Title: CoX Music and SFX Compilation(Now in MP3!)
Post by: Ashen Fury on December 07, 2012, 08:47:15 PM
Hey guys, so I spent the last few days archiving and converting all of the CoX music files on the Paragon Wiki, and am now uploading a file so that everyone can enjoy some coh music on the go :)

Files inside are in both converted mp3 format and the original ogg format. I cleaned up some of the files names so that they were more clear on the neighborhoods they originated from.

Enjoy everyone!

Edit: Arachnion was kind enough to provide me with the SFX files and they have now been converted to mp3 and added into the package as well. Thanks!!!

https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B2WKUEfXJnKecVZSV3hHZlJNakU/edit?usp=sharing (https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B2WKUEfXJnKecVZSV3hHZlJNakU/edit?usp=sharing)

Edit: You can use 7-Zip (http://www.7-zip.org/) on Windows to open .rar archive files.  It also handles ZIP files much faster than the native compression/decompression tools on Windows.

Thank you~

Where can one get a free .rar extractor?

7-Zip, which is free.

Also, to the OP - a huge THANK YOU for putting this together. I was thinking about this the other day if there was a .rar of the music in its entirety lurking about here somewhere. And with both formats. :)

Haha its a good one. I actually went a step further with it and converted the atlas park theme, the mission complete theme, and the villain mission complete theme to .wav files, and now they play when i log onto windows, finish a download, and log out, respectively. :D

There was Bank Robbery music?

I've been a red sider ever since I joined the game in 2006, and have since then raided many banks.. in mayhems.

I assume you mean from mayhem missions, yes? I only remember alarms from toppling banks... I could go take a look, though.

Done. Sent to you via PM.

Are the original composers and artists listed anywhere?  I'd like to feature the William's Square theme on my memorial site (http://r0k.us/rock/games/CoH/HallsOfHeroes/) and be able to give appropriate credit.

IIRC, most of the original music was just stock that anyone could license for use. There wasn't a specific named composer until Jason Graves did the music for Going Rogue.

Did *any* music ever play on loading screens, even? :o

When the game first starts up. Maybe it was the log-in screen. It was the first song I ever heard when playing CoV anyhow.

Try one of the ogg files in this pack, it is full of villain "front end" music.

Register for either Dropbox or SugarSync and upload it there.

Cloud storage sites are far better than most file sharing sites, IMO.

If Dropbox and SugarSync won't work, I recommend Mediafire.

I'd upload the original music archive you provided myself, but my upload speed is terrible.

A large number of the initial sound effects were purchased from very common sound effect sources. The Atlas theme, for instance, can be heard in commercials and movies rather more frequently than I ever thought.

That police scanner clip has been around forever and is in a ton of movies and shows, not to mention the opening credits of every episode of C.O.P.S.

Probably why it seemed a little familiar :)

Right in the feels. So many hours spent listening to the track labeled TitleScreenIssue17. So many hours of alting. Thank you so much for uploading this. It really brings up memories, more so than just watching a video of city of heroes would. Just reminds me when I was little and didn't have an account at the time, going through Outbreak? as a Blaster that I tried to make look like Boba Fett on my brother's account.

Drat - for some reason it doesn't have the alternate music for Fort Hades, which was the awesome rock piece used in the CoV trailer (where the Phalanx goes head to head with Recluse and the patrons).

I also need to nab the music from the cutscenes - especially the one of Statesman's death and my double's self-sacrifice in front of the portal.

I haven't slogged thru the files in a long time - are the sound effects there as well or were they on the server side?

I wouldn't mind getting bytes of the level up sound or various powers.

Also I usually either turned the music off or set the volume really low so I never realized how much music was actually in the game.

Brought a tear to me eye listening to the Atlas Park City Hall theme today.

I found my pigg viewer program so I will probably start going thru the files this week to find what I want.

Anyone have any idea what the sound/music was called when you level up?

I have searched thru every sound and music pigg file and can't find anything that even comes close (at least by name)

Don't forget that the staged installation of the game since Freedom mixed up some components. Try piggs\stage2a\sound\Ogg\FrontEnd\levelup7.ogg

If I could make a request?

There was a ROCKIN bit of music that was introduced within the last 2 issues that started up just as you were about to have a boss fight. It got a bit over-used in Incarnate stuff, but I still liked it. I don't know if it was in the music pack listed in the OP... I looked at the version I had grabbed earlier and I don't see the song I'm looking for in there...

I can confirm the file works and is there, I just tried it.

Dropbox or SugarSync.

Register an account, install their program (their web interface won't support such a large single archive).

Then upload your music archive with it to your new account there.

Then from the web interface when it finishes uploading, link it here.

I've put a copy in my public folder below.  I advise only use the 'download' button for files, not for folders.

I'm paid through for another year so these files have a home for at least that long.

Hi, absolutely love what you've done, but there are a few sound files that weren't converted from .ogg to .mp3 - is there a chance you could add those to the .zip file for us?

Talos Island - New Sparta
Terra Volta - Coroman Manufacturing
Brickstown - Dark Waters
Brickstown - The Crescent

Thank you very much!  :)

I've got the latest download and while it does have apparently all the music files, I'm only seeing a couple sound effects, mostly the mission completes.  I see no ding or level up sound effect and certainly none of the power or various SFX from the game.

You mean this one (http://www.amazon.com/City-Heroes-Going-Rogue-Soundtrack/dp/B003XKN70E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1378746092&sr=8-1&keywords=going+rogue+soundtrack)? AFAIK, it's the only official soundtrack released of music from City of Heroes.

If you were planning to ask about including that music in this compilation, I'd strongly suggest against it. Since it's specifically being made available for sale, distributing it for free would deprive Jason Graves of any compensation to which he's entitled. </soapbox>  Sorry, I'm a big supporter of personal IP rights when it comes to music and performances.

With all due respect, I fail to see then the distinction between the music from the game ( and it's IP rights) and the music from the soundtrack (especially since I'm pretty sure it's more or less the same music) if we're to argue for it one way, it should be the same for the other, BUT thank you for the link. The reason I even asked was because I couldn't find the amazon listing for the digital copy of the sound track for the longest time after the game went down and this helps me loads. I honestly thought they were lost for good.

Please don't turn this thread into a copyright/IP/law discussion.

:-\

No one would really be downloading any of this at all.. if we could, y'know...

...actually play the game.

AFAIK, the Going Rogue music was done professionally, while all the other game music was just done "in-house", though I'm not sure.

Never been one much to learn about the music, just that it's all very nice.

I agree, sorry. Just thought it was hypocritical. I only asked cause I thought all legit ways of getting the soundtrack were ripped down by NCSoft after they took everything else away from us. I went to buy it with the credit I had on amazon, digitally, and it was gone. I never thought to really look for a physical copy since I only wanted it digital at the time and figured if that was gone so was everything else, though looking closer at the current amazon listing, it seems a little dubious. And I wouldn't have asked it be added to the zip, but ask for it for myself, but this works just as well, I just hope it actually somehow goes TO the artist. I just want to hold onto as much of this important part of me as I can. Sorry.

Preface: I'm just sharing my thoughts here, and not intending for this to begin a discussion of IP/copyright law. That's been done elsewhere about other stuff. IANAL, and all that.

I didn't mean to sound hypocritical with my statements, but I understand how they could be seen that way. The difference in my eyes is that the music that was included with the game files is fair to distribute freely. Since NCsoft has deprived us of the ability to listen to it by its intended method (by playing the game), no one is being harmed by us sharing that which was available at no cost in the first place.

The CD of the Going Rogue OST, again, in my opinion, doesn't meet those criteria because it contains music that wasn't specifically included with the game files (except for the title track, which was the music for the Praetorian loading screen). That's why I feel those tracks should be obtained through their intended outlet. (Now, if the music was not available anywhere, I'd likely still argue that we shouldn't share it because it was not free the last time it was available. Fortunately, that's not currently the case.)

You're right, though, that it seems strange the physical CD would still be available even though the digital tracks are not. However, despite the CD being "burn on demand," I'm confident that it's a legitimate offer and Jason would get a percentage of the sales. It's great that it's still available, so I'd jump on it while you can. You can also check out his artist store (http://www.amazon.com/Jason-Graves/e/B000APMH6K/ref=ac_dtp_sa_nc_link) for MP3 downloads of his other game soundtracks, including Tomb Raider and the Dead Space series.

check to see if they got actual permission first before following. You'd be surprise at the type of permissions one can get by simply asking.

And ever notice that Amazon, Netflicks, and the likes have digital versions of some stuff only and hard copy of some stuff only and for some stuff both? It's all part of agreements for using and selling that particular material. Thus it's very possible for all the digital stuff to be taken down due to license expire in the agreement but there is the hard copies still available which may or may not be used with actual permission.

If the copying get out of hand, just because they havent taken action against that person yet, if they dotn have permission, doesnt mean they cant. When it gets down into more illegal copying (if it is so) they could be liable for facilitating illegal copying and on top of making money off of it. And longer they the more potential CDs are sold, the more they can claim in dollars someone else made off their work.

If it's unsure if it's infact offical and legit, me personally I wouldnt bother with it even though the buyer probably wont have much if any risk and that would end up a fight between Amazon, the seller and the owner of the rights assuming people that buy it dont turn around and start distribute it themselves.

Hey thanks. Let me know if it turns out to be legit. My worst fear with ordering it is that it's like some other stuff I've seen on Amazon, like seasons of Sailor Moon, where it turns out to be all boot leg. Not only is that illegal but extra bad if someone is trying to make a profit off of someone elses work. I grew up in a world where sharing music with friends on cassette tapes was not only ok but encouraged, only difference now is it's easier, so I was only asking for myself (not for it to be added to the compilation). If it turns out to be legit, i'll happily buy my own copy, if not, it's one thing to ask for a copy from others but to just get the same thing while helping someone else turn a profit on something he didn't earn seems even worse and more insulting to the original artist.

I just ordered one so we'll find out if it is really is still available.

I have no idea if the 'Jason Graves' store on Amazon actually belongs to him.

That, to me, would be a reputable store with permission to sell it. If it they really are real copies sold by amazon that just happen to be printed as needed, that's awesome, but if instead it's just someone else who already had it making burned copies for a profit, pocketing all the money, then I wouldn't consider that legit. I truly hope it's the first one.

As a stat point, I bought the Going Rogue soundtrack from Amazon when it was first released.  It was talked up on the old forums when Going Rogue launched.  I never heard of Jason Graves before this CD and to tell the truth, I found the music just "ok", so never paid attention to who made it.  Much to my surprise, when I looked at the CD info later on, the Jason Graves name was somehow vaguely familiar.  It turns out that one of the videos I recorded of a NYComicCon panel of game industry musicians (http://youtu.be/5srvKWJF-s4) included a Jason Graves (4th seated guy).  There's no mention of City of Heroes, though.  However, you do get to learn a bit about him, along with the other guys.

My copy of the "City of Heroes Going Rogue - Original Soundtrack" arrived today.

It's just what I expected.  A shrink wrapped jewel case with a CD inside.  The CD cover artwork is the same from the advertisement on Amazon.  There are no actual liner notes -- just a list of tracks with the duration of each.  The disc is not a CD-R and looks almost like any other mass manufactured CD.  If  you look closely, it appears there is a different in coloring about half way up the diameter of the disc but that could be my imagination.

I've purchased several manufactured on demand discs from Amazon and the Time Warner store.  Quality wise, it looks about the same as all the others.

It's true that professional packaging doesn't mean that the seller has the actual rights to the product.  I'm going to let Amazon do the worrying about that for me.  Because if you think about it, you can never be sure who really owns the rights to anything you buy.

true. No telling who owns what on a site like that.

The different coloring may not be a figment of your imagination. It may be the actual point where the data stops on burned CDs. (One of the reasons it's called "burning")

I don't think manufactured on demand process uses quite the same process as home burning.   The actual data layer looks much more like a pressed CD/DVD.

I'm trying not to sound too self-important or anything about this, but is there any way this can get stickied or at least put somewhere easy for people to access? if it falls off the page, newer people might miss out on it.

Where in the archive can I find the piece that starts at about the 3 minute mark of this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfQoD0_YrTc (might be hard to hear because the guy has his music turned low compared to the SFX)?

Hmmm... download my Cutscene Music pack, here (these are .OGGs):

https://www.sugarsync.com/pf/D0133125_936_10032049

I think what you are looking for is "i24_Hero_CalvinScott_Death_CutsceneMusic_01.ogg" (sounds closest) or "Cutscene_CalvinScott_Music.ogg"

Hope this helps.

Firstly just want to say thanks very much for putting the entire Soundtrack up in mp3 form much appreciated :)
Also i was just wondering whether or not anyone knows where to find the City of Villains character creation music? Although i must clarify, I don't mean the Title screen track, this was a seperate track that was only when you created a villain, I've been on the lookout for years and not found it. The paragon wiki has lately listed it, but it also says its to big to upload because its 12mb.

This video contains the track I mean it starts at the 10second mark-ish.

Anyway, thanks for your time, and double thanks for uploading the soundtrack :)

Erm.. there's no video in your post...

Also.

If someone has a Issue 6 through Issue 16 Villains client, I can tell you how to get the song out of those files.

Sadly though, I myself only have the Beta Client, which definitely does not have the song in question.

Interestingly, the "Version 2" for Heroes and Villains on the wiki (noted as being used for Issues 17-20 for each) is essentially the same.

I believe this video has the music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOVZQtq5zo4

It's different from the title screen music, and I can't seem to find it on the wiki, although I swear I heard it earlier when looking through the files...

Edit: The wiki also doesn't appear to have character creation music from Issue 20 on...

Edit 2: I think I have the CoV disc. Would that enable me to grab the file?

Oh, my.

Watching that video just jogged my memory, Felderburg!

Nostalgia.

You're in luck.

I found it in an old archive I packed for someone who wanted it before!

I had a classic client on my computer for a while, though I deleted it a while back for HD space.

How nice, uploaded to my dropbox and it even seems to have an in-browser music player.

Here it is (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/53520447/V_Music2_loop.ogg). (OGG file)

I also have "V_Music1_Loop" if you're interested. Which is also in OGG.

:D

Yes, they're the same style of sustained note, but on a different pitch. Mighty boring, I must say.

Right, that's the V_Music2_loop.ogg file that's too large to upload directly to the wiki with the current settings. The talk page now has a link to Arachnion's Dropbox file.

The character creation music from Issue 20 on is the same as the title screen music. It just keeps looping through the whole process. I've added a note about it now for clarification.

Title: Re: CoX Music and SFX Compilation(Now in MP3!)

I've finished adding a new section to the music article for mission music (http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Music#Mission_Music). This includes music used for boss fights, incarnate trial backgrounds, and general mood music that played at mission entrances. Several of these were unused in-game, so they'll provide some interesting new listening for most people.

Also, there's a new track added to the obscure music section (http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Music#Easter_Eggs_and_Obscure_Music) that was used for background music in promotional videos.

Edit: There are also some tracks in the cutscene section (http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Music#Cutscene_Music) that used to only have music-only versions . SFX-only versions and combined versions have now been added for those tracks.

It's gotten more attention, recently, I believe.  I actually did manage to download it again the other week (wanted a copy for my work PC), but it looks like interest has spiked again.  He might have to pay for greater bandwidth access, however, and if so we should chip in a few bucks for that.  I'd certainly contribute to that effort.

You could see if the user that uploaded it can share the parent folder in dropbox, and then you should be able to use the dropbox web interface to just add it to your own droppbox.

Of course, I'm not sure why it says it'll take a year... I right clicked the link, and clicked "save link as..." and it downloaded in 15 seconds. On an old computer here at work. It's only 12MB, which is much smaller than some CoH patches, so assuming you have a computer that was able to play CoH, it shouldn't be an issue.

The 'tell received' beep
The level up sound
The sound of a Malta Titan charging up its lazors

Quick question, what is the license for these sound files?

free for personal use? free for academic use? do I need to cite the author? who do I cite?
Title: Re: CoX Music and SFX Compilation(Now in MP3!)
Post by: Felderburg on June 06, 2015, 10:08:52 PM
I know that some of the original game music was pulled from one of those cheap one-time-fee license places (so you may hear riffs in other media) and if you could find it and pay that website, you'd be set for some music. Going Rogue had a regular composer, though, who created music specifically for the GR expansion, so I would imagine you can't use it for anything other than listening to yourself. The wiki is not very helpful, unfortunately: http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Music

I would suspect you can probably use it in any context where you're not making big bucks. If you were to use it as a soundtrack to an academic presentation, probably not a big deal. If you were to use it for a game you made for a class, and that game later went on to be for sale in the real world, you could get in trouble.

Thanks!!!

Edit: You can use 7-Zip (http://www.7-zip.org/) on Windows to open .rar archive files.  It also handles ZIP files much faster than the native compression/decompression tools on Windows.

I see 500 files in the music folder. I downloaded one and it plays fine.

Does anyone have the Mayhem Missions theme music? I've got all the others thanks to AshenFury but I can't find the actual theme piece for them here or on the paragonwiki site

At the moment, you can download 5 tracks from "City of Heroes - Going Rogue" soundtrack at:

http://www.jasongraves.com/music/

Look in the right hand column, second game down.

The CD has 13 tracks.  You can listen to all the tracks on Sound Cloud at:

https://soundcloud.com/jasongraves/sets/city-of-heroes-going-rogue

I'm probably missing something obvious, but I can't find the /tell message notification in the archive.  Can someone help me out?

I still wouldn't mind knowing where it is in the archive, but I've found this file here as well:http://vocaroo.com/i/s0v5AcjycaWh

If you're interested in listening to the "Going Rogue" soundtrack at Sound Cloud, you should do that as soon as possible.   It looks like Sound Cloud doesn't have much of a future.

But still looking for the /tell sound.

Look for the file named "type".

If you can't find it in the archive, you can get the .ogg file here:

This may have been asked / answered before, but what are the origins of some of the sounds? I know some music was pulled from some sort of licensed package or something. I ask because you can distinctly hear some CoH jetpack noises when jetpacks are used at ~1:20 of this The Batman video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEEZLNBqOOs

I have been trying different avenues on this...and I get an error about preview.  When I continue I try to download...it warns about the file size...and then balks about permission needed to access the download...

I would love to have these...can someone steer me to a place to get these?

The music is still here:

https://spideroak.com/browse/share/COX_DEMOS/2000/RECORDS_COX/Music-SFX/

I tried it and it was a bit slow to start the download, but it is there.

Quick question: What's the sound combination for the standard Arachnos Bane Spider Mace Beam Shot? I've been looking for it for ages and I can't seem to find it in the pack.

In the video I will link below, it sounds a lot like one of the standard energy blast type sounds. The effects explicitly labeled with arachnos or mace or bane seem to be the more unique attacks from the weapon. Is the sound in the video what you're looking for? https://youtu.be/4hBcu2lyWbA?t=98 (should start at 1:38)

I'm trying to find the Villain Character Creator (2) music, but the link to Arachnion's Dropbox leads to a 404 error. Anyone else know how to get it?

I've downloaded that one, the one from the other link, and even from the Google Drive. The track is V_Music2_loop, it's the one too big to fit on paragonwiki, and I can't seem to find it anywhere

That's in this drive folder: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BzbPxewaK5DgNG5LSVc4M0tPZG8

Note that I'm at work with muted speakers, so while I can verify that the progress bar moves, I can't verify that it actually plays :p

It works.

Now that folks (including me) are playing CoH again, I wanted to grab some sound files and am so glad I found this thread and the links still work. :-)  I'm resurrecting this discussion a bit, tho, because I'm still having trouble finding three SFX files: Clue Found, Inspiration, and Enhancement sounds. I've been scouring and poking around to no avail (unless I'm really dense and keep missing them!). I'm also on a Mac so digging into the actual resource files is proving challenging with this new set-up. Any help (and links) would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Not sure about the others, but this is the sound that plays when you find a clue.  (I have it set as my default notification on my phone.)

That's it - Thanks very much! (I wasn't having success searching for SFX .ogg files that aren't linked to any page such as this one)

I have the whole sound directory extracted on my hard drive.  It's just a matter of knowing which file goes with which power.  Gotta love the PIGG viewers.

I would love the pigg viewers more if they weren't so buggy.  Maybe I was using an outdated one though.  It's been awhile.
