I don't think I'd quite call allowing hybrids of the three roles avoiding the trinity. avoiding the trinity is a /ta troller superteam :P

Well anytime someone is durable you  can liken them to a tank, anytime healing is possible you can see that aspect of a healer, and anytime damage is possible you can call that dps.

The components of the trinity will always be there, it's whether or not you're locked into rigid roles which counts.

i tended to play Defenders, Corruptors, and Controllers with a variety of powersets. None of them did much healing on purpose (yes, Twilight Grasp has a fairly large heal as a side-effect, but that wasn't why i was usually using it, and the same thing for Howling Twilight's rez), instead focusing on buffing and/or debuffing with healing as the very occasional desperation move. By the standards of most Holy Trinity advocates that means they weren't really healers, so were they Tanks or DPS?

Edit: To be fair they did tend to do a fair bit of DPS when soloing and not focused on supporting teammates, as well as using aggro control to group mobs for AoE affection, so i guess they were hybrids solo and bad healers on teams?
So far so good. Onward and upward!

That reminds me of my time in RIFT back in the Storm Legion days.  My character did some DPS, yes, but his main focus was buffing and debuffing.  And I had so much fun doing that.  So would he have been DPS, since he did some damage?  No.  He was an Archon and an Archon was he.

Star Trek Online FYI avoids the trinity in a rather brilliant way. Any career can heal others, "tank" or dps, and in any possible permutation of the 3. They're all hybrids if you know how to build.

I don't think it avoids the trinity at all. It's flat-out stuck in the trinity, a great disappointment given that a radically different setting to the standard generic-fantasy world might have inspired some novel game mechanics.

Lol have you even played the game? no ones ever "looking for tank" or "looking for healer". Any career can do any combination of things. it's quite freeform and fun.

In STO if your build ends up looking like a tank then it's because you built a tank not because you're locked into being a tank. Or support, or dps. Most times I can't even tell you who is trying to play any of those roles in the teams I'm in - if anyone.

I pretty much always play my (1)Science/(2)Tac/(2)Engineer captains who are in Escort/Warbird/Cruiser/Sci ships pretty much the same way regardless of who's in my teams. I've never felt trinitied.

The ships probably dictate a trinity style setup more than anything.. And you can have more than one ship. Some ships are tanky, some have more power going to weapons, and only Science ships have secondary deflectors.

Currently, I probably play my Tac/Escort captain the most and you know in what role? TRADER.. If only I'd have made him a Ferengi. Would be SO fitting. He's my most developed and probably favorite build in combat, too.

STO is awesome if you're into space games and can get past the initial (learning of the 5 billion window interface) learning curve. It's not just about combat or holy trinitying. It's a classic space game. And it's in the Star Trek universe which is a special bonus for people that like that place.

no ones ever "looking for tank" or "looking for healer".

Pffft... I coulda just said.... That  ^^

Decided to give the new Unreal Tournament a spin this weekend. I found it quite fun once I got used to the new movement mechanics, despite the lack of double jump.

I continue poking around in ESO with some people. Morrowind is a nice nostalgia trip. Some of it is very pretty. There's lots of people role playing and a lot of room for being casual, which is fine with me.

I'm still looking forward to Camelot Unchained and interested in some of the CoH projects in the works.

Every time I start playing a single player game I get bored. I think I'm addicted to garbage chat spam.

well, i played WoW for a few years up until the recent upgrade.  the nerf to paladins was too much.  couldn't play any longer.  just started FF14  not sure how I like it.  all the characters are so feminine. :/

I tried to play Overwatch this weekend, but ...

As I mentioned in the Star Trek Online topic, I had to stop playing STO because something in the cutscenes made my TV screen just shut itself off.  I had to go over to the TV, turn it off and on again, and then leave it in standby mode for a while before I could turn it back on again.

And this weekend, Overwatch started doing the same thing.  Something about the title screen did it (specifically, when it would momentarily flip back to the title screen when trying to find a match).

I can play any other game (or just watch TV) for hours with no trouble, but those games won't let me play (and only specific things trigger it, but they're specific things that I can't avoid doing).

It almost sounds like your TV thinks it's getting a signal it can't handle due to a resolution change and so it safetyshutsoff or just (technically speaking) blergs out. Whatever the problem is, that sucks!

Since you had the STO prob, STO has made at least a few video tweaks. It would be worth seeing if the problem still exists or not. Since you're having it in more than one game, probly it does..., but, they have made changes that would make it worth trying again.

My TV.. has this thing that it always shuts off an hour after I have it turn itself on along with the PC in the morning. I have to manually set a timer on the TV, it's not smart enough to know the PC came on like my last TV.. This usually happens at the absolute worst time, of course. I have no idea in the world what makes it do that. I've been through every single possible setting for this thing, including the Power Save stuff. Highly annoying but at least I can just turn mine back on again.

Hope you get it figured out! Gotta have video..

I reset some things on my television (for example, I put it in "Game Mode" instead of "Film Mode", which darkened the screen but increased the contrast), and it seems to be working better.  While it was in Film Mode, a particularly intense explosion on Killing Floor 2 caused the screen to shut off, but it hasn't happened since.

Oh, and also... playing Killing Floor 2 (one of June's PS Plus games), mostly solo.  Got a Level 20 Demolitionist.  Edit: and a Level 15 Field Medic.  And a Level 10 Firebug.  And a Level 7 Gunslinger and Support.  And a Level 5 Commando and Survivalist.

I just like blowing things up, I think.

Finally fired up Baldurs Gate: Enhanced Edition for a bit of a refreshing change.   I'm still fairly early in it, but I'm enjoying playing with my custom party like the old days.    There are some nice tweaks like being able to legitimately create a party (never cared for the npcs) rather than use the multiplayer workaround,  as well as having so many of the class kits to further customize them. Other quality of life changes include support for higher resolution character portraits that scale,  so you don't need 3 versions,  as well as being able to write notes into the journal.

I typically roll with 2 mages, but in a bit of nostalgia for my old characters across so many games, I opted for a party dominated mostly by fighters:  barbarian, paladin, kensai, ranger, invoker mage (because, fireball!), thief/cleric (utility toon ; ' )

Reviews of the Siege on Dragonspeare ecpansion that Beamdog created haven't been so good,  so i will likely go straight over to bgii.

Does anyone know of any mmos that offer a similar amount of skills to use, whether they be toggles or attack powers like in CoH?

I've been playing mostly Minecraft and Starbound currently.  I play between a public modded FTB server and a friend's private whitelist-only vanilla minecraft server.  Starbound I just got back into a few months ago after I was sure they were done tinkering for a while after the last wipe and update of doom, so many beautiful worlds terraformed by hand into villages and megafarms lost... again.

Playing starbound sometimes is a little hard on players, because occasionally there's an engine update that makes the old game files incompatible, so suddenly your entire universe and character and all the quests are gone and you have to start over from day one when you update.  It's a good game though and worth the hassle, at least to me and everyone else playing it too it seems.

I poke at other games as the mood takes me, but keep going back to minecraft a lot lately.

I'm playing through class stories in SWTOR, popping in to a couple of games from time to time just to check on things, MHO, and Alpha Centauri.
