Black Panther
« on: February 19, 2018, 02:30:04 AM »
This movie is one of the best Marvel movies in the MCU since The Winter Soldier in my opinion. I'm glad we get to see an all black superhero movie that's done right with no stereotypes towards black people. I love how they use the African culture in the movie. I love the score, one of the best soundtrack so far. I love how the movie treats the cast like it's another superhero movie like what Wonder Woman did and I strongly believe that everyone should be treated equally no matter what gender, race, and sexuality you are. I know I sound political but, the movie is a little political and it does have a message in there. My favorite character is Killmonger because he's sympathetic and I understand his motivation and why he's doing to it. Killmonger is one of the best villains in the MCU since Vulture and Loki.

Spoiler for Hidden:

I still like Captain America: Winter Soldier a little more, but I have to say it's a REALLY really good film.

Non-spoiler review.

Black Panther.  9.5 out of 10.  Why are you still reading this, when you could be standing in line to see it?

The Good:

The cast.  I believe this movie has the strongest cast of any MCU movie.  Chadwick Boseman is awesome as T"Challa.  Michael B. Jordan has an extremely strong portrayal as Erik Killmonger.  Danai Gurira as Okoye - the head of the Dora Milaje - could have been a throw away character but is a very interesting and deep secondary character.  I have very few complaints about the casting in the movie from top to bottom.  I'd say the weakest cast member was probably Martin Freeman, but that's less due to his acting and more to the role he had to play in this movie as the outsider.

The portrayal of women.  The women in general are very strong characters, from Angela Basette as T'Challa's mother to Letitia Wright as his sister and head of science and technology for the country of Wakanda - aka Wakandan's answer to Tony Stark.  Okoye in particular I found very well done as a character.  She was strong, had personality, had her own internal compass and her own internal conflict and her own internal resolutions.

The African connection.  Better and more appropriate people than I will better articulate this, but the movie's infusion of a foreign culture that is not just a derivative of western American culture that stands alone is commendable.  The movie isn't just diverse in casting, or even in point of view, but in total perspective.  When Shuri wide-cracks casually about "colonizers" it seemed perfectly normal.

The villain.  Erik Killmonger is in my opinion the second best MCU villain after Loki and probably one of the best super hero movie genre villains period.  He reminds me most of Magneto from the first X-Men movie, coincidentally and amusingly also named Erik.  Magneto is a Holocaust survivor who believes humanity will do to mutants what the Germans once did to Jews and others, and he's not entirely wrong.  He believes this justifies any act in his war against humanity.  Erik Killmonger has a similar kind of motivation in that whether you agree with him or not, you can understand him.  His actions brand him a villain, but he isn't an impossible to understand one.  You almost root for him.

The Bad:

The CGI was weak at times, but it was never distracting for me.  Also, my popcorn was a little stale.

Watch for:

In the prologue there is an appearance by an younger T'Chaka, T'Challa's father.  He bears an uncanny resemblance to John Kani, the actor who played T'Challa in Captain America the Winter Soldier.  That's because he's played by John Kani's son.  No CGI de-aging there.

Overall:

What, you're still here?  Go, buy ticket.  Watch movie.

There's a lot I could say about this movie.  But bottom line, its a great movie.  It is a great super hero movie, and it is a great MCU movie, but even if you've never seen an MCU movie before, even if you've seen MCU movies before and hated them, go see this movie.  This is just a really good film.

Not sure if this is a significant spoiler, but:

Spoiler for Hidden:
Maybe the intent is for the reveal itself to be a major plot point of Infinity War

I hope people from Warner and DC were in the audience taking notes.

They really need to step up the game. Marvel just kills them in the films.

Probably the most enjoyable Marvel movie for me. Didn't feel so much like a superhero movie (in a good way). Everything was otherworldly, including the scenes outside of Wakanda. Score/soundtrack was awesome. Actors were amazing. Plot was typical but true to the source.

However, a few complaints:
  • So much going on that T'Challa got lost amongst it, betweeen the Dora Milaje, Shuri, M'Baku, Killmonger, and Wakanda, itself.
  • Spoiler for Hidden:
    Villains die.
  • In particular, Klaw was such a huge, colossal waste.

The WB people don't read comics so they're unlikely to watch comic book movies.

So far they've shown no sign that they're even aiming as high as making mediocre movies.

I didn't think so. Enjoyed it a lot. Certainly better then most of their other ones.

That's what I said - it was an awful movie, so it was a major step up from their other efforts.

Finally saw it. Liked it and I hate almost everything. Was formulaic but had actual likable characters and wasn't wall to wall dad jokes. Also Man-Ape!

  • In particular, Klaw was such a huge, colossal waste.

Spoiler for Hidden:
He'd make a terrific underpants gnome though. So he steals the rarest, most valuable substance in the world from the most advanced nation in the world. Hides from their worldwide network of spies for 10 years. Robs a museum to steal more vibranium so he can trade for diamonds he could have stolen from a much less advanced nation probably adjacent to the one he actually robbed, or from an exchange without getting on Wakanda's radar.

In 2008, WB, with ownership of the entire DC universe, released the Dark Knight, one of the greatest comic book movies of all time - in the same year Marvel released Iron Man as an attempt to start a cinematic universe in spite of not owning the rights to the Fantastic Four, Spider-man or the X-Men.

10 years later, a Black Panther movie made more in its second weekend than a Justice League movie did in its first.

Does the dictionary even have a word for this level of incompetence and self-humiliation?

Well, imo, Dark Knight was a horror show... and I don't mean genre-wise. It's everything that a superhero movie should never be.

Finally saw this.  I thought the Fresh Prince of Bel Air style music in the intro with the kids playing basketball was cute.  It was even cuter when Killmonger came into the throne room and it started upside down and rotated around to him sitting in the throne.

That said, I liked everyone in the movie except Killmonger.  He was just an angry stereotype with no charisma.  The armored rhinos had more interesting personalities.  But I'll give him a pass as the catalyst that set the events in motion which allowed all the other characters to shine.  In many ways, all the supporting characters outshone the titular hero as well as the villain.  And the setting of Wakanda was wonderfully realized, too.  The conflict between Black Panther and Killmonger seemed... small, somehow, in the scheme of things.  Central to what was going on, but dwarfed by it all as well.

It's too bad they killed Klaw, though.
When you insult someone by calling them a "pig" or a "dog" you aren't maligning pigs and dogs everywhere.  The same is true of any term used as an insult.
