What would you do if...?
« on: January 13, 2013, 12:17:36 AM »
I know it's just a hypothetical, but I've wondered about this. It's not completely impossible, but... yeah, it pretty much is. However, I'm curious as to what many of you would do in this situation. Let's say you wake up one morning and the buzz here on the forums is a short and sweet bit of news directly from NCSoft that goes something like this.

"Today, NCSoft announces that the ever-popular game, City of Heroes, and it's companion game, City of Villains, will again be online. We at NCSoft have heard the outcry of the fans and we have thought longer and harder about their concerns. We have decided that it is in the best interest of the community, and for everyone here at NCSoft, to pull together once again and reactivate the game. We will be doing our best to retain all previous members of the development team and bring the game and all of your characters back to their former glory with just as much emphasis, if not more, on new and continuing content. We have been working on this for a short while now and you can expect to have testing up within a few short months and the full live servers soon after. See you in the skies of Paragon. -NCSoft."

I'm just curious as to what people's takes are on this. I know many of you hold more than a bit of rancor for the company, but would something like this change your view on them? Would it make you give up on the game entirely? Would you just go back and play while still hating the company? Would you hail their name as the best gaming company ever?

Me? I would go back and play but I think I'd still look at them as I do now.  A company with their wallets in mind. If they made such a decision, it would be either to try to make more money on it, or to try to repair any bad image they have acquired for closing the game or anything else they have done in recent times.

I would be happy that the community have a home again, and would be happy for those that this game meant a lot to.

Me, I have nothing against NCSoft, yet still thing the decision was a bit not very bright, but I'd stay in CO. Dont get me wrong, COH is (was) a great game but CO fits me like a glove and that is where I belong now. But even still, COH is like an old  neighborhood I grew up in and didnt want to see get razed thus I will go back and see everyone one last time before going home.

Skepticism.

I'd jump back into the game the moment the servers reopened, naturally, but I'd try to find out - and encourage others - to dig and find out why they did it. It wouldn't be impossible that NCsoft had a change of heart - hell, that's what we're trying to make happen, though we're only left with he stick so far.

So, it depends. It was genuinely a conciliatory measure, then maybe that trust would gradually regrow. If not... well, then the fact that they'd close it down again would be a foregone conclusion, and I'd expect players to organize contingency measures for when that happens.

After I was done celebrating (which would take at least a week), I think I'd be willing to give NCsoft a chance to re-earn my trust.  I'd definitely be keeping a more critical eye on them, but if they realized that they made a mistake and tried to fix it, that's a step in the right direction.  I'd just be keeping a lookout to see if they made any more steps in said direction.  If not... well, at least the game would be back, for a while at least.

I've pondered this question a lot and I really don't know. If Paragon was still gone, I'd be less inclined to play. I also feel like it would only be a matter of time before they shut it down again. I may play f2p, but I'm kinda to the point where I don't want to play anything NCSoft. I probably wouldn't touch it with a ten foot poll. I miss my babies and my friends, though, so I'm just not sure ultimately what I would do. For now I'm very happy over at Cryptic and will likely be making Neverwinter my new home when it comes out, and would probably stay there if CoH was resurrected by NCSoft. If it was sold, I would probably split my time and money between the games.

Unless Paragon would run it, I probably wouldn't touch it. It most likely wouldn't be the same product after a while.

NCSoft basically lost my trust, and I'm still boycotting them as of yet by ignoring GW2, even though I'd like to try it again.

I don't think it would ever happen (I know you think the same, but I just had to say it anyway, haha), but...

I imagine that I'd have to play. I think, however, that I'd be a large part in a community movement to get NCSoft to sell the game and IP (hopefully to the Paragon Studios people they hopefully would have been able to round up).

I'd hope that, maybe, if there was a good showing and promise of a better future, we could have the game in the right hands.

Anyway... If that all happened... I'd also likely take my harem of never-aging Michelle Pfieffer, Ashely Judd, Dian Lane, Natasha Henstridge, my current wife and several other wonderful women... fly in my hovering house to the Angel Falls for a picnic before touring around the rings of Saturn for Valentine's Day.
What.

I'd play. In fact, I'd sub. I'd be more than a little distrustful, and CoH likely wouldn't be my main game any more...but I'd play. My irritation with NCSoft is not such that it would prevent me from listening to what would essentially be them saying "hey, we f*cked up...we're going to try to make it right."

NCSoft would have to grovel to the player base, to Paragon Studios, and would have to put in major concessions before I would trust them again.  Starting with attempting to reassemble the old team and giving them autonomy and a buyout provision in their contract.

I would re-sub the moment the news went live.  I was a loyal customer before the cancellation, and I could be reeled in again.  Back when I enjoyed NCSoft, I tried several of their other titles solely because of my love of Coh.  I am one of those who pre-ordered GW2.  However, since the shutdown, Aion and Lineage have been uninstalled, and GW2 sits on a lonely shelf.  Maybe they will figure out that brand loyalty has to be earned and not relied upon.

I would play and maybe enjoy it more because I know It will eventually vanish again.

It could be a profitable opportunity for them to go that route. It would be quite a media story to have the doors open once again. Get the publicity they never cared to invest in and possibly earn more new costumers.

I would play the game again, but I'd be very wary about putting any money into the game, given NCS's definition of "forever" as their F2P ads were bragging about.  I still think it was a very shady trick combining the money raised by the various games' cash shops into a lump sum, and then trying to use that as part of their tactic to persude people that CoH wasn't making NCS any money.

But then, I haven't put any money into any MMO since the announcement of CoH's sunset.  I know it can never be measured, but imagine the effects on all the other MMO providers' income since then.

I'd play.  In a heartbeat.  Even if we never got any more new content.  The game was a joy and the online community a delight.  Yah, I'd be wary as hell of NCSoft and wanting the protect the devs from further harm, but this was the home of one of our "other lives" and I'd go home in a skinny minute.

I would definitely play again and subscribe if NCSoft did that, but I'd also feel concern and worry that they'd pull the plug again.  I also don't expect them to have a change of heart or "realign" their corporate goals and priorities again.  Stupid, NCSoft pancake-heads!!!!!  Grrrrr!!!

I want my CoH back, so even though I hate to admit it, I'd accept it back even without Paragon Studios or further development of the game.  Likely that statement is sacrilege to many of you who consider yourselves more loyal to Paragon Studios than to the game itself, but after nearly 45 days after having the game access pried away from me (and after 7 years of subscribing with 3 accounts), I'd rather deal with NCSoft than with a login screen that doesn't go anywhere.  Please understand I'm at the point where Google has started to return 'really, dude?' as the result when I type in 'City of Heroes' in my search for the ten billionth time as I keep hoping for some/any kind of positive news.

I loved and respected all the work of the developers from the first moment I entered Paragon City, and yes, the promise of upcoming content (Battalion!; Moonbase!) was exciting.  But for me, the most important aspects were the world that had been created and the toons I added to it and nurtured over the years.  If it were up to me, I'd have kept the developers working and creating new content for many years to come, but barring having the expected return on their investment they expected (whatever the blue hell that was), I would have understood a decision by NCSoft to cease new development.  What I've never understood since August 31st though, is why close the game when you could continue to offer it with minimal staff/cost to cover maintenance?  Or even just subcontract it out.  Bottom line is: you're still making money with little further investment.  Some would say, 'yeah, but that decision kills the game and runs off the community', well, maybe so, but I'd rather have it killed slowly over the next 5 years than having it shot execution-style last November 30th.

Certainly, logic dictates that the age of the game would eventually make it difficult for CoH to compete with the latest, greatest games, especially knowing that the idea of developing CoH2 had just recently been turned down by NCSoft.  However, for me, CoH doesn't have any competition.  Some people just want a game to play.  Any game.  Preferably, the latest, greatest whatever with the shiniest, bestest graphics and gameplay ever.  Despite the hatred for NCSoft post 08/31, I know many folks went off to GW2, back to WoW, to try Secret World, or even STO.  Manga.  Fantasy.  Reality.  Science fiction.  It's all good.  Some people love the Superhero themed MMO.  So they checked out DCUO and CO.  For me, Paragon City is home.  I know that's a stubborn (some would say silly) attitude, but that's fine.  I'll vote with my cash -- you vote with yours.

So, unlike many CoH vets who downloaded other games on December 1st, I've patiently sat and waited for a miracle that will bring me back home (while wearing out Google along the way).  I'd subscribe to the end of 2022 if NCSoft would restore CoH.  If  they do, they can have my $15/mo x 3 accounts x 10 years = $5400.  Otherwise, I'm sure I'll find other things that will pique my interest when I'm not working....but CoH can never be replaced.

Hmm do I detect sarcasm in poking fun at the newer games here?

I've always considered the length of time CoH was out was actually a bonus, not a detriment.  (But trying to convince kids who think last year's shiney is a dull piece of trash is nearly impossible.)

Considering how many people are constantly screaming for content, CoH had it in spades, quite a bit of Developer-created content, and a very large amount created by users.  (Sure most of the user stuff was farming crud, but even 10% of the user-created content outmassed the official game content by a huge amount.)  As far as graphics textures go, some of the later releases are slicker, but I still hear people complaining about em on Champs Online all the time.

"Latest, greatest games"?  Don't make me laugh.. I haven't seen anything in the last 9 years that even compares with CoH. It was the greatest MMO game out there as far as I'm concerned.  I do wholeheartedly agree with you that CoH had no competition, and given the niche market, probably never will.

When we discovered that he was played by Sir Patrick Stewart, who is also now the new majority shareholder and acting CEO of NCSoft, I think we'd probably start playing again. After all, clearly some sort of radioactive awesome bug has bitten the universe to create such a change.

I am one of them - I have seen their idea of loyal and it doesn't match my idea.

If the game reopened, I'd be back on.  I have plans to enact, minions to bully, heroes to sneer at, and worlds to conquer!

That said, I wouldn't return without a hefty cinderblock of skepticism on my shoulder.  NCsoft would have to do a lot, and I do mean a lot to convince me that their change of opinion is sincere.  Still, I'd give them the opportunity to convince me, at least.

I'm mostly with VV on this - they'd have to make sincere efforts to put Paragon Studios back together and provide them with a buyout option in the contract, should a shutdown ever be announced in the future.  I would also insist upon plain and forthright communication as to why the change of heart occurred.  I don't have a lot of faith in humanity ('cept for you guys here at Titan; you're alright in my book), and before I'd deign to spend any money on the resurrected game, I'd have to know that my purchase would have lasting value.  I'd have to be convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt that the game hasn't just been reopened only to be shut down again a month or three later.

I am with VV and Kaiser  Tarantula on this one.

I would watch NCsoft very carefully and by  St Vidicon of the Cathode they had better make it right to us and the Devs.  I want them to have true buyout clauses for the studio, not the grief they put the Devs and us through. Contingency plans for a proper sunset with full release of the IP if a sunset needs to happen. Frankly I would trust the Prince of Lies to tell me a truth before I trusted NCsoft.

I'm in the I would play in a heartbeat if camp. If they at least try to expalin why this happened , if they reform Paragon with as many as they could reaquire,if they would allow a buyout claose. But they would have to prove themselves before I invest anythjing more than 2 subs in the game. Do I think any of this is likely- No.

I totally agree with you. I think it may turn their stigma as a company that couldn't care less for their players into a reputation for listening to the players and giving them what they want. Most people who know the name NCSoft as a company can relate to a company that craps on games and players for little to no reason in the public eye. They could do this and it would be good for them in every way. I keep praying that someone in NCSoft with power wakes up and realizes this.

Talk to old friends maybe?

I would just play the game.  I would know NCSoft was full of it,  I would know they are just doing it for face value, and I know they would just be waiting for a better time to shut it down.

But until then I would just play.  That is what is so great about CoH.  The ability to get on, and just play.

Because I really want to be wrong with that, but when I look into the past what happend to all the other games NC-Soft closed down, then I don't see much a chance here. Paragon Studios is no more most of the developers are in new jobs now and even when someone pick up the IP (Means that NC-Soft want to sell and they never do this with their other IPs they closed so far), they also need the developers for it. I really want to see a way and I'm corious what's going on in the future, but it's still a hard trip. Not impossible of course, but close to it...

...and: No, I have nothing else to do. All the other MMOs are just clones, always the same game just with other graphics. It's great that we have such people like Victoria/Mercedes, trying to save our beloved game, but I see much more a future into the Plan Z games. Maybe when NC-Soft really needs money and they have to sell something from their IPs to survive, then there is a way - maybe...

Microsoft has a love/hate relationship with PC gaming.  And since their bread and butter isn't, selling an IP back to a studio as you move out of game development is a no brainer.  Then again on occasion Microsoft will simply fold up an IP and hold it for a while until someone offers them enough money to license it like the Mechwarrior IP over a decade later.

I would play the game...but I would aggressively petition for a way to have an offline version of the game that could be played in the event of another shutdown. If that didn't happen, then I'd likely phase the game out. I'd want to see expansion #30 be, "Play CoX offline" or something.

To be clear, these forums aren't just for people who hope that City of Heroes is reactivated.  There are lots of reasons to be here, such as following news of the Plan Z projects, keep in touch with old friends, participate in efforts to get NCsoft to sell the IP to another company, check in on the status of reverse engineering, see if there are other things of interest going on, reminisce about the good ol' days, or just to bask in my wit and charm.  When I read Technerdoc's post, I don't see any "pool of negativity"; in fact, I'm inclined to agree with the assessment that NCsoft isn't going to turn the servers back on, and since they seem so hesitant to sell the IP, I don't see myself ever playing another NCsoft game.

City of Heroes has became a classic and as such has incredible sentimental value. Gaming classics are rarely forgotten and eventually they all resurface in one form or another, though it usually takes years. Personally I have absolutely no doubt that City of Heroes will come back. It may take a long time to get there, though. And it may not be an actively developed game anymore. But it will be back.

This is not going to happen. We will never hear a single word again from NC-Soft and City of Heroes, this chapter is finnished for them and for me it's too. I don't want to play anyone from their games again in my life...

This. And I'll add that I'll be gobsmacked if NCSoft has anything left but the IP. As an experienced corporate drone of good standing for over a decade now, I can't think of any good reason why they wouldn't have wiped/re-purposed the drives and tossed the documentation when they cleaned out Paragon's offices.

And this. Any interest I had in Wildstar is dead, I still have GW2 but I doubt I'll ever spend a penny there. I'm here to chat on Champions Online, City of Steam, and ArcheAge, and maybe seeing if I can impart some amateur wisdom towards Missing Worlds' project on their forum.

First, I'd wonder what drugs NCSoft was ingesting...then, check the calendar for April 1st..., then see if NCSoft was bought out, then see if the news was rumor or valid, and then wait a bit for news, reviews to settle out.  Finally, if it was the genuine article, I'd sign up.

But it ain't going to happen. I do sorely miss CoH/CoV and the community so I ghost through here to see what people are talking about and silently cheer those who have the know-how to talk to other companies or reverse engineer ...er stuff.

So, I wait...in the meantime, I've got ideas on razing the house because I've got all this time....

Cheers!

Two words:  Asheron's Call.  Never say never.

Well, that's a different kettle of fish altogether though.  Turbine self-publishes.  Asheron's Call 2 was their game.  They decided to bring it back.  There was no Psychotic Korean Overlord Who Owns the IP in the mix.

Sorry, not being negative, just honest.

Lots of other games have been rezzed, but none with the particular circumstances we've got.  Pirates of the Burning Sea just went indie, but they were with SOE, one of the more gracious of the NA publishers out there, who parted ways and let them sail off into the sunset peacefully.

Hellgate:  London was rezzed after a miserably buggy launch, but when its devs, Flagship Studios, went bankrupt, it was actually the bank they still owed millions to who seized that IP (as well as Mythos, the dungeon crawler Flagship was making) and hired a whole dev team to finish and re-release it (and Mythos).

A.P.B. was rezzed, but it was bought out after its original team went bankrupt; I'd venture to guess its assets were sold off to try and settle some of its original debts.

This is the fate that will befall the never-released Copernicus before long as well, as Rhode Island tries to recover some of that 75 million in debt that's been forced onto its residents.

I guess the thing we *really* should be hoping for is that NCSoft goes bust.  That's about the best shot we have to ever get the CoH IP sold. :P

Again with the negativity, I think someone will find the cash to offer NCSoft the right number.

I think so far $3 million is too low and that the Paragon deal wasn't enough money up front. I imagine they offered a deal like Cryptic for 50% profit - at $5 million a year NCSoft likely decided they want the cash now or forget it.

That is just my suppostion no inside knowledge.

I think that the only one who can be intressted is Cryptic to get their game back, they also have the developers there, but to bad: They have their own game now, Champions Online. So I don't think they will be intressted, even when they got the chance in any form like NC-Soft is bankrupt or anything like this.

They have to archive the code.  It's necessary for audits, for tax purposes, for accounting purposes, and for them to enforce their IP claims.

Failure to keep the code would mean that they would be powerless to stop someone from stealing their code.  Because in order to prove it was stolen, they have to be able to show where it was taken from.

To put it simply, I'd play it. I'd be cautious as others have stated, but I'd play. It's a bad analogy, but just because someone boarded up the doors and windows to my house for a few months and wouldn't let me in, doesn't mean I wouldn't reclaim my home when those restrictions were removed.

Here's a thought.

Instead of sitting on your thumbs and going "NONONONO NCSOFT WILL NEVER SELL," how about sitting down and trying to think of ways to incentivize them to sell?

That's what Team Wildcard has been doing, and we don't have particularly big brains.

Stop seeing things as a roadblock and start trying to see them merely as something to get over, around, or through.  Fancy managed to use the old-fashioned way of getting hold of an NCSoft company directory and climbing the phone/email tree at NCSoft until he found someone who would talk to him.  There is no reason why other people couldn't do the same.

Continuing to define realistic thoughts and conclusions as negativity isn't going to help.

Continuing to deny (even remote) possibilities simply because you don't personally see them as probabilities is also not going to help. The "negativity" expressed in this thread that is being referred to (which is technically veering off topic since it does nothing answer the question[a response is not an answer]) is the statements saying, essentially, "Ain't gonna happen." My question is, how can someone state something with such solidity and certainty? How do you know? Yes, we can guess what may happen, but we can never be sure. Whenever someone says something like "It can't happen" or "It won't happen," as V.V. alluded to before, a majority of the time people are proven wrong.

Look, people: The point of the question was simply to get an idea of how people would feel if NCSoft opened the game back up themselves. NOT to argue about whether or not they would or will. I understand that the likelihood is nil, but that's not the point.

...When I read Technerdoc's post, I don't see any "pool of negativity"...

Maybe if you don't understand what the term negative means.  Just because something is generaly a good guess or even 100% true, that doesn't mean it can't be a negative statement. Saying that something can't, won't, or doesn't happen is technically a negative statement. Furthermore, in a thread that states plainly "This is probably not going to happen, but what would you do if...", when someone comes along and just says "Nope, impossible," which is in contrast with the wants and desires of large majority of the people here, then you have another negative aspect of the comment. Can you show any ways in which it was a positive statement?

Look, some people are here to reminisce. Some are here to try to help with TF:HM. Some are here to keep and eye on plan Z(s). But it seems that there are a few here are nothing but naysayers. Okay, we all know the reality of the chance that the game may not ever come back as what we knew it to be. But most of us here are hopeful and don't need the darkest side of the stark reality shoved in our face every single post. We are a handful of people protesting huge corporation that's thousands of miles away. We are not idiots, just idealists. I mean, we played as superheroes for eight damn years for f@$k's sake. We know the difference between reality and fantasy. But it won't stop us from reaching for what we want. No matter how far it gets from us. Nothing is impossible. Whether it be NCSoft reopening the servers, Hail Mary, Plan Z, or anything else... if we give up on any aspect of the fight, we have just lost that part of it for sure.

Is it gonna happen exactly how we all want? Not likely. Will it happen at all if we start giving up? With all certainty, never. If you want to give up, that's your prerogative. Just stop recruiting.

I've hated NCsoft for ending CoX but if they brought it back, I would definitely play it.

I would also pay through the nose to have my old toons back again.

I would resume playing city of heroes immediately, even under the banner of NCsoft.

However, I would still feel that they don't have the interests of the player in mind, and I would no longer spend a dime even to access premium content, such as signature story arcs and the Incarnate system. It's too late to salvage that. I cannot invest in something with the knowledge that it could soon be taken away just as easily as before.
