My new thing
« on: October 05, 2020, 03:46:36 PM »
I guess this kinda thing is old news by now but it's new to me and it's about 99% of what's on my TV when Neverwinter isn't:

Gamer TV..

I'm talking about TV where someone(s) sit and play. And play. Sometimes there's commentary and sometimes it's just an expert walkthrough without a word.

Did you know that Gurls play video games now, too? I always thought that was fake news. There's undeniable evidence on Gamer TV, though.

It's still kinda in its infancy I would think and there isn't always something I particularly want to see but even as-is, well, yeah, it's ~ 99% of what I have playing when I'm not playing.

https://pluto.tv/live-tv/ign is an example. There's a couple of other channels on Pluto that I've watched too.

Props to Pluto, too. I didn't even have to make an account with them or give them any info at all and I have access to a significant amount of HD quality video to watch as long as I don't mind watching a few commercials. They just added a 70's and 90's channel to their 80's channel and I think they just added more stuff too but I haven't really been paying attention. They have a lot of channels. For me anyway, I found a lot to watch. Some nice Old stuff (gems) that I've not seen in a long time is the standout to me among the non-gamer stuff.

I would rather use my PC/TV for playing but when I'm not I'm watching Pluto, and, almost always have it on one of their few gaming channels.

Netflix just got the last season of The Good Place and.. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.. and.. there is some other stuff too, I'm sure, but, yeah, who has the time? Game On.

Xev out of curiosity given this is a CoH forum and everything... did you ever happen to get around to, y'know, playing CoH again?

So there : P

Nannie poopie.

Must have been a different Vee, i've not played CO since the beta. Not questioning your credentials, just remembered from another thread you saying you hadn't gotten around to it yet and you've already missed the heavily populated days.

I've been watching playthroughs of games for nearly a decade now, just not streamed.  Usually old games I've already beaten, not new ones that I want to play myself.  I much prefer games without commentary (or with text-based commentary) because I like to hear the games' music and sound effects, not someone chattering over the whole thing (and, for some reason, reading every bit of text out loud, like it's a 1970s cartoon for small children where they assume the target audience can't read).

So I like the channels where there's no voiceover.  For example:

https://www.youtube.com/recordedamigagames/videos (despite the title, it's not just Amiga games)
https://www.youtube.com/user/DerSchmu (though this one is mostly C64 games)
https://www.youtube.com/user/Krizalid99v2/videos (fighting games, often with hacks to play as the bosses)
https://www.youtube.com/user/AdmiralMcFish/videos (ditto)

Sometimes I want just boss fights:

https://www.youtube.com/c/Shadowserg/videos
https://www.youtube.com/c/Fr0mWisdomT0Hate/videos

And sometimes I want to skip to the good parts:

Hrrrm the in-game name isn't Vee. I got you mixed up with someone else I can't even seem to remember that's been playing since, probably, beta. My bad.

CoH's heavily populated days isn't usually what I think of when I remember CoH. I mean, I miss them sure, but, when I think of CoH the image that nearly always comes to mind is the world coming to an end and we all knew it was coming and there wasn't a thing we could do about it except make the most of our last moments and say our goodbyes - that image is followed by the feeling of being in the world I had come to be very happy to be in one second and the next I was looking at a screenful of "You Have Been Disconnected" and then I think of how we all handled how the world ended and how telling it was. CoH was at its realest. This is what I generally think of when I think of CoH.

When CoH was (apparently) revived I was deep into STO. Then I finally got unmetered Internet again and finally got to play the sequel to the first ever graphical online mmo which was also the first ever graphical online MMO I ever played - Neverwinter. I didn't expect to leave STO completely but I seem to have for now. It's still a great game I'm just not playing it lately.

Today... I actually have been thinking about CoH lately in a thinking about trying to play it kinda way. I am getting a little Neverwinter burnout already. If I play any game outside of whatever Cryptic is currently doing it for sure will be CoH unless some unforeseen thing happens (an alien technology console drops from the sky complete with online account and games or maybe I'm abducted by aliens and they have videos game that they want me to try, or, ya know, something like that).

Anyway, way more info that you or anyone else wanted, but, there it is. A peek into my wondrous mind.

I've been watching playthroughs of games for nearly a decade now, just not streamed.

Wow.

I never have been much for Youtube or similar type Internet.... programming for I dunno what reason. (Lukulele ring a bell to anyone..?) They had to put this stuff on something that looks like TV, for me, before I noticed it. I mean I imagine that the exact same content that I am watching on Pluto came from Youtube or somewhere else on the net but for some reason it hadn't caught my attention until I saw it on "TV". Also, I'm not looking for anything specific. I just like watching people play and I like seeing what's new out there.

I do use Youtube a lot for Neverwinter, though.. It's like a requirement to play the game.. If you haven't done your youtubes before some content (hard dungeons) some ppl won't even talk to you and I'm not kidding.

Youtube is absolutely a great source for gaming info (and how to clean your air conditioner and how to replace a broken weedhacker pull string and.. and..  : ) so I do use it, but, the experience I am enjoying with the "TV channels" is just tuning in to be entertained.. It's that we have our own channel and it's dedicated to entertaining people like us.

OH here's a good example.. Lol I would never ever ever do a Youtube search on Wil Wheaton being a DM in a D&D session but Gamer "TV" got me to watch hours of it (mostly during chores..). I didn't even know it was him until like the second time I tuned in and they were playing a further episode and I saw Wil Wheaton in the title of the content and was trying to figure out why they put his name in there and then.. it dawned on me that the nerdy bearded DM was him..

He seems like a pretty darn good DM btw.

...(despite the title, it's not just Amiga games)
...(though this one is mostly C64 games)

Amiga and C64 hehe. Memory lane. Commodore used to have the most games of any PC, for years, when I worked at a retail software reseller. They had the most shelves of games. PC came next. Apple was in there somewhere but their niche was mostly in educational stuff due to that's how Apple was keeping their foot in the door. Mac had a few (square pixels ftw!). Amiga had a few but what they had blew everything else away graphicwise. Way away. Way way away. : )

Anyway yay and thx  : )

On the Pluto.tv side of this story.. I just this morning watched the Jerry Lewis show on Pluto.. A short marathon of it.. Whether you are a Jerry Lewis fan like me or not doesn't matter - what's important, is, watching the Jerry Lewis show is like getting your hands on good bootleg video. You never see it. It's this special thing. Even when I was a kid and that show wasn't as old as it is now you couldn't get it on TV. They never showed it. The only reason I even knew it existed already is that I saw a total of 1 episode in my life (I think during the when satellite tv was new days and you just saw random programming everywhere).

So, yeah. Shout out again to Pluto. They aren't the greatest thing since sliced bread or anything. Except sometimes they are. Don't even have to make an account..

CoH was revived?  I didn't get the memo.  Mind you, I don't have a good way to game on PC right now.

I just recently started on season 2 of The Good Place.  I put it off because season 1 was a complete enough story on its own and I felt like anything more would turn into a rambling train wreck.  So far it seems like I was right.

There have been multiple avenues to watch other people play games for quite some time now.  Personally, it's never appealed to me.  I get annoyed having to watch and listen to them just for short guides because in this video age no one wants to just post a pic and write a short description.
When you insult someone by calling them a "pig" or a "dog" you aren't maligning pigs and dogs everywhere.  The same is true of any term used as an insult.

I'll watch game vids for a couple reasons - if i get stuck in a game and a google doesn't give me a fast answer, or if i get to the point in a game where I either hate the gameplay or realize i'm not going to be good enough to finish and i want to see the rest of the story. i'll occasionally watch a speedrun of an old game if I have a few minutes i need to kill. in any of those scenarios I don't want the person talking over the vid.

Hey now! hehe. I liked all of The Good Place I saw which was up to the last of season 3. I just kinda watched the whole 3 seasons in a row before I knew it. I've not rewatched any episodes and am in no hurry for the last season but I'm looking forward to seeing those characters again.

I was exclusively on Pluto for so long that Netflix seems fresh again. Just got done watching the robot fighter movie with hugh whatshisname. Wolverine. It was good! Oh wait I'm not done with it yet... OK it's good up to the point I was watching it. But I'm kinda still hooked on Pluto randomness. The newness of the video game channels is wearing off but I think they are a great idea and highly support them.

As far as video that I will look for specifically for games.. The only video I now, or ever, have specifically looked up to watch for a walkthrough... has been for Neverwinter. I'm not kidding when I say it's like a requirement with more than a few people that I have met in random epic dungeon queues. The hell queues. Sometimes. And if you just ask what to do I have gotten answers like 'man you haven't even watched any vidoes!'. so fine, i've succumbed. It's really great and all that people take the time to make such great videos (Northside, Reiner(sp?), and I'll admit to watching multiple The Assist Man videos..) but nothing beats a good hand holding in-game. I guess we're not supposed to hold hands these days right? So off to the youtubes I go. And then I get a Castle Ravenloft for example and still feel lost and it ends horribly with people ranting (that's not the horrible part it's just what generally comes next).

The IGN and GameSpot channels are purely for entertainment. New background noise sometimes and sometimes I actually sit down and watch it.

I like the idea of having ESPN (9) (11..) but for gamers. Channels that are devoted to all that is nerd gaming.

My new thing is still on Pluto when it comes to not using the TV for games.. and my new Pluto thing is The Price is Right channel.

I'm not sure if you have to be old enough to remember the original show to enjoy it.. For example, if I was a kid I bet I'd get a kick out of seeing them give away $2,000 VCRs and $600 microwaves (this is 1970's money we are talking about, too..) - you know, the cutting edge tech of the day. I'm waiting to see a $300 calculator. I'm not a kid anymore but I get my own kinda laughs. I did watch this show when I was a kid btw and I liked it then, too.

The host Bob Barker is an interesting person.. 2 people on the show from the audience already have said they live near where he went to college and and another lived where he used to live. One place was in the midwest and the other was on a native American res. He always spends a little time getting to know people (has this thing about trying to guess things about them sometimes..) and wants everyone to win. To me he comes off as likable and funny and not long on patience and he will pretty much call it like he sees it. Like if someone does something dumb he will pretty well point it out. "Everyone overbid. The lowest bid was $625.. what is your new bid?" "$650!" and then come the eye roles and sarcasm and if you don't spin that wheel all the way around he will literally get the audience to boo you. I think it's not a show, either - I think he gets genuinely annoyed and doesn't think twice about showing it.

They give away so much expensive .. crap. Cars you wouldn't even want to drive (and also some Trans Ams.. Jeeps..). Thousands in Snow Ski equipment (and the show is based in California?). Pianos.. (Pianos aren't crap of course.. but.. they are... PIANOS..) But a lot of it is pricey and they do give away a lot of it and everybody's always excited. So many different games.. and Bob knows them better than anybody running any casino. You can't hardly trip him up. And he has pretty girls and a funny announcer and they do the dumbest skits but it all fits somehow.

They have a whole channel for this. Nonstop Price is Right 24/7.. lol. It's my go-to channel for when I want to turn my brain off and just laugh and I do play along with them! I get it right just about as often as Bob - not very..

~~

Pluto is advertiser supported, this is on Pluto, and, Full Disclosure: they are currently having a volume problem on The Price is Right channel. Sometimes the ads are Loud, and then, you can't hear the show after, so, you have to play the change-the-volume game..  : / Forgot about that until I experienced it again just now. Normally Pluto's ads aren't very annoying. Until now I've just chalked this problem up to the channel being new.

The Price is Right

They give away so much expensive .. crap.

Like...

Pianos.. (Pianos aren't crap of course.. but.. they are... PIANOS..)

OK I have a brand new Queen of .... questionable and expensive prizes won by ordinary people (her husband was a stockboyMAN..).

I had to go back to the original black-and-white Price is Right (with Don Pardo (semi-famous announcer for SNL) announcing) for the winner who not only won herself a Grannnd Piano but also a Roman-style horse and Chariot complete with 8 and 5 year old horses........... She just missed getting a fully loaded luxury car when going over by 6 dollars when she guessed its price but still managed to be the biggest winner of crap expensive but questionable prizes of the day.

The often loud ads on the old timey gameshow channels has kinda turned me off of them but they can still be fun. Everyone is so excited..

I don't really have a new thing right now but I still use Pluto as a portal to the past. It's kinda like having rabbit ears again except there are more than 3-4 channels and I don't have to get up to change them. It's like TV has come full circle. I went away from TV long ago in favor of streaming and now my streaming is like before I left TV. No signing up for anything, no fees, just tune in for a lot of re-runs and ads. Just like the old days except I don't have a TV Guide and the reception is always good.
