I actually managed to play a lot of STO last month. It was like...how? And then I had a day I blew a gig of data in one day and then right after, the Season 12 mega-patch hit. Thus ended my spacial glory.

Ugh the giveaways! I'm missing the Season 12 giveaways.

I think that must be where I got this really great Epic console on my first guy.. A previous giveaway. Thanks that it had an AP damage boost because that made me turn that guy to AP and I am very happy with his AP build, and, that console.

The graphics update is really nice. I wonder if they could do something like that for CO.. I'm ok with CO's graphics as-is, but, better is always better.

STO gets a lot of dev love. I would say they are on par with CoH at the end. It's like... 'this is kinda an old game, how can they keep making it fresh?' but they do.

STO gets a lot of dev love.

There are a lot of Star Trek fans on the dev team.  And in many ways, STO is the only place where official commercial Trek action is happening.  That anyone can actually see.

I think I am done with sto, why you might ask; well lets see. Before the new graphic "update" my sto game was awesome, nearly like the cinematic fmvs in Star Wars Tor. Now no matter what kind of tweaks I do, I cannot make it look like it did. Now it just looks like pancake; and  that is after 3 months of working on it.
Then just today, I found out they binded streaming with the damned run shift button. Which is hard coded on the left shift key as well. So you cannot even change the run from the shift to something else.
One day the Phoenix will rise again.

I had to re-hotkey due to a new mouse and haven't had any problems with Run or anything else yet and my graphics have improved with the last two updates. Sorry, Angel, I've got nothing useful.

I'm starting to look at the Zen and EC purchasable T6's. All I know so far is I'm going to get an Escort with my Zen but I haven't picked which flavor yet. I don't know much about the EC purchasable ones yet except their price range but I'm thinking to try one of these too when the EC's pile up high enough.

Oh yeah! Have to mention Sho'nuff! Nicely done, sir. What a coup for STO.

Is it (still? even?) possible to level a newb and grab that anniversary Science T6 just by mishing?

I was already unsure and then *boing* the servers went down for an "unscheduled maintenance" for a Thursday style patch. What a random patch! I had just finally decided to level my Science guy and was a half a mish away from running 'Of Signs and Portents' with him for the first time.

Hey I just noticed that due to the sale I can buy a T6 with Zen.

I want to get an Escort due to that's what I play most now. That's about all I've narrowed it down to. It seems like I saw 1 ship that had a better than average shield rating and at least 1 ship with a better than average turn rate.

The Temporal escorts are kinda interesting due to they are Warbirdlike but I'm not so much interested in the Temporal BO slot and I think it only had + 10 power to weapons.. could be wrong.

The Phantom Intel Escort looked worthy..

*shrug*

Any tips/suggestions? I think I pretty much can't go wrong.. It's my first 'big purchase' though so I thought I'd fish for any advice.

Btw.. Science ships are fun! Secondary deflectors are an interesting addition.. I'm still just level 10 but it's a fun change of pace so far. I can see leveling this guy to be my 4th and latest Fleet Admiral.

I'm probably the worst person alive to offer suggestions on T6 escorts.  I think cruisers are great, science ships are interesting, and escorts are like jogging in bad neighborhoods with your pockets full of bullets.  In one sense, you're the most heavily armed person around.  But in another, probably more important sense, not really. :p

That's kinda interesting. My Cruiser was the easiest to level but what I play least. I thought Warbirds were OP at first and that I'd just wasted time with an Escort until I leveled the Warbird up and then I went back to my Escort's punch.

The science ship is a whole other beast so far. It's not pew-pew.. It's drain, debuff, devastate. Which can be kinda fun. Maybe someday I'll be healing Escorts and dubuffing for Cruisers on the side.

Maybe I should get something I haven't tried yet, but then, what if I don't like it? Carriers/Dreadnaughts (?) have small craft (?) I can launch (?) and tons of hp (?). I think? Or something like this? They are the cheapest EC ships... I think.

It's good we don't all like to play the same thing. I liked playing all my ships best, once. Right now the two I'm most interested to play are my first and my latest. If I could only have 1 toon and ship and had to choose today it'd be a tactical/escort.

P.S.
Sho'Nuff makes about the best Klingon ever next to Worf. I think he may actually be part Klingon.

Soooo with only a day left to decide... I think I've found a winner. Well, 2..

They're from the same series so I thought I'd look at buying a bundle. They only come in a 10k megabundle..

They're both from the Pilot Escort series. At first look I preferred the Science Pilot Escort due to the console and trait are about perfect for my playstyle...

However, the Tactical flavor preserves my delicate balance of Tactical BO (that sounds Wrong..) powers.. It preserves my entire build and then gives me a couple of extra consoles and abilities as far as that goes. OH and, also very important, it has 3 Engineer console slots and the Science version has 2. I could use an extra Engineer console slot... I only have 2 now.

I think what is probably best for me is to get the Tactical version and save up for the Science version and then swipe the console and trait from the Science version for use with the Tactical version.

What I like about the Pilot series is that it matches me pretty decent at this point. It has a higher than normal shield rating and I concentrate on my shields more than my hull in my build. And it has a nice turn rate that I like. The bells and whistles match me pretty good too (traits/consoles). I also like that I get another torpedo (weapons) slot up front. I lose a rear weapons slot, but, I think I don't care.

The only red flag is Weapons power. Instead of the usual 15 power to weapons and 5 to engines they have 10 to both. Which means I lose 5 weapons power. Which means... ummm.. I'm not entirely sure, actually.. I don't know what 5 extra engine power does for me (as compared to what I have right now) either.

Escort Carriers also look entertaining. Might have to try one of those at some point too.

---------

The Science Pilot escort might work for me if I can just tweak my Tactical BO powers chain (...lol) to be as satisfying with 1 very nice power less.

With diminishing returns I'm not sure how much more resistance the extra Engineering console will give me, and, my power transfer rate is already good.

On the other hand, extra shield size on a shield focused build with a ship that has a shield modifier bonus, and, having more shield drain on a shield drain specced build might be good too.. And then I get the trait and console I want, too..

That only leaves the thing with Weapons and Engine power..

hmmmmmm

The Pilot Escorts have additional maneuverability controls that no other ship has.  Positional thrusters allow you to rapidly get 10KM closer/further from a target, and to strafe left or right just as quickly.

I think that's what the extra engine power is for.  The thrusters do have a cooldown.

Well that sounds like another bonus I'd get a lot of light yearage out of. Thrusters and the plethora of other extras would probably make up for a loss of 5 Weapons power.

The shield modifier bonus looks significant. I was drawn to that, too. Higher shield base stats seems like a good thing for my build.

This is a kinda fun process.. I can see myself buying more ships : )

I ended up with nearly zero playtime today and about the same amount of energy when I was playing.

But.. I did look and relook and look & relook... And the Pilot Escort series seems like the obvious best first ship purchase for me. I can keep my exact same build and even gain a Boff power. (I know why they're called Boffs now.. all I could think of was BO this morning...lol... gaining a Boff power sounds way better than gaining a BO power..) Turn rate is also important to me and the Pilot has that covered. More shields? Yes plx. I also basically gain a console of my choice. I've even been wanting that extra fore weapons slot.

Even the console bundled with the Tactical version that I didn't like so much at first *is* a good fit due to .. well, I Do have 3 nice rep torpedoes in this build already.. Omega, Rom, Temporal ... and the console *does* give a 'moderate' boost to projectile damage. As well as firing projectiles. The starship trait fires projectiles too when the target is in my 90' arc *and* I *do* try to keep things in my 90' arc all the time already... That's not as juicy as armor penetration but it's themey and still satisfying in a min/maxie way.

All the planets seem aligned.

I'm gonna sleep on it but I bet I end up with the Tactical Pilot Escort.

I can see two real good reasons to save up for Bundles now that I didn't realize before.. Consoles and Traits.

Well I ended up with the Tactical Pilot escort. The Carrier escort tempted me at the end..

As soon as I decided to buy a new ship my free time evaporated. I haven't had a chance to do much more than pick the thing up and put on a fresh coat of paint. I also got my Cutting Beam to MK XIV and my main cannon to XIII (XIV looks so sweet...) just in time before the bonus weekend ends. Rom Admiralty upgrade kits ftw!

The only bad thing and it is kinda a biggy, is... I would like to try this new ship with two of my toons, but, one's KDF and it's a Fed ship.. Another reason to Not make a KDF toon. Now I understand why they have crossfaction bundles and how they work... It never dawned on me that I'd run into this someday when I was (painfully) leveling a KDF toon to Fleet Admiral. It seems obvious now but buying ships wasn't on my mind then.

So, I pass this info on to any other newb that might benefit. If you want to share your Zen purchased ships between toons they have to be of the same alignment.

I hope you were able  to  get  the  Lukari  Dorito  ship. It's a very good ship and there are You  Tube  videos  out there for high and low end budget  builds. A guy named Timberwolf   has one for each and his low budget  build does
40-43 k dps with free mission reward drops being used. I believe  he uses the Sol  Defense  set on his build. I'm  in love with my Quantum  Phase set so that's  what I  have  been  using  lately.

This is such a fun game..

I was having a good enough time playing CO again (sans Rampages being neutered) but then some weeks ago I was able to patch STO up and play it again and without running out of Internet. With the record floods we've been having since weeks there's been the maximum amount of playtime, too. I never get bored. My Science guy is a Rear Admiral now and I am planning to roll up an engineer/escort guy next. That'll give me 2 escort guys - 1 Tac and 1 Eng, 1 Cruiser who is Tac, a Science ship guy who is .. Science, and... my mistake .. errr Rom .. KDF Eng/Warbird Fleet Admiral.

When I found out I could trade my Zen ships between toons I thought about converting my Cruiser guy to Escort because the Escort is uber and the Cruiser is not, but, he ended up just Being a Cruiser guy. So I bought him a new Cruiser. I got totally lucky because it just happened to be a ship I like that cost next to nothing and I can upgrade it to a fairly decent t5U - which means I can have all the consoles and HPs of a T6 for a bigillion less. When I first saw the ship out of the box I thought my luck had ran out.. A floating SQUARE/flat cube! basically.. How in the heck do you know which way a SQUARE is facing...? Anyone reading this probably knows I already have 'which-way-is-my-ship-facing' issues. It works though. Somehow. There are just enough visual guides that I don't get too mixed up. I haven't got a chance to fly it much yet due to leveling the Science guy and tradeskilling and admiralting and Doffing and... but, Smitty finally has a ship that isn't blah and I look forward to flying it again.

This new Science guy has to be my favorite newb. My tac/escort is my favorite toon but the Sci/Sci is my favorite newb, I'm glad I didn't play one until now because until now I was spending a lot of effort getting used to 3d space and moving around in it while targeting things in an ever narrowing cone. Now, I can focus more on what Boff powers I can cram together to make the most mayhem.

Secondary deflectors on Science ships are fun. I just got lucky and crafted one early on that added an effect to my Sensor Scans(?). It basically allows me to tag a target until he dies or cloaks and buff myself while I debuff him. This seems to create a lot of agro (as well as being fun..) - which is nooo problemo because I'm tanky in normal queue level stuff.

Science's Photonic Fleet at level 37(?)ish seems really weak compared to Tactical's Go Down Fighting which is weak compared to Engineering's Miracle Worker. This is the worst thing about a Science toon, to me. Miracle Worker is that good and Photonic Fleet is that bad. But... after re-reviewing things.. a Science toon in a Science ship, works. I probably wouldn't give my Sci toons any other ship, though. Whereas I can give my Cruisers and Escorts to Tac or Engineer captains and they do very well either way. The reason why a Sci toon works on a Sci ship is that it's team focused vs. player focused and the energy weapons buffs are mostly wasted on me due to I focus on everything But energy weapons in my Science ship.

Anyway....

It's been a lot of fun being able to play so much. I've gotten 3 new ships in the past week and look forward to playing them all. After this 18 hour (or however long...) *SURPRISE!* patch is done.. I've got 2 toons to level.. new ships to fly.. the tradeskilling (or my knack with being useful with it..) has been picking up.. I'm going to start shopping/drooling over a Z-Store Sci ship soon...

fun fun  : )

Hey, btw. That Braydon engine from Of Signs and Portents isn't so bad for a newb. If you've got nothing better, the effect it has of letting you hit the turbo button once in awhile is kinda nice. It's not that useful really (to me, at this point..) but it's nicer having it there than not...

You should  really  try to get the event ships. The traits you get can be very useful  and the trait (Protoatter Capacitor)that came with the Lukari  ship is awesome, along with  the console ( Console-Universal-Protomatter Field Projection) it comes with. My engineer is flying  the Lukari  ship as a beamscort  and with Miracle  Worker  added it let's you take a beating  without  getting  a scratch. Combine  that with a Tykes Rift, Gravity  Well II and a Tachyon  Beam that reduces their shields  and increases my ships hull/shield  regeneration.
Now back to why you should get the event ships. They are T6 ships and can have an awesome  console like  the Kobali  ship did.  But you also get the Admiralty  Ship Card which can let you make several k of dil every day.

Well, just rub it in why don't you!

hehe

That's where the best stuff comes from is Events. My best console came from some event from when I first started playing. I've watched several nice event T6's float by since I've started playing and not snagged even one. Just never works out. The last Event I tried to get the ship for (don't remember which one..), I ended up needing one more daily and I would have got it. This one, I misunderstood how the weekly reward for Of Signs and Portents worked. I was thinking, for some reason, that we could get those 400 points (whatever they're called..) every week the same time that the new Of Signs and Portents mish rewards were available so I wasn't sweating the Dailies. Didn't figure out I was wrong until it was too late.

There's an Admiralty ship coming up in the next Event I think.

*Ding* 50 and my first Borg Advanced with a Sci ship. Too fun.

Man they are hard nerfing Ground. I guess Space will be not so far behind. That's how it started in CO, with me, was the CDR nerfs. Then it progressively got worse to the point where I lost the point. It kinda feels like deja vu. Hopefully this won't happen in STO.
