That is not strange in the slightest to be honest.

It is, for me! I have to win, the game.

Jooc was slightly mainier than Senge but I think I have no Jooc screenies anymore. I only have this one of Senge due to I put it online and posted it on the CO forum before my hard drive filled with more ancient screenies than that that I have dragged around from machine to machine over the years, died. Sad day.

One thing about STO in this regard (the race to be uber) is that I don't even know what the best gear is. I've got the new Polaron stuff, Rom plasma, and AP of course. None of them really stand out from each other except that Plasma doesn't seem to be the quick kill weapon of choice but it sure can be expensive. I mean, there's nothing in the game that I look at and say "ohhhh I gotta have that". Which appears to be a major goal for them - feel free to pat yourselves on the back, STO..

Now that I'm actively parsing I'm getting the bug to overachieve more, a little. It's not the driving desire like I normally always have in MMO's, though. I'm not sure what being a Star in STO even gets you. Maybe that's been part of my lack of motivation to overachieve, too. I rarely see (that I notice) the same players in queues so there's no one to try to impress because they won't remember me anyway. STO also has Tons of Distractions that have nothing to do with fighting... *click* *click* *click* *shuffles STO windows like a double deck of cards*

I mean, putting together a toon like Senge is motivated almost purely by profit and the ability to show off.

I haven't felt the need to show off in STO and I'm already profiting. I mean, there's ~ 500 million EC's in the bank and climbing daily, all the rep/mish gear I want...  I can get any available ship in the game with a little patience. I can run any Advanced queue I want and often get agro up to and including the Boss fights. And I'm only putting out like half the deeps of the top 1% - and like 1/3rd of the Elite. Still been happy. So odd. For me!

I know this may be a facepalm to the better informed players of STO, as I'm at best an armchair captain and not a min-maxer, but last night I had a revelation of sorts...

My Risian Corvette isn't anything that turns heads.  Yes, there's better ships that are just as maneuverable if not more so (Pilot Escorts).  Yes, there are Tier 6 ships with slightly better stats and a Ship Ability unlock that is more worth a Level 60 Captain's time.  But I like it.  I earned it, it's kind of cool looking, and different than the "two warp sticks and a pizza cutter" tradition.

Then last night, I saw a curious blank in my ship's slotting.  "Heavy Weapons".

Now, it's not what I first thought.  They made a slot to stick a Heavy Dual Cannon inside of... neat!  And wrong.  The Heavy Weapons slot is in the rear (Aft) arc, so no cannons will mount there as they are all Ship Fore Weapons.  So I hit the STO Wiki.

Back in March, the developers wanted to add capability to Escorts as most of the damage/DPS play have left the class in favor of Science and other ship types that blur the line from Science to Escort.  The Heavy Weapon slot first made it in for the three escorts that accompanied the change, but now, it's in a variety of Escorts.  The official type:

Quote
"Tier 5, Tier 5-U and Tier 6 Raiders and all Tier 5, Tier 5-U and Tier 6 starships with a Tactical Commander seat, 7 weapons, and 1 or fewer Hangar Bays will receive a Heavy Weapons Slot and access to a basic upgradeable Heavy Weapon."

What's more?  Heavy weapons are not affected by ship firing modes.  This comes as a downer, as certain abilities won't faze the weapon or increase it's output.  And the weapon itself is as bad on Weapon Energy drain as you might expect, at -10.

But the upside?  First, if you can't get a Heavy Weapon from the ship promotions (last one was tied to the R&D promo in June: the Smuggler's Escort) you can get a free one to give it a spin.  Check this little guy out.  It delivers 1,200 damage per shot at Mark XII that fires once every 5 seconds if you use autofire... and with the Ultimate Upgrades from the Key Ring promotion right now, that's kicked up to 1,600 damage at Mark XIV.  AND it fires in 360 degrees.  Nice for that squirrelly ship that likes to change shield facings exposed to you every few seconds.

So, for a boss-type ship, it's not an advantage, as those shield facings are much higher in damage resistance.  But with the Heavy Weapon equipped, you can cut through groups of smaller ships like a hot knife through butter.  It doesn't do spread targeting like the Torpedo or Cannon volley abilities, but it does fire in a straight line.  You can hit the ship, and its friend right behind it.

If you have an escort, give it a spin.  Your Borg and Tholian Red Alerts alone will be much faster with it, in any case.

Fun on a bun.

I claimed the freebie awhile back when they added the heavy weapons slot. I saw someone using it before then and was thinking, man, I wish I had one of those.. and then someone in Zone said how to claim one. Which I immediately did.

It's nice to have another turret/Omni (on a kinda long recharge) that's even a cone cylinder, but, what I've always wondered is how efficient they are energy use wise. I stopped using mine for awhile because of that but I'm using it again now due to.. how much can 10 (?) energy every 5 seconds really hurt. Still wonder, though.

... and with the Ultimate Upgrades from the Key Ring promotion right now

those things look yum.

I have two fleet mates/leaders that have like Eeeeeverything at mk xiv and gold. I showed one a K-13 console he hadn't seen before and in like 2 minutes he was posting a mk xiv/epic version. If they weren't such nice players I'd insert a dirty word at this point, like, 'bastards'...  : )

Looked at my hyperexcited cannon again.. It looks like it's plenty efficient enough to have slotted and if mobs are like me, they have less Electrical resistance than they do the normal forms of energy weapon damage. So it should be a good bang for the buck. I've just always wondered if the added energy cost of a weapon slot that didn't exist when I put together my build would throw off my energy use when weapons cycle. At 9.1 energy use (with redux) every 4 seconds... probably not.

Those numbers posted will vary, by the way. I show 2.2k+ dmg with mk xiv ultra rare in non-sector space.  I also show a 4 second recharge, not 5.

Anyway! Just to muddy the topic... Shows you what I know about power management. Not much - I just try and keep weapons redlined at 125. That was a surprise how they magically added that slot and dumped a free weapon in the ... errr D-Store? for us to claim

To be honest, I made eyeball guesses from what I was seeing on mine.  On a proper build with increased damage output, 2K is probably more likely.

And in most Borg/Tholian Queues, I've been lucky to find groups that have 2-3 decent hitters.  I would usually be the slouch who deals damage in the 100's for every hit when others were dropping 1,000s per hit, with my Cluster Torpedoes getting the occasional and lucky 10K hit when shields were down.  Without a good offensive team, it's easy to see a Red Alert fail.

I think I got STO working again without shutting the TV down! ... still not sure what I'm doing, though. :D

I can't figure out for the life of me how to get a T6 ship, aside from actually giving them real money.

I'm curious what the attraction is to Red Alerts? They're probably the busiest queues but don't they give the smallest reward? I think they offer any mark you want - that's probably it, huh? They end fairly fast, too.

I tell you what. If most players are like I was before using a parser - they have no idea who is putting out more dps than anyone else. Another thing: to me, when I was a newb in STO, I was happy just to have my ship facing the right direction...lol Still am, sometimes!

I got some 80k parses last night. 80k...

My Rom plasma build is mostly torps. It's just fun and I don't plan on changing it much. It's probably my lowest dps build, by far, presently. I had no idea before the parses. And now that I know... it's still fun and I don't plan on changing it much. But I will ofc quintuple its dps over time (the years?) if I can.

I don't know how rich you are in EC's but some Fleet T6's are pretty good for the money. Otherwise, just use the plethora of farming tools available to you in STO for farming Dil and save save save/wait for a sale. Orrrrrrr get an Event ship like I'm about to finally do in .. 4 days? It honestly is not that hard to get a T6 if you put your mind to it and just play the game. There's probably a dil farming method that fits in with your playstyle without having to go too far out of your way to do it.

Bingo.  I have two rep projects left after spending a year away.  Once they're done, that's it for red alerts for me.  Battlezones offer far more Dil for 30 ish minutes of play.

Hehe see Battlezones wouldn't be my first choice, either. I've tried Tzenkethi and whatever that one is in Delta(?). There is a metric f-ton of flying around for what seems like a trickle of Dil - when I do them! It's all Space and no waiting for queues or anything like that, so, they're perfect otherwise. Probably I just haven't been in them at the right time/completed them properly. I have barely a clue what I'm doing there besides trying to take over the map.

As a quick, reliable, way to get daily bonus marks for any faction you want, Red Alerts are hard to beat. I guessed right!  : ) Those queues are always so busy I always wondered if there was something else to them.. but, that's enough, huh. Wham, bam, 5 minutes later you have any mark you want.

The Shuttle Event and some other Events that award any mark are amazing for stockpiling marks when they roll around.

I have a couple of hundred thousand ECs (the standard Energy Credits, I assume you mean?), but I don't see any T6 ships that can be bought for EC.

I accidentally spent most of my Dil (Dilithium Crystals, I presume) in the Upgrading interface, because I didn't notice it was using them until it was too late.  But I only had around 8000-ish when I'd started, not the 600,000+ I'd need to convert to the 3200 Zen required to buy a T6 ship.  I also don't know what those farming tools are to get more.  (But since you can only refine 8000 Dil per day, it'd take months to refine enough to get a ship, even if I farmed a million unrefined Dil right this second)

And all the T6 Fleet ships seem to require a large number of a multiple credit types I have 0 of, and don't know how to get (I guess they're Fleet Credits and Fleet Marks, but they all just look like little playing cards to me).

And I have no idea how to get an Event ship.  Or even if you can get an Event ship on the PS4 version.  I assume there's a mission chain somewhere, but I don't know what those missions are.

Mainly, I don't know how to get a T6 ship because I don't know what the steps are or even how to begin.  The full extent of what I know is "T6 ships exist.  Some can be bought with Zen which I can't easily get a hold of.  Some can be bought with playing cards I don't know how to get", and that's as far as it goes.

I honestly am taking a break from STO for a bit so I haven't logged in a while, but unless they radically changed things recently your best shot at T6 ships is to get them by grinding out the special events that come along a few times a year.  Log in and do some stuff at least 30 days out of 45 or so, bingo T6 ship.  Not all T6 ships are equal, some are great some are not so great, but still they are usually worth going for either for the ship or the special consoles that come with them.

That's just it - I don't know what the "some stuff" I have to do to get a new ship is.  The only things on the Event Calendar are Mirrors and Smoke (which i already finished), and going to the Summer Resort on Risa.  Is there something on Risa that will grant me a T6 ship?

Edit: Wait, wait, looking through menus, I see "Claim a Vorgon Xyfius Heavy Escort (T6)" project in the Reputation menu, of all places, but doing that requires "contributing" 1000 of yet another currency I have 0 of and don't know how to get because the game doesn't tell me.  So, again, it's just "this ship exists" rather than a way to actually get it.

Edit again: further research says that (a) the Lolwut Voucher currency I need 1000 of is connected to Risa, though I'm still not sure exactly how, and (b) the Vorgon Xyfius Heavy Escort was last year's prize, so I don't know why the game is offering me a ship that isn't actually available right now.  (And when I hit "Info" at the bottom of the Events page, it just tells me all about the Winter Event that ended months ago)

Edit edit edit: Okay, now I found it.  I just have to do a mission involving precision flying through hoops using a sub-standard jetpack, and I have to do it every single day for the next three and a half weeks to earn enough Lolwut Voucners to get the ship.  Ugh.

It's ok... Be calm... Don't move your arms or legs, just relax or you'll sink faster.. Welcome to the wonderful world of the STO Interface. The multitude of windows and currencies closing in on you are a normal part of the newb experience. See! I knew it wasn't just me that got lost gets lost in all those windows.

OK so.. First, you are going to need a ton more EC's for Fleet T6's because you have to buy Fleet Modules and they cost in the tens of millions. You will eventually have 10's of millions if you keep playing and make some effort to earn/save EC's.

Event ships.. You're too late for this one. There'll be more.. I wanted that Dorito ship! The Science ship that looks like a flying Dorito that you may have seen in game. WHen the next Event rolls around, do what it says (do thing X for X amount of days) and turn in what you get for doing what it says (in the Rep window you got LUCKY and found) for those X amount of days and you will get an Event T6. This is the first time I've had a shot at one - I never ended up logging in for enough days in the past, or, I was ... sinking in windows and learning my way out or whatever. Anyway, *anyone* can easily get these Event ships and they are normally pretty decent to really nice - you just have to wait for the next Event, do what it says to do, and dump your daily loot into the Rep window that you discovered.

As for farming Dil,... I'm going to leave you out in the wilderness just like everyone did with ME. I will tell you that you can find plenty of ways to do it and that getting Dil isn't that hard OR time consuming once you find a method that fits your playstyle. Posting Dil/Questionite/other important currency farming methods just seems bad juju. No matter how you do it, it's not a fast process to get a Z-store T6 if you aren't paying cash. It takes 300 +/- Dil for 1 Zen and it takes 2.4k(on sale)/3k (normally), Zen, for a ship, and, 4.8/6k Zen for a ship bundle, and, you can only refine 8k of Dil a day max even if you are rolling it. It takes time. The GOOD news is.. Every toon on your account can use these ships - Same with Event ships. Only 1 toon can use Fleet T6's or T6's that are in the Auction Exchange for amounts of EC that you won't see for a lonnnnng time.

No matter how you do it, if you aren't paying cash to instantly get what you want, it is going to take time. Even the event ships take like 4- 6 weeks of patience, and, you have to wait for the next Event to roll around. The GOOD news is... You don't need a T6 to learn the game or to run any Normal queue in the game. With some practice you can probably run all the Advanced ones, too. It's not bad learning on a T5.. I think it's a good thing. I don't regret the months I spent in mine.

~~~~~
Here's some more food for thought.. When I first started the game I made 5 newbs. I'd level a toon and then make a newb to find out how the different builds play. By the time I got done leveling 5 newbs I had a LOT more resources than when I started the game. I also had a much, much, much much better idea what I Wanted.
It IS all about getting a T6... but that isn't anything you have to be in any kind of hurry for.. ya know?
... wait, what do you mean I can't get the current event ship now?  I just spent an hour running around the game and searching the Internet looking for the actual steps to get that ship.  Are the Lolwut Voucher missions going away before I can spend the next month doing them?  (Edit: Oh, I see it.  Ends on the 20th.  I can only do 16 more days worth rather than the 24 I need)
... gah.
I don't know where I'm going to get tens of millions of ECs.  I thought I was doing pretty good for myself with the half a million I already had (which is down to 200k, because I had to replace some way outdated gear on my ship and character, which I hoped would help with the exploding, but didn't).  I have 7 Fleet Marks, but I have no idea where I got them.  Even if I had the tens of millions of ECs, I don't know where to get Fleet Modules or how they relate to Fleet Marks and Fleet Credits.
I just checked the Dil/Zen exchange for the latest numbers: to get enough Zen for a T6 ship at the current prices, I need to get over 700,000 Dilithium, which will take me over three months to refine even if I had enough Dil right now).  And at 1000-ish Dil a mission, 738,000 is an absurdly large number.
I understand "taking a while", but ... gah, there doesn't even seem to be a clear path from here to there.
Meanwhile, I guess I'll "just play", where "just play" means "my ship keeps getting destroyed in every single space battle, making missions long and frustrating and aggrivating, which is why I want a new ship in the first place."
You are playing the game EXACTLY correctly. Now toughen up and find out where you're going wrong  : p By the time you learn that, you should be ready for a T6.
: D
Honestly, you can do eet. In a T5. And be wiser when you get your first T6.
Getting a T6 doesn't automatically make the game easy, by the way. You'll probably explode just as much in a T6 right now if you are even high enough level to pilot one.
If anyone can walk into the game and get a T6 right off without paying cash, hats off to them for sure.
My character is level 58.  I have mostly XI-XIII defense-oriented gear on my T5 defense-oriented ship.  What more do I need to not explode all the time?  "git gud noob" is not advice I can work with.
I am pretty sure I saw posted right here on Titan, somewhere, that STO is an 'easy' game. So, what's YOUR problem??
Teasing.. ofc..
STO is Not an easy game. I didn't think it was as a newb and I don't think so now. I have no idea how people are getting some of the parses I see. But, I breeze through Any mish or Normal queue and most Advanced queues - something I often Exploded doing in the past. Just read back in this thread! I couldn't even figure out the front of my ship from the back sometimes.
Encouragement aside.. If you want written directions on how to win the game... Here is a tip. A real solid build that can take damage and put it out would include a Science ship and this equipment: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:wQRf6X8KeNIJ:sto.gamepedia.com/Quantum_Phase_Applications&num=1&hl=en&gl=us&strip=1&vwsrc=0
Next, pick any rep gear weapons/console combo that looks fun to you and get the marks/tokens for them, buy them, and then equip them.
If you want added safety, play an Engineer so you get Miracle Worker.
That link is the cached, Text version, btw... I dunno what they're doing at STO wiki but it sucks the bandwidth otherwise..
Also, check this out:
https://ufplanets.com/showthread.php?30768-Dark-s-Guide-to-Being-Lazy-Multiple-Command-Keybinds-and-You!
Keybinds are your Friend..
This is the most important part of that thread:
Space "GenSendMessage HUD_Root FirePhasers $$ +trayExecBytray 6 0 $$ +trayexecbytray 6 1 $$ +Power_Exec Distribute_Shields"
'Space', above, is meant to be the Spacebar key - it can be any key you want. The 6 0 and 6 1 are tray locations - 6 0 equals tray 5, location 1.. It's Cryptic, don't ask... FirePhasers fires alllll weapons AND torps.. Distribute shields does what you think it would - it distributes powers to shields when they are damaged - a good thing to have hotkeyed.
Here is a pr0h tip.. Only have 'GenSendMessage HUD_Root FirePhasers' on ONE hotkey your finger is used to hitting most. Ditto for 'Power_Exec Distribute_Shields'. This will result in your hotkeys firing off faster and your weapons cycling most efficiently. The idea is to not have them interfere with firing off powers when they pop - so you can fire off your powers asap, and, you want your weapons to cycle as efficiently as possible.
For example.. I always want to hit my damage enhancing hotkeys that are on low recharge - as soon as they pop. So, I put them all on one (or more, depending on who I'm playing) hotkey(s) and I spam that/those hotkey(s). On that/those hotkeys - I don't have anything but Space(or whatever key) "+trayExecBytray 6 0 $$ +trayexecbytray 6 1" (6 2, etc)
Just copy/paste $$ +trayexecbytray 6 1 - until you have all your hotkeys defined, or, you run out of space. You can fire off, like.... 6 hotkeys from your trays with this custom hotkey? Max? Something like that.
Examples:
Space "GenSendMessage HUD_Root FirePhasers $$ +trayExecBytray 6 0 $$ +trayexecbytray 6 1"
When I hit Spacebar, all my weapons activate and so does whatever is in tray 5, slot 1 and tray 5 slot 2. This is good for if you can't fit all your tray hotkeys you want to activate on ONE hotkey and just have a couple of your slowest recharging fast-recharge powers leftover. Hit this whenever you acquire a new target. Or a version of it that doesn't activate anything but weapons.
f/x:
Space "GenSendMessage HUD_Root FirePhasers"
I really don't know how much spamming FirePhasers interferes with weapons cycling most efficiently. Not much to not at all, I think.
+Power_Exec Distribute_Shields is the one that will suck your hotkey speed down. It pops often and takes time to activate and nothing else happens until it's done. So... you want to have it all by itself OR with stuff that doesn't pop as often/isn't as time crucial to fire off.
f/x
Space "+Power_Exec Distribute_Shields"
or
Space "+trayExecBytray 6 0 $$ +trayexecbytray 6 1 $$ +Power_Exec Distribute_Shields"
6 0 and 6 1 in this example are not fast popping powers. Why would you even add anything to Distribute Shields? Maybe for the same reason as combining something with FirePhasers - you couldn't fit everything on... the hotkey below. AND you want to minimize the number of hotkeys you're spamming.
AnyKeyboardKey "+trayExecBytray 6 0 $$ +trayexecbytray 6 1+trayExecBytray 6 2 $$ +trayexecbytray 6 3+trayExecBytray 6 4 $$ +trayexecbytray 6 5"
...Which is the primo fast way to fire off the maximum amount of powers at once.
... If that makes sense.
It will, in game, if it doesn't now.
That's not the greatest hotkey guide in the world I tried to somewhat quickly write, above, but, I hope it beats  "git gud noob"  : )
I also have 2 of the below for all my toons (the number of trayExecBytray in them varies...).
AnyKeyboardKey "+trayExecBytray 6 0 $$ +trayexecbytray 6 1+trayExecBytray 6 2"
In one of them I place all of my < 2 minute recharge Shield heals.
In the other I place all of my < 2 minute recharge Hull heals.
Spam as needed.
