I ran into some more possibly interesting info tidbits in my quest to roll up a new newb so I thought I'd share... I'd say these are observations of an Intermediate builder.. due to I didn't have them when I was a newb, and, I still have a lot of questions that I don't know the answers to.

First, Roms are going from my Least favorite choice to my Favorite choice. One reason is that they have Racially Restricted Boffs with a very useful Space Trait.

It also must be a Fed Rom, due to, that way it can fly the most ships in the game - tied with Klingons and the races that can fly Klingon ships. Fed Roms and Klingons can fly all Fed ships PLUS their own Racially Restricted ships..

So, for example, not only can a Fed Rom fly all Warbirds, it can fly all Fed/Starfleet ships, too - whereas a KDF Rom can only fly KDF Warbirds - which is a way smaller selection of ships.

Reman Feds are my second choice due to they offer a useful Space Trait of their own, and, I can also use Rom Boffs... Those Reman Boffs are expensive, and, I'd only want to go Reman if I was going to take advantage of their Space Trait/Boffs which I currently don't. So they are currently my #2 choice.

Human Feds would be tied for #2 due to they have a useful Space Trait and are Starfleet. Being Starfleet gives you fairly active queues that can be nice as a newb, and, as a Fed (can they even be anything else?) I can fly more ships. Humans of course have no special Racial ships - they just get to fly whatever ships their allegiance is with, Fed or KDF - this is assuming you can even join KDF as a Human..

Klingon Feds would be next due to they can not only fly Fed ships.. as with Roms/Remans, they can fly the ships of their race, too. (I am assuming.. I don't know this first-hand. But I do know that Rom/Reman Feds can fly both Rom and Fed ships, so.... it seems like a safe assumption). Klingons don't have anything useful for me in Space as far as Traits, go, though... so... actually.... I might go Alien (from the Klingon character creation screen choices).. just so I can fly Klink ships and Fed ships, plus, I get an extra Personal Space and Ground Trait choice.. Or maybe Gorn.. They have to be good Ground toons.. Plus, they're Gorn!

I'm sticking with Fed due to all my toons can share all Fed rewards. Fed has the most ships and the most shareable ships. We just had that Fed-only shuttle giveaway.. Fed even gets better newb PVEs (Federation Fleet Alert). STO is pretty Fed Focused. KDF is kinda The Red Headed Stepchild. Besides maybe being able to better RP being a Bad Guy.. I dunno what being KDF does for you. You can't even turn in Contraband...!

Now.. having said all that about KDF, I have to say that the toon I play the most of lately, by far, is KDF... Due to my KDF Fleet needs a lot more help with Provisioning the new Colony Fleet Holding than my Fed fleets do. And I like scoring high on Leaderboards  : D

Oh, and, I have to announce that T6.5 ships have (fairly recently..) arrived. The new Miracle Worker ships... Not only do they have an extra console Slot (12), but, for the first time, we see a Universal console slot. They also have 60k (in my shopping window) hps.. As compared to, what? 57k? Tops? from earlier ships? I saw a lot of tanks with ~ 53k. 53k...57...now 60? 10..11..and now 12 consoles?

I mean come on, there are tons of TEN console ships and 10 console/53kish hp tanks still for sale as a T6.. 12 consoles? A Universal console slot? 60k hps? That's a T6.5...

I just happen to be in the market for Tanks, too.

My new Rom Warbird is going to be a Miracle Worker, baby...

Also.. It seems at least slightly useful to pick out your T6 the same time as you're planning your new build to get a better idea of what stats need boosting more than others due to what that ship's particular console layout is. I mean, for example, if you never flew an Escort before you might be shocked to find out the ship you gotta have has 5 Tac consoles but only 2 Eng. It might make a difference in what you choose from the Skill selection screen. Or maybe the T6 has a Console or Starship Trait you want to take advantage of via Skills.. I already know what ship I want to fly with my level 10 toons, so, picking out a T6 and a couple of alternates wasn't too hard. Just a thought, to try and avoid console/trait-shock later on when you 'wished you woulda known sooner'.

Anyway... some additional thoughts from me as an Intermediate Builder, to you. May they be useful and bear fruit. And be mostly accurate! : D

It's not about making an 'optimal' toon and all the 'right' choices.. But, it's always good to know more. I'm currently in crit-monkey tank build mode, and, haven't tried that many ships. Your perspective will vary. Awhile back when I was rolling up a new toon all I wanted was to be blue and have antennae come out of my forehead  : ) That guy is in Lukari set and Iconian set and Fleet MK XIV gear now and I've played him as much as any of the others I got to 60. The above is my latest attempt at some min/max, and, build-regret-control..
Actually that is wrong. A fed rom can only fly some fed ships not all.

I bet they can fly a lot more than KDF Roms can.

I would lose that bet :), outside of my original KDF Orion I haven't touched the Klingon faction :(.

They can't fly any! KDF Roms cannot fly a single Fed ship. Feds get a lil fussy about that...

Fed Roms, on the other hand.. can fly every Fed ship available. Up to my level. A whopping 15ish atm .. hehe.

My info above is likely not 100% accurate on all accounts and I tried to point that out. It was kinda a brain fart (mine smell like butterfly bush flowers, don't panic) after a weekend of trying to wrap my head around a new build after not really making one since being a newb.

MAN I hate making some of the Skill Point decisions.. And you have to make a lot of choices real early on.

It's good for people to at least know that there are issues with Factions and Races, and to know that there are choices with Space Traits based on your Race, and to think about what T6 they want to fly when they're putting together their build. And to know, in my experience, KDF has been less rewarding as far as game rewards go. The game seems a lot more Fed focused, to me.

I'm very happy to announce, by the way, that I've put together not 1, but 2! Eng/Tact/Cruiser (they're both Eng and both have 27 points in Tac Skills) builds that I'm halfway happy with. In the Skill Planner. And put into practice up to level 15ish. I finally figured out where to put 19 points out of 60 selections. Twice. And can now finally level 2 captains into my first Cruiser T6('s).

What must-haves are there in Skill Choices? I dunno if there are any must-haves, but... there Are some can-only-get-them-here's.. 1 would be Long Range Targeting Sensors. Mostly for Sci, there is Drain Infection and Control Amplification. These all grant abilities that you can't get through gear. There are some hard-to-gets, too. Defense is one. Crit chance is another.

I currently feel like the only newb in the world that can fly a Warbird and is flying a Cruiser and lovin' it. What makes it feel even more odd is I'm finally flying Kirk's ship (I always took the Escort or Sci..) and I'm Romulan..

I can still fly all freebie and Z-store Fed ships up to.. T3.

60k hps was impressive on the Miracle Worker ships. Still is, due to I can't find another Fed or Rom ship with >/= 57k hps.

I can find another Klingon ship with > 60k, though... The Klingon Miracle Worker ships have 62k.. All numbers come from my shopping window, of course.

on a personal note....

My 2006, built by me (as ever, since I gave up my Tandy 8088 and then Tandy 386 with SCSI (THE BEAST)) and started building my own 386's on up) PC gave me the BSOD yesterday. The BSOD was named the BSOD due to when you see it... death usually follows. I was lucky and the machine recovered with some superficial teching (I unplugged, blew things out, checked cables, drew a circle around the PC and sacrificed a winter Rodent, clicked my heels 3x and then plugged back in and rebooted) but then this morning I woke up to a frozen PC (this PC has been waking me up on a timer since... 06').

This tells me that unless an actual Can of air (vs. my turbolips) that I normally use but don't have handy, helps, I probably have a component that is on its deathbed. My Super Tech Senses tell me it is likely something on the fairly ancient mainboard and I don't have any components except the monitor that are worth/would survive migrating to a new one.

It's kinda nailbitey around here lately. I haven't gone without a PC since the 80's, Internet since the 90's (there was one Brief, very unpleasant, period, when I first moved to Europe..). I'm currently living in the middle of nowhere and fairly shut this time of year when there's no work or I'm not getting in plenty of miles a week in hilly bike riding for excersize and.. groceries. All foreseeable dollars (we're talking, until late Spring, at least..) I get are already spent on even more necessary necessities.

So, if I go poof, it wasn't You.. it was Me... lol..

I've only been doing Duty Officer/Admiralty missions lately, due to Steven Universe: Save The Light.  Also, my wife and I are moving to a new city next month so things are getting hectic round here.

I did do the new Melting Pot mission with Season 14, but only on one character.  It's rather... uninteresting.  A whole lot of "scan this.  Now scan this.  Now scan this.  Now scan this.  Now scan this.  Now beam down to the planet.  Now scan this.  Now scan this.  Now scan this.  Now scan this" before anything actually happens.

I've moved plenty of times and I think I never enjoyed it once. Moving sucks! Being moved can be good.. but the process is never fun.

I've also had periods where all I had the energy to do in STO was to run Doff/Admiralty.

That other Geordi mish is pretty decent. The newb one that rewards that set including a slow recharge torp, an omni, and a real nice console that has leveled up with me since level.. 10? Even though the set bonuses were very appealing, the other gear in the set wasn't, so, I just got the console, which, is a very nice newb console at the least. Still haven't ran Melting Pot, though. It must not have any rewards I want right now.

I'm kinda back into full tilt STO mode. You know, where you want to play all toons at the same time while rolling up a new one?

Now I just need to get Mr. PC to hold together. Nearly 12 years is a pretty decent run for a homebuilt PC that's gone through 2 moves and plenty of blackouts. Only the (most important part..) video card's been upgraded (but I wouldn't migrate it due to I question if it isn't what is/was having problems). 4 gig of (PC) memory was a lot in 2006 and it still squeaks me by today. Pretty decent run.. I could probably even squeak a few more years out of this thing if it decides to keep working. This, will be my last PC... to have hard drives. The end of an era. Goodbye, to the majority of moving parts and mechanical failures in PC's. (Hello, new problems!) We do still have fans. (And cords...*grumble*)

I didn't have a hard crash yesterday but I did get a couple of DX(9..?) crashes during gameplay. I played a lot, yesterday, too. And did plenty of toon swapping. STO (PC) crashes a lot all by itself without any help... I know it's not just me because it seems like everyone at least mentions this same problem at some point. So, STO crashing doesn't really raise any red flags. It's been crashing on me for at least a good year now. I don't remember getting a DX crash, though.

I get more client crashes, undoubtedly, when I play my Roms.. Even if I just switch back and forth between my Roms and other toons. I can play for hours at a time and won't have a crash for weeks if I just play non-Rom Feds. If I play my Roms or even just swap between them and my non-Rom Feds, I am almost guaranteed to get at least 1 client crash before I log off. Thankfully *knock on plastiform* it never happens during battle..

I picked up some extra work this week but that's just going to pay for the stuff I had no idea how I was going to pay for....lol. Ya gotta laugh. Or cry. Too much crying makes your face ugly. Pro tip  : )

Actually that is wrong. A fed rom can only fly some fed ships not all.

Well that is dumb! The faction thing, in STO..

So, I have a KDF Rom and a Fed Rom with access to T6 ships and below, now.. Here's the deal. My KDF Rom doesn't have access to any Fed ship from the Z-store or the ships you can choose while leveling up. My Fed Rom only has access to Fed ships from the Z-store and from the ship vendor who has the freebie ships that are T4 and below - which is like.... who cares?

So I now have 6 toons and still no Cruiser Pilot!

I did get to finally unwrap the T6 I got from the Summer Event.. I don't know how to classify it except as a tank due to it has no Singularity and it has no Cruiser Abilities but yet it does have a lot of hps, is more Eng focused, and turns slow. I'd been saving it for my Cruiser captain to try out is why I never used it until now. My builds until now have been all escort type warbirds/escorts/sci so they either rely on Exotic damage or Narrow arc weapons. No broadsides battle builds.

Anyway... the cool thing about this ship? Other than it has pretty darn decent hangar pets and a good console, 11 console slots, and good Starship Trait.. It's available at..... *40!* A T6.. If this is true of all Event ships then this is another good reason to get them. Uber twink gear.

I dunno what I'm going to do with T'nee now that I know he can't fly a Cruiser... I'm not real interested in a heavy warbird toon and I already have plenty of escort/fast warbird toons. His build would work for either. I'll probably end up putting him in a heavy warbird... like the Miracle Worker one.. Then again.. I haven't invested in weapons for him yet...

I guess I could use him as another fast warbird toon and give him my other Rom's (z-store) warbird... And finally take my own advice from the beginning and stop rolling damn Roms. And roll a Human (only Fed race with a Space trait) ... Fed (only alignment that can fly Cruisers) ... Cruiser (the thing I wanna try...) captain...

When I first started playing I wished I knew a way to level by just doing Space. The last toon I leveled (to 51) I leveled pretty much all in Space.

All I had to do was craft some purple gear and run PVE's. While I was waiting for PVE's to pop, I'd run random map battles. By the time I could use MK X gear, I hit the Fleet Dilithium mine and got my first piece of Fleet gear. By the time I could use MK XII gear I could kit out the majority of the rest of my ship in Fleet gear..

So, no gear buying.. No gear farming. I just cashed in the Fleet marks that piled up while I leveled and got about as good as gear as you can get before Rep gear becomes available. Gear that will help me to be able to run those Rep gear queues.

All - Space leveling. With a few mishes that have special gear sprinkled in. Mishes that can be dominated in purple Crafted that is Bind to Account for superior Rinsing and Repeating..

25% off everything right now, hmmm..

Well... I've got my eye on a Miracle Worker ship.. thing is, they have so many ways to buy the thing... First of all, all three flavors have enough useful Traits and Consoles to make it worth getting a bundle. Second of all, I rolled up toons that must fly 2 different race specific ships that are shopping for tanks, so, now I'm looking at getting 2 bundles.. Oh wait, for the same price as 2 bundles I can get 3...

So now, I'm thinking to buy 9 ships.... when I really only want 2, and some Traits and Consoles..

Now that is freaking marketing at its FINEST.

The Miracle Worker ships won't go live on console until after the sale ends, so booooo to that.

There aren't any C-Store ships I really want anyway.  Waiting for a T6 Vo'Quv variant that will never arrive. :D

I dunno what I'm gonna do. I might just get the Fed bundle so I can get what I want out of those three ships and then call it a day. I don't have enough Zen for the mega bundle anyway. They make you feel like you're losing out if you have captains from at least 2 of the shipbuilding .... race groups and don't get the mega bundle. I'm glad, besides cool look/RP factor, that Klingons have no real appeal to me yet otherwise I'd really be screwed when it comes to buying ships. It's a pain in the butt enough already with 2 different race restrictions.

That thing with race restriction really helps them sell ships.. or helps us have less useful ships... or both. Is what it feels like, anyway. I mean... I guess you could look at it as more options to have ships that operate differently. More variety. But why couldn't they do that without us having to buy 9 ships to get 1 or 2..

I really only want a single good Cruiser at this point.. not 9 ships.. But I'll eventually want a tanky Warbird (Miracle Worker Warbirds look as good or better as any for this..) and don't want to end up paying double or more in the end, plus, I can use most of the traits and consoles in each bundle - but, will only end up flying ONE ship per bundle of ships.. I won't fly ANY ship from the Klingon bundle in the foreseeable future.

They've really got a handle on marketing. I mean, to take a guy that's really only interested in a single ship and sell him 9, 3 of which he can't even use.. is pretty impressive. They haven't sold them to me yet but I'm a cheap bastard and seriously considered it, so, I know they have to someone else in a similar situation.

On the subject of ships.. there were at least one or two T6's I never saw before in the list when I went shopping last. I dunno where they came from. Must have missed the announcements for them somehow.

Personal note update: I'm gonna risk all and go ahead and be happy about my PC... And praise the power of a well aimed can of AIR..

I normally keep my PC blown out due to I live in an extra dusty place (we get not a drop of rain all summer) and have an old PC but I haven't been able to get any air lately so I've been using my turbolips to blow the thing out and it seemed dust free, enough, to the naked eye. But. When I aimed a shot of compressed air beneath my video card fans yesterday a (thoroughly satisfying) nice thick cloudy grey puff appeared.

Anyway... all seems good again. Nearly 12 years and this PC (knock on plastiform...) is still kickin' booty. As a tech, I didn't run into a whole lot of 12 year old machines and when I did they ran like complete crap, so... I'm gonna go ahead and be proud. This thing plays my games perfectly (my video card is the newest thing in this rig, that helps..) and movies too and I can surf just fine... what else is there in life...?  : )

*pats Old Faithful luvingly*

*Smells Smoke*

O.O

hehe anyway, yippee *hugs PC*

I say this every year.... but, hopefully, finally, NEXT cyber Monday... (covers PC's ears) I do some replacement shopping. it's just time. I have to catch up on what's the latest stuff to build with, too. I'm glad to be able to do that with a working PC and (hopefully! one never knows for certain..) plenty of time..

I know right now SSD drives are in my future. And AMD processor. Nvidia video. And a meaty Megabyte mobo. And a (probably Logitech cordless) keyboard without the letters rubbed off the keys...lol

I've not done a whole lot of 'testing' since yesterday afternoon when I blew this thing out so hopefully I'm not speaking too soon! But everything feels right, again.. so I'm gonna say yay  : )

One thing that had me mixed up on how Faction works, is, when I made my KDF Rom, I had no options for Fed ships. Leveling up, there are no KDF Cruisers or Escorts to chose from. As a Fed Rom, up to like... tier 4?.. there are Cruisers and Escorts to choose from.

Faction still has me screwed up. I just got the Miracle Worker warbird flavored bundle. (yum.) It has 3 consoles in it. In the description it says they can be used in either Miracle Worker Warbirds or Cruisers. Um. How?? How can you claim a Z-store console and not the ship? How can you claim a Warbird Console if you can't fly Warbirds? So, how can the Miracle Worker Consoles be used in either Warbirds or Cruisers?

I just got some Space Starship Traits, too. Fed Only. Hey, I have a Rom who's Fed that these'd be perfect for. Ooops. No. He can't use them. When they said Fed Characters Only - what they meant to say was Fed Default Races Only... These are two different things. My Rom is a 'Federation Character', but, he is not a Fed by default.

Only toons who are Fed by default can use the Traits for sale in the Exchange that say 'For Federation Characters Only'. Only toons who are Feds by default can fly Cruisers or Escorts.....past Tier 4.

What I still don't understand, is, if no toon can fly both Miracle Worker Warbirds and Cruisers, unless there is some Reclaim thing I haven't found yet, I have no idea how Miracle Worker Cruiser Consoles are supposed to work on Miracle Worker Warbirds and vesa virsa.

Faction. It can be annoying. I don't even have any KDF default race toons yet and it's already been annoying. I can see how it adds some variety to the game, so, I'm not entirely against it, I'm just saying it can be annoying. Like today when I found the perfect looking Fed only Trait for my Fed Rom who couldn't use it and for which there is no R.R.W. (?) default race equivalent.

Ended up with 5 new ships, recently. The Miracle Worker Warbird bundle, the Kobali ship from the Phoenix Prize packs, and, a lockbox ship - the Na'kuhl Acheros.

Only have Miracle Worker screenies so far...

Point of possible interest... They moved the STO executable (gameclient.exe) and also made a x64 version..

I had my 15 gig installation of STO go *poof* yesterday after trying to do a re-install to a different drive using existing files. I had to do a regedit to get the installation directory moved to even get the game to install to a different drive. So, either I'm special, or, the 100 googles I read on how easy it is to move your installation directory to a different drive (people are even running off of thumb drives..) are no longer valid. Whenever I moved the install directory and its files, Windows did not change its registry setting for the install directory and therefore continued to try to find/install the game in this directory.. I'm glad they didn't move the exe until this patch due to I already don't like fooling around in the registry. And, now you know how I spotted that they moved the exe - that, and, my Logitech Gaming Software couldn't find the game anymore until I updated it with the new gameclient.exe location.

I've been doing a lot of tune-upping on my macheen, lately, (no hard crashes since .. a week?) and, really, the game looks and plays great. I was rejoicing, yesterday, after a lengthy 'testing session' and then promptly (as I had instantly dreaded when I had invoked .. badness.. by celebrating to soon..) the game crashed. lol..

So, there went all my theories on having a fresh install on a different drive than Windows fixing things.

Having said all that... I've played smooth as silk Wargames 10 player queues with a throttled (due to the 15 gig download..) connection on a 11 year old machine.. which, fairly well impressed me.

Ship Bundles mini-review..

I never could find at least 2 out of 3 ships worth of a bundle to make a bundle attractive, until getting the Miracle Worker bundle. Now I have a first hand opinion on them, and, some surprises.

Some things I've enjoyed with having the entire bundle of a .. bundle of ships, so far, are...:

All 'costume pieces' are free/included. When you go to modify how your ship looks there are no pay options.

The obvious - there's 3 Starship Mastery Traits, and 3 Consoles. In the case of the Miracle Worker Bundle, if you use all 3 consoles the recharge time on the powers from all 3 consoles are reduced to 1 minute from 2.. which, I'm glad I got to try.

The different Boff layouts are the real game changers so far with my first bundle. There's always an Engineer Commander (the highest rank), but, everything else is shuffled depending on which ship in the bundle I'm flying. It makes for some real interesting combo changes.. that work with my theme and without having to change any gear.

On paper, I assumed the Tactical MW Warbird would be the best fit for me but now that I've actually floated this tub around... I dunno... I might just fly all 3. I've got fairly distinctive builds for each with the only real constant being.. Fire at Will .. and other agro grabbing AoE. The overall theme, so far, being, try to stay alive while aiming Boff cones and broadsides Beams at everything on the map, while, also trying to pump up enough energy to power 7 Beam Arrays to a respectable level so that stuff goes down in a respectable amount of time.

The only thing I'm sold on that comes with a single ship in this bundle, so far, is.. the look of the Sci Warbird. No matter which ship in the bundle I fly, they all look like a barely altered version of the Sci ship.

I haven't seen an entire bundle that I like enough of until now, to get. I hope I find more. Even if I only end up flying one ship out of the bundle it's been well worth getting all three ships that are in this first bundle I've gotten, and, even if I only end up flying one ship out of the bundle.. it's going to have parts from the other ships cherry picked out (I'll get the exact console layout and look I want) so that I get the best fit for me - which, so far, is different than what I thought it would be when looking at things on paper. So far, it's looking like I'll probably end up flying all three! Which, I totally didn't expect to happen.

Being able to slide around between three builds without having to change gear or anything (just swap some Boff abilities around and redo a few hotkeys or use loadouts..) is a pretty good ability. None of my other toons have it.

So, yeah. Thumbs Up on my first bundle experience.

I'd been wanting to try the new Na'Kuhl Acheros Battlecruiser (lockbox t6) I got awhile back. The price was right and I wanted its Trait were about the only reasons I got it. Finally took it out for a spin today, just to level up the ship some... and... I really, really, really like this ship! The modeling seems...older.. but otherwise it's a fairly cool looking ship and it has some key features that make it a surprise find. Things like 5 weapons up front (and 3 in back), which the toon that got the ship is already geared for (except that I gained a rear weapons slot!), and, it has a very nice turn rate for a Cruiser. It has 3 good Cruiser abilities - I would like to have had the 4th.. (taunt/dmg resist) but oh well..., I'll take the Battle Cloak on this Fed ship as a consolation prize.. The Boff layout is fairly ... robust, too.

It's been a very fun ship to pilot. More like a beefy Escort than a boat-like Cruiser.  The only reason I'm even taking the time out right now to gush about it, is.. I got a 2 hour AFK penalty for trying to run the Winter Event with a throttled connection. I'm lucky I haven't had more - my STO install is fresh, too, soooo, I have to download stuff every time I do something for the first time. Otherwise, for a really crappy 100kps+ connection that I now enjoy,  the game runs surprisingly well.

This ship might actually replace my first T6 that my first toon/main's been flying - the Tactical (?) Pilot Escort. I still need to see how it parses.. I'm getting agro and not even using all my abilities due to slight newhotkeylayoutconfusion. I have 5 trays with no empty slots (maybe 1?) that are filled with things I want hotkeys for. 5 trays..lol.

Anyway.. Screenie:

: )

Haven't been playing as much lately, and probably won't for another couple of weeks, due to moving to another city, and all the hectic scrambling my wife and I have been doing to get everything (including three cats) from here to there, hopefully without anything getting lost or exploding along the way.

So I'm probably going to miss getting the Winter Event ship by thatmuch.  I'll count the remaining days once my living situation is stable again.  (It's nice that you only have to get it on one character, though)
