MMORPG Character Comparisons
« on: August 06, 2013, 01:43:30 AM »
First, some background.

In July, 2012, I began the framework for my next big project at Paragon Wiki: specifically, to document and standardize listings and pictures of all the costume pieces available in City of Heroes. This framework consisted of a multi-page spreadsheet detailing all the possible combinations of body parts, costume pieces, patterns, styles, gender exclusions, duplications, omissions, and errors found in the costume creator. I even had plans to share the list of things I found that needed fixed with the staff at Paragon Studios, at the very least so they could be aware of them.

Then September 1st came, and my focus shifted slightly. Now that we were going to lose City of Heroes, I wanted to be able to see how it compared to other MMORPGs, and attempt to measure the true loss of customization that the gaming community was soon to experience.

I first scrambled to complete the work I began on my spreadsheet, eventually learning new names of exponentially large numbers. I then started going through the other half-dozen games I had installed on my computer. Finally, over the next eight months, or so, I downloaded and installed many dozens of gigabytes worth of other games, creating characters, and doing maths. By the time I finished going through thirty different MMOs, both ancient and modern, one thing was very clear to me: When it came to total character customization options, we had it pretty darn good in CoH.

So, what follows here are summaries of various MMOs strictly as they pertain to character creation. All games listed are either free-to-play or have demos or trial periods. Invariably, I'm sure to have missed one that would seem obvious to someone else, but I feel this is a thorough enough cross-section to make some good comparisions across the history of the genre. As time permits, I'll try to update as new games are released.

Some general notes:
  • The totals listed "At Character Creation" are the minimum of what would be available to anyone who picks up the game.
  • The "Fully Unlocked" totals are largely unknown because they are locked behind subscriptions or market purchases that I didn't do, but some were able to be calculated regardless, and are shown as such.
  • Totals for games like Guild Wars and Age of Conan only reflect the base module and not any purchased expansions.
  • Skill totals for other games like EVE Online and Star Trek Online are difficult to calculate because there are multiple levels of training for each skill. In these cases, only the total number of skills are listed.
  • All research was completed as of May, 2013. Consequently, these charts may not reflect changes that have been made to some games since then (like SWTOR and STO).

Actually there are a lot more colors for costumes in GW2 than listed there.  Actually you start from a very limited pallet of rather mute tones, only 21.  No pure colors, no white or black.  All together there are currently 415 colors but you must buy them in game or get them in an RNG drop, it's unidentified until you check.   The purer and brighter the color, the more expensive it tends to be.  Prices range from a few silvers to tens even over one hundred gold for high demand colors like black and white (silver is 100 copper, gold is 100 silver).  And that's on each character.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Dyes#By_Set

It's like trying to shop in a paint store by name only.  What color is "freshen" or "mintay" and how different are they and how is the material it's being applied on alters it's appearance?  It's a nightmare if you can't discern slight differences in shade.

And let's not even talk about outfits.  Also an item can have up to four colors, many only have two or three, really exotic and expensive items can have four.  And a few only have one.  Picking a look is a PITA since it follows the traditional stats tied to an item but there is a way to "skin" the look of one piece over the stats of another.  However to do so with max level armors requires an item available only from the cash shop for each piece.  There isn't really a "closet" other than your own account wide bank to store looks, which are not cheap at high level.  Want to keep the look but change the stats, spend more real money to move the skin.  Standard six body areas, boots, legs, top, gloves, shoulders, head.  Even modifying hair color, requires an item from the damn cash shop.

If you were an ICON junky in CoH, GW2 isn't your game.  But few MMOs are about making a truly unique identity outside of your face and hair.  It's an entire aspect of content they seem happy to ignore or monetize.

You have understated the actual character customization options within Rift, DDO and EQ2.

Rift has 6 races, 4 callings, each calling has 9 souls (8 free one paid for) of which you can pick any 3, resulting in a ridiculous amount of customisation. They also have a decent cosmetics system in place that allows you to mix and match (quite a few cosmetics are available via game play only a few are cash store only) it's also easy to not realise how deep the character creation system is if you just select one of the predetermined paths

DDO has a crazy amount of character customisation, you can multiclass and there is a large variety of skills/spells to choose from.

EQ2 has a choice of 20 races (of which 1 is purchaseable) and 25 classes (of which one is purchaseable) they were originally more restricted in the f2p model but opened all of them except for Freeblood and Beastmaster up earlier this year.

The tables on that page remind me of what I went through when I sorted the CoH power icons by color. *Ugh* I was aware that additional dyes were unlockable or purchasable in many games, but that went beyond the scope of what I was looking at at the time, primarily being original character creation options. Having that information presented here is good and appreciated, though.

EQ2 has a choice of 20 races (of which 1 is purchaseable) and 25 classes (of which one is purchaseable) they were originally more restricted in the f2p model but opened all of them except for Freeblood and Beastmaster up earlier this year.

Like I mentioned previously, the information I gathered was a snapshot at a particular time, so further changes won't necessarily be reflected here. In fact, EQ2 was one of the first other games I downloaded, by late September or October of last year -- well before these changes went into effect.

Likewise, when I peeked in at SWTOR recently, it appears that the update which added the "cat person" race changed things around a bit. My impression is that the total options available went up, but the free-to-play options might have been reduced.

STO also has a lot more skill/ability customization than is included in the chart. I figured that the trait combinations for the Federation races alone would have 222,860 different combinations. (This doesn't include totals for Klingons or Romulans.) I ultimately decided not to include traits because I wanted to focus on active skill choices rather than simply passive, well, traits.

It does appear that I forgot to include race in the combinations for Rift, though, so I've updated the starting options to reflect that. The end-game Planar Attunement options would be part of the "At End of Career" totals, if you could accurately calculate them.

Regardless, having further details shared by people who have played these games will always be welcome to give future readers a better picture of the current state of customization options.

The tables on that page remind me of what I went through when I sorted the CoH power icons by color. *Ugh*
Off on a wee-hours-of-the-morning tangent, at least now I know where to look if I ever decide to get a full set of knuckle tattoos.   :D

I'd just like to throw out that EA's Supreme Heroes, and Android game I've been playing, has a surprisingly high amount of customization. It's free, and the actual "gameplay" is pretty average, but I have not seen two heroes that look alike (except for people that keep the default appearance) - and I've seen quite a few heroes at this point. The "missions" you do are also pretty entertaining, story wise, and there's a lot of good artwork for the comic book cover style mission blocks, and the missions themselves. It's more of a time-waster than anything, but like I said, the customization is actually pretty good, so that might be worth something.

And while this isn't a game, per se, it is sort of a poor man's Icon: http://www.heromachine.com/ Plus it's browser based, so that's cool. I say "poor man's" because it isn't 3d, but some of the examples of hero creations you can see are pretty cool.

I used CIT before they even joined the Titan network! But then I left for a long ol' time, and came back. Now I edit the wiki.

I'm working on sorting the Lore AMAs so that questions are easily found and linked: http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Lore_AMA/Sorted Tell me what you think!

Fabrica De Herois is another browser app in the same vein: http://fabricadeherois.blogspot.com.br/ Check out this version for a Bruce Timm inspired art style: http://www.fabricadeherois.com/fabricadeherois/blog2013/fhanimated/fhanimated.html
We were heroes. We were villains. At the end of the world we all fought as one. It's what we did that defines us.
The end occurred pretty much as we predicted: all servers redlining until midnight... and then no servers to go around.

Somewhere beyond time and space, if you look hard you might find a flash of silver trailing crimson: a lone lost Spartan on his way home.

Well, my initial project goal was simply to sub-categorize the individual icons by power set so you wouldn't have to sort through hundreds per page to find the one you wanted. Then it occured to me that it could still be helpful to be able to find them visually, so thus was born the sorted and linked color chart. Yeah, I'm crazy like that.

My mother is a librarian.

She would hate you, a little bit.  :P
I wouldn't use the word "replace," but there's no word for "take over for you and make everything better almost immediately," so we just say "replace."

Just an itty bitty correction, but you've got Neverwinter labled as having an 'optional subscription option'.  It doesn't.  No subscription option at all, just the cash shop items and the bigger bundles on their website.  Kind of weird, considering STO and CO both have optional subs, but hey, if it works it works.

And man is it depressing that DCUO has less character customization than not only STO, but freaking EVE, geez.  Fun game, but Sony really dropped the ball on the character customization big-time.

Though I wonder how much of that was DC's fault (I know the 3 colors thing was DC's choice).

Not surprised that CO is top of this list, both with and without asymmetry, since it's just got an absurd amount of things in a million different character outfit slots and they keep adding more.

Thanks for the correction. I think I had based my info on initial presumption before NW was released, and not what it ended up with.

All charts have been updated with info from WildStar's open beta. Some data could change based on what gets released live, but that's what there is for now.

Not that i want to make more work for you, but Final Fantasy XIV has quite a bit of customization for the character as well as a reskinning and dye system for gear. Also you can access every class/job/skill on a single character.

Elder Scrolls Online also permits a fair bit of customization, although for outfits a lot of it requires player crafting and the starting gear is a little bland.
So far so good. Onward and upward!

All charts have been updated with info from Elder Scrolls Online and Dragon's Prophet, as well as release info for WildStar.

I must say that Elder Scrolls is very pretty with the graphics turned up. It's still gear-based, though, so I don't know what the likelihood is of me sticking around much after the first month.
