how do I modify the graphics settings for an old (ish) computer to make it playable?

I built this thing in...2006? or was it 2005.. I updated the bios at least once after building it otherwise I could just go by that date. Since then I did get a new video card ~ 6? years ago.

Anyway, I run everything on Max. Sometimes I'll turn the effects down if I don't wanna be blinded (you know how it is - Max effects are best when you don't have tons of max effects powers going on around you - whereas max effects with minimum flashiness newb powers is where you want to be). OK maybe that's just me.

That's meant to be encouragement. I mean, it seems like you should be able to at least run the game on lower settings, unless...., the laptop video card is just that...ungamey. Can be you have a 2d focused/business/surfing oriented video card in that laptop - if that's the case it's going to really slow things down. You have to have X gigs of memory, too. I dunno what X is. I only have 4 (that was good for 2005/6!).

I dunno why I made you read all that when all I should really say, is, try this: Drop your graphics setting slider in-game all the way down. If that doesn't work then most likely you won't be able to play.

Something else you can try is to go into Advanced settings and see what looks worthwhile to set down/change, there. Keep your main graphics quality slider all the way down and try things in the Advanced settings. I can't remember the exact options available but there is at least one or two options to let the GPU or CPU do most of the work - try those. You can set your framerate down, there, too - I don't think it will help in your particular situation, but, it wouldn't hurt to set it as low as possible (30fps should be playable), and, you can always bump it back up later.

Simply dumping the slider all the way to Low should do the trick, but, maybe the GPU/CPU swapping option(s) and whatever else looking interesting in the Advanced Settings help, too.

If you can play the game after dumping the slider all the way to low (and maybe tweaking an advanced setting or two) - turn one thing back up/on at a time - check out how the game plays - turn up/on another video option - and keep on doing that until you hit the option that makes your system gag.

Unless you have a low amount of system memory (under 4 gig) or a primarily 2d focused video card with little video memory and/or 3d capability - things which arrrrre *not* rare in laptops - then you should be able to run this game I'd think. Hope so! There's sure plenty to do, lately..

This anniversary is going to be hard to beat.. 4 new T6's, all of which I am glad I have, and at least (I've not given ship 4 a workout, yet..) 1 new Main ship after having a Pilot Escort as my main ship, since.... my first T6.

I might actually remember this anniversary! : )

Well hummm.. My first T6 was a Pilot Escort.. I got the Andorian Pilot Escort bundle when it came out.. And then I found Destroyers/Warships and thought my Pilot Escort days might finally be coming to a close... and then the Magee comes out. I haven't been paying much attention to what the new ships are and stumbled across it in the Fleet T6 selection.. It's like everything I wanted in a Pilot Escort......except maybe 1.4 shield and hull.. which would never happen.

About everything else *did* happen with the new Magee Pilot Escort/Raider.. Its got a 21 turn rate, Pilot Maneuvers, and Raider Bonuses/Raider Universal seats.. It's not any more papery than any other Pilot Escort - if anything, it's beefier. We're talking Escorts so the Beef is lean but it wasn't so lean that I couldn't tank a Dranuur Gauntlet Advanced on my first flight out and I did at least as well as I ever do in a Procyon V when things aren't so pretty on the next flight out (how's that for luck on my first 2 Randoms..).

So anyway.. Pilot Escort was my first T6... it's still top in my roster due to this surprise find at the Fleet Starbase. It's scalable, too! Which.. could be cool for my next newb..

I haven't been as happy with a ship since my first T6 as I have been with my last 2, by far! It's just a great feeling  : D The last 3 out of 4 ships I've tried, I reaaaally liked, as far as that goes. The newest Sci Event ship was ok to try but I wasn't too in to it. The Trait it has looks (haven't tried it out yet) very good though and I've already got it slotted on my second main to try out.

My second main ship, which I can't believe I put it in the garage already to try out the Magee who now does not want to be garaged, is, the Recon Destroyer. If you liked the S'torr Event ship... Check this one out. 1.) You won't look like you're flying an Event ship. 2.) it's very, very, similar but has a lot nicer shield bonus and a lil less power to weapons and a tad less maneuverability but is still plenty maneuverable to me (14 vs. 16 I think). Very comparable in seating and consoles, too.

<3 my new ships! Had to share the joy  : ) Still have 1 left I haven't even tried. The Fleet Battlecruiser for my second main/torps/sci guy. Yes, I have a lot of free Fleet Modules from Tier 6 Rep... I never really looked at fleet ships before, I'm glad they did that (gave fleet modules away for reaching rep tier vi).

They seem to have someone new doing art in the game, too. *shrug* it looks from better - way better recently in places, to me. Captain Tilly was a big improvement I thought, for example.

SOoooo in the ship buying and trying frenzy my Sci guy has ended up in.... an Eng oriented Battlecruiser? And my Tac guy ended up in (everything hehe) a Sci Scout Ship...? Wellll not Ended.. My Tac guy flies different ships depending on whim more than the Sci. But that's where they're at atm.

Kind weird. The biggest surprise was the T'pau Event ship being so good with my Tac build. 3 crummy weapons up front, 6 total? And a Green storebought secondary deflector? That little thing shreds! It's tough, too.. At first I just flew it for the Trait, and, wasn't impressed with it at all with my Sci guy, oddly enough. It's going to stay in my Tac guy's roster and I'm even gonna shop the other ones that are out.

So far I'm flying .. 4 new ships as mains. Pilot Escort-Raider, Destroyer, Battlecruiser, Sci-Scout. Used to fly a Pilot Escort ~ 99.5% of the time until now. Finally, finally. Some new ships. Finally some Broadsides! Finally some Rock Soup (Grav Well) that doesn't get me exploded on every run and has max torps up front..

It really pays to try different ships. Sometimes I just stumble into good ones (good one = good fit for me) when I'm not even looking. The S'torr and T'pau Event ships kicked things off on this ship trying spree.

~~

Oh yeah, and.. Torps in the Battlecruiser, Beam Arrays in the Destroyer, either DHCannons or DBeamBs in the Magee (Pilot Escort-Raider), and, DHCs or DBBs in the T'pau/any future sci-scout ship. All Gold. Everything's gold except 1 Warp core and a few consoles.

Different ship types, weapon types, toon types. Both toons are my highest parsers. Tac/Destroyer is currently in the lead during this ship shopping & swapping. Sci had the lead ever since Andorian Pilot ships came out. It was Tac, again, before that, and I think Sci had the crown at least one other time, way back. I had a real long exclusively Eng period where Eng must have been in the lead but I haven't been Eng'ing lately. I'm not very far from getting into dps 75k (channel).

TG... they are trying to Pull You Back In... Just when you think you can get away.. they say, hello to my 2 FREE l33t little friends..

https://www.arcgames.com/en/games/star-trek-online/news/detail/11098843

I have no idea how you log in on console. I've not had a console.. since...lol.. Nintendo 64! At the time it was so uber you couldn't pass it up. 64 bits! Back in... like... 2000 BC. The Japanese (Americas only true rivals) were showing us their best tech (and at a reported Loss!). Back when Amiga was great and 386s roamed teh earth. I used to play console games back when you could only get them in the arcade, and, when they were an upgrade to Pinball. My Pong game was deluxe, too - real wood and brushed aluminum. Good Times.

No idea how things work on console now. I moved to PCs ~ 1985.

It just associates itself with your existing PSN account, I think..... also, oooh, Nandi Warship.

I haven't really been ship-hunting since I got my trio of Iconian ships, but a free ship is always welcome.

We got a (F something) S'torr Warship on PC. It is a really, really good ship in the right hands. So is the T'pau we just got. I'd never tried a ship like either of these. They set me off on a spree of ship trying.

What was the first question we all had when we first started playing..? How to get a T6.. Now, the answer is simple. Grab any Event ships that roll around (even if you don't like it today.. you may, tomorrow - or its Trait or Console) is the old answer and now to add on to that we can say: Get your Rep to Tier 6. Every toon that we level to t6 rep, now, gives out enough Fleet Modules for 2+ Free and very sturdy ships. I've tried 3 so far and they have all been very good ships.

See, next time you see me saying nothing but good stuff about STO, which I normally do, then you'll know I mean it - due to.. I've got nothing but complaints lately.

Introducing, the newest, lagiest, part of STO:
https://www.arcgames.com/en/games/star-trek-online/news/detail/11104033

Not only did they introduce me to a significant amount of video lag, they removed all the pertinent info available when making a toon. They don't show you *any* of the Captains powers anymore - they just give you a generic description, a bunch of words strung together, that doesn't mean much of anything at all.

Does it look nice? Yeah, sure, but, umm, who cares. The character creator went from being informative, and, with the same system requirements as the majority of the game to being a fluffy lagfest.

But they have no time for the Foundry! Which I am not holding a torch for, right now... just saying.. Two strikes in a row.

I really, really, do think that removing *all* of the pertinent information available for making as informed choice as possible at the character creation screen is a bad idea. As a newb, you aren't going to fully understand what all that stuff means, but, you will have a much better idea of what your toon can do and can't do.

One reason I have so many toons is that I got them to a point and realized something about them didn't match what I was trying to do..

So, I am saying, they took the exact *opposite* approach as I would have. As far as I'm concerned they need *more* pertinent info at Character Creation. Definitely not less. They need to show Captains powers. Career Specific Traits. Racial Advantages.. And they need to show them in as easy to understand and as useful way as possible.

STO already has a large learning curve. Learning to re-roll your character was one of my first things I had to learn. It took me like.. 2 years until now to get a grasp on who can do what. (I'll admit it.. I guess I'm just that slow.) I would always find some little thing about a Race or Career and out came the dice for a re-roll...

I mean, timesinking is fine, but, re-rolling your toons because you found something out about them wayyyy down the road is just no fun.

Matter of fact I would love it if they took the exact *opposite* approach. Give me every little detail you can think of about my newb-endgame abilities based on the choices I make....at the Character Creation screen.

Too much clutter? Isn't that the reason we got for the new Character Creator design? Well... gee.. how many solutions would you like to that.

Solution 1 - make the info expandable. If people want to click on the expanded info and see what it says before making their choice, yay, if not - then the New & Improved screens pretty much look exactly like they do now except with lil circles or boxes to click on for details..

Tell people that the details are only provided for the gearheads (it's effing STO... there's plenty..) - otherwise, they can read the fluff, dress their dolly, and go right in.

To put it simply, I think the new character creator is visually nice (the old one was, too..), but, is a totally unnecessary step backwards for the game.

~~~
I probably wouldn't be nearly as critical if they wouldn't have found time, for this, at the exact same time they say they have no time, for, the Foundry.
I think I could have summed things up better to say: STO is very easy to play but it is not a simple game. I don't see the need to make things simple when it comes to creating a character. STO is not a simple game. From it, we require, Information... to make... Informed decisions.
If you just wanna play STO for the ... Space Barbie (as per the link)... well, Barbie Out at the Creation Screen and just pick what colors look pretty to you. Tac is red... Eng is yellow... Sci is blue.. The races look like....well.. check the pictures. Simple.
I don't think we need to make things easier for the people wanting no info.
Pertinent Character Creation Info.. is good. Organize it better if you don't like the way it's presented but don't remove it.. The game has not gotten any Simpler since the first Character Creator - if anything, we could use *more* info.
It kinda almost seems like an insult, even, to the people that put a lot of time into the Foundry, to tell them you have no time for them, but, hey, look, you made the character creator into something that You think is prettier..
Just bad timing I guess.
Just want to leave off on a less pointy point. It's a great game, they make bold decisions, lots of them are good. The game is never stagnant to me. My playtime now is as good or better than it's ever been - and it for sure is better than when I started, due in no small part, to those bold decisions.
STO is a game that is always getting...bigger. These last two decisions from them have made it feel smaller. Simpler, and smaller. Which ya just don't want to see if... you're me, I guess  : )
Anyway. I don't wanna be the Get Off My Lawn guy  : ) I'm gonna go pew-pew!~
So.. hey. If anyone happens to stop by before the next Upgrade Weekend (whenever that is), when, I hope to gold out some new stuff...
Any suggestions for a Photon torpedo build?
I'm already going to pick up the Rep torps and the Terran console..
Vulnerability locators...
I've already got 3 Projectile Specialist Doffs - 1x Crit severity chance (I got one 'cheap'..), and, 2x Recharge bonus chance (20% chance for 4 sec cooldown redux). and... 2 other Doffs that I can't recall atm.. I just converted him to almost all torps and got rid of his GravWell due to exploding too much and can't remember what I swapped the other 2 Doffs out for atm.
It's for a Sci Captain..
On the subject of Sci Captains - if you do Ground.. wow, how nice is Medical Vanguard as a Ground Trait? I just start using it, and, yum. It's for Sci Captains Only. https://sto.gamepedia.com/Trait:_Medical_Vanguard
I had all these HP heals but not much Shield healing.. So, yeah, this was a pretty great find  : D
Any torp ideas?
In addition, we'll be rolling out some changes to enemy difficulty with this new update. We've heard your feedback on high level battles, and after a lot of internal testing, we're going to be making our first changes to that difficulty to hopefully make those big fights a little more tenable. You'll notice enemies at levels 55 and above will be hitting a little less hard - not so much less to make it easy, though. You'll still need all of your tactics to make it through those big fights.
We also hope you noticed and like that we took all the big words out of the Character Creator
I'll leave it to you to figure out which quote was me just being silly.
I've been destroying tweaking my torp build again and ran across... Photonic Officer. With it, I can potentially replace the Reciprocity trait I've been using, and, have a2b like performance, without, the sacrifice of .. A .. which I often make use of in that build.
I picked up 2 of the purple Doffs to increase PO recharge (I could go 3 but don't want to due to I really like my 3 others..) and am using Photonic Officer II, currently. The results are not so bad.
How do you use Photonic Officer? Just checking for tips from anyone that's used it since they redid it fairly recently. It seemed reeeeally... situational, before - but it seems a lot friendlier, now. Almost like a decent Sci/Aux alternative to a2b.
Photonic Officer has turned out to be pretty decent in its current incarnation. I'd highly recommend checking it out if you run with high Aux and want more recharge. Photonic Officer III with 2 purple recharge redux doffs is giving me ~ max recharge. Photonic II was giving me ~ max recharge on 45 second and longer doff powers which is nice if you don't have a slot for PO III but want more recharge. I didn't try 3 doffs due to having no space but 2 doffs was a significant difference from 0.
In the process of trying out new stuff I actually dumped 2 back weapons and replaced them with .... Rep Mines, of all things. Just for fun... And it has been! Mine dispersal III and the rep console with recharge redux help. I didn't lose much deeps, somehow.. 20% maybe. The new stuff is only VR and the old stuff is Gold, too.
I lead up to something, here, awhile back, and then stuff happened, and I never gave the punchline.
Anyway... what has to be the funniest thing in STO is coming again, soon.. The first time I experienced it I totally thought I'd been hacked. My PC was already doing weird things at the time and then I logged in, and...
Well, better get to the punchline.. It's nearly April 1st..
After finally figuring out I wasn't being punk'd in a bad way... I was kinda annoyed.. Then I couldn't believe I couldn't turn it off... Then I figured out how to turn it off and by then was already hooked and laughing.. so.. it's now ever-perma on.
What?
With the Foundry going down, still, soon, last I knew..
If you're interested in Foundry mishes at all then become a Reviewer. I was just reminded that you can do a better mish search as a Reviewer. Reviewers get some kinda accolade for being reviewers due to the Foundry poofing soon, too.. I think.
The Foundry..
Whenever the topic of the Foundry comes up eventually someone states: "It simply boils down to whoever knew how it runs is gone."
So what?
What happens when the Spaceship person is gone? The Ray Guns person? The Exchange person?
"Well, we can no longer have Spaceships, Ray Guns, or an Exchange, due to the person who knew how they run is gone"
That's WEAK!
They don't have to go over to World of Warcraft or Marvel Heroes or any other game and learn how it works - they have to learn how their own game operates.
If learning how the game they have, today, operates, is too much for them... well, learn!
The person who created the Foundry *could* have been an alien super genius with knowledge and ability far beyond that of mere humans.. but I'm thinking not.
It's lame that they won't support the Foundry. Their excuse to not support it is also lame. Someone(s) put a lot of effort into giving us the ability to make and play our own mishes and that ability has been in the game for ...more than a few years.. now.
A mish maker is not an insignificant offering. It's a very grand offering. It hasn't been a particularly popular part of the game but that's not due to its ability - it's due to its... advertising. For the average player STO gives no compelling reasons to use the Foundry. There are so many buttons to push for Farming, who has time to use the Foundry.. People are and have been using it since years, though. People wanting to complete accolades that are 'nearly impossible otherwise' (loose Zone Quote). People who are inspired to make their own mishes. People who want to play those mishes. "Whole Fleets revolve around the Foundry" (Zone Quote).
The excuse they give to not support the Foundry is WEAK. Removing the Foundry is WEAK.
Removing a powerful part of your own game just due to you can't figure out how it works is.... WEAK!
That is my response to this Ultimate Answer: "We don't know how it works anymore".
It's Weak.. weak... weak...
How in the world could they not document how their own software runs.. And once they found out they were screwed, how in the world could they not ... unscrew themselves? Was the person who programmed the Foundry that much more capable than anyone currently on the staff..? Can they not read their own code? Can they not learn how to read their own code?
There, I feel better  : )
And yes, I love the game and am having fun but this is a fairly significant bad move. Due to the Foundry is a fairly significant resource and they are just throwing it away with the only excuse "because we can't figure out how it runs".
Today would be in at least the top 5 (1?) days of the year to log in  : ) Don't forget to turn your sound on!
~~~

I'm going to start getting an Endeavor Helper going.. They're going to be around for awhile, so, may as well make them as quick and painless as possible. It would be nice if they were even.. *gasp* fun.

Anyway, I'm gonna share, here. If anyone else..... happens to have any useful Endeavor Tips (that don't involve ... The Foundry..) I'll gladly take them.

I'd take a decent link, too. I've not seen any. Nothing special anyway.
