Haven't tried to run the Winter event since I got the 2 hour AFK penalty for trying. I never end up getting the Event ships, either, for one reason or another. I'm really glad I got the Summer ship. It has a better looking Trait than the one on this Winter ship. Having an account-wide usable at level 40 T6 is a pretty nice thing about Event ships.

I moved from coast to coast with 2 cats and a wife so I can relate with that kind of situation at least a little bit. The cats did pretty well except for the massive panic attack they had at the Hoover Dam. Why? I dunno. Heat maybe.. They were wide-eyed, panting, like they saw their worst lil nightmares. For like an hour.. It was kinda tense/intense but they eventually snapped out of it and fully recovered and in the end they got to walk on two coasts on a whole different continent from where they started.

If you miss this Event ship, there'll be more... I might end up missing out on it too. A Raider *does* sound interesting, though.. Don't have one of those. 25% bonus damage to rear attacks or something like this. And they lose a weapons slot. But it has 5 weapon slots up front, I think. Which is nice for a ship that's dogging rear shields.

GL with the move! Hope all goes as fast and smooth as possible.

So I'm probably going to miss getting the Winter Event ship by thatmuch.

So far, I'm thinking... no big loss. It's not one of the more impressive Event ships, for one thing. Another, is, after running that race last night for tokens... 5 times.. and losing each time to a spider, or wolf, or whatever else.. I'm not very motivated to run it again for tokens. So I probably won't get this ship either.

Event ships Are good things to have. They're (my 1 Event ship is, anyway) usable at lvl 40 and account bound like you said. Great ships for getting from 40 to 50 properly twinked.

I still want that Dorito (sci) Ship! Someone told me I might still be able to get it due to I have the project slotted still. (Hope it wasn't a Winter ship! I have to look, now..) The Trait on the Summer ship I have from last summer is pretty good. That's another thing T6's can be useful for and their Admiralty versions are usually pretty decent.

Hey, I heard someone in Zone ask if they could fly FED ships with their Rom if they picked Fed faction. A couple of people told them Yes, no one disputed it.. So, I feel better that I'm not the only one that had to level a Rom to 60 to find out that's not true.... past Tier 4. I wouldn't have even rolled that guy had I known this little tidbit of info .. due to I have to buy double the amount of ships, now! .. for everyone to be (mostly) equal with Admiralty and access to what ships there are to fly (and Traits..). Yes, I did pass that info on to Zone. And, I like playing my Rom, so, I guess I'm not sorry I leveled him and gave him a bundle of T6's.. But really, I wouldn't have done it if not for SRO (with Infiltrator as a decent bonus..). Warbirds don't really excite me over Cruisers enough for the sacrifice. I don't like this thing with Faction and having to buy 2 of everything. I leveled and play this guy for 1 reason: SRO.

Happy Moving TG! again.. btw..  : ) Gawd I really don't like moving. Some days there's nothing I'd like to do more. I kinda have nowhere to go, though. I'm where I always wanted to be.

There's a trick to running the Fastest Game On Ice race for the ship tokens. When you come up to a curve, either double-tap roll or jump up in the air and take your fingers off the movement keys. When you alight, you'll brake to a stop and have traction back temporary. Turn and start running again. Repeat on the next curve etc.

(Doesn't make much sense, but it's the way their slippery ice physics engine works.)

I use the 'bunny hop' method myself and won last year's ship with no problem. Before that I couldn't win a single race.

As far as I can tell, this works in Neverwinter, too.

This works. I still barely won (lol..) but I did, first time  : ) Thanks!

The summer event was way easier. Just fly around a track within like.. 15 minutes. I nearly goofed that one, too, though. I was running the ... wrong race. I said something in Fleet about 'I'll never win this damn thing' and luckily someone pointed out my error..

Glad I could help. :) You'll get better with practice. By the end of the event you should be able to run it without too much problem.

Run as much in a straight line as you can, clipping the edge of small turns (while staying in the track) where possible. The fewer times you need to bunny hop, the faster your race time will be.

Another thing that helps is getting the ice boots from the Winter Event vendor and practicing throughout the rest of the year sprinting around ground missions with ice turned on.

So my wife and I are in our new temporary apartment, and... the TV here is from 2006.  There's no way to hook my PS4 up to it, and so no way to play STO until we find and move into a new apartment of our own sometime in the next month (so we get our own TV out of storage).

Gah.  I was really looking forward to a relaxing day of STO-ing after all the hassle of getting here.  instead, I'm going to miss the entire Winter Event.

Grats! Well, you're there at least.. My wife and I lived with my favorite uncle about 200' from where I am now, for awhile. Here's where we moved west, to. 2 cats and 2 people in an average sized bedroom. I of course immediately set up my PC and got us on EQ. Priorities, ya know. Then we moved to the Midwest and got a small place and I then of course immediately set up what was now our 2 PC's and got us on EQ. Priorities, ya know. Then we moved to her country where I promptly learned how to build a PC using parts from entirely new distributers who used an entirely new (to me..) language and got us on EQ. Ya know.. ya gotta have priorities..  : ) Lucky me I had a wife as addicted as I was to gaming. Am? This helped a lot. With prioritizing..   hehe

May your new connection to the cyberworld arrive asap..

Glad I could help. :)

Much thanks, I'll probably get to try a Raider, now  : ) Of the ships I have now I think would rate the Summer Event ship in the top.... 2? 3, if you say that the Pilot Warbird and Pilot Escort are different ships. These Pilot ships were my first and still my favorite. They just have it all.. well.... 'all' enough  : ) That Vorgon (Summer Event) ship is sweet, too. I can fly it with as much AoE as I want and rarely explode. When they 'level up', the hangar pets (hangar pets?? yes, the hangar pets are actually noteworthy) can be pretty tough. They can even steal team agro.. which can be handy for some of those 'click the glowie' situations. The Starship Trait on it is good. The deeps is respectable, but, as with every ship I fly that isn't a Pilot escort or warbird or Temporal Sci ship (this is a good ship..), my deeps suffers.

I can't figure out why my deeps is so low (16kish) in a Na'kuhl Acheros Battlecruiser (name memorized from Auction searches..).. This ship should be right up my alley. I never explode in it, it has all the right stats and Boff slots and the console layout is fine. I can even use all the same gear I use in my deepsiest Pilot escort and use Battle Cloak as a Fed.. But I never break like 16k in it..

Anyway, yeah, cool  : )  I have a toon that seems to gravitate towards rear shields, so, maybe he'll be good in that thing. Now I have a lot better chance of finding out.

You'll get better with practice. By the end of the event you should be able to run it without too much problem.

It was already easier this morning. I smoked whatever it was I was up against. And then went about my morning. Ty...

There are sections  where you can run over small hills on the sharp U  turns. The final turn with the big hill can be run over the top just try to be closer to the right side than up the middle. I don't  use the ice boots and on several occasions  passed the toon that started  just before  me.

It's definitely good to find something that works. After the first round of fails I was perfectly fine with not ever running that race again. Thing is, next year they'll probly do the same thing. Now I don't have to sweat it.

The Summer event was super simple. Just buy or rent a floater and take your time getting to the finish. I'm glad I have a trick for the Winter one, now. The more ships the merrier. I sure like the Summer ship.

Well, the apartment complex sent a new TV, so the PS4 is all hooked up and I can play!

.... and I don't understand how to win the race.  I tried it twice, and the first time I apparently slipped a quarter-inch over the line, so I was instantly disqualified, while the second time I was able to keep control of my character fairly well, but my opponents just blew past me at twice my running speed (and unlike me, they had perfect traction, so they didn't have to stop at every corner in order to not slide off the track).

Life is good!

.... and I don't understand how to win the race.

Bunny Hop ftw! There's more than one way to win but so far bunny hopping seems to be the most foolproof for me.

Maybe it works different on Console.. On PC, just like it says above, when you hit a tight corner that you don't want to chance, jump and then stop running for a second and you'll come to a dead halt. Take off again as fast as you can and when you think you're going to lose control and run off the track... bunny hop and come to a complete stop.

I've had (1) fail since learning this method due to I was just being a spaz. It seems to pay to try to not overthink it. Just go full out and do a full stop at any point you feel you might lose control and then go full out again and keep doing that until the Finish. That's what I try to do anyway and I totally sucked at this thing before to the point I wasn't going to run it anymore. Thanks again, Doc Hornet.

GL, TG! Run..jump/stop...run.. try to only whip out a bunny hop when you need it.

The problem is not losing control, the problem is that the other racers are zooming around the track at twice my speed, easily blowing past me.  I didn't lose control once during my second attempt, but I still lost the race long before I got to the end.

The only other thing I could think of is that it's not unusual to get passed before the end of the race. I usually seem to get passed at least once but I always end up passing them back at the end. They seem to (be programmed to let you win if you get that far) go slower at the end than they do at the beginning of the race. I.E. don't even pay attention to getting passed unless it's at the very end.

Maybe it's a Console thing you're experiencing. Sucks to keep losing that race, I know that!

Only other other thing I can think of, is.. I think bunny hopping mayyy even be faster than full out running and sliding around the corners. I've tried both ways and it seeeems to be faster to come to a dead stop and start again than it is to sliiiiiiiiide your way slowly around the toughest corners. I think I never won without bunny hopping.

You know what a great tip, might be...? Especially since I dunno if anyone else here plays on console and things might have changed on console. Ask ZONE! When I first ran the race all kinds of tips were scrolling up my chat box but I ignored them in my frustration to win this silly race (that I have called names that cannot be repeated, here..  hehe).

Decided to just use the combination of the Phoenix event (and the resulatant Dil-to-Zen rate) and the 20% off ship sale to buy the three-pack of KDF Command Battlecruisers.  So now I have three new ships to play with (on two different characters, one of whom didn't have a T6 yet).

So I'm not really worried about the event T6 anymore.

lol..

If you scroll up a few replies, I had pretty much the same exact attitude. I mean, you have to run that race like a hundred times.. or 25ish. and when you're losing...every...single...race.. Yeah. I had the same attitude..lol.

The most exciting looking thing about this Raider, to me, is that it is a Raider. Haven't tried one yet. And, it can be a cross-faction Admiralty ship..

I didn't really care when I wasn't going to get the ship but now that it looks like I probably will I'm glad I was given a tip to that works for me. Thanks again for that. Sorry it didn't work for you, TG! I never get those things either, ya know.. 1 so far. 1. Looks like maybe 2, soonish.

Next new ship..

This would be the Winter freebie ship. The toon that earned it just happens to be decked out with polaron weapons and consoles and this ship (I was oblivious/dumb luck) just happens to have a +polaron damage console. He's also decked out in full Iconian gear as you can kinda see, above. Not expecting to use this ship longer than to try it and snag the Trait, but, am looking forward to trying it out after a little more tweaking of hotkeys and gear placement. The starship Trait seems more worthy than I remember it being when the specs came out. Among other things it applies a stacking damage resistance debuff when firing energy weapons - which, is exactly when I normally want such a thing  : )

Bunny hopping ftw. I'm really glad DocHornet piped in with that tip on how to run the ice race not only due to I got a new Admiralty ship for my Roms... and I can try out a Raider.. but, next year.... when this event comes up, I will be pr0h. With enough practice, that tip really paid off. Also heard of/saw people using a forward roll technique and I'm sure there's got to be others. I found mine! It sounds a lil silly, looks a lil silly, feels a lil silly, but, it worked. I pretty much despised and was going to skip that race before I found a way to run it that worked for me, so, thanks for the tip.

I dumped my Miracle Worker warbird already btw.. It's a nice ship, no real complaints. I mean.. with 11 consoles and one of them being a Universal console, and, the ship having a ton of HPs.. It's kinda hard to go wrong.

I think I'm more of a cannon/escort (type) ship guy, though. That's what I started with and what I seem to always go back to. So I hopped out of that big tub filled with beams I was floating... and into a Pilot Warbird, with a Wargames Engine for speed and the + crit chance Deflector (which I found out is actually a pretty small '+'...) and I'm in the process of hybriding that with Iconian for some tankiness and a nicer paintjob  : ).  It's been fun. My main concern is that I'm becoming addicted to Wargames engines. Once I tried them it's kinda hard to go back.

Well, today started Move Part 2 (last month was moving into a temporary apartment, today was moving most of our stuff into our permanent apartment, but some of our stuff into a second temporary apartment).... the upshot of which is that the PS4 is packed away and I can't play for a couple of days.  I'm not even sure when we'll have Internet again at the new place.  (I have my laptop and the internet at Temporary Place 2).

I'M JONSING FOR SOME TREK, MAN.  (And also for Killing Floor 2, which I've started playing again the past week or two)

... also, I just heard a weird moan.  I think this place might be haunted. YAY.

... also, I just heard a weird moan.  I think this place might be haunted. YAY.

lol.. Hurry back online!

Soooo I tried out the Raider with the above gear, which, seemed pretty good for this ship... and I never exploded so much since I was flying T5's as a semi-newb in Advanced queues. At first it was .... scoffable, and then it was .... head shakable... and then it was just downright embarrassing as I kept exploding in the Borg Disconnected (Advanced ofc..) I was in. Still, the ship seemed worthy enough for a second try so I shipped it over to one of my Roms who's using plasma energy weapons and torps, and, Wargames gear. I cheaped out and got a Fleet Warp Core due to I couldn't use my Iconian Singularity from the Pilot Warbird I was previously flying.

The console in this ship is OK (1 minute recharge on an aoe Placate & +Polaron dmg) but it is very losable. I traded it for a Fleet vulnerability locator Tac console for more crit chance and to replace the torp damage I lost from the Pilot Warbird console I was previously using.

So far.... I have to say the results are Very pleasing.. No explosions yet and when I find the sweet spot, enemy ships seemed to melt nicely.

Anyways, here she be in 3/4 Wargames gear and I used the second template available for this ship, this time. I'll probably plunk an Iconian Warp core in it at some point if I decide to keep flying it.

-------

Update: Still no explosions *knock on plastiform* and I just got done tanking a morning wake-up tzenkethi red alert.. The deliciously melting dps and lack of exploding has led me to keep this ship in service..
