HOWTO: XML feed in Excel 2007
« on: April 14, 2011, 03:03:32 PM »
Here is a small "how-to" on importing your CIT information into Excel 2007 on Windows 7.
Basics:  Get your feed information
  • Log into CIT
  • Hover over the "My Account" link at the top of the screen, then select the "My Data Feeds" option from the menu
  • On the page that pops up, you should see a section that says "Your private feeds" with your account name and two links to XML and JSON.
  • Copy the link to the XML feed (should begin with http://cit.cohtitan.com/xml/priv/ and have a bunch of random characters after it)

Excel
  • Open Excel 2007 and a your workbook (new or existing)
  • Click "Data" on the ribbon/menubar
  • Click "From Web" in the Data Menubar
  • In the address field for the window that just popped up, put in the XML address from your data feed.  Click "Go", then "Import"
  • Click "OK" on the box that refers to the document not having a schema.
  • Select the location to import the file as a data source.
  • Save the workbook.

You now have an export of most of the basic character data stored in your account by CIT.  You can color and format this however you want.  You can also hide some of the columns that are less useful in this context (bios, user_id number, etc).

This data source doesn't automatically update for you.  To do that, go to the Data section of the ribbon and click the "Refresh All" icon.
