Our Other Options
« on: December 03, 2012, 03:33:27 AM »
OK I can see this is gonna get ridiculous so lets just consolidate ALL "our other options" ideas into one thread. This is ideas for people and companies to send letters too ONLY if Disney does not work out. Also to cut down on the massive amounts of threads that will be made and making us look less professional if our site is visited by one of these people in question.

So here we have the ideas for

Game Companies
Bio Ware
Valve? - Rumor has it that they are gonna merge with NCSOFT and another company but I doubt its true at all.
Bethesda

Celebs:
Oprah
Ellen Degeneres
Steven Colbert
Matt Smith - Rumor has it that he is  comic book fan
David Tennent - Same as matt.
Kevin Smith,
Felicia Day,
Wil Wheaton,
David Cross

Uh, it's Ellen Degeneres....

Stephen Colbert we possibly have a ghost of a chance of getting the attention of.  Oprah and Ellen?  Not unless I manage to solo-fly a lawnchair tied to a bunch of balloons across the US.

MATT SMITH AND DAVID TENNENT!

The 10th and 11th Doctors from DR. Who! They are suppose to be GIANT Comic Book Nerds! I bet they would back this up! Plus they are Nerd Super Stars!

Matt Smith and David Tenant because they're comic book nerds?

Why not Kevin Smith, Felicia Day, Wil Wheaton, and David Cross while we're at it?  All four of those folks are comic book fans and gamers.  (Actually, Kevin Smith might not be a gamer, I don't precisely remember.)

(This is meant tongue-in-cheek, by the way.  Like, I know Felicia Day plays WoW, and kinda runs a show which depends on WoW's existence.  She might sympathize with us, but I don't think it's in her interests to throw her lot in with ours.  That's the basic point I'm making, here.)
Aram:  "Man, just look at all this.  Sometimes it's hard to believe that we get to live surrounded by such wonder."
Gamal:  "We don't live over there." Aram:  "We don't?"
Gamal:  "No.  We live over there." Aram:  "... But it's all on fire."
Gamal:  "Yes it is, Aram.  Yes it is."

If it got some notice and got CoH saved?  I'd not only send VV across the US in a cobbled-together vehicle using helium balloons and a lawnchair, I'd play flight-attendant the entire trip, sew a pair of NASCAR-style jumpsuits by hand.... and bake a cheesecake from scratch.

Well I suppose that if you held my beer things would likely get cobbled together a little more quickly... with bailing wire, duct-tape and colorful language. ;)

Lets start something on the Kickstarter Web site the raise fundraiser money to help with the movement of getting ourselves noticed in the big wigs worlds like Disney and stuff. We can use it for a Campaign and fund professional advertisement for our cause!

Just another way of saying, "Dial 9 and 1!"  My brother had reconstructive foot surgery to testify to that >.>

Anyway, I understand our (fairly lofty) targets here.  But what exactly should we be doing?  Letter-writing, Tweeting?

That's funny because the current MOTD on the PinnBadges IRC channel is "HOLD MY BEER AND WATCH THIS!"

Without looking for verifying data, I'm fairly certain that Felicia Day not only knows about this but mentioned it on one of her "Geek & Sundry" youtube videos.  I'm also fairly certain I sent Ms. Day a fannish plea for her assistance contacting her via youtube shortly after 8/31.  (Not saying if true she did it because I wrote her, but IIRC she was entirely sympathetic to our cause.)  Unless others have reasonable objections, I see no reason why we should not write all of these fine people to see if any are in a position and able to assist.  If numbers will tip the scales in letter writing, why not try?

Here's an idea:  If Ms. Lackey would be interested, and if Wil Wheaton would permit, perhaps V.V. could go on TableTop, play a fun board game and ideally Wil might let her pitch on the show, perhaps even adding to it himself.   My $0.02 won't even cover the cost of tax on that overpriced latte, solely for what it's worth.

Howdy. Long time CoX player, new to Titan Network. Started lurking around the time NcSoft announced they were going to bend us over the table.

I'm not sure if this has been suggested, but why not reach out to dorkly.com?

If this has, my apologies. Just trying to help.

Please contact dorkly with the letter writing campaign.

Guys, I appreciate deeply that you all think I am all that and a bag of chips, but I am not even a first-level guest at Dragoncon sort of fame.  I rate squarely in the midlist.  Will Wheaton would go "who?"  Don't concentrate on what my dubious notoriety can accomplish.  Concentrate on how we can get the most numbers.

Well, you are all that to me, but, I know better than to argue with your assessment.  Colbert Nation seems like the best, most likely place for numbers, barring getting Oprah interested (I think Divine Intervention would be required for Oprah).  But I think Felicia Day could be contacted, and if David Tennant et al are comic and/or gaming fans, I think they're worth contacting as well.  I gotta get back to my belated Thanking the Media posts.  I've really been negligent about doing so.  So guys, please hop on those articles and leave a Thank You!  (I'm sure I don't need to make a request for all comments we make to media covering us be positive and to avoid NCSoft bashing in public.)  In Public Relations it's all about Optics, and I'm sure you'd want us to look good to all those outside our community.

What if we contact the nerds from that big bang show lol. I am sure them with how much they are comic book nerds they would be willing to help lol

or we also need to contact IGN and Game Informer. While they did a short story about the game shutting down they mention nothing of us and what we are doing.

Getting the attention of those big wigs and having a story of us done by them is certainly to boost our notice in the media.

What about The Oatmeal? It's an online comic strip, and there has been a gamer reference before. Definitely not super hero comics, but funny (if you are OK with potty mouth and cynical humor which I totally am).

http://theoatmeal.com/comics/online_gaming

But he does get a ton of viewers. If someone wanted to contact him with some information to see if he'd be interested in spreading the word?

First, VV, I do not read fantasy, beyond occasionally dusting off my old copy of the original Pern trilogy, and I knew who you were, though not that you were with Baen.

Second, to address two previous points at once, I believe the TableTop games are by invitation, but, yes, lobbying them to get Posi on for a round of Settlers of Cataan, or something, sounds like an awesome idea.

Richard Garriott.

I'm going to make a new topic for the idea later, but here's some reasons:

- Has experience with MMOs and starting them (Made Ultima and Tabula Rasa)
- Subsequently sued NCsoft when they forged his resignation, ended his game and other sources of fraud
- Has a fair sum of money, as he was able to go after his space-flight dream through his own funds

If he did get CoH,
- He woudln't have to do a whole lot past invest venture capital (addendum: asked the director of his documentary about his future plans, says they're not video games, which is moreso a plus for us)
- He could do what Steve Jobs did with Pixar - toss maybe one million per year AKA venture capital
- With such, he could just leave Paragon Studios to do their bidding, rolling smoothly and so on
- It would be a nice message to NCsoft, grabbing what they just dropped and getting the gains they miss out on

he only sued NCsoft because they listed his depature from NCsoft as voluntary and not "fired/sacked/removed from position" whatever. It affected how his stock options could be executed. So he did try to go for them for fraud over *that*.

The letter and the termination of his game were *not* factors for him starting the law suit. Infact, the game was only ever mentioned as something incidental to the whole proceedings to be honest. Ok, maybe the letter *was* a factor (however, from what I can gather from the court case, it was that he approved and *signed* the letter to the players, but never signed his resignation letter. There is no mention in the court proceedings that the resignation was indeed forged, nor did he list it as such in his original court case documents.)

Eh, I may have been wrong with that!
Either way, he has an intimidation factor and could possibly have some additional personal factors with them.

Well, given that your line at Dragoncon this year was longer than Adam West's and the panels I went to, I'd say you're pretty high up there VV. And you may not remember signing my books but I still appreciated that I get inline before they closed it like they did last year.

I Tweeted wil Wheaton like 3 times about it and I think we should spam his Tweet with it as well until he responds lol.

Wil Wheaton paying attention and ESPECIALLY If he were to Tweet something about it or HEAVEN PRAISE US! Made a video about it like he does when he interviews board games!

It would add a +9001 to our power level and than even if we are in the negative we would STILL be over 9000!

Joke aside it would add Thousands of more Eyes on us!

So In addition to Project Hail Mary I shall now request that we invoke Project Bug Wil Wheaton until he says stop or helps us by flooding his Tweets and responding to his Tweets with our website domain and a small message of asking for help.

Nothing fancy or pathetic just a simple. "Please help us" or "Our city needs a hero like you" "Insert our Domain name for front page"

Not the forums domain but the main site front page.

Posted a bunch of times to IGN, Doctor Who's Matt Smiths bbc, Oprah walls for Twitter.
Gonna see if Game Informer has a Twitter wall and post a bunch of times to it too!

I would imagine that his life is very like that of a big lottery winner since he won his lawsuit.  Everyone wants him to throw money at their pet project.  He never had anything to do with CoH, I'm not sure he cares about comics or superheros, and he has his own business to re-invest in.

Funnily enough, we don't actually know what work he did on CoH but he is listed as Executive Producer/Executive Management. I wonder what it was, just out of curiosity

Yeah, the director said he was mainly doing his space business nowadays. It was neat seeing Ghost Widow in the documentary though

Do not do this.  He recently(within the last month or so?) tweeted about being annoyed at people constantly spamming him with their causes. He said he would block them. So yeah, prolly not a good idea to bug him.

Correct.

Spamming anyone will not get someone to reply and if they do it usually wont be in a nice manner about how they can help you out.

Just imagine if someone was constantly spamming you. I doubt most people would just up and go and say, "oh since they are spamming me to my last nerve I'm going to go ahead and help them out." Usually it's more like, "Who are these people spamming me?  I'm putting them on my block list right now."

This is just courtesy tip for contacting anyone. Contact them once, maybe twice at the ultimate most, and let them decide to reply or not. Do not become an iGnat.

It worked with the Entertainment Weekly guy because his job is to receive spam from people. Bugging celebs on their personal twitters will not be received as well. A few people tweeting them once with a "Hey have you heard about this?" is okay, but that has been done with @wilw already.

This might be a dangerous thing to say, since the ranks, here, have swelled a bit since then, but it might be acceptable if a few of us point him to the press release with some variation of, "Hey, look what us nutty, spandex-themed gamers are up to, now! Aren't we cute."  More self deprecating and less condescending, though. I didn't mean for it to be that bad.

Anyway, if, say, someone high up in Project Phoenix were to pick one of the small to medium sized teams (I'm arbitrarily going by the lists on the OP for the ASSEMBLE THE TEAM thread) and said, "You! Tweet!"  That would not be spamming, but it might be enough volume to get noticed.
I wouldn't use the word "replace," but there's no word for "take over for you and make everything better almost immediately," so we just say "replace."

Much as I know... people are going to hate me for saying this, but...

Microsoft Games.

Now before the whole world goes screaming "OH NOES!!!!?"

We should maybe look at the following:
1) City of Heroes was at one point ready for the Xbox.  The devs actually had working code for it and were ready to pull the trigger before Microsoft pulled out in large part, if reports are correct, due to concerns at the time the Xbox players would get owned by PC players (a limitation which, in many ways no longer exists due to hardware and network improvements).
2) Microsoft and Marvel were working on a Marvel MMO - when Marvel / Microsoft pulled out of the deal (which is why there's a Champions Online), the problem at that time was that between Marvel, Microsoft and Cryptic - there weren't enough pieces of the pie to make it profitable.  Here they'd be splitting it with Paragon, that's a workable solution for them.
3) Microsoft has tried repeatedly to get a decent property in the MMO Market and failed repeatedly.

Now, that's not a lot confidence I know.  But understand that Microsoft very much wants an MMO for the Xbox, they have all along.  Here's one which actually has most of the code in place for them.  All they need to do is update it to work with the current level of technology, and connect it to their systems.   It's actually a very smart move on their part - it's family friendly, it's an MMO, it's a potential income generator and it gets them very good press with the gaming community.  Microsoft loves having good press.

Microsoft needs something for the PC in this space.

Microsoft has a history of letting game studios do what they do best - giving Paragon Studios the cash and resources to rebuild how they want to achieve a great product isn't a problem for them.  If you're familiar with Bungie and several of their other 'partners' they've usually been pretty good with them.

At one point they were so keen on City of Heroes they actually put Statesman and others on their "Microsofts Got Game" T-Shirts.  I know a lot of people don't like Microsoft, even more so than Disney... but if you're we're tossing ideas out there, I really feel this is less of a long shot than even the Disney pitch.

Financially it's a risk for them, they generally don't go in for things this small, but it's small enough they might be able to take it and if it fails not worry, and let Paragon spin off to whatever they want. They've done it before with other companies.

Dont also forget that they were also responsible for the *very* bad version of Shadowrun on the PC/Xbox 360 cross over... and whilst they do tend to let developers do their own thing, they are also *totally* fine shutting down game studio's at a moments notice (FASA Interactive for example. Microsoft *owned* that development studio, closed it down, and it was only after a *lot* of legal wrangling that the IP's were sold on.... Look at the chain of events that had to happen for the creator of Shadowrun to be able to work on another Shadowrun title...)

Also, while the original Halo did come out for the PC, after Microsoft bought Bungie, all the subsequent Halo releases were Xbox-only. Is saving CoH worth the cost of it becoming an Xbox-only game?

I should preface by saying that I have philosophical issues with the XBox that go beyond my apathy for Microsoft, but:

Would that be so bad if it got us our game back?

LOL. This is in NO WAY Serious but a Joke idea

Joke idea - Please do not be offended
Does anyone know any sick dying children who are really REALLY Big fans of City of Heroes?
If so this is what we do! Gather up as much money as we can together as a group and Give him a last wish! Send him to Nasa and let the little kid float around in an Anti grav chamber or maybe build him a playground of his very own and dedicate it to him or whatever else feasible he/she wants!

Than we talk with him and get him and his parents to get in touch with the Last Wish Foundation and get the little kid to tell them he/she wants their game back because of how important it is and how much they like it well...because Like I asked above they gotta already REALLY like the game!
So they ask if the last wish guys can talk to Disney or Microsoft or....anybody if they can further help him convince them to buy the game....something like that becomes a Media SUPER FREAKEN NOVA! Suddenly Fox, CBS, BBC are doing stories on him. Fast Forward. He/she gets to play City of heroes again for as long as he/she has left AND we already funded whatever it was that they wanted. If need be start something up on that Kick starter web site I am sure we could get some people to donate and help us out! I would chip in something like $700.00 to help make it happpen!

We have COH, Helped a dying child get their final wish AND get to play a video game again they once really enjoyed.

Everybody freakin wins....as long as no one finds out!

Not sure of they have all been considered and ruled out or not, but wasn't there a bit of a list of celebs that had done AE stories?  Have they all been contacted for potential?  If they were willing to donate their creativity to NCSoft, which is my understanding of what writing AE stories was, then they might well be willing to donate some time or effort or something on CoHs behalf.

Whatever happened to the COH story line stuff that the guys are Rooster Teeth used to do?  Wasn't one of them a CoH Player as I recall?

RVB might be a good group to reach out to for at least some support.

Another - and I know they did a comic for CoH - but we might want to hit them back up because they didn't really go into much depth due to a number of issues at the time is www.penny-arcade.com

Gabe & Tycho have much pull in the gaming world.

We should also reach out to Warren Ellis, Neil Gaiman, Joss Whedon for support from their fan bases perhaps??

Possibly just some encouragement of our solidarity against the forces of evil?

Anyone thought about talking the producers for Comic Book Men? it's a show on AMC, never watched it, just saw the commercials during The Walking Dead.

I know the show is done until Feb, but they might would make a mention, if there are still negotiations going on or something. They might would put something on their web videos about it now.

Hey Guys? If Disney turns us down.

What About Nintendo?

Think about it? They are #1 innovators of the Gaming world. No one on Freaking earth has EVER dominated Nintendo when it comes to what they do best.
Even the GOD that is known as Sony failed at defeating Nintendo in the handheld market...God LULZ...I mean I bet if Mircosoft used its money to fund Apples Innovative new ideas and Sony made the hardware for it they STILL could not become the equal to Nintendo's market in handheld gaming lol.

Anyway, They are also the most beloved Gaming giant of the world AND get this! (Warning incoming Obvious statement)

They have NEVER had a successful MMO RPG like Cox.

Now you could ask well...but they have only done console gaming. Computer games are something they do not do and will only do stuff on consoles and their own system.

That is true but I bet with a convincing enough arguement we could persuade them to at least "think about it" and to think about it is to open a possibility!

Just a thought....plus They could integrate Wii U with it as well! So it could connect the PC AND the Wii controls with the Wii U as well to serve both parties!

Sorry to take you illusion, but there is a reason why Nintendo has not.much to do with PC stuff. As far as I know they failed hardly in the 90's to aquire their share on the pc market. It was a try as far as I know. At this time they nearly owned the console market (times when sega was successful).

So it's doubtful.that they want to take the risk (as far as I know the Wii U sales are als not the best).

If you think about console Organizations I would first consider Square-Enix.
They know about the MMO business, pc and consoles. I just sense one problem. I was part of the Final Fantasy 14 closed beta....and they nearly left the community itself just alone. With all the problems they might have during the CB. This is not the way someone should work with his fanbase. At least in my opinion.

EVERY option is on the long list.

Right now, we are contemplating the short list.

The problem we deal with is that Disney is large, and hence, moves slowly, and we think we are going to have to give them at least until after the New Year to ponder this.

HOWEVER--

That gives us all the more time to generate bags, boxes and barrels of mail.  Write, and write often.  This is not voting, where you can only do it once.

Okay, I'll write more letters.  It's easy for me to find reasons for recommending City of Heroes to Disney.

You know, you could start with the fact that there were no private/pirate servers.  We all played the "real" game without looking for a free option.

You know, you could start with the fact that there were no private/pirate servers.  We all played the "real" game without looking for a free option.

Was thinking I'd start regaling Disney with brief stories about the parents and kids who played and more about what made CoH popular with older adults.  One grandfather in one of the super groups easily spent more hours designing and costuming characters than he did in play.  (Really superb outfits many of them, and it clued me into the aspect of CoH that reminded me of those into model railroads, etc.)  Often late nights I'd log in to play solo and find he and his daughter chatting in Coalition.  (I'd say hi, of course.)  One friend came out to us one day as an Emergency Medical Technician by saying "I have to log now.  Cya tomorrow.  I've gotta go save people IRL."  The next day she clarified that statement for us.   ;)

Since demographic data has been requested on our ages, I've wondered whether other demographic data would be useful.  CoH players were diverse!  I had SGmates who were truck drivers, military personnel, lots of IT pro's, students (all ages), a medical doctor (hello to Diego in Colombia), one ABD grad student (hi PW), at least one police officer, 2 EMTs, countless un- and underemployed people including those too young to work.  Several of the kids grew up playing CoH; one planned to get his dormmates playing once he'd settled in at his first semester at college.

As far as I know, I am nearly the only one posting here from two very active SGs, and estimate I represent approximately 20-40 who'd resubscribe to City of Heroes, possibly more.  We're all keeping in touch thus far.   Even though you don't see them on Titan, many of them are mourning the loss of City of Heroes.  Many of them were very active with the initial efforts to Save CoH.  They all have the Disney/Team Wildcard info.

I was just wondering if Disney has even breathed on this yet. It is just all this waiting it wearing us down. We would like some decent news. Thanks off the soap box now!

No one would like to have news more than me.  But Disney moves as slowly as the glaciers.  First we have to get their attention.  Then they have to have their people eyeball the situation.  Then they'll have their financial people look at it and talk to the folks we left as contacts (Senior Paragon Studios people).  I don't expect any movement on this before the start of the New Year.

I am sobbing my eyes out on a regular basis, so believe me, you cannot possibly be more anxious about this than I am.
