There was apparently an update today.  No new real content (still no Brushfire), but they swapped out the Privateer Lockbox for the Infinity Lockbox, and added new ships (well, "new" to console) to the Lobi Crystal Consortium, including the Advanced Obelisk Carrier.  New ships are appearing on the exchange, and the two T6 Carriers I want have dropped in price ever so slightly (since both are in the Infinity Lockbox, and one is now at the Lobi store) - the Jem'Hadar carrier is 55 million (instead of 60), and the Herald Carrier is down to 350 million (instead of 500).  I hope that trend continues.

The prices on the Exchange are weird right now.  The top-priced stuff is going down, but the lower-end stuff (the Mirror Vo'Quvs and Mirror Escorts, which I got for under 200k) are all 500k and rising.

And the Phoenix Prize Pack guy is gone again.  Ah well.

Oh... and as I'm typing this... there's another APU for 175,000!  Grabbing it and unpacking for the Romulan it this time (the other two sold for 1.5 million each, ten times what I paid for them, so I'm up to over 7 million ECs), if only for the Admiralty bonus.  (Though I might actually use it for her)

lol what a racket....!

I've heard of Lobi and the Lobi store but that's it. I always assumed Lobi came from lockboxes and have no idea how to access the Lobi store. Did we just switch roles? You know other stuff about the game I dunno, too. Like that Captain stuff (I knew Kirk's back) and I never really paid attention to Mish ships before - as in, trying to get one.

Hey, that reminds me.. Where'd Exxar go? I offered him some gear and a Fleet invite here and then didn't log on for like 3 days (or something like this... sorry!) but I did accept his Friend's invite and sent him some mail in-game.

Yup, like Tarmalune Trade Bars in Neverwinter Online, and Drifter Salvage in Champions Online, Lobi Crystals are a lockbox-only currency designed to reward people for opening lockboxes consistently.  You can only get Lobi Crystals by opening lockboxes with Master Keys (MT or off the Exchange.)  In STO, you can open the Lobi Store by double clicking on the Lobi Crystals themselves as an item.

Lobi in the 100's and less is only good for consumables.  For a Tier 6 ship, expect to collect 600-900 to earn that.  You typically get Lobi in small amounts (most often 10 or less, rarely up to 40) per lockbox opened.

Like Dilithium, Lobi is locked to your account.  Can't trade it or sell it on the Exchange.

There's also a shop on Drozana Station, so you can look over the wares even if you don't have any crystals to trade.  That's how I know they added new ships to its selection.

Also, my Romulan Tactical Officer is now Level 60 (and still wearing the civilian outfit she had on her home planet).  Next, to get my TOS Vulcan Science Officer (he's totally different from Spock - he's blond!) to level 60, too. (My Klingon main, for the record, is an Engineering Officer)

Variety is a good thing. Although, I didn't get as varietist as you when it comes to races. The only Fed race that gets a (very small..) Space bonus is Humans so I've stuck with them 3 out of 5 times so far and probly will, going forward. I like playing my Andorian most, though. I mean if we're going to fantasize, why be human.. Because of the bonus. Only reason.

Roms and Klingons get a Space bonus? I forget.. I think Roms do. I know you can get ... gah.. what's it called.. Bridge Officers with... Superior Operative? Covert Operative? An even better Space bonus than Leadership (humans).

Who doesn't like Engineer's Miracle Worker. Photonic Fleet from Science is decent and even decenter since it got buffed recently but I can't think of anything else noteworthy in Sci. Tac? Deeps. My tac toons feel deepsier. More deepsy?

Should be smooth sailing for some solid playtime this weekend. Looking very much forward to it. Drozana Station.... I had no idea.. Learned another something new.. And the whole story on Lobi, as far as that goes, is new. I always assumed it was lockbox swag so I tuned it out but it's interesting to know how it works, now.

By the time I run Brushfire it'll be on console! Passing up that easy spec point... shame on me. I think we're on week 2 rewards, starting today, on pc. Depending on what the set bonuses end up being I might try that gear on a sci ship I'm retooling. With maybe some Nausican mish gear or some rep gear.

Still here, well at least lurking the forum :)

I was in the game for a couple of days after your offer, but I'd say I hit your period when you were not in the game (remember such a post from you a couple of days back) and then SWL snagged me again. Will definitively get back once SWL lets go.

Thanks for the offer! (don't remember thanking you before)

I was playing and posting like every day, until then.. Things picked up with work and I just totally got out of game mode. Such crummy timing! Sorry about that. I'd have shot you a Fleet invite but I had to have a toon name and I just had an @, and, I didn't know what level newb gear to send ya.

You're welcome for the offer and it still stands just sorry I missed you.

I'm not nearly as active with STO lately but I have been actively playing the Railroad Tycoon version of it.

I'm currently up to ~ 500 million EC (I never can seem to break this..) and nearly 1 million Dil (hellloooooo Phoenix Boxes).  I even have 1k Zen socked away.

On the subject of currencies... When I was actively playing CO I never would consider spending Q on anything but buying Zen. In STO, they have gotten me to spend quite a lot of Dil... (their version of Q).

Man.  I wish I had that much.  I have 11 million EC and 1000 Zen, but the ships I want are still so far away.

I've been told that the secret to making money fast is crafting, but nothing I craft sells for anything at the Exchange. (And I mean anything.  They don't sell at all, regardless of how low I price them)

I don't buy much and have been at it a long time (relative to those totals) is my secret when it comes to EC. I get a trickle from the Exchange but it's a constant trickle.. I probably sell my stuff too low and am probably selling the 'wrong' stuff but I get my trickle. Started out by making 1 piece of gear that I knew I always wanted to have in my ships at the time, cut the price to 1/5th what I saw in the Exchange (and was still selling things for ~ double what they cost me) , sold a few, and went from there.

I've been impressed with your Zen farming up to this point. You're already almost halfway to your first Zen T6 when they're on sale. I know Zen ships aren't your thing, but, that's still pretty good.

One thing I liked about STO from the start is that I can do no-brainer/non-action stuff like playing the market. One step up from vegging out in front of the T.V.. I have to be at least somewhat in the zone to do queue's or play CO or even running mishes. Sometimes I'm not in the zone at all but I don't want to TV veg either. STO's still got plenty to do on those days, too.

Sounds like Console's Exchange has it's own quirks and will take it's own figuring out. I mean, look at the ship flopping you've been doing. Anything less than 2 million for any T5 on PC is cheap. PC's Exchange is consistently active is one thing it has going for it. Sometimes more than others but I can't remember a 24 hour period going by that hasn't sold me something on the Exchange, for some months now.

I was going to scroll down to find it but I can't atm. I seem to remember 11 million EC being a Lot, to you, recently! hehe. You're doing ok..... 1k Zen for how long you've been playing seems a lot to me.

If you ever get to the day where you're plunking down a half a billion for lockbox T6's on a regular basis then that would be a feat.. I can afford (1) but .... nooooo way. Took too long..

There are a few Zen-buyable ships that I've been considering, but I still need 2000 more Zen to get them.  That's probably another couple of weeks worth of Dil grinding.

They're doing the Tholian Red Alert event this weekend, so I tried it, and ... I can't say I enjoyed it.  Fought a bunch of really, really powerful ships, died a bunch of times (though this was on my Romulan, whose ship is more of a glass cannon than my Klingon's), all for the reward of Literally Nothing.  (Then again, we did fail.  But I thought there'd be at least some partial rewards for completing the 1/1 objective and 4/5 of the other objective, instead of ... nothing).  Unless the reward for Full Success is really, really, REALLY good (thousands of Dil, hundreds of Marks of my choice, or something along those lines), it's a waste of time to try and aaaaalmost succeed.

Edit: Gave in and bought one Lockbox Key.  Got... crap out of the lockbox (a ground trait that I don't really care about, though if I'm lucky I can sell it for 10 million EC)  And now I'm down to 970 Zen.   Ah well.   I've just confirmed my hate of gambling.

Looks like Vonph Dreadnoughts are coming down in price, so that's good.  They now start at only 300,000,000.  ("Only", he says)

I believe if you fail, it doesn't trigger a 30 minute cooldown, so you're free to enter another Tholian Queue.  If you do succeed, that's it for a half hour.  But yeah, Star Trek Online isn't too big on consolation prizes.  (On the PC version they tend to give away a lot of stuff over the course of the year, so it's forgiveable.)  Losing at a PvE queue (Red Alerts, Featured Missions, and other queues) grants nothing.

Lockboxes are the bane or blessing of most folks.  The drop rates are unfortunate, as to make sure people keep 'buying' they have a lot of junk.  But on the flip side, there's a healthy market in selling Master Keys on the Exchange because of that.  (Some think it's exploitative, but if you cut your price 10-20% cheaper than the lowest asking price, they sell quickly and keep eagle eyed Free players happy.  And a 10-20% cut is still a few million ECs if you're short on those.)  But regular weekly play of Daily Missions at Level 50-60 gains a million or two Energy Credits anyway per week (what you'd get on the Exchange if keys aren't selling well), so... whatever works.

Edit: Gave in and bought one Lockbox Key.

These have no allure whatsoever to me. I can't imagine spending any stipend on them and they cost 5 million EC (each) on PC. These things *seem* targeted at 1.) People with plenty of disposable cash 2.) Gamblers that don't mind losing sooo much cash in STO or CO due to it's not as much cash as they could be losing elsewhere. 3.) People that have no idea they are likely going to have to open a ton of boxes to get anything they want.

I'm not criticizing you for buying one stinky key (that you probably got for at least half the price that's on PC) - just commentary.

But yeah, Star Trek Online isn't too big on consolation prizes.  (On the PC version they tend to give away a lot of stuff over the course of the year, so it's forgiveable.)  Losing at a PvE queue (Red Alerts, Featured Missions, and other queues) grants nothing.

You can lose a normal PVE queue and get no rewards? Interesting. I used to solo Borg Disconnecteds before they fixed the you can re-enter into the queue solo after getting kicked offline bug. How? It's un-losable. You literally cannot lose. The worst thing that can happen is you get less Marks than if you completed more of the objectives. I can't remember ever finishing a Normal pve queue and getting no rewards. Diminished rewards, yes.

I bought a couple of packs of keys when they were on sale recently. I'm not at all a fan of lock boxes in games, but I also had over 12k currency saved up from my LTS with no idea what to spend it on. I felt a little dirty, but only a little.

lol...

Were those the packs that came with the "Ultimate" item upgrades? If I had currency laying around everywhere and had nothing to do with it, I might have been tempted by those. Instant upgrade to mk xiv and gold, I think? I have Fleeties.. errr Fleetmates that have like Eeeeeverything of theirs mk xiv and gold. I wouldn't mind having ONE piece.. or two... ha.

I've devolved to depression era type values, in general, and, I don't have currency laying around that I don't know what to do with, so, they don't tempt me at all. I'm surprised that not only are they as sellable as they have been but that they continue to be. It's been a kinda curiosity to me since awhile.

I can't/am not trying to say anything bad about you or TG for buying them. I bought CO keys once too just to try it due to I could get a bunch at the time and everyone was telling me the junk I could sell from them would even out for what I was spending if ... I just bought enough keys.. Yeah..

I bought the one key with Zen. They're on sale, so I decided to see what the fuss was all about (and those "So-N-So@So-N-So has won a T6 ship!" messages keep popping up on my screen every two seconds, so I thought my chances were... better than they were).

Also, I completed the 10 Tour of Duty missions for the Klingon faction, which means it's going to take me days to refine all the Dil I just got, so I'll be able to replace that 100-ish Zen pretty quickly.  (Edit: in fact, I'm back up to over 1000 again already)

And with any luck, I'll be able to sell what I did win in the Exchange for a decent amount.  I got a ground trait, and I chose Molt, because (a) it goes for about 10 million in the exchange, and (b) in case it *doesn't* sell, it actually sounds useful.

Well.... the currency that's important to you is EC, for those hundreds of millions of EC costing ships.. 100 Zen buys you 1 key that's worth a semi-astronomical 5 million EC (on PC..) (for *1* key!). Soooo if console key prices are similar and you get 10 million EC out of your 1 key I'd say your flip mastery skills have triumphed once again  : )

The same with any MMO, there are three levels of selling loot.  (Example: 4 million avg. sale price for a Master Key on the Exchange)

Short the Average Price -- You take a hit on the sale by undercutting the lowest price and selling it for less than everyone else. (Sell your Master Key for 3.75 mil EC...)  However, you can turn out a sale in minutes.  Great when you have a quantity of items and looking to turn over quickly.

Set a Fair Price -- You price your item the same as everyone else.  (Sell yours for 4 million or a little higher, maybe 4.25.) When demand gets short and someone needs a quantity of items at any price, that's when you make the sale, but it'll take a few hours, maybe a day.

Go for Full Price -- You set a price on an item that costs more than a typical sale.  (Sell the key for 5 mil EC.)  Here, you'll wait a few days before it clears.  If you only have one item to sell and time isn't an issue, this may be your best tactic if you need a specific amount.  THAT, and you've done enough homework to know this is where the average price CAN hit when demand increases.

There's a fourth approach, but it doesn't work very well...

How does I Exchange? LULZ If you are unreasonable with your price, (Want key? 12,000,000 EC) then no one will buy it and the Exchange will return your listing unpurchased in 72 hours.  You're free to relist it for that much, of course, but it's wasted time.

This also happens with items that are 1-5 in quantity listed on the Exchange, so folks set the price to something ridiculous (the Exchange ceiling is 1.5 billion EC), then when it fails to sell, come down from that incrementally until a sale does happen.  Slightly more reasonable, but a lot of work to clinch a sale, for example, that recent Tier 6 Escort drop from an R&D Sale event that just ended recently.  Price? 1 billion EC.  But it's still gouging.  ("Because of scarcity, they'll pay what I ask" only works when folks have that many ECs to toss on such a thing, and to be honest, EC is simply not as useful in large quantities as Dil or Zen.)

Keys are only about 3 million on console, but severe undercutting is how I generally like to sell things on the Exchange, along with using non-round numbers, to make them stand out more.  Rather than 200,000, for example, I'll price something at 222,222 or 155,555.

What you said about really wanting EC more than Zen made me realize that buying a bunch of keys (especially right now, when they're on sale) and selling them would put me most of the way to a Jem'Hadar Carrier (I'd have well over 40 million).  Or I could use them to open Infinity Lockboxes and sell whatever I get - which may sell for more, but will probably also sell more slowly (but also has a slim chance of just getting me a ship directly).

It's all kind of a moot point right now, though, because my wife just bought Fortnight, so I don't know when I'm going to get to play STO again. :D

Yeah, when I hit Post, earlier, it dawned on me that you made out even better due to keys being on sale. "Only" 3 million EC for keys is still a lot (5 is nuts..). When I consider that people who are in the lockbox game consistently say that they are opening 100, 200, 300 lockboxes at one time..

It's all kind of a moot point right now, though, because my wife just bought Fortnight, so I don't know when I'm going to get to play STO again. :D

Well, I'd say that you gave STO a very fair trial! You were kinda ripping it up. When I'd been playing as long as you I was still having a hard time coming up with Rep EC's for leveling. You know, the paltry (and mostly refundable when you sell the gear you get) contribution amount of EC's that's required for Rep Dailies. I was even scraping for those funds, sometimes. You found your niche with ships, learned some game lore I didn't know.

Man, I had really been into STO before/when you and Exxar started up and then IRL just started sucking the life out of me.. Crummy timing! Too bad that console and PC can't join the same queue's, or send mail, too.

It's been fun watching you progress. I could play without playing  : )

Well played, sir. I'd say your knowledge of the game and acquisition of funds to this point earns an A+
