If you never wanted to play a Romulan, but, you wanted to experience the not-so-impressiveness that is Warbirds - your chance is coming.

https://www.arcgames.com/en/games/star-trek-online/news/detail/11206743

I went from thinking that Warbirds were OP, to, never wanting to fly them again. *shrug* Can be, I just don't pilot them properly. It was a great newb ship though when I was a newb-newb and the game was all new.

A fairly interesting update..

https://www.arcgames.com/en/games/star-trek-online/news/detail/11228103-pc-and-console-patch-notes-for-8%2F8%2F19

Now that I've finally ditched my beams for cannons....again.....they've majorly upgraded Beam Overload.. Hrrrm. Well, good. While they're at it they may as well boost the last remaining Weapon Enhancement - Cannon: Rapid Fire.

There's going to be some existing ships that gain a hanger bay, such as, the Fleet Heavy Escort, which, I might wanna try, now.

Kinda game changey stuff.

The STO reddit seems to think the Beam Overload change is a downgrade, at least partially because of a bug (it only works on some beams, not all).

I tend to use cannons, and I don't think the change has hit consoles yet, though, so I can't tell.

Eh.  Beams remain one of the most expensive uses of weapons energy.  And a 10 sec burst with a cooldown isn't like beam weapons will become "flavor of the month" overnight.

It's a good change, though.

I was lucky. Just after I Started playing.... they made the original series intro and we were in original seriesland for awhile, which, we could stay in and that'd be fine with me. But we didn't, we moved to this and that and now we're moving on to what Angel said.

The only thing that caught my attention in the roadmap stuff, is, Patrols are getting some luv. I didn't look up the details of that luv and don't even know if they're available, but, Space Patrols are fun and it would be nice to have an additional reason to run them, so, fingers crossed that something good happens there.

~~~
I just want to add... dang. How tempting are Jem-Hadars? They have really nice ground skills.. They have a decent look.. And, they're halfway levelled already...
They're set to farm Rep.
Which, is about all I do.. Due to I run a f-ton of Randoms.
21,000 Omega marks.. An obscene amount of unrefined Dil...
It's alt time.
I have 2 fully geared alts, but, I want another toon just like my main. Which... I could do with a Jem... Just like *snap* that.
Except.. no SRO.
SRO is the only thing keeping me from rolling at least 1 - 3 Jems and RTFOing/Repping the bejeezus out of them.
Disclaimer: Besides having my own preferences, my ship opinions are all non-lockbox based. I don't use any consoles that aren't relatively easy to obtain by anyone, either. No lobi consoles. No ship specific consoles. Nothing but Rep/Fleet stuff and an old Phoenix box console (Crystalline whatsits). I used to use some Mish stuff, too, but not currently afaicanremember.
So, I made the newb..
If you're like me and haven't made a newb in awhile, it's different. I LOVE the fact that I can fly a t6 at level 10.. I can go an entire level without even getting one new skill on the Ship Mastery tree, and I can't use Starship Masteries until level 50, but, I *luv* the fact that I can fly my has-less-weapons-to-buy-for Event Raider.. and be working my way towards the Cold Hearted Starship Trait....now...instead of just grinding away on Patrols when I'm 50.. Getting Ship Masteries has become a by-product of levelling.. Bra..vo.
The old Mish Ships you get as you Level are Boring to me, now. When I was a newb...? Everything was *wow*. That was then, and now, I'm glad to be doing Pahvo's (1 of 2 TFOs you get to run at level 10) in my Raider who is in Flank Heaven - instead of something that I might not be in the mood to pilot. I don't need Newb progression to teach me that there are different ships and how to fly them, anymore. Now, I want to fly what I want to fly.
Choice, is a good thing, especially if you've made many newbs and flown the same ships over and over already.. Now, I can fly my Current Main Ships (that are happily Account Bound).. The ships I Have Fun In. And, it's great.
I hit up allll the Reclaim buttons with allll my Account Bound Goodies... and started gearing up, too. I'm using Phasers for the first time, due to, I have phaser gear that...levels with me. I don't need the grind of levelling gear. Boring. It's ok as a new-newb, but, there's tons other timesinks I know about, now, and am fine with skipping this one. When I get to 65 I'm gonna dump almost all of that gear anyway..
Anyway, yeah. It's been a good experience so far up to level 20. Way better than my last newb. If I could get SRO as a Jem-Hadar, I probably would have just done that. Man, they start out nice. Set Gear for both Space and Ground.. They have points in the Intelligence Tree already... They're set to start rep and endgame which, for me, is kinda the cherry spot to be.
Being a Rom newb hasn't been as... smooth as a Jem, but, the levelling experience, so far, has been more fun and less tedium than it was the last times, except, the first time. I was already running Advance Space Queues (the only one you can) at level <20 (OK... immediately after dinging 10...) and making a... barely passable showing. I've done way better and seen way worse.
You can run an Elite TFO at level 10 now, too, btw... lol. For the really advanced kids.
Ugh. Upgrade weekend. That slowed the levelling down. But, back to it now, and, it's not all about the flashy ships or fast XP... It is, of course, about the meat and potatoes of the game... THE MISHES..
Which, provide *whistle* lewt..
https://sto.gamepedia.com/Ability:_Focused_Assault
https://sto.gamepedia.com/Quantum_Phase_Catalysts#Quantum_Phase_Torpedo
I'm leaning towards good old Phasers on this ship (and wanted more gear that levels with me), so, yay, it made me decide to try this set and it's really, really, good. I can't believe I missed this one until now. The shield destroying torp is very nice on Spread, and, the Death Beam from the 3-piece set seems to be very effective so far.
I was not only surviving, but, getting agro in a Starbase One Advanced .. at level 30, just now. Man how times change.
My Engine, half my consoles and most of my weapons are levelling with me and I hardly have to mess with redoing hotkeys. Man! How times change.
Anyway, yay. I didn't even know about either of those mish rewards until recently and they can both be really nice if you've got a use for them, sooo, figured I'd mention them. If for nothing else - that Quantum Phase set is uber noob gear. I'd like to try and figure out how to fit that torp and the 2-piece set (it doubles the shield drain) on my Mains. Once the shields go down it's all over with and that thing knocks'em down fast.
You won't have to be a Rom to fly a Warbird!
To me, this is shades of CoH..
https://www.arcgames.com/en/games/star-trek-online/news/detail/11240293
CoH made a queue system and made it easy to join/use. Then they started adding to it. I've been a fan of queueing for content ever since. Taking hours to put and hold together teams has its own reward and I'm glad I got to experience that. Now I like to *click* *team* *play*, with, the option to team up any old-fashioned way I want.
I hope they keep expanding on the STO queue system, like, CoH was really doing good at. It's where I spend most of my time, usually, and, yeah, I think queueing for content has a lot of potential. I'm always glad to read about effort going towards new queueing options.
As my newb sits at home on the couch, cashing in RTFO marks boxes for levelling Rep while I make a new newb... It occurs to me as I visit newb-land again for the second time in a long time.. it's really worth doing some mishes for gear, if for nothing else. You just can't beat good gear that levels with you up to MK XII. The tedium avoided in not having to upgrade gear throughout the levels, alone, makes time spent in mishes a good investment for gear - making them more than a guilty pleasure for those of us like me who mostly want to just level up and gear up for endgame. For those of use who want to play the same game they've been playing with a new build idea to work towards without losing the old one.
I mean, you can just make 1 tac/sci/eng and then gear and retcon them into whatever you want (I thought about doing this so I didn't have to do Rep/Masteries/Skills/Traits/etc etc all over again..) but I want to keep playing a couple of my old builds and keep tweaking their build to do what it does, better + play something new and tweak the new builds. So. Newbs. And the less newb drudgery the better.
Yay  : )
Hope it's good. There's already 3 good TFOs available to newbs, now. You can even run an Elite queue at lvl 10, now.. I run them on Advanced while levelling and get Rep components and marks in-between doing mishes and patrols and ding after every run up until level I-forget.
I gave up on Sci/Torps, again, recently, thinking, why oh why didn't I make him Tac/why am I swimming against the tide.
Then.. I got back in a Fleet Temporal Warship with 5 weapon slots up front and 3 places for my 3 gold mine launchers in back. This time, though, I stacked on all the Temporal EPG goodness I could - dumping everything from Tac except Kemo I and Torpedoes III.
Sci just has too much EPG boost ability to ignore if you want to build on a toon's strengths and Temporal probably has the most EPG ability of any command seat. Temporal also has 2 very effective pbaoe Shield Drains (which go well with Torps and Mines..), 1 of which can be a very nice shield heal at the same time.
I haven't parsed as well as I have with my Tac/Cannons, yet (no surprise), but... it feels kinda like that. I can queue up for... anything.. and it's fun. Like with Tac/Cannons. I can join Tzenkethi Front and Battle of Procyon 5 (advanced) and it's.. fun. I think people don't generally join those 2 queues for fun unless they're happy with their Kung Fu and want a challenge in queues that reward good Kung Fu (and punish bad).
Anyway, Yay. Dust off those Sci and grab some Temporal Goodness if Deeps is your thing. You probably have already.. I feel really slow for just now doing it. But here you are, a heads-up, just in case you've not - it's fun and effective  : ) Try a Temporal Warship if you happen to be torps/mines and definitely grab a Wargames Engine to go with it.
