You know, even when I saw that episode of Deep Space 9 it didn't work for me. Originally Q wasn't some harmless Mister Mxyzptlk type. I'm pretty darn sure that he killed one crewman on the Enterprise directly ... and he was the indirect result of several deaths when he sent the Enterprise to their first encounter with the Q ... which also makes him liable for every other death that's happened when the Borg showed up.

Q, as originally portrayed, would have vaporized Sisko for pulling something like that.
