Prior event information:

We're celebrating Halloween, City of Heroes style. Of course, we can't bring back trick-or-treating, but we'll come as close as we can. Halloween Costume Contests, A Player Run Event in the spirit of the season, and some darker trivia of CoH Lore await this six-hour event, Saturday, October 29th from 5pm to 11pm Eastern Time.

Costume Contest Themes for Halloween Fest:

80's Horror: In the spirit of the new show, Stranger Things, we want you to try your hand at bringing 1980's Horror movies back to life. It can be movie related (Freddy Kreuger, Jason, Michael Meyers, etc.), TV Related (Tales From The Darkside, Twin Peaks... sadly, the bulk of Stephen King's miniseries landed in the 1990s, so we'll make an exception for Salem's Lot or IT which bookend the decade by one year), or from the world of comic books. Or you can do your own take (Trapper Keeper Killer, Legwarmer Litch, etc.)
Classic Monsters: Bring us your best classic monster for Halloween! We welcome Draculas, Frankenstein's Monster, Mummies, Werewolves, and Witches.
Mad Scientists: Perversions of nature, bastions of the dark sciences, and Air Quality Management District personnel unite! Any mad scientist creation is welcome, lab coat optional. This contest we'll check character RP Bios as well as the costume.
Best In Show: No ladder, no limits. Just come with your best Halloween Costume, regardless of what the theme is. ("No ladder, no limits" means prior winners and contestants of other contests are welcome to enter this theme, as well as new entrants.)

As with the Anniversary Events, we'll name three places for each contest, with the top place earning a forum title on Titan Network to commemorate their win.

This is advanced notice to get your costumes ready starting now. The rules will be similar to our Costume Contest Thursdays:

DB Edits and costume hacking IS ALLOWED. That being said, be reasonable. Don't bring a non-humanoid costume to the event (such as vehicles or rulaaru) and avoid premade 'asset models' (like whole copies of members of Freedom Phalanx, Arachnos, etc.)
Emotes and powers effects will not be considered in the contest. (Auras or any effect selectable in Icon will be allowed... anyone can cast a emote. It takes preparation to get your costume parts to "glow" to some degree, with or without an aura.)
SharedDB/Multibox participants, only one entry per contest title per Global Name. This is to ensure that more than one handful of people attend the contest no matter how many characters appear, and that everyone has a fair shot of winning. You may pick one contestant and send the rest of them into the audience.

Well, I finally got Paragon Chat to work!

I made a character for the Mad Scientist category, assuming I can get on for that. There might be an RP in FF14 that day, and if it's actually in game I'll have to do that instead. But if it's in Discord I might be able to have Paragon Chat open at the same time...

Is it OK to take my Mad Scientist character to one of the Thursday costume contests or will that make me ineligible for the big one on the 29th? Thanks!

Not at all! Prior winners of Costume Contest Thursdays are welcome to enter Halloween Fest costumes, no problem.

In fact, it would be good practice even if you don't win the Thursday contests as the next two weeks of themes lead right up to the event.

It's a Paragon Chat original.

While the giant mansion as well as the models and figures are in-game assets, the island is unique to here. But it is a limited engagement. It disappears on November 1st when the original Croatoa map is restored. Go check it out today and tomorrow if you like.

The trivia contest was postponed. We held it during the last hour as my math sucks and I set the GMT times on the poster one hour AFTER we were supposed to close. So we stayed another hour to keep our European friends company if they stuck around.

The Mysterious Island appears over Croatoa for the last half of October each year; while the rest of the city is covered in darkness.

It's part of the Paragon Chat Halloween event. The exact timing for the event is between 00:00 UTC on October 15 and 13:00 UTC on November 1 (to make sure everything lasts well past midnight on Halloween for all time zones).

Obviously it's a little late showing up this year since it was introduced in version 1.6.0.2. released on Friday. All part of the mysteriousness!

I saw 58 from the server console a little while before the crash. It was probably northward of 60 by the time the server went down.

It took a while to recover but it did get back up to 50 again later. It probably could have gone higher because by then I had isolated the problem with the server that was limiting scalability and resolved it.
