Title: Movie Quotes
Post by: Heroette on February 21, 2013, 09:13:15 PM
One thing I loved about COH is that on the Justice United chat channel, movie quotes would come up and before you know it, we had like 20 quotes going on, usually all from the same movie (but not always).  So, I am going to start this trend here.  If you all want to play, that would be great.  No rules, just quote movies (and insert photos if you want).  Ok, here we go.  One of my favorite quotes is:

"God is in the Rain".

Do you know what movie its from?  And you don't even have to guess, just if you want to.  Just start with another quote if you want.

That's from V for Vendetta, I believe.

*thinks about it*  ...cool game :)

Ooh, I got one! How about:

"It can't rain all the time."

Hmmm, I don't know that one.  Anyone?   (And yes, the previous one is from "V for Vendetta").

Can't say, never saw Bowfinger, But it's not the film I was thinking of.

Hint: Peter O'Toole

Okay yeah, the Bowfinger quote I was thinking of is "We're trying to make a movie here, not a film!"

Still workin' on it, but I don't know many Peter O'Toole films. Sadly.

Neo from the Matrix? When he was setting in the chair 'learning kung fu' I think.

That's not the movie I was thinking of.

I think that "the operator" in the matrix (forgot his name) during the downloading of the Kung Fu asked him if he wanted more and Neo said "Hell Yeah" or something like that.

the clue is "vampires".

P.S.  This is Heroette (under an old account name).

Now that one is from Back to the Future (love those!)

How about:

Well, I think that was from City Slickers....

(Yogi Berra originally said, “We're lost, but we're making good time”)

Next:
"Where the hell are they?!

Actually, my quote was from "Titanic" (see, don't judge me - lol).  Its when Bruce Ismay asks the captain to speed up.

Not sure about the Circle K one though.

Hey I liked Titanic just fine.

Same. The original VHS didnt survive them ove so I bought the two disc dvd then something happened to it. Then I bought another set, gave it away after a few weeks to someone who needed it more, then bought one last DVD set. Got old and worn over time, and then eventually bought a digital copy with a back up on a computer that is never ever hooked up to the internet.

I got my special edition dvd and when I don't have anything else I want to watch, I put that on.  But when it came out, I didn't see it in the theatre (just thought the previews looked stupid).  Then I borrowed a vhs copy from a friend and I realized its a really good movie (and yes, Jack dying made me cry).  When they did the re-release last year I saw it in the 3-D version at the theatre and that was a totally different experience.  I coerced my son to go with me and he was really stressed out at the sinking (trapped) scenes and complained to me that I made him go.  LOL.  But I enjoyed it.

Anyway, back to our regularly scheduled program.....Movie Quotes (and I don't know the last one above).

Oh yeah, that's be Starship Troopers.  I like that movie, and yes, I know it's way different from the book, but that's ok.  They're both good! [Would you like to know more?]

I don't know Healix's either, and I also don't wanna be That Guy and google it and cheat.

I will leave you with this, however:

I gotta say a few things first before i play. 1. Yay for the return of Heroette!!! (it's me, @kristoff von gelmini) 2. I'd gotten all sad and despondent and mostly wandered away, but I have a new tune in my heart and it's something like "I Want My MTV" by Dire Straits only with CoH instead.  3. Healer to Healer, I blame Healix for bringing me back to Titan rather than the "grown-up" stuff I was working on (it was way less fun.)  Things I learned from City of Heroes included which AT to blame; too often people tried to pin it on the Tanker or anything other than their lack of teamwork, but in this case I'm gonna blame the DEF!!!!   ;)  On to play time.... Game in!!

Is that from Bowling for Columbine?   (I guess I could google it etc, but that feels like cheating - OR, LOL, am I missing the point?)

I don't have a clue re: the movie line quote that precedes my post here; however, overall I want once again to Thank Heroette!!  (She was always one of my favorite Justice heroes) and otherwise note that this thread is the Stuff Dreams Are Made Of....   (I bet that's one's too easy.)

Um, I am going to guess this is from the movie Quest for Fire - but I'll admit it's just a guess and only because it came up on conversation with a friend the other night who mentioned it was a favorite movie; otherwise I probably wouldn't even think of it at all.

*steps sideways, and mostly avoids a dreadful, off-color pun about "making water"* then clicks Preview and Post before digging myself in any deeper in the kimchee.

Dear(est) Heroette: Hello!!!  (I always love seeing you here on Titan and shall always treasure our last dance underneath Atlas with Penelope Pistol and Capt Aqua!)  :)

Okay, more clues, 'cause this is NOT a mainstream movie; it's probably described as intellectual, art-house fare.  It starred Sam Waterston, Liv Ullman, John Heard and Ione Sky.  It has NO gun fights, explosions, or chase scenes.   It takes place (mostly) on an island off the coast of France, and the "action" is mostly three adults talking.  (I can already imagine the collective groans from the gallery.)  However, this is really a *FABULOUS* film and I recommend it very, very much!!     8)

Nay, ye landlubber. But it is about pirates :)

Oh and Ione Skye is in one of my all-time favorite movies too. Not the one you mentioned though, this one's called "Dream for an Insomniac". It has a little bit of artsy flair in its own right; it starts out black and white, until this guy comes into her uncle's coffee shop and she sees his eyes, then the whole movie turns to color. I always liked that scene.

Okay, well....  *queues Buzzer/Gong sound*  I don't know which or what movie your quote is from, Triplash.   ???

Dream for an Insomniac, just the title alone sounds intriguing, so I'll try to check that one out!   :)

And, in case we have any other player-charactercontestants (i.e., I haven't seen Healix on the last couple of days... ) I shall re-iterate my challenge:
OBSCURE MOVIE QUOTES for $500, Alex.....
"See, my point isn't to condemn Descartes' thinking.  It's simply to recognize its limitations.  It might have been extremely useful to perceive the world as a machine for 300 years but that perception today is not only inaccurate, it's actually harmful.  We need a new vision of the world."

(Good luck and this is from one of my all-time favorite movies (1990) and it's neither related to gaming nor action-adventure.  More hints later, if requested, and there are quite a number above as well.)   ;)

"My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. My childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When I was insolent I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds. Pretty standard really. At the age of twelve, I received my first scribe. At the age of fourteen, a Zoroastrian named Vilma ritualistically shaved my testicles. There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum, it's breathtaking, I suggest you try it."

ROFL!!!!!  I know the voice of Dr. EVIL when I hear it!!  Thanks, Healix!!!   (sorry i am not good at thinking these up, at least not today.)  Party on!!!!

Modified just now to note:  Oops! I just realized while I have identified the speech and the character, I did NOT identify the movie and (eep!) I am not certain which of the Austin Powers films this is from, but I think it's the second one, where Dr. Evil makes this speech while in group with Scott.  So if I'm correct that makes it either (now guessing) Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery or Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.  Of course I could be entirely wrong altogether, and perhaps this speech was given in Goldmember (at least I'm pretty sure that was the title of the 3rd movie.)  Sorry, I don't recall the title of the second Austin Powers movie but that's my guess.   *waits for another Titan Network forums player to give the correct answer more succinctly, ideally one also good at coming up with movie quotes.*

Hi Heroette!!!!!  (((((HUGS)))))

DIGRESSION
Now I just need to think of a kewl name for myself.  I mean using my RL name is soooo pedestrian or even Not Done!  Hmm, I've been considering changing my user name to SnakeBite Kit #12 for a while, or perhaps should use my old global @kristoff von gelmini - but @kristoff is too formal and there is often some confusion over which "Kris" is being addressed or even what gender people like Kris and Pat are etc....  ;)  [/end digression]

Okay I'll come up with a Line from a Movie to keep the ball rolling:

"Just a spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down."  (Hint: this film was made and released in the 20th Century, not the 21st)  Good luck!

And why don't you use Kristoff?  I know you as that anyway - lol.  But the reason I have scalebeast is my son first got the game and at one point we both had accounts and when he quit playing, I kept his going instead of mine.  I would rather go around as Heroette.  Can you change your global here?  I guess I can see if there is an option.

And oh yeah.  "Mary Poppins".

There may be a way to change it, but I just tried account and profile settings and it didn't look like there was an easy way for me to do this.  When I first started posting here I had @Kristoff von Gelmini as the tag line under my avatar/userpic but now it's a reference to a Boris Pasternak quote that suits me, only it's too many characters and I don't want to lose the one by Gandhi because that's one of my all-time fave quotes.  I guess @Kristoff will have to be my secret name, known but to a few confidantes; whereas, here and on CoH Faces my identity as John Robey is fairly well established.  Heck, I have a birth certificate and driver's license and everything that will attest to that being my name.  *Peels off rubber face mask to reveal that under the mask is actor Peter Graves or another of the IMF team!!*  Queue theme music:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWGeRgFa-hI   (Man, I really need to lighten up and try to get more serious about having fun!)  Hasta La Vista, Titans!!

Title: Re: Movie Quotes

Okay, here's another big (BIG) hint, since I was certain Heroette (who cleverly disguises herself as Scalebeast on Titan) would guess/know the answer to my movie quote, and Triplash, yeah, if you were born in the late 1970's I can imagine you might have either missed this film or else not have it locked into memory as I do.  (I tend to do better on trivia and mainstream cultural history from 1960-1990-ish since everything after 1995 for me is really modern even if that was nearly 20 years ago.)

Anyhow, the reason I remember this so vividly is that when I was a child of about 6 or 7 my parents took me to the moviehouse to see this highly political, yet at times tender, and in other parts highly satirical film, filled with social commentary, which comes out in the songs and sometimes the dances.  Yeah, I know, you're probably wondering what was wrong with my parents that they'd take a young kid like me to see such a film, but what can I say, they were the contemporaries of beatniks and hippies, even if that wasn't their lifestyle.  Given that to my amazement I've stumped two Titans, I'll give the answer but one of you shall have to come up with the next Movie quote since the next one I have in mind is even more challenging than this.

Here's the URL to the youtube video that contains the entire song these lyrics are from as well as some opening dialogue.  Enjoy!  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kvk1NZDFvZU&feature=relmfu  In fact, I'd recommend this movie to anyone who hasn't seen it in full.    ;D

Dear Triplash, just FYI, you're killing me!!!!  ROFLMAO!!!!!!    *thump*   *thud*
Yeah, back when you were born we had these things called "8-tracks" and before that we had something called "reel to reel"-which was very like a cassette tape only much larger, like miniaturization in reverse.  Yeah, there's no point in trying to lie to you about VHS and beta since I can see you are savvy to us Old Folks.  By the way, have I shown you my collection of smoke and mirrors?  Here, let me conjure up for your entertainment the head of the Egyptian deity Anubis via hand shadow silhouette and perform Briana's immortal "Anubis approves.  Anubis disapproves.  Anubis blows chunks." routine.  Note: this is really amusing if one is in one's 20's and ideally has been up without sleep for a good long while such that with sleep deprivation the natural fatigue poisons are really coursing.  All Night Fandom rules!!!!!  Take back the night!!!! And make it Fun & Silly!!!!   ;D

*stares at the 8-track in a slack-jawed mixture of wonder and terror* It's... it's so old. *glances around nervously, scared a dinosaur is about to attack him and steal back its stuff*

I've heard a little bit about how things used to work back then. *turns the 8-track over and over in his hands, looking for something* Where do you shovel in the coal? ???

Given that to my amazement I've stumped two Titans, I'll give the answer but one of you shall have to come up with the next Movie quote since the next one I have in mind is even more challenging than this.

ROFL!!!!!!!  Triplash, your online antics have me in stitches!   A friend, to her amazement, once had to explain to me the meaning of what "the wrong side of the (railroad) tracks" meant.  It's almost as if everyone over-generalized and expected others to know intuitively (by osmosis?) to know what they know.  Naw, kid, no reason to be afraid.  I've already wiped all the Mummy dust off that 8-track.  Just do us all a favor, and don't play it backwards -- it doesn't summon anything; it merely sounds awful!  Oh, and the coal goes in the back.  Thanks for asking!   ;)

Yep, Healix, that was one of Geoffrey's lines from Lion in Winter.

Ooh, I got one. This is from one of my favorite movies ev-arrr.

"It's the same thing your whole life: Clean up your room. Stand up straight. Pick up your feet. Take it like a man. Be nice to your sister. Don't mix beer and wine, ever. Oh yeah: Don't drive on the railroad track."

It was "don't drive on the railroad track" that gave it away.

"Groundhog Day"  (great movie!).

Let's see now....

"Well, how are you going to know if you can beat my straight flush?"  (sinister voice).

Ok, I know I am not good at these but I think (or else simply feel like this should be) a line delivered by Ian McKlellen as Magneto in, um, one of the X-Men movies!  (Okay, even I admit that was tremendously lame, as well as a wild guess.)  *stands politely waiting for the next contestant to buzz in likely with the correct answer.*   :D

O>O i mean  8)  That's way cool, errr KEWL, which is why I have no clue what film it is from, however I am going to guess:  Could it be the Scoobie-Doo movie?   :D

In the likely event I am wrong I've been itchin' to post this easy one for a while now.  Yeah, I know it's too easy and yet the line is so classic, the film so perfect; hint: it's the second film in a series that makes the first film look like dress rehearsal (imo).  So with all that build up here is the Quote:

"Get away from her, you [PANNCAKE]!!!!!!"  (quote modified a smidge so as to not offend current prevailing standards of decency and delicate sensibility.)

Remember also, Titans, that probably my guess was wrong, so there is still @JWBullfrog's jiucy quote to identify!!!!   Good luck, one and all!!   :)

*does the Brony Happy Dance and greets Healix!!!!*  I think this is from The Lost Boys probably by Edgar Frogg.  (Of course I could be wrong.)  Also, I have never seen "John Dies At The End" so I'll have to make sure to see it, Healix, if you recommend it.

Okay so this isn't a serious guess, but I'll say it anyway cause I'm me. ;)  Whenever I can't figure out one of these quotes I'm always tempted to say "Mariah Carey in Glitter!"   Honestly, go back and look at some of the quotes we've had... "Mariah Carey in Glitter!" is an awesome answer ;D

From what I can tell, there were a ton of great quotes in that movie. I mean just look at the last few that we've used here:

((SPOILER ALERT: This may give away the plot of the movie Glitter. I say 'may' because, I honestly have no idea. It's not like anyone's ever watched it who can tell us what really happened.))

Those lines alone tell a story. A touching, funny, badass, really weird story. I'm still trying to process it all, but apparently it's about a little girl who overcomes an extraordinarily difficult childhood and rebels against her ancient society's secretive ways. Eventually she goes on to become the first assassin in the world to ever wear boob glitter and hold sold-out stage performances.    ...and something about radish soup.

I have to confess, Triplash, I like the way your mind works!  Yes, the radish soup is clearly a red herring, added simply to make things more challenging.  As a gay man, I believe I can be forgiven (or at least have it be understandable) my failure to notice boob glitter--I mean, at some level I should notice, and yet...

As to the touching, funny, badass, really weird story you describe (*sounds buzzer for the WIN!*) I instantly recognized the movie you (and our collective quotes) are describing as KILL BILL, Volumes I and II.  Too bad my surmise has nothing to do with the current Movie Quote, for which I am clueless and without answer.  Hmmm, where is that cheesy grin winky icon?   ;) :D

Come on General, you've lost men, I've lost men, but you - you, you *can't* do this! What, what if they don't even want the sheik, have you considered that? What if what they really want is for us to herd our children into stadiums like we're doing? And put soldiers on the street and have Americans looking over their shoulders? Bend the law, shred the Constitution just a little bit? Because if we torture him, General, we do that and everything we have fought, and bled, and died for is over. And they've won. Actually, it goes thusly:

"Changed the conditions of the test," replied Kirk, with a mischievious look at Saavik.  "Got a commendation for 'original thinking.'  I don't like to lose."
Saavik queried, "So you've never face that situation.  Faced death."

For added comedy value, imagine those lines coming from Lord Recluse. :D

EDIT: Oh - I didn't mean for the above to be my quote, obviously. Cause that's from the same film. ^_^

Here's my quote:

"These things you say we will have, we already have."

"That's true. I ain't promising you nothing extra. I'm just giving you life and you're giving me life. And I'm saying that men can live together without butchering one another."

"It's sad that governments are chiefed by the double tongues. There is iron in your words of death for all Comanche to see, and so there is iron in your words of life. No signed paper can hold the iron. It must come from men. The words of Ten Bears carries the same iron of life and death. It is good that warriors such as we meet in the struggle of life... or death. It shall be life."

Nope. It is a comedy, but nothing like South Park.

It looks like a cheesy old scifi b-movie from the 50s or 60s but it was only made a few years ago. The same director and group of actors have made four different movies like that now, and I love them ;D

I think it's from Tron Legacy. If I remember correctly it is related to a Chinese proverb/saying.

Somehow I don't think so. I don't remember the line from the movie. But that's not 100% foolproof. It just seems that it's not something Kevin Smith would write. And I can't exactly say why.

"We're left with the retards."  Hm. If it IS from Dogma, seems it would've been said by the demon Azrael. But ehhhh... (waves hand back and forth)

On a personal note: I haven't the least interest in the vast majority of zombie movies/TV out there, so it puzzles me that I like the Resident Evil series enough that I watch them when they're on. I can't quite put my finger on what makes them different. As near as I can tell, it could be a combination of Alice's superhero-like abilities, and the idea that there's actually someone responsible for the zombie apocalypse, and she's going after them. I don't care for gorefests (or horror in general, actually), so the fact that they get my attention is a real bewilderment.

One of the early James Bond movies, definitely. No idea as to which, though. I'll have to leave it to someone more immersed in the series to give a title. "Little Nelly" is that sweet little autogyro. Man, I've wanted one of those!

My favorite all-time version is Scrooge, starring Alastair Sim. It was made in 1951...here is the complete version for those who have never seen it.

Scrooge (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MP2HnAXHHqg) (black and white, original...dark and brooding as was intended)

Scrooge (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IY9gVOZ1xhA) (colorized version... I REALLY like this one. It is lush and adds depth, since we see things in color in real life.)

Close, but atually it's the one with Emma Emma Stone (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZtMR9PZcmI).

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. Lots of people rank this as the best Trek film, but I always hated that Trek got preachy about social issues. I vastly prefer The Wrath of Khan; terrific Trek without the moral superiority. Just my two cents' worth.

ST 4 does lay it on a bit thick in places. Fortunately "saving the whales" is an extremely easy sell and I don't think they go too far. I enjoyed it at any rate.

And I still remember the end of the film when they did the reveal of the "new" Enterprise. I was in one of the first day runs and I'm sure there were a LOT of Trekkies in there with me, but THE WHOLE DAMN THEATER STOOD UP AND CHEERED!

USS Enterprise
NCC-1701-A

"My friends. We've come home."

(And there must've been at least a dozen damn onion ninjas working through the crowd too. Damnit.)

There's no doubt that ST 4 is a hell of a crowd pleaser.

Still - I do agree that STII The Wrath of Khan is pretty much STILL the perfect Star Trek film.

Although the even numbered films are considered to be better, what is this rubbish about IV?  Since when is Wrath of Khan not considered to be the best Star Trek film by trekkies?  Or is this just all of the 10 year-olds that got a field trip to see it after watching Voyage of the Mimi at school and living through the "save the whales" campaign now grown up?  "Rubbish" I write, "Rubbish!!" Here's another from the same, which happens to be one of my favorite movies to quote

"We're more of the love, blood, and rhetoric school. Well, we can do you blood and love without the rhetoric, and we can do you blood and rhetoric without the love, and we can do you all three concurrent or consecutive. But we can't give you love and rhetoric without the blood. Blood is compulsory. They're all blood, you see."

Here's a great one:

It begins with the king as a boy, having to spend the night alone in the forest to prove his courage so he can become king.

Now while he is spending the night alone he's visited by a sacred vision. Out of the fire appears the holy grail, symbol of God's divine grace. And a voice said to the boy, "You shall be keeper of the grail so that it may heal the hearts of men." But the boy was blinded by greater visions of a life filled with power and glory and beauty. And in this state of radical amazement he felt for a brief moment not like a boy, but invincible, like God, so he reached into the fire to take the grail, and the grail vanished, leaving him with his hand in the fire to be terribly wounded. Now as this boy grew older, his wound grew deeper. Until one day, life for him lost its reason. He had no faith in any man, not even himself. He couldn't love or feel loved. He was sick with experience. He began to die.

One day a fool wandered into the castle and found the king alone. And being a fool, he was simple minded, he didn't see a king. He only saw a man alone and in pain. And he asked the king, "What ails you friend?" The king replied, "I'm thirsty. I need some water to cool my throat". So the fool took a cup from beside his bed, filled it with water and handed it to the king.

As the king began to drink, he realized his wound was healed. He looked in his hands and there was the holy grail, that which he sought all of his life. And he turned to the fool and said with amazement, "How can you find that which my brightest and bravest could not?" And the fool replied, "I don't know. I only knew that you were thirsty."

(Yes, it's a monologue and not a short quote, but you really NEED the whole thing in order to have a chance at recognizing the source. Plus it's a great story.)

It is a great story.  I have no idea where it is from though.

While I don't know this specific quote, it reminds me of something M. Bison said in Street Fighter:

"For you, the day Bison graced your village was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday."

Great movie... but the quote is a bit misleading. Sounds a little too much like Yoda or Mr. Miyagi ;)

"Do you see any Teletubbies here? Do you see a slender plastic tag clipped to my shirt with my name on it? Did you see a little Asian child with a blank expression sitting outside in a mechanical helicopter that shakes when you put quarters in it? No? Well, that's what you'd see at a toy store. And you must think you you're in a toy store, because you're here shopping for an infant named Jeb. Now, one of us has made a gross error, and wasted the other person's valuable time. This is an art gallery, my friend, and this is a piece of art."

EDIT: Whoops! Elijah is NOT speaking to David Dunn in the above quote - he's speaking to a customer (unnamed) who was seriously going to buy that as a "Poster" for his son who'd likely tear it up.

Well I have to go to extremes sometimes to stump people here. You guys are GOOD. :)

Besides - you gotta admit, it's a real classic. And as Sci-Fi films go, it's one of the ones you really SHOULD see.

Title: Re: Movie Quotes
Post by: Atlantea on June 14, 2015, 10:19:40 AM
Well it's been a week. So here's the answer:

The following quote...

"How ironic that a simple scholar, with no ambition, beyond a modest measure of seclusion, should out of the clear sky, find himself besieged by an army of fellow creatures, all grimly determined to be of service."

...is from the 1956 Sci-Fi classic Forbidden Planet. It was uttered by Walter Pidgeon's "Morbius".

Nice bit of trivia from IMDB: Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry has been quoted as saying that this film was a major inspiration for that series. 1701, which is the serial number of the Starship Enterprise, allegedly comes from the clock mark 17:01 when the C57D enters orbit around Altair IV.

Alright then, next quote:

"Look! There's a rhythmic ceremonial ritual coming up."

"I've passed the point of no return. Do you know what that is? That's the point in a journey where it's longer to go back to the beginning. It's like when those astronauts got in trouble. I don't know, somebody messed up, and they had to get them back to Earth. But they had passed the point of no return. They were on the other side of the moon and were out of contact for like hours. Everybody waited to see if a bunch of dead guys in a can would pop out the other side. Well, that's me. I'm on the other side of the moon now and everybody is going to have to wait until I pop out."

That is a quote from the character Johnny Cage, from Mortal Kombat.
