If you never wanted to play a Romulan, but, you wanted to experience the not-so-impressiveness that is Warbirds - your chance is coming.

https://www.arcgames.com/en/games/star-trek-online/news/detail/11206743

I went from thinking that Warbirds were OP, to, never wanting to fly them again. *shrug* Can be, I just don't pilot them properly. It was a great newb ship though when I was a newb-newb and the game was all new.

A fairly interesting update..

https://www.arcgames.com/en/games/star-trek-online/news/detail/11228103-pc-and-console-patch-notes-for-8%2F8%2F19

Now that I've finally ditched my beams for cannons....again.....they've majorly upgraded Beam Overload.. Hrrrm. Well, good. While they're at it they may as well boost the last remaining Weapon Enhancement - Cannon: Rapid Fire.

There's going to be some existing ships that gain a hanger bay, such as, the Fleet Heavy Escort, which, I might wanna try, now.

Kinda game changey stuff.

The STO reddit seems to think the Beam Overload change is a downgrade, at least partially because of a bug (it only works on some beams, not all).

I tend to use cannons, and I don't think the change has hit consoles yet, though, so I can't tell.

Eh.  Beams remain one of the most expensive uses of weapons energy.  And a 10 sec burst with a cooldown isn't like beam weapons will become "flavor of the month" overnight.

It's a good change, though.

I haven't tried the Beam Overload change. Once I read in DPS chat that Redirecting Arrays + FaW was still significantly outdeepsing the new BO I got less excited. I mean, Withering Barrage + Scatter Volley blows FaW + RA away and I already use that for 90 degree arc meltage.

Rapid Fire is the last of the 4 tac energy weapon enhancements to not be perma-able, now. I really like Rapid Fire but I never use it anymore due to I can perma...everything else and I like perma weapons enhancement.

It's a good change, though.

•Beam Overload now significantly increases the damage of all of your Beam attacks for 10 seconds, instead of only 1.
•The Superweapon Ingenuity Starship Trait now increases the duration of Beam Overload for 5 seconds.

(You can Perma BO as far as I can tell, now, so, there's no cooldown if you get the Trait, and, have 2 copies of BO running, or, enough cooldown reduction going such as with A2B.)

I was lucky. Just after I Started playing.... they made the original series intro and we were in original seriesland for awhile, which, we could stay in and that'd be fine with me. But we didn't, we moved to this and that and now we're moving on to what Angel said.

The only thing that caught my attention in the roadmap stuff, is, Patrols are getting some luv. I didn't look up the details of that luv and don't even know if they're available, but, Space Patrols are fun and it would be nice to have an additional reason to run them, so, fingers crossed that something good happens there.

~~~
I just want to add... dang. How tempting are Jem-Hadars? They have really nice ground skills.. They have a decent look.. And, they're halfway levelled already...
They're set to farm Rep.
Which, is about all I do.. Due to I run a f-ton of Randoms.
21,000 Omega marks.. An obscene amount of unrefined Dil...
It's alt time.
I have 2 fully geared alts, but, I want another toon just like my main. Which... I could do with a Jem... Just like *snap* that.
Except.. no SRO.
SRO is the only thing keeping me from rolling at least 1 - 3 Jems and RTFOing/Repping the bejeezus out of them.
Ships ships..
My first T6 ever, the original and bad-@ssest Escort in the C-store, has become my main ship again and theoretically highest parser (the average parse is a little higher than my previous average).
Reman Vanity shields make it much easier to fly, and, I can appreciate the turn speed and 5 weapons up front in a whole new way with my better use of Intel Raider Flanking, and, what I use now for weapons boosts. Well, and, it has Pilot Maneuvers.
Lately, since abandoning my stint with Beams and Destroyers (FaW and Forget..it *does* have its appeal..) I've been bouncing between the Andorian Pilots and the fleet version of the Magee which has raider flanking *and* pilot maneuvers *and* a 21 turn rate, which, is the best turn rate you can get being Fed aligned. The Magee is a great Raider/Escort. Nearly perfect ship for my purposes. Great boff layout, too.
Losing that weapon up front on the Magee (has 4) instead of having 5 with the Pilot ships, and, having a much better turn rate than the Andorian Pilot is what made the original Pilot the winner. It's way easier for me to fly with the Reman Vanity shield and a couple years or so of flying practice, which, is very fun making. If we're fighting big bags of HPs.. I'd like to hug their rear shield and hull with a Magee, but, for the other 90% of the time I'd just rather have 20% more weapons up front for a consistent ~20% more damage where most of the damage is being dealt from - the front weapons - that can be shooting at ships coming from all directions and who will hopefully explode before I take the time to wheel around to the back of them.. I save some Intel Flanking for the big ships or when it's just convenient to get that bonus damage. The few extra HPs and shield were good for when I got the Andorian Pilots when they were new but now I can't hardly tell the difference. There's a significant difference in maneuverability, though. I think I get a tiny bit more out of the Boff seating, too.
If I could swap to a Magee every time … Dranuur Gauntlet popped... I'd jump out of my Pilot Escort in a heartbeat. But. Since we can't do that. I guess I'll random with the original Pilot Escort and save the Magee for special occasions, such as, when I just want to have Raider Flanking for awhile.
That's the biggest difference between the two ships. One has Raider Flanking and one has 5 weapons up front. Losing that weapon up front just can't make up for (edit: HAVING.. *rollseyes*) the Raider Flanking bonus in fast fights, which, are what make up the majority of most TFOs. Lots of fast fights with smaller guys and a few big bags of HPs (that generally the entire team are focused on) tossed in.
I want to fly a B'Rel.. but.. KDF.. My one KDF is Eng which doesn't fit what I want to do with a B'Rel, and, my C-store Ships (Traits..) are all Fed. So it's like, do I wanna open that can of worms for 1 ship...? Naw. Someday. Fastest turn rate in the game + enhanced battle cloak, gotta try that. It's missing a(n Ensign Boff) seat... but.. All the seats that it does have, are... Universal. Even the Commander seat.
Ships ships!
I don't see any new ones that I like, and I've been looking since the Andorian Pilots, but, my oldest (purchased) one feels brand new and that B'Rel looks fun too. The Magee will definitely see more use, too. For respectable deepsing without a lot of that darn aiming... it's hard to beat the Fleet Recon Destroyer and a boatful of beam arrays.
Disclaimer: Besides having my own preferences, my ship opinions are all non-lockbox based. I don't use any consoles that aren't relatively easy to obtain by anyone, either. No lobi consoles. No ship specific consoles. Nothing but Rep/Fleet stuff and an old Phoenix box console (Crystalline whatsits). I used to use some Mish stuff, too, but not currently afaicanremember.
Ymmv! a lot  : )
So, I made the newb..
If you're like me and haven't made a newb in awhile, it's different. I LOVE the fact that I can fly a t6 at level 10.. I can go an entire level without even getting one new skill on the Ship Mastery tree, and I can't use Starship Masteries until level 50, but, I *luv* the fact that I can fly my has-less-weapons-to-buy-for Event Raider.. and be working my way towards the Cold Hearted Starship Trait....now...instead of just grinding away on Patrols when I'm 50.. Getting Ship Masteries has become a by-product of levelling.. Bra..vo.
The old Mish Ships you get as you Level are Boring to me, now. When I was a newb...? Everything was *wow*. That was then, and now, I'm glad to be doing Pahvo's (1 of 2 TFOs you get to run at level 10) in my Raider who is in Flank Heaven - instead of something that I might not be in the mood to pilot. I don't need Newb progression to teach me that there are different ships and how to fly them, anymore. Now, I want to fly what I want to fly.
Choice, is a good thing, especially if you've made many newbs and flown the same ships over and over already.. Now, I can fly my Current Main Ships (that are happily Account Bound).. The ships I Have Fun In. And, it's great.
I hit up allll the Reclaim buttons with allll my Account Bound Goodies... and started gearing up, too. I'm using Phasers for the first time, due to, I have phaser gear that...levels with me. I don't need the grind of levelling gear. Boring. It's ok as a new-newb, but, there's tons other timesinks I know about, now, and am fine with skipping this one. When I get to 65 I'm gonna dump almost all of that gear anyway..
Anyway, yeah. It's been a good experience so far up to level 20. Way better than my last newb. If I could get SRO as a Jem-Hadar, I probably would have just done that. Man, they start out nice. Set Gear for both Space and Ground.. They have points in the Intelligence Tree already... They're set to start rep and endgame which, for me, is kinda the cherry spot to be.
Being a Rom newb hasn't been as... smooth as a Jem, but, the levelling experience, so far, has been more fun and less tedium than it was the last times, except, the first time. I was already running Advance Space Queues (the only one you can) at level <20 (OK... immediately after dinging 10...) and making a... barely passable showing. I've done way better and seen way worse.
You can run an Elite TFO at level 10 now, too, btw... lol. For the really advanced kids.
