voted at each individual category, and then the main game page, you could get multiple votes in (2 per category).

Edit: I think we should certainly follow Rae's example and get a few press releases out there. This is nothing but good publicity.

Lineage wasn't nominated for any.

Aion was 17th in Favorite, 12th in Best F2P, 12th in Best Classic and 16th in Best PVP.

Lineage II was 33rd in Best Classic, 35th in Best PVP.

Guild Wars was 40th Best Community and 32nd in Best Classic

Blade & Soul was 10th in Best Graphics and 6th Most Anticipated

Well it was the only game whose community cared enough to vote and vote often was the game they axed.  Would we have bothered if we weren't trying to make a statement?

Naa, we'd just be raising $10k in charity money instead.  8)

Probably not. *shrug* The real test will be if CoH is on next year's poll (Star Wars Galaxies was on this year's, so why not?) and if we do as well as this year.

This can also be unstickied. I think we made our point.

After two responses talking about the rewards that MMOSite was giving its members for voting, I finally got a PM regarding the bribes:

Oh, I see.MMOsite has cut the cheat vote already. We could do nothing to some players if they just vote agame for reward, as we couldn't konw which one is vote for favor and which one is vote for reward. What's more, the game offical afford the reward, not MMOsite and we do not have the right to prevent game offical do something for their own game.

Doubtful; that looks fairly typical of a lot of internet posting style I've seen that is very English-as-first-language. It's just rather stream-of-consciousness (which is a so-called "writing style" that I wish Faulkner were MALIGNED in school for "inventing," rather than for which he is lauded by English teachers who would throw a hissy fit at the dreadful grammar and utter illegibility of it if a student turned in such tripe).

That's the worst of the messages I received; the others were reasonable, if missing a few capital letters.

All these years I thought I was the only person in the country who loathed Faulkner's style.

I never grasped the double-think necessary to view him as a great writer.

Thanks for making my day.
