My character is level 58.  I have mostly XI-XIII defense-oriented gear on my T5 defense-oriented ship.  What more do I need to not explode all the time?  "git gud noob" is not advice I can work with.

Did the hotkey thing help at all? They really do make a difference. In about every game I've played and this one's no exception.

There's a lot of relatively fast repopping buttons to mash by 60 and by grouping them into logical groups that your fingers can find fast it will boost your efficiency and probably make things more fun, too.

That gear in the link (that you likely can't use and don't want to make a new toon for and that probably doesn't interest you, otherwise) is the best (or pretty darn close) non weapons mish gear in the game, I think. Overall. Both of my Science ship guys use it.

In case This helps... I'm going to get that Event T6 tonite, finally.. I don't even have a captain for it..lol. I have no Cruiser captains anymore. The one I had I rerolled into Sci. Right before the Summer Event.. I used to be just like you.. gimme a T6! Now, I have them laying around in the garage unused. You'll get there.

I don't know if the sale will be going on when I log on next, but, if it is I guess I better pick up at least 2 more toon slots so I can use that ship..

Here's some more tips.. There are a lot of Duty Officer buffs that can be useful and you get up to 5 - some things you can stack up on, in other words, you can have 3 of the same benefit and it stacks. Like torpedo recharge redux .. Science Team redux, Engineering Team redux. I have Engineering team (hull heal) and Science team (shield heal) recharging in like 15 seconds due to Duty Offficers in one build.

Batteries.. Use batteries. Weapons, Shield, Hull heal. Whatever flavors are your preference.

Bridge Officers also May have Space Innates that give you bonuses in Space. Get those. When you can. An easy/cheap find is Humans. They all get Leadership.

Set bonuses on Rep gear can be good. Fleet gear can also be good. Mish gear can be good. My highest parsing build has all Fleet and Mish gear in his Non weapons slots and mostly Rep gear for weapons. With stuff like event consoles sprinkled in.

It's just whatever makes sense to You. when it comes to gear.

What else....

STO has DR. Usually 2 consoles of one benefit is the max you want otherwise diminishing returns will kick in. A lot of people will probably tell you to only use (1).

Hmmm... what else..

Spam that Distribute Shields from that hotkey thing I posted. (Assuming consoles get hotkeys..). It really makes a difference. Just don't add it into a hotkey with stuff that you want to fire off FAST because it will slow down whatever hotkey you put it in. Do use it though, and often.

Make sure you keep your shields as high as possible. Once they go down you're in trouble. Keep an eye on hull, too. Don't wait until you smell smoke to hit your heal hotkeys... hehe.

There are Doff mishes that give various Space buffs. You have to hit the Personnel tab to find those mishes and only some of them are of this kind. It's just an icing on the cake kinda thing.. buttons to hit while you're thinking what else you can do to stop exploding.

That's it for now! If I think of anything else...

I'm on the PS4, so there's no way to keybind anything.  All weapons fire with the touch of a single button by default - R2 toggles on all beam and cannon weapons, so you don't even have to keep hitting it, and R1 fires any torpedoes or mines that are ready.  Plus, all my Shield and Hull resturation powers are set to auto-exec when my Shields or Hull hit certain levels (mostly 50%, though Miracle Worker is set to 25%).  Most of my Ship Traits and Equipment are geared to giving defensive bonuses.  Despite all that, it's hard to keep alive against bigger ships.

Also, I made it to level 60 since I last posted, partially through Duty Officer side missions (which were only added to the PS4 version recently - they weren't there last time I played).  So except for getting a new T6 ship, there's very few "big" things to look forward to.

I was wondering if you'd get keybinds or not. Yay for that wasted effort. That sucks! that consoles don't get that. Somehow. You don't have to hotkey FireAllWeapons on PC, either, a single button will already to it, but, it's a good thing to be able to Add to hotkeys.

The shield/hull autoexec doesn't sound like something I'd like, either, and I don't want my Miracle Worker popping on it's own for sure.

You didn't mention DistributeShields. On PC there is a premade hotkey for this and there's something on the screen I can click for it, too. Spamming this really makes a difference in keeping your shield strength up.

One trick I used to use on Large ships in my tiny Escort was to get behind them and dog their rear shields. Don't let them shake you off (this requires you micro manage your speed and turns) - stay on those back shields until they fade and you're chewing hull - meanwhile that big lumbering boat in front of you is trying to get his best weapons turned around to point at you. Good clean fun.

The console version of STO kinda seems is unappealing to me from everything I've read about it. The first worst thing about it to me was that console and PC players can't interact.

Accidental keypress Random Screenie..

OK so, there's probably no Lost in Space fans here.. I never was either but I happen to have watched the entire series about 8 - 10 billion times and it's grown on me. STO doesn't seem to get much character creator recognition but I think this is a pretty decent representation of Dr. Smith in the Star Trek universe:

Note the exquisitely narrow shoulders.. pot belly.. receding hairline.. the double chin kept at bay..

Is Tarsi a hottie or what? The correct answer is: Yes. Maybe due to she reminds me of a sexy dark elf I once knew.

The first worst thing about it to me (ed: console play) was that console and PC players can't interact.

TG, if you were in the Fleet several of my toons are in (I would gladly invite you) the leaders would love to whisk you away into their Elite Ground game farming world until you were rich and then show you how to equip your ship. It would probably be good advice, too. They both get 50k+ parses.

It's too bad that Console and PC can't play together. I dunno if they can even chat.

Probably not.

I'm technically in a fleet already, but it's always inactive when I log in.  I'm usually the only person on.  (And the chat system is awkward at best anyway.  The only time I used it was when the game bugged out last year and nobody could actually do their missions)

Without getting a new ship as a short- to medium-term goal, I'm not quite sure what to do with myself in the game.  I guess I can finish all the stories now that I'm level 60.  For some reason the game once again started giving me XP the way it had prior to 50 -i.e., one level per mission, more or less - so I leveled from 52 to 60 in only a couple of days, much more quickly than I'd expected.

!!

Nice.

I didn't think that whole keyboard thing through. Obviously.

My Rom is in a pretty dead Fleet but it's an ancient one in STO terms and somehow we almost are tier 3 in K-13. My mainiest main and first toon is in a not very active fleet but it has a fair amount of nice people as regulars and so I stay. The last Fleet I got into is the most active. They're fairly ancient too and have some friendly people in it who when they are online are nonstop trying to get new players into Ground Elites which they say will pay for their Space Game.

I dunno what to do in STO either. Goof off. Try new weapons and other ship gear. Try other ships. Try other Captain builds. Try other Captains. I've already got Sci/Eng/Tac captains who are piloting warbirds/escorts/sci ships/soon to be cruisers again and who are using 3 completely different sets of gear and who don't all have the same Skill/Boff choices. I'll probably try more powers and I want to try a Klingon and a bird of prey at some point but he won't be KDF. I have tried KDF and FED, while we're on that subject..

Then there is tradeskilling and playing the market... which is good for when you're too tired and braindead to do much else or is good to do over some early morning caffeine, or, whenever boosting EC's seems convenient.

What else..

STO is probably about as winnable as any other mmo. Some people play just to be in the STO Universe. Like with CO.

*shrug*

Ohhh here's a tip for you in regards of something to do. Don't just save up for your T6... Start shopping now. They aren't organized all that great, is one reason...lol

Another reason is, you don't want to be a dummy like me and save your Zen for a sale and then the sale comes and you have enough Zen but haven't picked a ship out yet.. Not something you want to decide at the last minute..

What can you look for? Consoles is one main thing. Some will do things you have no interest in whatsoever. If you get lucky you might get one that says to you 'that's Exactly what I was missing'. Consoles are a good thing to shop for in a new ship, assuming you are not getting a console-less Fleet T6. (Fleet T6's not only come with no special console but they also are only usable by ONE toon on your account - this is why, in STO terms, they are so 'cheap'. They should Not seem cheap to you now but they will someday, in comparison to the other T6's).

Weapons slots.. This is another good thing to look for. Pilot Escorts get FIVE (yum) forward weapons slots and the one I got just happened to have the Perfect console for me at the time and it's still a pretty darn good one for me. *cha-ching* I was sold.

How does it look? The Fleet T6 Sci ship I probably like most, statwise, is butt ugly. To me. And I probly wouldn't fly it just based on that.

Hrrrmm.. Then there are things like Turn Rate.. Extra power to  ... shields/weapons/auxillary.. hull size, shield size..

If you're anything like me it takes a fair amount of time to choose a ship. So it's not a bad idea to start now.

AND THEN...

Do you get a ship, or do you get a whole bundle? If you get a bundle, you get 3 ships for the price of 2 that all your (properly aligned...) toons can use. You get 3 consoles that work on all 3 ships. For me, it has worked out so far, that I only like 1 ship in a bundle so I have not gotten any bundles yet.

There's tons of stuff to shop for too depending on how immersed you are in the game and where that immersion lead you.

The Fleet Ships don't look like the easy ones to me.  While the regular T6s cost a lot of Zen (which will, in turn, cost a crapton of Dilithium), at least I know where to get Dilithium.  I don't even know where to begin getting Fleet Marks and Fleet Modules and Fleet Credits and Fleet Tsotchkes.  (I mean, I guess they come from the Fleet?  Somehow?  But I only joined this Fleet because they invited me out of the blue.  And that's probably why it's now dead, just filled with people who didn't really want to be there, either.  So there's no Fleet activity to be able to get Fleet Euros and Fleet Lolwuts from)

I do already know what ship I want, so that makes things easier, there's just no clear (and relatively short, or at least medium) path from where I am to get that ship.  There's only The Very Long Path (farming Dil), The Ridiculously Long Path (hoping the Fleet wakes up enough for me to start collecting Fleet Strokens), and The Literally Impossible Path (the Event Ship which I can't get anymore, which isn't even the ship I want).

I'd play the market more, but I don't like the Auction interface.  Specifically, I don't like that there's apparently no way to see average or lowest selling price from the Selling interface.   It makes it incredibly awkward to be competitive.  I have to either just guess randomly at prices, or spend a lot of time going in and out of my inventory, the buying interface, the selling interface, and a Notepad program on my laptop (and/or an actual piece of paper).

(Also, SOMETHING is draining my ECs at a fantastic rate.  From over 500k, I'm down to under 20k, and I didn't actually consciously spend them on anything.  Do Admiralty projects cost ECs?)

I dunno what's draining your EC's. Maybe you're warping to mishes and that's the cab fare. I can't think of any other thing that will automatically deduct EC's, right now.

If you don't like your Fleet, try another one. The three I'm in have some fairly significant differences that are worthy additions to the STO experience in their own ways. The most active Fleet I'm in and the one that I probably like the most spam invited me - and then they gave me the ability to spam invite anyone else AND (best part) my alts. Console STO is new so you have that to deal with - there's a lot of 'old' Fleets in STO.

Pricing in STO's Auction is like all others, in time you'll be pro. Just give it time. As with many of the problems you're experiencing. Tradeskilling is a source of EC's in STO. If you're into that at all, get a skill up that interests you and start selling stuff. People buy my stuff every single day. Took me a LONG time and a LOT of effort to get started. But. So what. I was playing the game already, anyway. The last few times I've logged in that's all I've done is a lil R&D to keep the shelves stocked.

If you want to know what gear everyone else is using just get a parser and it will tell you. It will even tell you what powers they are using.

All the secrets to this game are right there you just have to play. Maybe do a lil googling. I'll keep trying to help out. Others may try and sprinkle you with their wisdom, too. As long as you like being in the STO universe and you're having fun, all will come. Like ANY game. The secret to being the best player is liking the game the most.

Get out there and fire phasers, mister! Arm those photon torpedoes. Grab a fire extinguisher, I smell smoke....

Random Space tip..

On PC you can adjust your preset ship power levels (shields/weapons/aux/engines) manually. Usually I (ymmv - the point is, you get a Choice so why not use it) like to set mine so I have Full power to weapons and then put whatever is left to shields, for example. For my Sci ships I have Aux cranked up, and then power to shields.

Something else about power levels... When you get a new ship, on PC, you have to set the power levels to what you want at least once otherwise you get what they picked for you.. On PC that means about half power to weapons or so (going from memory..) and most likely you don't want half power weapons. Always hated remembering that tip after X amount of pve's where I was wondering why my dps was so crummy after getting a new ship.

Hey, here's another Random Space tip...

Mines.

Mines are great for when you have things next to you that you don't want to have next to you and they don't even have an energy cost. Put that saved energy towards bigger/more Cannons.. or Beams.. Unlike torps you don't even have to aim them. They won't give you (a) constant (trickle of) dps like a turret/omni, but, they do pack a decent punch when they do hit and some of them have effects. I'm using Bio-Moleculars from Rep on one of my guys. They were fun to use when I was doing those Random Space battle things and even managed to be useful. While waiting for the next wave to pop... circle around and make a minefield. This was during my 'dog the back shields of the huge cow ships' phase. Good times.

Do you have 5 Doffs on Active Space Duty, giving you helpful boosts? There are all kinds of boosts to be had this way. I'm constantly tinkering with mine.

Anyway, carry on!

ewww-EEEE-ewww

queue pop!

Traits...

Another thing to help keep you from exploding is everything under the Traits tab.

There's more choices available as they're earned. There's some nice choices in the Rep system that you get as you level up through that system and Starship traits can be Bought and earned that can be very helpful. Also, every time you unlock 15 points in a new Specialization - you get a new Starship Trait.. I'm working on Temporal for one of my Escort guys just so he can get that 'you get buffed while going backwards' Trait.

Trait choices can really make a difference. They're right up there with getting a next tier level ship.

They can Also Reset Themselves when you get a new ship. Like with Power Levels... So, be careful of that, too.

~~~
Oh, and on the subject of Specializations...!
You just about cannot go wrong by maxxing out Pilot. There are so many goodies in there to help keep you alive and some damage buffs, and a nice turn rate buff, too. Maxx out Pilot and you will be much harder to kill.
Admiralty and Duty Officer projects MAY cost Energy Credits to engage in.  The price is usually listed in the mission card before you accept it.  (You might have to scroll sideways to see all of the costs for a Duty Officer mission.)
Another thing that costs ECs is the Transwarp button in the Mission Planner on the right side of the screen.  Use Auto-Navigate when in the same Sector block, or fly to the border of the Sector block and navigate there yourself to save on EC.  (The sector and list parts of the map are clickable.)
If saving EC is important to you, put the bulk of what you want to save in your Account Bank.  EC sitting in the Account Bank cannot be used, but remember to give yourself a modest "walking around" purse (200,000 EC should be enough to keep you going for Duty/Admiralty and Transwarp use.)  When you collect a million EC on top of the 200,000, deposit that million and keep going.
Also, I've read your other posts... have you considered using a Starship Upgrade Requisition?  It boosts your Tier 5 ship to near Tier 6 stats, adds the ability to equip Tier XII-XIV equipment, and adds Starship Mastery slots you can unlock with continued use (but not the 5th slot that grants a free Trait.)  With a T5-U ship, you're 80-90% of the way to a Tier 6 ship.  Nothing that can be gained in a couple of weeks, but far easier than the 3000 Zen for a ship or 6000-12000 to pull down a bundle.  They cost 700 Zen -OR- someone can sell you one on the Exchange for EC.  They're in the tune of 15 million or so, but at least it's something that can be had with EC.
Last I checked you could equip any level of gear, Mark XIV included to any tier ship, I remember running content in a t1 ship equipped with endgame gear as a challenge. We did a t1 and t2 only CCA and won.
So what would you guys recommend for a brand new player, what should I roll? How are the TOS Starfleet, Starfleet, Romulan and Klingon starts different? Is any of the careers easier or harder for first-time players? Anything I should beware of?
I did look into upgrading my ship to T5-U, but I'm pretty sure that Negh'Var Heavy Battle Cruiser is not one that can be upgraded, only Fleet T5s and Zen-store purchased T5s.  (The Fleet Negh'Var can, but I don't have that version)
I never use Transwarp (at least, not to missions - does Transwarping to Q'onoS cost EC?  It doesn't say it does, and I've been double-checking everything I do), so that's not where it's going.  Might be Admiralty and Duty Officer missions, but I checked and I don't see any costs for those, let alone tens or hundreds of thousands of ECs)
My traits are - and, for the most part, always have been - all set to the most defensive things I can set them to: Defense, Resistance, +Max HP, +Max Shields, etc.  My Engineering Consoles are likewise defensively-oriented.  I usually set my power levels to emphasize shields, followed by weapons.   I just feel... fragile... for some reason.
have you considered using a Starship Upgrade Requisition?  It boosts your Tier 5 ship to near Tier 6 stats
T5U's are pretty decent. They don't have the number of consoles you have in a T6 (they have 10, Most T6's have 11) and they don't have as good as stats but they are the closest thing you can get to a T6 without having a T6. They aren't cheap to a newb, either, but they are cheaper than any form of T6. And then, in ascending cost, there are Fleet T6's, and then Zen store ones, and then Auction house ones. Zen store ships being the only ships that are Bind to Account, not Bind to Character.
Thing is, can you upgrade your ship? Can all T5's become T5U's? I don't think so. Only 1 purchasable one I have is T5-U upgradeable (I upgraded it when I was not super EC poor, it was worth it) and the free T5 you get as you level up I don't think is T5-U upgradeable, either. I hope I'm wrong!
Last I checked you could equip any level of gear, Mark XIV included to any tier ship, I remember running content in a t1 ship equipped with endgame gear as a challenge. We did a t1 and t2 only CCA and won.
I was going to mention Upping your Marks..
Mark XIV weapons are kinda a lot better than Mk XII or anything below.. It's a no-brainer upgrade. Experimental upgrade kits are good for Mark upgrading as far as ones that cost you Dil to use. And then there's the Rom upgrade kits you get from Admiralty and those Event ones I forget the name of atm - neither of those cost dil to use and add a lot of research points towards a Mark upgrade. I upgrade Weapons to MK XIV before anything else. Also, it's a good idea in the beginning, when Mark upgrades are super expensive to you, to take advantage of Double Research weekends. So you spend half as much.
It's worth re-mentioning that MK upgrading is expensive no matter how you do it. So, be relatively sure you're happy with what you have before you upgrade. I didn't go from MK XII to XiV for a lonng time but I do it asap, now.
Also, kinda like Zee is saying, there are lots of things that make a tough ship - not just the ship. Trait choices make a big difference as well as your equipment which includes what MK it is at (especially weapons), your Active Space Duty Doffs and.... the stuff already written up there and stuff not mentioned yet - all makes a noticeable difference.
While you are busy figuring out all the things you can do to kit out your T6, you're putting back some Dil to buy one, hopefully. It will likely take you about as long to figure out how to properly kit a T6 as it will to save for one.
Honestly, don't be in a hurry. The better you kit out your T5 and the more you learn about the game before you finally get your First t6, the happier you will be with that First t6. Meanwhile, save. Everytime you run a Normal queue - it gives you like 480 dil and Anyone can do Normals. If you can't, you can be carried... and likely no one will notice.. Every time you run a queue you get marks, too - Hourlies, Dailies, and Trading in 500 marks for 5,000 zen are all ways you can use the Rep system, (which you should be progressing in, anyway!) to gain easy marks/dil/Space Combat practice. Do them daily and you'll not only get the Traits you need but the Dil you need AND the Practice you need.
You have a lot to chew on. I just hope playing the console version of the game isn't what kills it for you. STO seems very keyboardy and Very 1,000 interface windowsy. [quote
You get more Traits as you level in the Rep system. Way better ones. (Is there anything else that gives new Traits as you level, anyone?) You can see what they are in the... Status? window. The window that shows what you get from the Rep system for every tier you attain.
Also, I highly doubt you have Any starship traits yet. Those also help.
And Max Pilot!
So what would you guys recommend for a brand new player, what should I roll? How are the TOS Starfleet, Starfleet, Romulan and Klingon starts different? Is any of the careers easier or harder for first-time players? Anything I should beware of?
It's hard to make a bad choice EXCEPT for do you play Klingon Defense Force or Federation.. I wouldn't make a KDF toon as my first toon. Fed is easier.
Other than that I would read all the advice we're trying to pour onto TG. It's a lot more than I got when I started! hehe
STO can have (did for me!) a learning curve that makes one seek help.
The main difference between Tac, Eng, Sci, is their innate powers which you can wiki or see in game. Sci is more team oriented (especially in the sense that it's less You oriented), Tac is more DPS oriented, and Engineers get the best 'oh crap' button as an innate.
Other than that they're pretty much the same asfaik. Check their Innates for what looks best to you.
