Costume Contest ThursdaysEvery Thursday at 5:30pm Pacific/8:30pm Eastern in Atlas Park.To continue the tradition started by Steven Munger in Facebook, HERC is going to host Costume Contests until his return. (IF he returns? We're almost two years into this now.)
Every week we'll announce a theme, or go themeless and during that week anything goes. Questions? Comments? Use this thread.
Instructions: The event is held in Atlas Park in Paragon Chat (it's the first zone you land in after character creation... you can also hit the train if you're hero-side, or use "/mapmove 1" to get there from anywhere else.
Mapmove basics explained here.) The event floor will be the Atlas Park Statue. The judges will stand in the center of the square and ask contestants to line up on the side of the square facing City Hall.
To participate, line up before the event starts and the judges will pick a winning design out of the contestants ("How" a winner is picked is left up to the Host/Judges.) If you want to watch as the audience, no problem, simply stand behind the Host and Judge inside the square.
Rules:- Honor thy start time: asking to join once the event has started will not be honored. The host may delay the start time at their sole discretion. Be advised that once the event is underway no further entrants will be considered. If you're not in line please stay in the audience until the event is complete.
- Stick to the theme. Unless a themeless contest is announced (called in various ways: Anything Goes, Free For All, Designer's Delight, etc.), please make sure your costume is related to the theme. Understand that all of the niche corners of Geekdom and media enthusiasm is not available or appealing to everyone: There are many different tastes and preferences under the sun. Getting to the point: this means that not every judge will be well versed in Comic Books, Movies, Pop Culture ...some judges may not even be American for that matter. If the judge doesn't 'get' the costume and sends you a tell asking clarification what it is about, please be patient and reply to them on what you intended. It can only help you to win the contest. Otherwise, it is entirely up to the judge to decide if your costume follows the theme or not.
- Costume parts and methods are NOT limited. Anything goes: Free parts, parts once under Paragon Market, NPC parts used in Database Editing. The only limiting factor to using parts not available in the costume editor is knowledge, not price or status.
- One costume per entry AND global name, please. Unless otherwise specified, changing costumes once the event starts results in disqualification. (We're judging individual costumes, not whole toons.) Also: concerning multiple instances, please pick one entry and have the rest of your instances join the audience. (This is to allow for a fair chance to win for players who can't "multibox" because of the use of low-end systems.) We will politely ask if this is the case; ignoring the judge or refusing to enter only one character will result in disqualification. NOTE: During a few HERC Quarterly Events, we do have Group Costume Contests available for multibox players to show off their creations. (Those are usually 'themeless' so you can bring what you like. Keep your eyes peeled for those.)
- Emotes and Biographies are not required. Any emotes, dances, and non-costume editor applied effects will NOT be a consideration for a winning costume. (Auras, glow, and anything with light or animation effects that are available in Icon IS WELCOME.) Feel free to dance or use a power effect, of course, but be considerate. (See "Be Nice" below.) Emotes, role play and biographies are of neutral interest (it isn't frowned upon, but not required either.)
- Repeat Entries are welcome week-to-week at your own risk. (You might win with the same costume both weeks, but don't count on it unless your costume addresses multiple themes in a row somehow.)
- The judge's decisions are final. Remember: opinion is subjective. And with the above rule, if you feel that strongly that your costume is award winning, enter it again another time!
This event is also subject to HERC's Activity Rules for all events and contests,
posted here. In short:
- Be nice. Don't boo folks or grief others.
- Event Staff cannot win. (Note that Radio Stations are free to join if they are not covering the contest on the air.)
- Please follow judge instructions at the time of the event.
