Lawdy...

These Rom mishes...

Make them stop.......

What's even worse is my MMO super power for breaking mishes. I ran this mish that was already boring me, twice, last night before giving up on it as I waved goodbye to the Final Boss after 10 billion steps to get to him, who, stared dumbly at me behind his glass holding tube that never released him.

Normally I only have to rerun mishes Once after I break them..  : /

I wouldn't stick with it if there was any decent alternative for low level leveling and I want a level 60 Rom ship. I think I can't even get Patrol mishes yet, Assuming Roms even get those.

Ah well, back to the mines! *kawhip!*

I just couldn't do it..

Xev got some playtime instead. Sticking with tactical/escorts has paid off for me finally.

I did one Rom random map Space battle thing to ding T'hee 35 so now he can move on to Cardassian mishes. I kinda want to just Space out with him, though. I'm kinda mished out. Seriously, I break like 1 out of 3 mishes and have to rerun them and I wasn't really enjoying the mishes all that much to begin with. I was having a lot of fun Fed mishing with Smitty even when his male Klingon BO's would start cross-dressing (how appropriate?) and am glad I ran those first.

Ah well.

Fire at Will is fun. Beams are fun. I like Rapid Fire(?) and Cannons with Xev, too. A lot. I'm hoping T'hee will be my AoE Xev someday. Have no idea what Cloak will add. I never use it but it has to be useful, right! Rom's Singularity seems like a freebie power up to this point. Oh, and, Rom ships are cool. Even though we can't really customize them much for free, it works.

Cardassians to the rescue. Rom mishes finally start to heat up

First I was fighting one ship...then the saucer popped off and I was being double teamed! 'Bravo!' I yelled, and then happily destroyed them both.

Yup, finally starting to heat up...

I'm not sure if this is sufficiently helpful, but one thing you could try is to browse STOWiki (and for that matter lots of other things) using Chrome and its text mode extension (just search "chrome text mode").  When you activate that extension, the browser stops downloading or rendering graphics, flash, and plugins, and just puts big empty boxes where they would be.  I just tried to browse STOWiki with it on, and if I switch from white background to black background (right click the big T for options) the site *seems* to be basically readable.  This may significantly reduce the amount of bandwidth you use even in day to day browsing.  Since we've established you are paying by the bit, this might help in other areas as well.

I finally tried this and had mixed results. I like Chrome better than IE. It's more readable (Titan looks way better) and it's a lot faster. None of the image blocking extensions I used worked, though, and on some sites I was using a lot more bandwidth than with IE. When checking mail, for example. I tried 4 extensions with similar results before I gave up on the idea.

--------

Hey this ended up being a good tip after all! My IE is way more readable, now. Somehow some of my settings were off.

Just in case anyone's not logged on lately... There's a TOS giveaway that ends today. Get your free 23c costumes and shuttle.

Quote
This bundle includes the Class F Shuttle, the entire Original Series Ship Interior, the Command Tunic Uniform, the Medical Officer Uniform, the Formal Dress Uniform, as well as a TOS phaser weapon.

Speaking of ship interiors... Did you know you could access certain things from inside your own ship? I don't even know what they are. Just recently stumbled onto it. It's kinda handy to be able to access my shared bank from anywhere in space vs. having to dock somewhere or wait for my Nimbus Trade Freighter to recharge.

---

I just remembered.. The shared bank isn't accessible from the Trade Freighter for some reason. But mailing with attachments works from the Trade Freighter.

Every good thought Smitty gave me about mishes, T'hee undid.

I started hitting random map events in Beta sector ~ lvl 36. I used zone swapping. It worked better than I thought it would. T'hee's now happily PVE'ing his way through 52.

Luv my Rom ship. Plasma seems ok but I miss antiproton. Rom ships are good in Mirror Invasion  : ) All my ships are, but, I get to practice cloak in a minorly useful way. Nice place to have decent AoE too.

Yeah, I hear you. It was my choice. I didn't invest too many millions into it either. I think I was hoping someone would tell me how great plasma can be and not to change to give me a reason to go with anything other than what gives ... +crit chance and severity boost. As non-set gear.

I tried plasma energy weapons just to try something different that was also Rom themey and with the thoughts that the DoT might be useful against the largest hp bosses.

Honestly, my main still uses Romulan Plasma weapons.  RomPlasma are rep store weapons from (of course) New Romulus rep.  Cost dilithium of course but probably a hell of a lot less than what good AP weapons will cost.  I also use the experimental romulan plasma beam which has the benefit of not draining weapon power (which means in effect it is free damage).  I also use the Preserver set Resonant Disruptor Beam.

Rom Plasma does plasma dot *and* debuffs resistance.  I like them even though I was ignorant when I bought them and bought CritHx2 instead of CritDx2.  Still, only the best AP weapons will beat these, and that means crafting upgrades over and over and over and over again and throwing away a lot of Acc/Dmg/Snare weapons.  It takes a lot of crafting to get the magic CritDx3 weapons that make them fully crit damage monsters.

I thought it was another flavor of energy weapon that debuffs resistance...? That makes Plasma a lot more appealing. Are you sure your Disrupters aren't doing that? Or is there something special about Rom rep gear?

Standard disruptors debuff resistance as their standard secondary effect.  Plasma weapons have a DoT as their standard secondary effect.  Romulan Plasma weapons are special weapons that have both debuff and DoT.

Special note.  By default, normal (i.e. non Epic) weapons have up to four "modifiers."  The "standard secondary effect" generally counts as one.  So when you have a special weapon like the Romulan Plasma weapons that have two special effects, they can generally only have two more modifiers.  So no CritDx3 Romulan Plasma, because that would be five modifiers (debuff, DoT, and three Crit Damage).  If you upgrade and strike Epic class, you get one more modifier (I believe it is always "Ac/Dm"on weapons which is essentially a single modifier that is equivalent to one Acc and one Dmg modifier).

The interesting thing about Romulan Plasma weapons is that because you buy them from the reputation store, you can in effect chose the other two modifiers and not have to rely on random chance.  A CritDx2 RomPlasma is basically a CritDx2 / PlasmaDoT / Debuff weapon.  That's maybe not as good on paper as, say, a CritDx2 / Dmg Antiproton weapon, because that's effectively CritDx3 / Dmg (Antiproton has CritD as its "intrinsic modifier") but it is still pretty good.

If you want to know what each "flavor" does and don't want to burn all your data looking at the wiki: here we go:

Phaser: chance to disable subsystem for 5 seconds
Disruptor: chance to debuff resistance -10%
Plasma: chance for (non-stacking) plasma DoT
Tetryon: chance to deal extra damage to shields
Polaron: chance to debuff subsystem power for 5 seconds
Antiproton: +20% crit severity (i.e. +20% crit damage)
Proton: on critical 50% chance to deal bonus proton damage
(all "chance to" are 2.5%)

Also:

Romulan Plasma: chance to debuff + chance for plasma DoT
Torpedoes: generally deal Kinetic damage, which is 75% resisted by shields (thus, they do four times damage to hull as shields)

Some common weapon modifiers:

Acc: +10% accuracy
CritD: +20% critical severity (i.e. damage)
CritH: +2% critical chance
Dmg: +Damage (not sure exactly, it's something like 3% I think)
Over: 2.5% chance to upgrade next beam attack to a beam overload attack
Pen: attack ignores 10 points of armor (it is like being partially unresistable)
PvP Dmg: bonus damage vs other players.  Outside of PvP its worthless
Rapid: 2.5% chance to trigger rapid fire mode on all cannons (does nothing to beam weapons) for 2 seconds
Snare: -5% speed and turn (i.e. the modifer everyone hates to roll)

I'm going partially off of memory, but I think that is mostly right (I did double check the modifiers).  Also, because the proc chances are pretty small, the differences in overall damage output are not dramatic between weapon types.  They tend to be more flavor than substance unless you really try to optimize them.

This is good info for anyone new to gear. Thanks. I knew bits and pieces of this but now that I see it all together I have a hard time seeing myself in anything but AP newb gear (pre-Set gear).

2.5%... That's how many shots...? How many shots does it take to take out the average mob...?

Set bonuses are still a mystery to me other than I know they exist. The only set gear I ever get is Cutting Beam (Omega rep(?) kinetic/high damage turret) due to it pumps out nice dps no matter what other energy weapons I'm using and then I don't get anything else in the set.

Haven't had a Set bonus or... a.. what is it... Starship Mastery? yet. So I still have that stuff to look forward to and am already fairly happy with how things are turning out. Finally... I sucked at STO for so long...lol.. but I still tortured the queues (sorry, ppls!) and had fun. I think the Mastery comes from T6's? Somehow? Have those to look forward to still too.

Set bonuses are still a mystery to me other than I know they exist. The only set gear I ever get is Cutting Beam (Omega rep(?) kinetic/high damage turret) due to it pumps out nice dps no matter what other energy weapons I'm using and then I don't get anything else in the set.

So you have the Kinetic Cutting Beam.  So do I.  Look at its info to look at its set bonuses.  The first one, for having two pieces of the set, is a 2.5% chance to get a) +10 weapon power, b) +500 current weapon power resistance, and c) +500 maximum weapon power resistance.  Parsing that, what that means is that for every shot you fire (not just from the cutting beam) you have a 2.5% chance (1 in 40) of getting a buff that increases weapon power, resists decreases in weapon power, and resists anyone trying to debuff your max weapon power.  In City of Heroes terms, think of this buff as if you got +10 endurance, made you impervious to endurance drain, and made all your attacks cost basically nothing (ala conserve power).  Except in STO, that comes with increased damage because your beam damage increases with weapon power.  You're usually firing about once per second or once every 1.5 seconds in heavy combat, so this buff happens about once a minute for 3 seconds.  Not bad.

The second one says for every hit you take there's a 1% chance to reduce all incoming damage by 99% for 2 seconds with a minimum cooldown of 30 seconds.  In other words, for every hit you take there's a 1% chance to basically become invulnerable to damage for 2 seconds.  If you are fighting normally you might get hit once per second or so, but if you're tanking or in combat many vs one you might get hit as much as two or three times per second.  This buff might trigger once every two minutes, or as much as once every thirty seconds.  Its not fantastic, but its not bad either.

So how do you get these?  Well, the other two items in the three item set are the Universal Assimilated Module and the Omega Plasma Torpedo launcher.  The Omega launcher is an interesting torpedo.  Torpedos normally recharge slowly.  It can take eight to ten seconds to reload a torpedo launcher.  The Omega torpedo can actually "store" up to five torpedos.  So when you aren't using it, every six seconds the Omega torp adds one torpedo to the launcher, up to five.  When you want to fire torpedos, you can rapid fire all five at two second intervals.  You still have to wait for the torps to recharge, but its one of the few torpedo launchers that can burst fire a lot of torps.  It is not the best torpedo launcher out there, but it is a relatively cheap torp to get (it is a rep torp in the Omega rep, 30,000 credits, 15,000 dilithium, 500 omega credits) that works well especially for newer players that maybe aren't used to balancing fast beams and slow torp firing rates combined with things like High Yield torpedo buffs.  Its a nice bang-the-keyboard torp.

The console is a universal console meaning it can go in any console slot.  When slotted it offers the following buffs:

+0.92% crit chance
+9.2% crit damage
+5 weapon power
+5.1 Hull regen
+22.9 control expertise

Even if you don't know precisely what +5.1 hull regen is (honestly, even I don't have the formula off the top of my head) its basically a regen buff for starships.  And even if you don't care about control, the rest of the buffs sound pretty good and they are: I still run this console actually.  So if you keep the Kinetic Cutting Beam and take this console, you get all those console buffs and get the 2-piece bonus basically for free.

That's how you start.  Find something you like - Kinetic Cutting Beam.  Look at its set bonuses.  See if any sound interesting.  Look at the rest of the set pieces.  See if any of them look like something you'd want to have either way.  If you find something else you like, and the set bonus you get for adding it also sounds good, try that.  Over time how I got familiar with set bonuses was that every time I encountered something new that was a set piece, either through unlocking reputation gear or by basically getting set gear for free by running the featured mission of the week, I would look at what a) the gear did and b) what the set bonuses were.  If any sounded interesting, I spent more time thinking about them.  If they seemed good enough to replace what I had, I tried it out.  Nice thing is if you're wrong, you can always go back and reslot.  And if you're learning with the set pieces from the featured mission of the week, you aren't even spending any dilithium or reputation credits on things you later don't want.  Your initial learning curve is basically free just for playing and reading.

The important thing to note about set bonuses is that none of them are game changing, but they start to add up.  You have lots of opportunities to have them, and you can easily have three or four.  At this moment my main is running the Experimental Romulan Beam and the Zero Point conduit module, which means I get the Plasma Conductive set bonus, which is +8.9% plasma energy damage (remember: I run Romulan Plasma weapons) and +17.8 Electro-Plasma Flow (basically energy flow) which improves how fast I can recharge my weapon power - in effect, more damage.  I'm running all three Resonant Preserver items: the  Resonant Transphasic Torpedo, the Resonant Disruptor Beam, and the Harmonic Resonant Tactical module.  The two set bonuses I get for that are +3.6 weapon power for two-piece (i.e. more damage) and for three-piece I get a special power with 2 minute recharge and 15 second duration that, while it is up, speeds up all my weapons firing rate by 4% per second up to +40%.  If you have enough weapon power to drive this and you use something like Beam Fire at Will when you trigger it, you can get a really good amount of burst damage going in all directions (I like this when taking on Borg clusters in Borg events).  And I have all four of the Kobali set (warp, impulse, deflector, shields).  That gives me a hull regen that gets stronger as hull gets lower, an emergency temp hull heal that auto triggers when I'm hit at less than 25% hull, and a 2 minute recharge power that auto-heals nearby allies as I take damage.

That's seven set bonuses in one ship.  Each one small, but collectively it can have a lot of overall impact.  And they weren't hard to get for the most part.  A lot of people recommend the zero point module and the assimilated module, and it is not hard after taking those to take one weapon each to get their two-piece bonuses.  The entire Kobali set was not hard to get because all of the items except one come from just running one mission (Dust to Dust) and getting the reward (the last one came with the Kobali cruiser itself) Except for the one item that is now impossible to get because you could only get it with the cruiser (the warp core) the other three are things that would be decent to have without the set bonuses, including the Kobali shield which has one of if not the highest shield hit points in the game.  If you don't know what shield, impulse, and deflector you should be running, my recommendation is run Dust to Dust three times, take those three things as rewards, and use them until you find something better.

It would really help if they showed the set bonuses. Without owning any pieces in a set the only info I get is what pieces I need to complete the set. There's nothing about what the bonuses are for partial/full completes.

It would have been nice to know about the torpedoes in that set too. It would be nice to have more detail on All special weaps!

I looked at that Omega rep set awhile back but I normally don't like plasma torpedoes and I like all the consoles I have already. I had no idea the torps would be good and I would like some special/better torps on my Cutting Beam guy so I likely would have gotten them already had I known. I had no idea what the set bonuses were so I wasn't going to even consider giving up any of my consoles. Now I have the complete picture to consider.

I mean, I guess that's what the wiki's for but it's too bad we can't get that info in-game as we're shopping for gear.

I'll probably get those torpedoes. Tyvm. I might get that console too. I give up +22ish% maximum shields is the main thing I think and a(nother) 25% chance that when a hull heal completes that I get a 6% energy weapon damage boost.

I'm running all Fleet stuff on my Escort except Cutting Beam and my other weapons which are all store bought or drops. It's pretty decent for having no set bonuses and not having to invest a lot of thought or currency when getting it. Some gear, like the above console, has useful effects too.

Ordinarily I would say there's the wiki and there's the test server, but both of those are bandwidth-eating options for someone with low data caps.  If you're interested in something in particular, just let me know and I can try to post the info.

Tyvm. They DO leave a lot to imagination, in-game.. I mean it's not a Mountain of Dil and etc, but, it's enough that more detail would be nice.

All those little bonuses add up. I already have a ton. That one where I don't blow up when a bad guy next to me does - Must have. The one where I get healed when I do damage is another must have. When there's 100 things with a 1% chance to go off there's almost always something bound to go my way. I'll take all those little bonuses I can get.

Have you tried those newish Temporal Chroniton torpedoes? I forgot I recently stocked up on those, the drop (rep reward) version. They are pretty darn decent. I didn't remember to check the recharge time last night but it seems about average.

When fired off after Torpedo: Spread (what I normally use on my Warbird) or High Yield (what I normally use on my Escort) it sends a luverly stream of torpedoes towards my target(s).. The bonuses are very nice, too. I wouldn't appreciate them as much in my Cruiser but I do in my Escort and Warbird. There's a 33% chance to get a stacking (to 5) 3% resistance buff to shields that lasts 60 seconds - it also gives a non-stacking 5% boost to turn rate and speed in that 33% chance.

The set they are in includes a decent universal console and ... an AP beam or cannon I think.

I was going to hop on that plasma torpedo last night but this tossed a monkey wrench in things due to these Temporals have been pretty good so now I have to rethink.

OH YEAH..! Check this out.. I only had 2 toons that could run Mirror Universe when it started and I am 1 drop away from completing it with my second and when does the Event end...? About 7 hours before I can run it again. DOH! *sigh*  : )
