A Guide for those of us playing Campions Online.
« on: December 02, 2012, 08:44:15 PM »
With many of us now pplaying Champions Online until we get City of Heroes/Villains back or we create our own suitable replacement I thought that it would be helpful to provide a guide to some of the features, game mechanics and character advancement options for those of us who are not yet familiar with them.

(A quick piece of advice about gameplay. Champions online tends to be a bit more frantic then what we are used to in City of Heroes and missions known as Alerts (Which appear beside your city map) have a time limit so most players tend to be rush in all action no chat during these Alerts, much like in a console game. If you want the type of interacting with other players that was common in CoH then it's worth teaming up with fellow CoH players in game and doing standard missions or doing the repeatable story arcs known as comic series and adventure packs which can be continued at a later time so allow more time for chat, RP and strategy. We are a more mature gaming community and sometimes younger gamers don't yet understand the things we have come to value in our gaming experiences. Some will learn from our example and others will have no time or interest in it but it is something we can always share and enjoy with each other and that's something we will never loose. There are many CoH players that have come to Champions Online so there is a warm welcome and good gaming companions there to meet you. So from all of us already here, "Welcome to Champions Online")

Chapter 1: Character creation & progression.

Newbie Guide (Game Mechanics)
http://www.champions-online-wiki.com/wiki/Newbie_Guide_%28Game_Mechanics%29

(for those of you who take character design very seriously feel free to test out the information I mention here on the PowerHouse webpage to see how it all fits together and plan out your character builds).

Level progression table: http://www.champions-online-wiki.com/wiki/Level_Progression
(I explain everything about character creation and progression in this post so check below for details of what you want to find out about).

Free 2 Play (Silver Member) players will be limited to using CO's Archetypes at character creation. These are generic superhero builds with 12 predetermined powers (excluding travel powers) that are earned at certain character levels with 2 or in some cases 3 alternate options for certain powers along the way. Full list of CO's Archetypes at link below.
http://www.champions-online-wiki.com/wiki/Archetype

For 5000 ZEN (What Co uses instead of Paragon Points) a silver member can purchase a Freeform character slot (as an additional charater slot to the ones they already have) that can be used to create freeform characters just like Gold Members can minus the power colour selection and none character creation/progression benefits of Gold Membership

Paid membership (Gold Member) players have the additional option of creating a Freeform character which can have a total of 14 powers (excluding trave powers) that the player selects themselves within certain requirements. Gold Members can also change the colour of their powers (All powers chosen will be set to the colour selected).
Full list of all Champions Online Power Sets in link below.
http://www.champions-online-wiki.com/wiki/Power_Sets

1: They must have 1 energy builder attack. (a rapid weak attack that generates energy [CO's version of CoH's Endurance])
Full list of Energy Builder powers in link below.
http://www.champions-online-wiki.com/wiki/Energy_Builder

2: Can only have 1 Energy Unlock power, but is not required to have one. (An automatic power that is always on and generates energy under certain circumstances [Max 1 per character). Full list of Energy Unlock powers in link below.
http://www.champions-online-wiki.com/wiki/Energy_Unlock

3: they must meet the requirements for selecting powers from the various tiers in the power sets. See link below for details.
http://www.champions-online-wiki.com/wiki/Powers

Aside from these requirements there are 3 other types of powers that a character can have no more then 1 of active at a time and I highly recomend that anyone creating a Freeform Character take 1 of each (according to what best fits what you're looking for) These are as follows.

Slotted Passives: These are automatic always on (no energy cost to use) powers that provide 1 or more buffs to your character. You can only have 1 of these powers put into a role slot (making it active) at a time but it is actually possible to have more then 1 of these powers chosen for your character and switch between which 1 you have slotted. (I'll talk about roles once I'm finished with powers) Full list of Slotted Passive powers in link below.
http://www.champions-online-wiki.com/wiki/Slotted_Passive

Forms: These are toggle powers that provide stacks of buffs and increase the amount of stacks of that buff you have under certain conditions. The exception is Inertial Dampening Field which creates a 50 foot radius field (which I think is invisible) which effect you and nearby teammates reducing the strength of incoming attacks by a percentage. Full list of Form powers in the link below.
http://www.champions-online-wiki.com/wiki/Form

Block Replace powers: These powers replace your characters block ability (hold shift key to use) with a more powerful variation of it (no energy cost to use and generates energy when hit depending on your role). I don't think a character can take more then 1 of these powers. Full list of Block Replace powers in link below.
http://www.champions-online-wiki.com/wiki/Block

Travel Powers As your character progresses they will gain a total of 2 travel powers. The first at level 6 and the second at level 35. You are free to choose any travel power from those you have available/unlocked with base travel powers always available to everyone. Full list of travel powers in link below.
http://www.champions-online-wiki.com/wiki/Travel_Power

Important note for appearance
Acrobatics looks like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=We3FNhTwEak
Athletics looks like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9cQhx5B5po

All powers (Except for Energy Unlock powers) have what are called ranks & advantages which are inprovements and upgrades to a power that players can learn.  These are obtained using Advantage Points with no more then 5 advantage points possible to spend on any power and you gain advantage points as you gain levels with 36 being the max at level 40 (games current maximum level).

Roles: There are currently 5 roles that a player character can choose to have and each modifies your character in some way. Archetypes all have pre-selected roles and cant change them. Your role also determins which Slotted Passive powers you can have active. Full list of roles in link below.
http://www.champions-online-wiki.com/wiki/Roles

Stats: There are 8 stats (charactistics) your character has. Each of these improve what your character is capable of by greater amounts the higher they get. Freeform characters can choose an innate characteristic that gives a small bonus to a combination of stats and can choose 1 as a primary and 2 as secondary superstats which which give large bonuses (much more of a bonus to the primary superstat) to these stats that scale with your character level. As your character progresses you will be able to select Talants (maxium of 6 ) that give further small bonuses to your stats with the amount and combination depending on the talant chosen. Archetypes have their Innate Characteristics and superstats pre-chosen but are free to choose whatever Talants they want.

Full list of stats: http://www.champions-online-wiki.com/wiki/Characteristics
Full list of Innate characteristics: http://www.champions-online-wiki.com/wiki/Innate_Characteristics
Full list of Talants: http://www.champions-online-wiki.com/wiki/Talents

Specialization Trees
Begining at level 10 your character will gain access to Specialization Trees, which are a means of further enhancing your character. You will gain access to a total of 3 Specialization trees, the first (which always corisponds to your primary superstat) at level 10, the second at level 20 and the third at level 30. Each specialization tree has a master specialization that becomes available at level 40 (as far as i can tell players can only choose 1 mastery total that is chosen from the masteries of the 3 specialization trees they have. Freeform characters can choose their own second and third specialzation trees but Archetypes have all their specialzations pre-chosen. Starting at level 10 you begin gaining specialzation points (1 per level max 31 at level 40) to use to gain and improve specializations within your specialization trees. Each specialization tree has 8 specializations (4 tier 1 and 4 tier 2) and you must spend at least 5 specialization points on tier 1 specializations in a tree before you can access the tier 2 specializations, whith 10 being the most specialization points you can spend in any specialization tree (the final point at level 40 is for choosing your specialization mastery).

Full list of Specialization trees here http://www.champions-online-wiki.com/wiki/Specialization_Tree

So that's everything on character creation and development. Hope some of you found it helpful. I will detail other features of the game in future post on this thread.

I'm considering CO, but I have two questions.

First, I will not have the chance to become a gold member, or purchase any items from their cash shop immediately.  As a free player, is the game still fun to play?  Can I remain useful and competitive with paid-for members, even if I lack a lot of customization options?  Or are the free-user archetypes horribly gimped beyond all reason?

Second, will the game run passably on a low-end machine that cannot run CoH on ultra-mode graphics?  My computer is almost as old as CoH is, and hasn't recieved much in the line of upgrades due to financial situations.  Will Champions Online still run playably?  Or should I not bother?

For the sake of the community: please stop the cultural "research" in your attempt to put blame on the game's cancelation.

It's sickening to see the community sink that low. It's worse to see the community does not get it.

I'm signing off and taking a break, blindly hope things change.

Oh also: I can run the game at highest quality setting albeit a bit choppy (one step under it and i can run it nicely, but I feel the eye candy is very worth the lower framerate for me.)

My computer was not able to run Ultra mode too smoothly.

Again: no purchase needed so give it a try and see if it runs on your system.

Okay, apparently I got a little problem with account creation and recovery.   Long while back, before Champions Online was created, I'd registered an account for Perfect World.  Now, that account hasn't been used in literally years, but apparently it's still in their database.

Thing is, I can't seem to recover it - I've requested the username and password, but no e-mails have been showing up.  I'm thinking I might've accidentally set the mail to be blocked.

So, I need someone to help me out here.  Can someone tell me from what e-mail address the name & password resets come from?  That way I can look up the address in my blocked senders list, and remove it.

Did you check your junk mail/spam box? Maybe an old email account?

Yes I have, those were the first things that came to mind in fact.  This is why I'm wondering what e-mail address Perfect World sends its account recovery messages from, because I think I might have blocked it entirely, rather than just forcing it to be filtered to junk.

If worse comes to worse, I'll just use a different e-mail address and register a new account, but I'd like to avoid doing so if I don't have to.

Chapter 2: Chat, Emotes & Social.

Link to chapter 1: Character creation & Progression http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index.php/topic,6623.msg82207.html#msg82207
Link to Chapter 3: Costumes http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index.php/topic,6623.msg84071.html#msg84071

A quick few things before I start into this part. I'm going to be using screenshots from Champions Online to help explain how to access and use some of the features and In light of that I had best say some things about the character I'm playing. Firstly he is not the clone you would assume he is at first seeing him. I have made numerous and intentional differences in appearence so that he looks like the original but fairly different too and his character description explains what he's about. He is my tribute/memorial to CoH and Paragon Studios and also represents a statement that we are not going away, we will pervsevere and go on. City of Heroes meant a lot to all of us and that can never be taken away from us.

So without further delay (and hopefully without a lot of critism to come) may I introduce Paragon.
http://twitpic.com/bitp4g/full ( I made the pic bigger but for some reason it wont display the actual size )
Whenever any CoH players sees my character in game you will know right away that I'm a fellow CoH player and I'll be a friendly (and familiar lol) face who will trying to help you out playing or learning the game as much as I can.

Players can create and join custom chat channel (max of 5 per player) and there is one that was created especially for those of us from CoH called CoX. To join it simply type /channel_join CoX in your chat bar or simply right click on the Chat tab above your chat window to open the chat customization window for that tab, select the Channels tab and type CoX in the join/create section and click join. Screenshot of this here http://twitpic.com/bitr29/full

Finally before getting back to the guide I am starting a list here of supergroups in Champions Online that are created by and/or are taking in CoH players so that we all might have an easier time finding each other and teaming up in game and hopefully help long time friends back together in game. Supergroups in Champions Online can have up to 500 members but currently supergroup bases are not yet a feature in Champions Online. (I will add more supergroups to this list as I become aware of them).

The Shards of Virtue (has many CoH players including me  :) )
Web site: http://shardsofvirtue.guildportal.com/Guild.aspx?GuildID=462034&TabID=3983515

The chat window
Located on the bottom left of the screen. If you right click on a players handle in the chat window it will bring up a menu of interaction you can choose from that will be sent to that character such as private messages and various invites. Screenshot here: http://twitpic.com/bitvpx/full

On the far left is a blue button with a white triangle in it. left clicking on this brings up the selection of chat channels you can choose to chat on. Local & Zone are standard to Champions Online, Supergroup Channel if you are a member of one and any custom chat channels you have joined. Things said in the Supergroup channel and Custom channels will only appear in the chat windows of others who have join these channels (with the Supergroup channel only displaying to other members of the Supergroup that you are a member of). Screenshot here: http://twitpic.com/bity07/full

To the right of your chat bar is a blue button with a text bubble in it. Left clicking on this button will bring up a menu that includes emotes and voice chat controls as well as some links to windows that display your friends and fellow Supergroup members. Screenshot here: http://twitpic.com/biu29h/full

Further information on emotes with a complete list of available emotes can be found here: http://www.champions-online-wiki.com/wiki/Emotes

As i said earlier if you right click on one of the tabs above your chat window it will bring up a window that allows you to change the features of that tab andwhat is displayed in the chat window when that tab is active/selected. Screenshot here: http://twitpic.com/biu4yl/full

I hope that this has been helpful to everyone for learning what they want to about chat, emotes and social interaction. If anyone has any comments or advice about this guide feel free to send me a Private message on this forum and I will try to work on any suggestions given to help improve this guide.

Coming soon.

@JRVthatsME, is there a way to get auras like we were able to in CoH? I mean purely cosmethic costume piece stuff like glowing eyes or fiery head?

@ Starsman. Not just yet but they will become available in a future update. I have seen in video clips of the test server 2 extra slots added to the inventory window that will be for equiping aura items once they are added to the game.

There are some options available currently. The three secondary equipment items available from the nemesis vendor will give your eyes a glow effect (like a firery aura I think) if all three are worn with the colour depending on which eyeware you choose from the set. Firery, bright, dark.

During the blood moon even it is possible to get as a drop a device that when turned on surrounds your character with a dark aura http://www.champions-online-wiki.com/wiki/Dark_Aura

The of Edom costume pieces from the Aftershock comic series each give a kind of glowing dark pinkish mist aura effect to a specific part of you characters body. http://www.champions-online-wiki.com/wiki/Aftershock_Costume_Pieces just like the avatars of the Kings of Edom http://www.champions-online-wiki.com/wiki/File:The_Heart_in_Man%27s_Dementia.png

I'd like to point out that you can earn zen without paying by taking surveys or signing up for offers. (its kind of like those get paid to take survey sites)

That system is  frustrating and kind of scammy.

In my experience as you can pick up a survey and be told you were ineligible for the zen reward upon completion. This seems to happen a lot on the surveys offering a larger amount of zen.

For the offers, sometimes they require you to submit payment information at which point, you're better off buying $5 in zen instead of earning $5 worth by purchasing a $30 1-year subscription to Tea Towels Monthly. If I'm not dropping money for the zen what makes you think I'll drop money for a subscription to a magazine I won't even read?

For PvE,  CO is very playable with the "Silver" Archetypes, so you can play to your heart's content.  However, do not be fooled by anyone trying to draw you into a PvP versus their Freeform character.  Unless they gimped themselves, there is no comparison, powerwise.  On the flip side of that, should you ever decide to subscribe, your AT character can be completely respecced into Freeform, (even keeping the theme and basic powers if you like, but adding outside powers as you like to round out their weaknesses or play to strengths).

ATs are set up to synchretize ability scores & Talents with the powers they best enhance, so they are fairly balanced.
Freeform can be fun to play, but is really a game-breaker as far as power balancing, and require some research to get powers/Talents/Ability Scores in synch.

Guess I'll be going back in there too & looking for fellow refugees  - @0nehanklap is me moniker.

A very useful guide. Many thanks.

Can I ask what was hinted at above: Do free players have limited costume options? I see there are a few options you can buy, and some you can earn in-game, but I'm having difficulty seeing what's available.

Just wondering whether stumping up for a monthly sub is worth it.

Chapter 3: Costumes

Link to chapter 1: Character creation & Progression http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index.php/topic,6623.msg82207.html#msg82207
Link to Chapter 2: Chat, Emotes & Social http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index.php/topic,6623.msg83375.html#msg83375

The costume pieces selection is handled much like it was in CoH with a fairly good selection available for free and costume sets "a collection of themed costume pieces" (such as this) http://championsonline.wikia.com/wiki/Golden_Age_Costume_Set that can be purcgased from the C-Store for ZEN (like Paragon Points).

There are several means of getting extra costume pieces (but some are still ZEN only) for free in game.

These costume piecces can be obtained by achieving perks in game (perks are like accolades without a power boost)
http://www.champions-online-wiki.com/wiki/Perk_Reward_Costume_Pieces

There are 4 types of tokens (counted as a type of currency) in game that are earned for completing some missions and occasionally droped by enemies call recognition. These can be used to buy items, equipment and costume pieces from the recognition stores in the rec center or Millennium City.
http://www.champions-online-wiki.com/wiki/Recognition

Another form of currency that is earned in game through completing Adventure Packs and Comic Series is Questionite.
Adventure packs: http://www.champions-online-wiki.com/wiki/Adventure_Pack
Comic Series: http://www.champions-online-wiki.com/wiki/Comic_Series
You can do each of these stories up to 4 times a day and each time you finish you get a reward of 2000 questionite ore and every day you can refine a maximum of 8000 questionite to make it usable as a currency. To do this open your inventory (by pressing i on your keyboard or left clicking the little yellow utility belt at the bottom right of your screen, then click the currencies tab to view your total currenies and there will be a button to refine questionite there. The Zen store and the Questionite store are accessable through buttons at the bottom of your city map at the top right of your screen. The questionite store also has the the Questionite Exchange where players trade Questionite for ZEN with each other and vice versa so good way to get free ZEN
Questionite Store: http://www.champions-online-wiki.com/wiki/Questionite_Store
Some boses in game might drop a small amount of quetionite ore when defeated (about 100 - 400) and some of the boses in the comic series and adventure packs have a random chance of droping specific costume pieces.

Lastly there's the Snake Gultch (robot cowboys gone wrong) themepark at the desert in which defeated robot cowboys sometimes drop snakebuck (counts a a currency) that can be traded with Bargain Bill in Belle Steel's saloon for a few things including some costume pieces.
Snake Gultch Store: http://www.champions-online-wiki.com/wiki/Snake_Gulch_Store

When you first recieve a costume item (and always when you recieve Questionite) it may be given as a consumable item in your inventory which you have to double click to give yourself access to that costume piece when you go to a tailors (and to give yourself the Questionite ore in your currencies). When any of these costume pieces are unlocked (by whatever means you obtained them) they become permanently available to every character on your account. (there might be some specific exceptions to this but I don't think so).

Before PWE took over, the silver forum was on another site.  Here is the link for Silver guides: http://champions-online.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=gameguides&action=display&thread=362.

Mine is the silver survival notes.  Some crafting parts need updating.
