There's a whole lot for me to laugh at in this series.

I've been eyeing it warily.  I rarely like Steve Carell.  And I really dislike The Office, which the description seems to want to link it to.  On the other hand - John Malkovitch.

On the other hand - John Malkovitch.

I never was a particularly big fan but he is kinda perfect in this.

I rarely like Steve Carell.

I saw him in 40 Year Old Virgin and fairly well enjoyed it and that's all I can think of atm. He's good in this, too.

I've been eyeing it warily.

Seriously? I think it takes less time to actually just watch the thing  : ) It's funny! You'll like it. Or, you won't. Those, are the two options  : ) I like it.

I didn't set the bar very high at all for the show. It said New + Space + had a funny lead, and, yeah, I think the show wouldn't be nearly as engaging without JM to balance out the tightness in the pantsness from SC. Like I said, never was a particularly large fan of JM, but, he is fairly well perfect in this. The show very likely won't blow your mind but I find it to be a very acceptable diversion with a great/engaging topic/concept (Space! Space....Force!) and a certain smartness and funniness.

By "eyeing it warily" I mean that there are a queuetillion things on Netflix for me to watch, but it keeps putting that under my nose and I keep considering squeezing it in to break up my watch grind.  Of course, that I keep doing that is in no small part why I'll never fully catch up...  ;)

Well, if this helps - I'm nearly certain that you'll enjoy it more than Lukelele.

I've got a ton of things in my queue, too. I think I haven't finished one series that I've started except.... Star Trek re-re-re-re-rereruns hehe. This was a fresh break from all of that, for me. I think it really helps a lot if you're into Space (duh, I guess) and I think it helped for me that when I was a kid I remember after going to the moon we thought we could do anything ("well, we sent a man to the moon!"), and, this show is supposed to be about "putting boots on the moon!", which, does kinda seem like a nifty thing to try again.

I'm no huge fan (or un-fan) of anyone at all in this show (yet?), but, if you do happen to be a bigish John M. fan then I would think this would kinda be a must see.

And that is all the effort I'm gonna put into selling this! It's not the kinda show that is going to blow your socks off, but, yeah, it's a good addition to the queue, and, it's new and in its first season (that I haven't finished yet..), and, I like the theme and chemistries so far.

If it shares anything in common with The Office, it's the general level of tongue-in-cheek humor that comes from putting the characters in situations that are only barely absurd.  There's none of the faux-documentary style where the characters speak directly into the camera.

I have to say, starting with the very next episode I watched after posting... the magic seemed to fade.. I was like, hey, this was really good, wasn't it? Wasn't it? And I caught the first episode again, today, and it reminded me that, yes, the show was good.

The first season ends good, too. You have to wonder what'll happen.

So, yeah.. Excellent start, I thought. Very good. Great concept. Good characters. New 4 star general commanding the new Space Force who has power and knows how to abuse it. Brilliant/aloof scientist mastermind. Horny Space Monkeys being manipulated in sign language to go out into space and use power tools... Hijinks with the Joint Chiefs of Staff and a POTUS who will revoke nookie privileges if you're not a winner and started it all by tweeting he wanted boobs on the moon - but they're 'pretty' sure he meant to say booTs.

The middle part of the season is kinda meh as we stray from the winning formula but still ok, and, the end of the season seems to kinda get back on track with a situation In Space that makes you wonder what would happen if that really happened and where they will go next. They even manage to start to make the media manager guy not completely unrelatable and unlikable.

I have to of course see what will happen on the moon, next season. As far as this season goes.... Well, I'm glad I watched it. It started out extremely promising and it ended with promise. I'd also say that it's not quite like anything else in my queue. It's plausible but totally not and semi-current eventy but totally not. I think I counted 5 or 6 movie actors as regular characters.

I think what maybe turned me off of the middle part of the season was dreading this long drawn out cliche reveal with JM that never really happened, and, I was being a lil overcritical due to posting here.

Maybe?

I dunno but I watched it again and all good  : ) Good series. Some characters are a lil weak in this first season but still interesting and with potential. Great concept. They left off in an interesting place, too.

Little disappointed TBH. I couldn't figure out why she's in jail for one thing (don't really like the actress much anyway), but they did leave an interesting cliffhanger.

Yeah I dunno why she's there, either. In the first episode she was excited about getting a new house after the general got his promotion iirc (and then crying when she found out they were moving to Denver). I like her from past stuff (that I can't think of a single thing right now I just remember her face) and am trying to like her in this but get distracted by ... her current face. It looks (surgically) numb and unnatural. The whole situation with her is kinda uncomfortable. I don't think it's badly done I just am not into it.

I think the Space Forcy type relationships like those between the 1 star general and Naird and Mallory and the Joint Chiefs and POTUS and various scientists and China are interesting and funny but the personal relationships are much less so to me. I respect that they're going for the non-typical with relationships and it works well enough it's just not what I tune in for and is usually less interesting than the whole Space thing.

hehe *shrug*

Fred Willard is good, though - on the personal relationship side thing. More so than probably any of the rest. Naird and his daughter works ok. It just keeps getting less interesting after that. I'm way more interested in the Space Forcy stuff.

I was a little sad when he first appeared.  He did a marvelous job, though.  Going to miss seeing that guy.

@zev

She's from Friends (the ditsy blonde) and likely why I don't like her from the start. :p

They seem to be aiming the father/daughter thing the same way it was done in Eureka I think with the chopper pilot being like his deputy (in Eureka).

The joint chiefs reminds me of the Austin powers films. There's so much about the show that is "saw that coming a mile away" (see the space part of the ending of S1).

I think the difference is that in Austin Powers no one took themselves seriously whereas the Joint Chiefs take themselves completely seriously - it's just us that don't.

Yeah it was definitely sad to learn he passed when reading the end credits but like you said, he went out on top of his game. He's got to be one of the most likeable characters in the show and probably The most likeable character that isn't involved with the (stuff I'm interested in) Space Force stuff. It makes me wonder why he was still acting but he seemed to be enjoying himself and was surely doing a fine job.

OH YEAH! Ok now I remember. Sorta. I think I never sat through an entire episode of Friends but I kinda remember her now.
